Abstract:In recent years, metal-free graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) has emerged as a promising photocatalyst for environmental purification. However, the photocatalytic activity of pristine g-C3N4 is inevitably constrained by its inherent shortcomings. Gratifyingly, the intrinsic defect engineering is manifested to be a versatile approach in prominently maneuvering its pivotal properties referring to redox capacity. Though defective g-C3N4 exhibits huge prospects in removing pollutants, the literature on reviewing this hotspot research topic is presently unavailable. Hence, this review highlights the crucial roles of intrinsic defect engineering in the photocatalytic process of g-C3N4 for the first time. Firstly, the common strategies and basic principles for fabricating diverse intrinsic defects of g-C3N4 systematically are summarized. Secondly, the close relationship between defective structure and ameliorated photocatalytic efficiency revealed via characterization and theoretical calculations is elaborated, followed by the pertinent photocatalytic decontamination performance. Finally, the current controversies, challenges, and future development directions are outlined critically. It is anticipated to fill the existing knowledge gaps about the rational design and mechanism research of highly-efficient defective g-C3N4-based materials, thus essentially facilitating their further developments and applications in environmental remediation.
