Abstract:We synthesized segmented thermoplastic polyhydroxyurethanes (PHUs) by reacting one of three biowaste-derivable cyclic carbonates, NC-514-CC, Cyclo-CC or 1,3-BD-CC, with an amine chain extender, p -xylylenediamine ( p XDA) or 4,4′-methylenebis(2-methylcyclo-hexylamine) (MBC), and a butadiene/acrylonitrile copolymer (PBN) as soft-segment. While PHUs based on Cyclo-CC and 1,3-BD-CC exhibited strong nanophase separation and sharp glass transitions, the long, sterically hindered, and asymmetric structure of NC-514-CC resulted in a PHU with remarkable phase mixing, as indicated by small-angle X-ray scattering and dynamic mechanical analysis, in the absence of significant inter-phase hydrogen bonding. Facilitated by phase mixing, the NC-514-CC-derived PHU manifested good damping character (associated with tan δ ≥ 0.3) over a ∼120 °C temperature range without the need for inter-segment hydrogen bonding. Cyclic tensile hysteresis tests of the NC-514-CC-derived PHU exhibited outstanding energy dissipation of 72 kJ/m 3 in the first load-unload cycle and a high hysteresis ratio of 0.85 across ten cycles. By simply switching the chain extender from p XDA to bulkier, less symmetric MBC, the PHUs derived from Cyclo-CC and 1,3-BD-CC exhibited dramatically improved phase mixing, with the PHU synthesized from 1,3-BD-CC, MBC, and PBN showing an extraordinarily broad tan δ ≥ 0.3 temperature region almost continuously from −60 °C to beyond 90 °C, with tan δ falling slightly below 0.3 only from ∼−30 °C to ∼−20 °C.
