Abstract:Relating the Surface Electromyogram (sEMG) to joint angle is useful in various application areas, including exoskeletons control, ergonomics and clinical biomechanics. The angle of the wrist is an important command of the device of the upper limb. The most simple and intuitive way to introduce proportional control of the upper-limb, is to use estimated angles directly as control output signal. Estimation accuracy is affected by many factors, such as torque, tribological effect of electrode and the skin friction, electrode position and so on. In this work an attempt is made to improve the accuracy by changing the rotating torque and elbow positions. The regression analysis between wrist angle and sEMG at dynamic muscle activity in normal subjects were investigated with the backpropagation neural network. Then, the two factors analysis of variance for repeated measures was used to assess the quality of regression. The goal of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of predicting dynamic arm movements (pronation/supination) based on sEMG signals from four muscles. The main contribution of this study is that it is important to take into account the effect of torque and gestures change on the performance of proportional control by the sEMG. These results suggest that it is possible to improve the system's robustness by changing the two factors.

Abstract:As the increasing usage scenarios of tablet computers led to more non-neutral postures, optimizing the touchscreen gesture input became imminent to improve system performance and users’ well-being. Therefore, we conducted a study to investigate the influence of four tablet configurations and seven touchscreen gestures on electromyography, performance, and subjective assessment. Our results indicated that muscular loads of shoulder decreased under the Stand-Hand configuration while it increased under the Sit-Table during gesture interaction. We also found that Drag-Up and Drag-Left tended to possess higher muscular loads of shoulder while Drag-Down caused greater muscular loads of index finger. Besides, two-touch gestures spent longer duration when performing long-distance movements. Dragging in the inner direction was supposed to be more efficient than that in the outer direction. Our findings could provide a scientific basis for guiding the appropriate selection and the use of touchscreen interaction in the future HCI field.
Arm Movements Effect On Grasping Force Prediction Using Surface Electromyography Signals

Abstract:This study investigated the arm movements effect on the relationship between surface electromyography (EMG) signals and grasping force. An experiment was conducted with four static arm conditions and two dynamic arm conditions. Six able-bodied subjects participated in the experiment. Surface EMG signals were acquired from five forearm muscles to build a multiple linear regression model. Subjects were instructed to complete three kinds of calibration tasks to train the model and one voluntarily varying grasping force task to test the model performance. The grasping force exerted by each subject was limited to be lower than 50% maximum voluntary contraction (MVC) grasping force. Mean absolute difference (MAD) between predicted and observed grasping force was used to estimate the prediction performance. The window size of moving average filter was firstly optimized. Results showed that arm movements had a significant impact on grasping force prediction performance. Inter-condition MADs (training data and testing data are from different arm conditions) were greater than intra-condition MADs (training data and testing data are from the same arm condition, average 7.41% +/- 1.46% MVC vs. 6.03 +/- % 0.40% MVC, p = 0.023). A multi-condition training scheme was applied to attenuate the arm movements effect. The multi-condition training scheme was proved to be useful to improve the model robustness to the arm movements effect.

Abstract:Investigated forearm flexor and extensor sEMG、typing quality and subjective evaluation while using different keyboards and different typing speed.Method:Comparison of electromyography signals recorded from electrodes on the forearm flexor and extensor,we tested whether there were prominence differences between different keyboards and different typing speed with AEMG.And also compared the differences of the performance and subjective evaluation.Result:For flexor,the main effect was prominence between different keyboards.But for extensor,all effect were not prominence.There were prominence differences in subjective evaluation about wrist and there were no prominence differences in other body parts.Uses when the Acer effect keyboard the skill comfort level surpasses the use ordinary DELL keyboard,other differences did not demonstrate.Conclusion:It was better to reduce the workload of the flexor,to improve the subjective comfort while using work efficiency keyboard.
Development and Evaluation of an Optimization-Based Model for Power-Grip Posture Prediction

Abstract:An optimization-based model for power-grip posture prediction was proposed. The model was based on the premise that the hand prehensile configuration in a power grip best conforms to the object shape. This premise was embodied by an optimization procedure that minimized the sum of distances from the finger joints to the object surface. The model was evaluated against data from an experiment that measured the grasp postures of 28 subjects having diverse anthropometry. The intra- and inter-person variabilities in grip postures were empirically assessed and used as benchmark values for model evaluation. The evaluation showed that the root-mean-square (RMS) values of angle differences between the predicted and measured postures had a 13.7 degrees grand mean (across all joints, subjects, and two cylindrical handles grasped), whereas the RMS values of the inter- and intra-person variabilities in measured postures had grand means of 13.0 degrees and 4.4 degrees , respectively. The model can be readily generalized to the prediction of postures in power-grasping objects of different shapes, and adapted for testing alternative prehensile strategies or performance criteria.

Abstract:Human finger joints are conventionally simplified as rigid joints in robotic hand design and biomechanical hand modelling, due to their anatomic and morphologic complexity. However, our understanding of the effect of the finger joint configuration on the resulting hand performance is still primitive. In this study, we systematically investigate the grasping performance of the hands with the conventional rigid joints and the biomechanical flexible joints based on a computational human hand model. The measured muscle electromyography (EMG) and hand kinematic data during grasping are used as inputs for the grasping simulations. The results show that the rigid joint configuration currently used in most robotic hands leads to large reductions in hand contact force, contact pressure and contact area, compared to the flexible joint configuration. The grasping quality could be reduced up to 40% and 36% by the rigid joint configuration in terms of algebraic properties of grasping matrix and finger force limit respectively. Further investigation reveals that these reductions are caused by the weak rotational stiffness of the rigid joint configuration. This study implies that robotic/prosthetic hand performance could be improved by exploiting flexible finger joint design. Hand contact parameters and grasping performance may be underestimated by the rigid joint simplification in human hand modelling.

Comparison of Contact Interface Factors for Surface Electromyography Control Wearable Device

Abstract:Surface electromyography is commonly used as control signals for wearable devices. Compared to physical sensors, bioelectric signal are more sensitive to pressure and placement of interface. Discussion of these factors includes not only ergonomic issues but also control issues. Variations of the two factors in setup could lead to variability in output values. In this article, we mainly discussed the influence of the two factors, including contact pressure and placement, to estimate the elbow joint angles based on surface electromyography. To our knowledge, there has been no research about this problem. We first measured the surface electromyography signal with elbow flexion and extension motion, then estimated the angles of motion through the pattern recognition method, and finally assessed the distribution of contact pressure and the accuracy of regression. Our results indicated that the accuracy of angle recognition depends on the consistency of pressure distribution over the contact surface. The contact surface can be placed in the anterior of the upper arm at lower contact pressures. When high contact pressure is required, the placement of the strap should cover the muscle belly. The main contribution of this study is that our results can be used to guide the human–machine interface design of wearable devices.
An Ergonomic Golf Grip Leads to Lower Forearm Muscle Activity - A Prospective Case Series of 30 Right-Handed Amateur and Professional Golfers

Abstract:Background: The elbow is a common site for overuse injuries in golfers. Tendinopathies, such as medial and lateral epicondylitis, are frequently diagnosed in amateur and professional golfers. The aim of our study was to determine the effect of an ergonomic golf grip on forearm muscle activity during the five phases of the golf swing. Methods: Thirty right-handed golfers with a mean age of 32 years (range, 18-70 years) and a mean handicap of 15 (range, 0-43) performed 10 golf swings with a standard and ergonomic golf grip respectively. The mean and maximum muscle activity of the Musculus (M.) extensor carpi radialis brevis (ECRB), M. flexor carpi ulnaris (FCU), M. pronator teres (PT) and M. biceps brachii (BB) of the lead and trail arms were assessed during the five phases of the golf swing using surface electromyography (EMG). Subgroup analyses were performed regarding sex, playing ability (handicap < 10 vs. ≥10), weekly playing time (≤ 5 h, 5-20 h, > 20 h) and preexisting elbow pain during golfing (VAS < 2 vs. VAS ≥ 2). Significance was set at p < 0.05. Results: An ergonomic golf grip resulted in a reduction in muscle activity in at least one but up to three consecutive phases of the golf swing for the ECRB, FCU and PT of the lead arm and for the PT of the trail arm. Amateurs, a playing time < 20 h per week and golfers without preexisting elbow pain were factors that were associated with greater reductions in muscle activity. Conclusion: Forearm muscle activity can be decreased using an ergonomic golf grip, indicating the possible role of an ergonomic golf grip as a preventive measure against overuse syndromes such as medial and lateral epicondylitis. Prediction of anatomically and biomechanically feasible precision grip posture of the human hand based on minimization of muscle effort

Abstract:We developed a method to estimate a biomechanically feasible precision grip posture of the human hand for a given object based on a minimization of the muscle effort. The hand musculoskeletal model was constructed as a chain of 21 rigid links with 37 intrinsic and extrinsic muscles. To grasp an object, the static force and moment equilibrium condition of the object, force balance between the muscle and fingertip forces, and static frictional conditions must be satisfied. We calculated the hand posture, fingertip forces, and muscle activation signals for a given object to minimize the square sum of the muscle activations while satisfying the above kinetic constraints using an evolutionary optimization technique. To evaluate the estimated hand posture and fingertip forces, a wireless fingertip force-sensing device with two six-axis load cells was developed. When grasping the object, the fingertip forces and hand posture were experimentally measured to compare with the corresponding estimated values. The estimated hand postures and fingertip forces were in reasonable agreement to the corresponding measured data, indicating that the proposed hand posture estimation method based on the minimization of muscle effort is effective for the virtual ergonomic assessment of a handheld product.
Characteristics, Relationships, and Differences in Muscle Activity and Impact Load Attenuation During Tennis Forehand Stroke with Different Grips

Abstract:In forehand strokes with different grips in tennis, the forearm muscle activities, the distribution and attenuation of the impact loads, and the effects of the muscles on the impact load attenuation exhibited different characteristics. This study aimed to explore these characteristics by analyzing electromyography (EMG) and acceleration data, and comparing the differences between the Eastern and Western grips. Fourteen level II or above tennis players (ten males, aged 22.4 ± 3.6 years; four females, aged 19.8 ± 2.0 years) were recruited and instructed to perform forehand strokes using the Eastern and Western grips, respectively. The EMG of eight forearm muscles and the acceleration data at the ulnar and radial sides of the wrist and elbow were collected. The root mean square (RMS), the peaks of the impact load, the amplitude of impact load attenuation (AC), and the jerk value (Jerk) were calculated. The cross-correlation coefficients and time delays of EMG–EMG, EMG–AC, and EMG–jerk were obtained using the cross-correlation method. The results showed that in the Eastern grip group (group E), the RMS of the flexor carpi ulnaris (FCU) was significantly greater than that in the Western grip group (group W). In group E, the peaks of impact load, AC, and Jerk on the Y axis of the wrist ulnar side were all significantly higher than those in group W. The activity of the extensor digitorum commonis (EDC) had significantly different effects on the amplitude and rate of impact load attenuation at specific locations in different grips, especially at the elbow (p < 0.05). The conclusion indicated that the FCU exhibited higher levels of EMG activity in the Eastern grip. This grip responded to greater impact loads with more substantial and rapid attenuation on the wrist ulnar side. Furthermore, the EDC appeared to contribute more to the amplitude of impact load attenuation in the Western grip and to have a more significant influence on the rate of impact load attenuation in the Eastern grip, especially at the elbow. These results suggest that tennis players and coaches should pay more attention to improving the strength of the EDC and FCU, which can improve sports performance and comfort, as well as prevent sports injuries.

Abstract:Material handling tasks often lead to skeletal injury of workers. The whole-body static biomechanical modeling method based on virtual humans is the theoretical basis for analyzing the human factor index in the lifting process. This paper focuses on the study of humans' body static biomechanical model for virtual human ergonomics analysis: First, the whole-body static biomechanical model is constructed, which calculates the biomechanical data such as force and moment, average strength, and maximum hand load at human joints. Secondly, the prototype model test system is developed, and the real experiment environment is set up with the inertial motion capture system. Finally, the model reliability verification experiment and application simulation experiment are designed. The comparison results with the industrial ergonomic software show that the model is consistent with the output of the industrial ergonomic software, which proves the reliability of the model. The simulation results show that under the same load, the maximum joint load and the maximum hand load are strongly related to the working posture, and the working posture should be adjusted to adapt to the load. Upright or bent legs have less influence on the maximum load capacity of the hand. Lower hand load capacity is due to forearm extension, and the upper arm extension greatly reduces the load capacity of the hand. Compared with a one-handed load, the two-handed load has a greater load capacity.

Abstract:Wrist and hand biomechanics under full-body load are not fully understood. To identify potential anatomy-related differences in hand loading, 15 former collegiate athletes completed a 45-second handstand on a novel emed® pressure platform system. Center of pressure (CoP) and force distribution across the palmar surface were analysed during the stabilised phase. Maximum force, mean pressure, and contact area were calculated in four palmar anatomic subregions: hypothenar, thenar, metacarpals, and fingers. These values were related to ulnar variance measurements obtained from a participant handstand hold in a weight-bearing computed tomography machine. About 93% of participants shifted their CoP towards their dominant hand ( p < 0.001), and among all participants, the dominant hand applied an average of 8.91% ( p = 0.002) higher maximum force than the nondominant hand. The proportion of total mean force was highest in the hypothenar (47.1%) and thenar regions (36.5%). Every 1.00 mm increase in ulnar variance corresponded to a 2.8% increase in maximum force in the hypothenar region ( p = 0.037). This investigation emphasises the role of gymnastics hand dominance on left/right hand weight distribution and the importance of the hypothenar zone in distributing pressure during handstands. It also indicates that force transmission through the wrist to the palm is contingent on radioulnar positioning.

Influence of floor inclination on handle push and pull forces production of the upper limb

Abstract:Floor inclination can alter hand force production, and lower limb kinetics, affecting control operations, and threatening operator safety in various domains, such as aviation, naval, construction industry, or agriculture. This study investigates the effects of different floor inclinations, on handle push or pull force production. Participants performed maximal isometric contraction tasks requiring to exert a maximal voluntary force either by pulling or pushing a handle, at different floor inclinations from -30° to +30° about the transverse and longitudinal axes. Maximal hand force and Ground Reaction Forces about both feet were recorded. The results revealed non-equivalent variations in hand and feet responses as a function of inclination angle. Specifically, there was a significant reduction in handle push-pull force production, up to 70% (p < 0.001) for extreme inclinations, around both axes. This study provides critical data for design engineers, highlighting the challenge of production forces at steep angles.
Influence of Force-Length Relationship and Task-Specific Constraints on Finger Force-Generating Capacities

Abstract:Grip strength loss in extended and flexed wrist postures has been explained by reduced force-generating capacities of extrinsic finger flexor resulting from non-optimal length, owing to the force-length relationship. Recent works suggested that other muscles, especially wrist extensors, participate in this grip strength loss. The objective of this study was to clarify the role of the force-length relationship in finger force production. 18 participants performed maximal isometric finger force production during pinch grip (Pinch) and four-finger pressing (Press) tasks in four different wrist postures (extended, flexed, neutral, spontaneous). The maximum finger force (MFF), finger and wrist joint angles, as well as activation of four muscles were determined using dynamometry, motion capture, and electromyography. The force and length of the four muscles were estimated from joint angles and muscle activation using a musculoskeletal model. MFF decreased for flexed wrist during Pinch but remained stable across wrist postures during Press. The results suggested that the loss of pinch grip force in deviated wrist posture is partially related to force-length relationship of finger extensors. In opposition, MFF during Press was not influenced by the modulation of muscle capacities but was probably first limited by mechanical and neural factors related to finger interdependence

The Effect of Power Grip on Ulnar Variance A Computed Tomography Study of the Wrist and Elbow

Abstract:Although an increase in ulnar variance with power grip is well documented in the medical literature, there is a paucity of information concerning its mechanism. This concept was examined in five healthy individuals using computed tomography of their wrists and elbows. Images were obtained of both joints in the resting position and with maximum power grip. Ulnar variance at the wrist increased an average of 0.64 mm (range: 0.3 to 1.2 mm). While the ulnohumeral joint remained unchanged, the radiocapitellar distance shortened an average of 0.62 mm (range: 0.3 to 1.0 mm; p = 0.03), which correlated directly with the change at the wrist. Our study showed that the increase in ulnar variance with grip was due to proximal shift of the radius and not to any distal migration of the ulna, which may have clinical implications in reconstruction or arthroplasty of the elbow.
Isolating In-Situ Grip and Push Force Distribution from Hand-Handle Contact Pressure with an Industrial Electric Nutrunner

Abstract:Objectives: Grip force during hand tool operation is the primary contributor to tendon strain and related wrist injuries, whereas push force is a contributor to shoulder injuries. However, both cannot be directly measured using a single measurement instrument. The objective of this research was to develop and test an algorithm to isolate the grip and push force distributions from in-situ hand-handle pressure measurements and to quantify their distributions among industrial workers using an electric nutrunner. Methods: Experienced automobile assembly line workers used an industrial nutrunner to tighten fasteners at various locations and postures. The pressure applied by the hand on the tool handle was measured dynamically using pressure sensors mounted on the handle. An algorithm was developed to compute the push force applied to the handle of an electric pistol-grip nutrunner based on recorded pressure measurements. An optimization problem was solved to find the contribution of each measured pressure to the actual pushing force of the tool. Finally, the grip force was determined from the difference between the measured pressure and the calculated pushing pressure. Results: The grip force and push force were successfully isolated and there was no correlation between the two forces. The computed grip force increased from low to high fastener locations, whereas the push force significantly increased during overhead fastening. A significant difference across the participants' computed grip forces was observed. The grip force distribution showed that its contribution to total hand force was larger than other definitions in the literature. Conclusions: The developed algorithm can aid in better understanding the risk of injury associated with different tasks through the notion of grip and push force distribution. This was shown to be important as even workers with considerable power tool experience applied significantly more grip and push force than other participants, all of whom successfully completed each task. Moreover, the fact that both forces were uncorrelated shows the need for extracting them independently.

Abstract:The influence of external factors such as arm posture, hand loading and dynamic exertion on shoulder muscle activity is needed to provide insight into the relationship between internal and external loading of the shoulder joint. Surface electromyography was collected from 8 upper extremity muscles on 16 participants who performed isometric and dynamic shoulder exertions in three shoulder planes (flexion, mid-abduction and abduction) covering four shoulder elevation angles (30 degrees , 60 degrees , 90 degrees and 120 degrees). Shoulder exertions were performed under three hand load conditions: no load, holding a 0.5 kg load and 30% grip. It was found that adding a 0.5 kg load to the hand increased shoulder muscle activity by 4% maximum voluntary excitation (MVE), across all postures and velocities. Performing a simultaneous shoulder exertion and hand grip led to posture specific redistribution of shoulder muscle activity that was consistent for both isometric and dynamic exertions. When gripping, anterior and middle deltoid activity decreased by 2% MVE, while posterior deltoid, infraspinatus and trapezius activity increased by 2% MVE and biceps brachii activity increased by 6% MVE. Increased biceps brachii activity with gripping may be an initiating factor for the changes in shoulder muscle activity. The finding that hand gripping altered muscle activation, and thus the internal loading, of the shoulder may play an important role in shoulder injury development and rehabilitation.

Abstract:Abstract Background Operating an object by generating stable hand-grip force during static or dynamic posture control of the upper extremities simultaneously is an important daily activity. Older adults require different attentional resources during grip strength control and arm movements. However, the impact of aging and reaching movements on precise grip strength and stability control among older adults is not well understood. This study investigated the impact of aging and reaching movements on grip strength and stability control in both hands of the upper extremities. Methods Fifty healthy young adults (age: 28.8 ± 14.0 years) and 54 healthy older adults (73.6 ± 6.3 years) were recruited to perform isometric grip strength test at 20% maximal voluntary contraction as the target force during three manual precision tasks simultaneously: stationary task (without arm movements), forward-reach task, and backward-reach task. The average grip force (in kg) and coefficient of variation values (expressed as a percentage) during manual precision tasks were calculated to determine the quality of participants’ grip strength. The deviation error, absolute error, and force-stability index values were calculated to determine the strength control relative to the target force. Results For both the young and older groups, the force-stability index values in both hands were significantly higher during forward- and backward-reaching movements than in the stationary condition ( p < 0.05). The older group exhibited a significantly lower hand-grip strength and stability of strength control in both hands than the young group ( p < 0.05). Conclusions Aging and reaching task performance reduced the grip strength of participants and increased the variations in strength control of both hands relative to the target force, indicating that older adults exhibit poor grip strength and stability control when performing arm-reaching movements. These findings may help clinical therapists in establishing objective indexes for poor grip-stability control screening and developing appropriate rehabilitation programs or health-promotion exercises that can improve grip strength and stability control in older people.

Abstract:Objective. In this study, we proposed a dynamic voluntary contraction force estimation framework and implemented it for elbow-flexion force estimation during arm posture dynamically changing between pronation and supination. Approach. High-density surface electromyography (HD-sEMG) from biceps brachii and brachialis muscles and the elbow-flexion force were measured synchronously. The simplified Hill model was adopted to establish the relation between HD-sEMG and the elbow-flexion force. In the training process of the force estimation model, HD-sEMG data from static isometric elbow flexion tasks in two force modes (staircase and sinusoidal) and two postures (supination or pronation) were used. The nonnegative matrix factorization (NMF) algorithm was adopted to decompose HD-sEMG into activation patterns and the corresponding time-varying coefficient vectors. The major activation pattern was used to select the appropriate sEMG channels for extracting the input signal of the force estimation model. In the testing phase, the elbow-flexion force estimation during arm posture dynamically changing between pronation and supination was conducted. HD-sEMG was also decomposed using NMF algorithm. In this case, the concept of the major activation pattern is no longer applicable because the activation areas of biceps brachii and brachialis vary with the change of arm posture. An improved channel selection scheme based on the ratio of activation intensities was presented to extract the input signal of the well-trained simplified Hill model. Main results. (1) the improved channel selection scheme could locate effectively the primary muscle activation areas related to the change of arm posture; (2) the input signal extraction method based on the ratio of activation intensities obtained the best force estimation performance compared to the method based on all channels of HD-sEMG array and the method based on major activation pattern; (3) the force estimation performance was better when the simplified Hill model was calibrated with the sinusoidal force data rather than staircase data. Significance. This research provides an effective solution to realize muscle force estimation during a dynamic voluntary contraction task. It can be further extended to the research fields of biomechanics, sports, and rehabilitation medicine.

Abstract:Objective The purpose of this study was to develop an approach to predict hand posture (pinch versus grip) and grasp force using forearm surface electromyography (sEMG) and artificial neural networks (ANNs) during tasks that varied repetition rate and duty cycle. Background Prior studies have used electromyography with machine learning models to predict grip force but relatively few studies have assessed whether both hand posture and force can be predicted, particularly at varying levels of duty cycle and repetition rate. Method Fourteen individuals participated in this experiment. sEMG data for five forearm muscles and force output data were collected. Calibration data (25, 50, 75, 100% of maximum voluntary contraction (MVC)) were used to train ANN models to predict hand posture (pinch versus grip) and force magnitude while performing tasks that varied load, repetition rate, and duty cycle. Results Across all participants, overall hand posture prediction accuracy was 79% (0.79 ± .08), whereas overall hand force prediction accuracy was 73% (0.73 ± .09). Accuracy ranged between 0.65 and 0.93 based on varying repetition rate and duty cycle. Conclusion Hand posture and force prediction were possible using sEMG and ANNs, though there were important differences in the accuracy of predictions based on task characteristics including duty cycle and repetition rate. Application The results of this study could be applied to the development of a dosimeter used for distal upper extremity biomechanical exposure measurement, risk assessment, job (re)design, and return to work programs.
