Abstract:Recent progress in the study of the single-scattering properties of nonspherical ice crystals within cirrus clouds and nonspherical dust particles is reviewed. We have been using the finite-difference time domain (FDTD) method, the discrete dipole approximation (DDA), and an improved geometric optics method (IGOM) to compute the single-scattering properties of nonspherical particles. We have incorporated the so-called edge effect associated with the surface wave into the IGOM extinction and absorption efficiencies. The simulation results in the solar and thermal infrared spectral regimes are presented. Furthermore, the impacts of particle nonsphericity on downstream remote sensing implementations and radiative transfer simulations involving ice clouds and dust aerosols are also summarized.

Abstract:The influence of adiabatic focusing on particle diffusion is an important topic in astrophysics and plasma physics. In the past, several authors have explored the influence of along-field adiabatic focusing on the parallel diffusion of charged energetic particles. In this paper, using the unified nonlinear transport theory developed by Shalchi and the method of He and Schlickeiser, we derive a new nonlinear perpendicular diffusion coefficient for a non-uniform background magnetic field. This formula demonstrates that the particle perpendicular diffusion coefficient is modified by along-field adiabatic focusing. For isotropic pitch-angle scattering and the weak adiabatic focusing limit, the derived perpendicular diffusion coefficient is independent of the sign of adiabatic focusing characteristic length. For the two-component model, we simplify the perpendicular diffusion coefficient up to the second order of the power series of the adiabatic focusing characteristic quantity. We find that the first-order modifying factor is equal to zero and that the sign of the second order is determined by the energy of the particles.

Abstract:Solar energetic particles (SEPs) are considered a serious radiation threat to space technologies and humans in space. SEPs are accelerated to high energies by solar explosive phenomena such as solar flares and in particular by shocks driven by coronal mass ejections (CMEs). We aim to better understand the effects of magnetic field gradient-induced adiabatic focusing on the coronal acceleration of SEPs and to test whether free-escape boundaries produce the same effects as focusing. We present results from a one-dimensional oblique shock model with a mean free path similar to Bell's (1978) theory using Monte Carlo simulations. We show that the momentum spectrum at a shock and far upstream will attain a steady state in a model with adiabatic focusing, whereas it does not in a non-focusing model. However, the effects of focusing can be mimicked in a non-focused simulation by introducing a free-escape boundary ahead of the shock close to the position where the particles will escape from the shock by focusing in a focused transport simulation. This provides a promising avenue for constructing computationally efficient codes that can model the particle emission from shocks.

Abstract:Context: Remote light scattering and thermal infrared observations provide clues about the physical properties of cometary and interplanetary dust particles. Identifying these properties will lead to a better understanding of the formation and evolution of the Solar System. Aims: We present a numerical solution for the radiative and conductive heat transport in a random particulate medium enclosed by an arbitrarily shaped surface. The method will be applied to study thermal properties of cometary dust particles. Methods: The recently introduced incoherent Monte Carlo radiative transfer method developed for scattering, absorption, and propagation of electromagnetic waves in dense discrete random media is extended for radiative heat transfer and thermal emission. The solution is coupled with the conductive Fourier transport equation that is solved with the finite-element method. Results: The proposed method allows the synoptic analysis of light scattering and thermal emission by large cometary dust particles consisting of submicrometer-sized grains. In particular, we show that these particles can sustain significant temperature gradients resulting in the superheating factor phase function observed for the coma of comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko.

Abstract:An approximate analytic description of a diffusion coefficient, including the effect of adiabatic focusing, has been developed. This description is formulated with the aid of stochastic differential equations and the steady perturbation solution of the Fokker-Plank transport equation. The analytical formula is based on three important assumptions. First, the pitch-angle diffusion coefficient is set to be separable from the spatial coordinate and the pitch-angle cosine. Second, the spatial dependence of the ratio between the mean-free path and focusing length is assumed to be weak. Third, the pitch-angle distribution relaxes quickly to a steady state. The new analytic formula could be applied to calculate the spatial diffusion coefficient in the interplanetary and interstellar space.

Abstract:This study explores the impact of a turbulent scattering mechanism, akin to those influencing solar and galactic cosmic rays propagating in the interplanetary medium, on the population of suprathermal electrons in the solar wind. We employ a Fokker–Planck equation to model the radial evolution of electron pitch angle distributions under the action of magnetic focusing, which moves the electrons away from isotropy, and of a diffusion process that tends to bring them back to it. We compare the steady-state solutions of this Fokker–Planck equation with data obtained from the Solar Orbiter and Parker Solar Probe missions and find a remarkable agreement, varying the turbulent mean free path as the sole free parameter in our model. The obtained mean free paths are of the order of the astronomical unit, and display weak dependence on electron energy within the 100 eV–1 keV range. This value is notably lower than Coulomb collision estimates but aligns well with observed mean free paths of low-rigidity solar energetic particle events. The strong agreement between our model and observations leads us to conclude that the hypothesis of turbulent scattering at work on electrons at all heliospheric distances is justified. We discuss several implications, notably the existence of a low Knudsen number region at large distances from the Sun, which offers a natural explanation for the presence of an isotropic "halo" component at all distances from the Sun—electrons being isotropized in this distant region before traveling back into the inner part of the interplanetary medium.

Giant In-Particle Field Concentration and Fano Resonances at Light Scattering by High-Refractive Index Particles

Abstract:A detailed analytical inspection of light scattering by a particle with high refractive index m+i\kappa and small dissipative constant \kappa is presented. We have shown that there is a dramatic difference in the behavior of the electromagnetic field within the particle (inner problem) and the scattered field outside it (outer problem). With an increase in m at fix values of the other parameters, the field within the particle asymptotically converges to a periodic function of m. The electric and magnetic type Mie resonances of different orders overlap substantially. It may lead to a giant concentration of the electromagnetic energy within the particle. At the same time, we demonstrate that identical transformations of the solution for the outer problem allow to present each partial scattered wave as a sum of two partitions. One of them corresponds to the m-independent wave, scattered by a perfectly reflecting particle and plays the role of a background, while the other is associated with the excitation of a sharply-m-dependent resonant Mie mode. The interference of the partitions brings about a typical asymmetric Fano profile. The explicit expressions for the parameters of the Fano profile have been obtained "from the first principles" without any additional assumptions and/or fitting. In contrast to the inner problem, at an increase in m the resonant modes of the outer problem die out, and the scattered field converges to the universal, m-independent profile of the perfectly reflecting sphere. Numerical estimates of the discussed effects for a gallium phosphide particle are presented.

Effect of Adiabatic Cooling on the Fitted Parallel Mean Free Path of Solar Energetic Particles

Abstract:The focused transport equation without adiabatic energy loss is widely used to model solar energetic particles' (SEP) interplanetary propagation by fitting spacecraft data. We incorporate the adiabatic energy loss effect, provided by the divergence of the solar wind flows, into the focused transport equation. The equation is then solved numerically using a time‐backward stochastic integration method. We show the comparison between solutions of focused transport equations with and without energy loss. We found the effect of adiabatic cooling is significant on the time profile of the intensity of SEPs. It is also shown that without energy loss, for gradual events, we can only fit the initial phase of SEP events. However, with energy loss, we can fit the entire (initial and decaying) phases. In addition, the values of the mean free path obtained by fitting the SEP events with energy loss is always smaller than that without. The results suggest that including adiabatic cooling effect is another way to partially fix the solar energetic particle mean free paths' “too small” problem discussed by Bieber et al. (1994), i.e., the mean free paths obtained by fitting transport equation to observation data are much larger than the quasi‐linear theory results.

Abstract:An analytic solution for a Fokker-Planck equation that describes propagation of energetic particles through a scattering medium is obtained. The solution is found in terms of an infinite series of mixed moments of particle distribution. The spatial dispersion of a particle cloud released at t=0 evolves through three phases, ballistic (t<Tc), transdiffusive (t~Tc) and diffusive (t>>Tc), where Tc is the collision <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://time.The" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> ballistic phase is characterized by a decelerating expansion of the initial point source in form of a "box" distribution with thickening walls. The next, transdiffusive phase is marked by the box walls thickened to its size and a noticeable slow down of expansion. Finally, the evolution enters the conventional diffusion phase.

Abstract:Scattering properties of irregularly shaped interstellar composite dust analogues consisting of graphite and fayalite (Fe2SiO4) were studied using discrete dipole approximation (DDA). Two dust models were developed to calculate the scattering and extinction efficiencies, single scattering albedo, asymmetry parameter, phase functions and degree of linear polarizations. Laboratory measurements were also performed at three incident wavelengths 543.5, 594.5 and 632.8 nm on chemically synthesized graphite and fayalite composite particles of sizes ranging from 0.3 to 5 μm. A comparative analysis of the theoretical and experimental results of shape- and size-averaged scattering parameters shows that changes in the percentage composition of a two-species mixture model has a pronounced effect on the light-scattering properties of dust particles. The developed computational models are successful in representing a two-species mixture of interstellar dust analogues considering diverse size, shapes and percentage composition. This technique can be applied to fit observed scattering and absorption peaks in the visible region produced by astrophysical dust, provided large number of particle species are included and the influence of more physical parameters (e.g., porosity, fluffiness, temperature, density, etc.) are considered. Further, this study is also applicable to remote sensing, atmospheric and planetary sciences. All the physical parameters employed as variables in the models influence the oscillations observed in theoretical curves and change the values of scattering parameters.

Abstract:In this manuscript we study multiple scattering and diffusion of scalar wave in a group of monodisperse spheroidal particles with random orientations. We begin by fixing a spheroid in a prolate spheroidal coordinate system, and attain the expansion of the scalar Green's function in this space. The expansion is firstly based on spheroidal wave functions, and then we transform it into the expansion of spherical wave functions. Next, we average the Green's function over the orientations of the spheroid to get the averaged transition operator. Finally, we calculate the transport mean free path and anisotropy factor for the spheroidal particles group, based on the irreducible vertex in the Bethe-Salpeter equation. The approaches to get the average transition operator and the mean free paths in this manuscript will be of benefit to the research area of multiple scattering by non-spherical particles.

Adiabatic and post-adiabatic hyperspherical treatment of the huge ungerade proton-hydrogen scattering length

Abstract:While the hydrogen molecular ion is the simplest molecule in nature and very well studied in all of its properties, it remains an interesting system to use for explorations of fundamental questions. One such question treated in this study relates to finding an optimal adiabatic representation of the physics, i.e. the best adiabatic description that minimizes the role of nonadiabatic effects. As a test case explored here in detail, we consider the ungerade symmetry of H$_2^+$, which is known to have a huge scattering length of order 750 bohr radii, and an incredibly weakly bound excited state. We show that a hyperspherical adiabatic description does an excellent job of capturing the main physics. Our calculation yields a competitive scattering length and shows that nonadiabatic corrections are small and can even be adequately captured using the postadiabatic theory of Klar and Fano.

Abstract:A method of clarifying bioaerosol particles is proposed based on T-matrix. Size and shape characterizations are simultaneously acquired for individual bioaerosol particles by analyzing the spatial distribution of scattered light. The particle size can be determined according to the scattering intensity,while shape information can be obtained through asymmetry factor(AF) . The azimuthal distribution of the scattered light for spherical particles is symmetrical,whereas it is asymmetrical for non-spherical ones,and the asymmetry becomes intense with increasing asphericity. The calculated results denote that the 5 –10 scattering angle is an effective range to classify the bioaerosol particles that we are concerned of. The method is very useful in real-time environmental monitoring of particle sizes and shapes.

Abstract:Geodesic scattering of a test particle off a Schwarzschild black hole can be parametrized by the speed-at-infinity v and the impact parameter b , with a "separatrix," b=bc(v) , marking the threshold between scattering and plunge. Near the separatrix, the scattering angle diverges as ∼log(b−bc) . The self-force correction to the scattering angle (at fixed v , b ) diverges even faster, like ∼A1(v)bc/(b−bc) . Here we numerically calculate the divergence coefficient A1(v) in a scalar-charge toy model. We then use our knowledge of A1(v) to inform a resummation of the post-Minkowskian expansion for the scattering angle, and demonstrate that the resummed series agrees remarkably well with numerical self-force results even in the strong-field regime. Particle-Property Extraction Based on Scattering Ratio

Abstract:The distribution of forward small-angle scattering radiation is related to the particle size and optical thickness of the scattering medium. The forward small-angle scattering ratio, atmospheric optical thickness tau and the Angstrom index alpha of aerosol particles arc measured based on a new type of variable field photometer under different weather conditions. The results arc compared with the results of DISORT simulation. It is shown that the scattering ratio increases with increasing of optical thickness. However, when the optical thickness is less than 1, the scattering ratio would depend on the effective scale of the particle. The larger the particle, the smaller the scattering ratio. When the size of cirrus ice crystal is larger (D-e > 10 mu m.), the scattering ratio is smaller than that of aerosol particles and water clouds. This provides a new method to distinguish thin cirrus clouds with aerosols. A simple method for extracting optical thickness of cirrus clouds is presented. It is proved that the extinction coefficient of cirrus clouds is independent of wavelength in short wavelength band. The research provides a certain reference for ground based detection on atmospheric properties.
