Abstract:Elucidating the structure-property relationships of ultra-small metal nanocluster with basic nuclear is of great significance for understanding the evolution mechanism in both the structures and properties of polynuclear metal nanoclusters. In this study, an ultra-small copper hydride (CuH for short) nanocluster was simply synthesized with high yield, and the large-scale preparation was also achieved. Single crystal X-ray diffractometer (SC-XRD) analysis shows that this copper NC contains a tetrahedral Cu4 core co-capped by four PPh2Py ligands and two Cl in which the existence of the central H atom in tetrahedron was further identified experimentally and theoretically. This CuH nanocluster exhibits bright yellow emission, which is proved to be the mixture of phosphorescence and fluorescence by the sensitivity of both emission intensity and lifetime to O2. Furthermore, the temperature-dependent emission spectra and density functional theory (DFT) calculations suggest that the luminescence of CuH mainly originates from the metal-to-ligand charge transfer and cluster-centered triplet excited states. This work offers new insights into understanding the structure-property relationship of basic nuclear CuH nanocluster.

Abstract:Metal nanoclusters have emerged as promising near-infrared (NIR)–emissive materials, but their room-temperature photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY), especially in solution, is often low (<10%). We studied the photophysics of Au 22 ( t BuPhC≡C) 18 (Au 22 ) and its alloy counterpart Au 16 Cu 6 ( t BuPhC≡C) 18 (Au 16 Cu 6 ) (where t Bu is tert -butyl and Ph is phenyl) and found that copper (Cu) doping suppressed the nonradiative decay (~60-fold less) and promoted intersystem crossing rate (~300-fold higher). The Au 16 Cu 6 nanocluster exhibited >99% PLQY in deaerated solution at room temperature with an emission maximum at 720 nanometers tailing to 950 nanometers and 61% PLQY in the oxygen-saturated solution. The approach to achieve near-unity PLQY could enable the development of highly emissive metal cluster materials.

Abstract:Emission enhancement of gold nanoclusters protected by 6-propyl-2-thiouracil (PRT-AuNCs) is achieved through doping proper amount of Cu2+. Sophisticated mechanisms are involved in the modulation of emission properties of the PRT-AuNCs / Cu2+ system, instead of merely a metal ion induced aggregation. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, IR spectroscopy and mass spectroscopy reveal that the Cu2+ is reduced by 6-propyl-2-thiouracil to form Cu(I)-thiolate complex, which then co-assembles with the AuNCs to form a PRT-Au/Cu composite at a proper Cu2+ concentration. Systematic microscopic characterizations including scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction etc. demonstrate the crucial effect of compact aggregation driven by metallophilic interactions on the emission enhancement of PRT-Au/Cu. Detailed analysis on the photophysical parameters validates that the presence of Cu(I) changes the radiative transition mechanisms of PRT-Au/Cu with respect to primitive PRT-AuNCs. As a result, a cooperative effect of heterometal atom and aggregation induced emission (AIE) leads to a strongly emissive composite with bathochromic-shifted emission energy. Moreover, the high molar ratio between Cu and Au in PRT-Au/Cu can effectively reduce the cost of the material in production, and we have developed a WLED to exemplify the potential application of this composite material.

Abstract:Abstract Metal nanoclusters (NCs) have been developed as a new class of luminescent nanomaterials with potential applications in various fields. However, for most of the metal NCs reported so far, the relatively low photoluminescence quantum yield (QY) in aqueous solution hinders their applications. Here, we describe the utilization of bis-Schiff base linkages to restrict intramolecular motion of surface motifs at the single-cluster level. Based on Au 22 (SG) 18 (SG: glutathione) NCs, an intracluster cross-linking system was constructed with 2,6-pyridinedicarboxaldehyde (PDA), and water-soluble gold NCs with luminescence QY up to 48% were obtained. The proposed approach for achieving high emission efficiency can be extended to other luminescent gold NCs with core-shell structure. Our results also show that the content of surface-bound Au(I)-SG complexes has a significant impact on the PDA-induced luminescence enhancement, and a high ratio of Au(I)-SG will be beneficial to increasing the photoluminescence intensity of gold NCs.

Abstract:Ligand-induced surface restructuring with heteroatomic doping is used to precisely modify the surface of a prototypical [Au-25(SR1)(18)](-) cluster (1) while maintaining its icosahedral Au-13 core for the synthesis of a new bimetallic [Au19Cd3(SR2)(18)](-) cluster (2). Single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies reveal that six bidentate Au-2(SR1)(3) motifs (L2) attached to the Au-13 core of 1 were replaced by three quadridentate Au2Cd(SR2)(6) motifs (L4) to create a bimetallic cluster 2. Experimental and theoretical results demonstrate a stronger electronic interaction between the surface motifs (Au2Cd(SR2)(6)) and the Au-13 core, attributed to a more compact cluster structure and a larger energy gap of 2 compared to that of 1. These factors dramatically enhance the photoluminescence quantum efficiency and lifetime of crystal of the cluster 2. This work provides a new route for the design of a wide range of bimetallic/alloy metal nanoclusters with superior optoelectronic properties and functionality.

Abstract:The synthesis, structural characteristics, and photophysical properties of luminescent Cu-rich bimetallic superatomic clusters [12(S2CNnPr2)6(C≡CPh)4]+ (1a+), [12{S2P(OR)2}6(C≡CPh)4]+ (2+), (2a+ = iPr; 2b+ = nPr), [12{S2P(C2H4Ph)2}6(C≡CPh)4]+ (2c+), and [12{S2P(OnPr)2}6(C≡CPh)4]+ (3+) were studied. Compositionally uniform clusters 1+–3+ were isolated from the reaction of dithiolato-stabilized, polyhydrido copper clusters with phenylacetylene in the presence of heterometal salts. By using X-ray diffraction, the structures of 1a+, 2a+, 2b+, and 3+ were able to be determined. ESI–mass spectrometry and elemental analysis confirmed their compositions and purity. The structural characteristics of these clusters are similar with respect to displaying gold (or silver)-centered Cu12 cuboctahedra surrounded by six dithiocarbamate/dithiophosph(in)ate and four alkynyl ligands. The doping of Au and Ag atoms into the polyhydrido copper nanoclusters significantly enhances their PL quantum yields from 12 (0.58%) to 12 (55%) at ambient temperature in solution. Abstract:The photoluminescence (PL) of metal nanoclusters (NCs), originating from their molecule-like electronic structure, is one of the most intriguing properties of NCs. Although various strategies such as tailoring the size, structure, and chemical environment of NCs have shown to improve the PL, their quantum yields (QYs) are still lagging far behind those of conventional luminescent materials, including quantum dots and organic fluorophores. Herein, we report the synthesis of highly luminescent gold cluster assembly (GCA) from Zn2+-ion-mediated assembly of Au4(SRCOO-)4 clusters using mercaptocarboxylic acid as a protective ligand and reductant as well as a growth suppressor. The synergetic combination of unique aurophilic interactions among Au4 clusters and the rigidified chemical environment induced by metal ion chelation through carboxylate groups is responsible for the ultrabright greenish-blue fluorescence with a QY up to 90%. Furthermore, the unique flexibility of dis/reassembly and the aggregation-dependent strong fluorescence of GCA offer a great potential for applications in biodegradable and trackable drug delivery systems.
Multicolor photoluminescence of Cu14 clusters modulated using surface ligands

Abstract:Copper nanoclusters exhibit unique structural features and their molecular assembly results in diverse photoluminescence properties. In this study, we present ligand-dependent multicolor luminescence observed in a Cu14 cluster, primarily protected by ortho-carborane-9,12-dithiol (o-CBDT), featuring an octahedral Cu6 inner kernel enveloped by eight isolated copper atoms. The outer layer of the metal kernel consists of six bidentate o-CBDT ligands, in which carborane backbones are connected through μ3-sulphide linkages. The initially prepared Cu14 cluster, solely protected by six o-CBDT ligands, did not crystallize in its native form. However, in the presence of N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF), the cluster crystallized along with six DMF molecules. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) revealed that the DMF molecules were directly coordinated to six of the eight capping Cu atoms, while oxygen atoms were bound to the two remaining Cu apices in antipodal positions. Efficient tailoring of the cluster surface with DMF shifted its luminescence from yellow to bright red. Luminescence decay profiles showed fluorescence emission for these clusters, originating from the singlet states. Additionally, we synthesized microcrystalline fibers with a one-dimensional assembly of DMF-appended Cu14 clusters and bidentate DPPE linkers. These fibers exhibited bright greenish-yellow phosphorescence emission, originating from the triplet state, indicating the drastic surface tailoring effect of secondary ligands. Theoretical calculations provided insights into the electronic energy levels and associated electronic transitions for these clusters. This work demonstrated dynamic tuning of the emissive excited states of copper nanoclusters through the efficient engineering of ligands.
Bright NIR‐II Photoluminescence in Rod‐Shaped Icosahedral Gold Nanoclusters

Abstract:Fluorophores with high quantum yields, extended maximum emission wavelengths, and long photoluminescence (PL) lifetimes are still lacking for sensing and imaging applications in the second near‐infrared window (NIR‐II). In this work, a series of rod‐shaped icosahedral nanoclusters with bright NIR‐II PL, quantum yields up to ≈8%, and a peak emission wavelength of 1520 nm are reported. It is found that the bright NIR‐II emission arises from a previously ignored state with near‐zero oscillator strength in the ground‐state geometry and the central Au atom in the nanoclusters suppresses the non‐radiative transitions and enhances the overall PL efficiency. In addition, a framework is developed to analyze and relate the underlying transitions for the absorptions and the NIR‐II emissions in the Au nanoclusters based on the experimentally defined absorption coefficient. Overall, this work not only shows good performance of the rod‐shaped icosahedral series of Au nanoclusters as NIR‐II fluorophores, but also unravels the fundamental electronic transitions and atomic‐level structure‐property relations for the enhancement of the NIR‐II PL in gold nanoclusters. The framework developed here also provides a simple method to analyze the underlying electronic transitions in metal nanoclusters.

Enhanced Fluorescence with Tunable Color in Doped Diphosphine-Protected Gold Nanoclusters

Abstract:Rational control of the luminescent properties of ligand-protected coinage metal clusters has long been pursued but remains challenging. Here we explore the crucial structural and electronic factors governing the fluorescence of a diphosphine-protected [Au13(dppe)5Cl2]3+ cluster by time-dependent density functional theory calculations. By substituting the central Au atom with group 5 to group 11 transition metal atoms, the emission wavelength is adjustable from red to blue, accompanied by enhanced fluorescence intensity compared with the undoped cluster. The evolution of light-emitting behavior upon doping and the corresponding roles of the dopant, Au cage, ligands, and their interplay are interpreted at the electronic structure level. In particular, strong dopant-Au cage interaction associated with large electron-hole overlap on the dopant are is a key factor to endow large emission energy and intensity. These theoretical results provide vital guidance for designing atomically precise nanoclusters with visible fluorescence and high quantum yield for practical uses.

Abstract:Luminescence is one of the most important properties for metal nanoclusters; however, clearly revealing its origin remains challenging. The different luminescence properties of the two prototypical 8e nanoclusters Au 11 and Au 13 remain elusive—Au 11 is always nonluminescent, whereas Au 13 is luminescent. In this work, by using a designed unique aromatic ligand (quinoline-2-thiol), we obtained new atomically precise phosphine-thiolate-protected neutral Au 11 - SH and cationic Au 13 - SH . In comparison with the classic phosphine-halide-protected Au 11 - Cl and Au 13 - Cl , the Cl-to-thiol alteration triggered room-temperature luminescence of the Au 11 core and dramatically modulated that of the Au 13 core. Ultrafast ultraviolet/infrared (UV/IR) spectroscopy, which is sensitive to organic aromatic groups, together with ultrafast transient absorption (TA) spectroscopy unprecedently revealed a relaxation process from the ligand to core state affecting the dynamics in excited states and some critical intermediate states favouring efficient room-temperature emission of these nanoclusters. This work provides some new insights into the origin of photoluminescence of metal nanoclusters and opens an avenue to modulate the dynamics of their excited states using aromatic ligands, which would have direct applications in lighting, light harvesting, and photocatalysis.

Abstract:Novel fluorescent nanomaterials have attracted enormous interests in the applications of illumination and display besides the traditional organic fluorophors. As potential alternatives, the environmental friendly fluorescent ultra-small organic-inorganic hybrid metal nanoclusters (size < 2 nm) is a series of powerful competitors used in illuminating field, on account of the non-poisonous, large amount of storage in earth, simple synthetic route, and relative low cost. The most important one, facile regulation of the fluorescence intensity and emission colors makes metal nanoclusters more attractive candidates for illumination application. Here, through ingeniously designing the structures of capping ligands, the highly bright copper nanoclusters are obtained, which further assemble into 2D ribbons with fluorescence quantum efficiency ascending to 36.4%. Last, the light emitting diodes with excellent performance are constructed, the emission wavelength locates at 650 nm in red region, which is suitable for plant illumination.

Abstract:Intrinsic dual-emission (DE) of gold nanoclusters in the near-infrared (NIR) are fascinating for fundamental importance and practical applications, but their synthesis remains a formidable challenge and sophisticated excited-state processes make elucidating DE mechanisms much more arduous. Here, we report an all-alkynyl–protected gold nanocluster, Au20 , showing a prolate Au 12 tri-octahedral kernel surrounded by two Au 2 (CZ-PrA) 3 dimers, four Au(CZ-PrA) 2 monomers, and two CZ-PrA − bridges. Au20 exhibits distinguished photophysical properties including NIR DE at 820 and 940 nm, microsecond radiative relaxation, and 6.26% photoluminescent quantum yield at ambient environment in nondegassed solution. Combining systematic studies on steady/transient spectroscopy and theoretical calculation, we identified two triplet charge transfer (CT) states, ligand-to-kernel and kernel-based CT states as DE origins. Furthermore, this NIR DE exhibits highly independent and sensitive response to surrounding environments, which well coincide with its mechanism. This work not only provides a substantial structure model to understand a distinctive DE mechanism but also motivates the further development of NIR DE materials.

Abstract:An unprecedented trigonal prismatic (μ(6)-C)Au(6) structure has been found in a novel gold(I)-copper(I) cluster with a hypercoordinated carbon, [CAu(6)Cu(2)(dppy)(6)](BF(4))(4); the incorporation of copper ions enhances the rigidity and integrity of the cluster and turns on the bright red solution luminescence.
Scissor-like Au4Cu2 Cluster with Phosphorescent Mechanochromism and Thermochromism

Abstract:Reaction of [Au(tht)2](ClO4) (tht = tetrahydrothiophene), [Cu(CH3CN)4](ClO4), 3,6-di-tert-butyl-1,8-diethynyl-9H-carbazole (H3decz), and bis(2-diphenylphosphinophenyl)ether (POP) in the presence of triethylamine (NEt3) gave the cluster complex Au4Cu2(decz)2(POP)2 as yellow crystals. As revealed by X-ray crystallography, the Au4Cu2 cluster exhibits scissor-like structure sustained by two decz and two POP ligands and stabilized by Au-Cu and Au-Au interactions. The Au4Cu2 cluster shows bright yellow to orange photoluminescence upon irradiation at >300 nm, arising from 3[π (decz)→5d (Au)] 3LMCT (ligand-to-metal charge transfer) and 3[π→π* (decz)] 3IL (intraligand) triplet states as revealed by theoretical and computational studies. When it is mechanically ground, reversible phosphorescence conversion from yellow to red is observed owing to more compact molecular packing and thus stronger intermetallic interaction. Variable-temperature luminescence studies reveal that it displays distinct red-shifts of the emission whether the temperature is elevated or lowered from ambient temperature, suggestive of exceptional thermochromic phosphorescence characteristics.
