Abstract:Technology holds tremendous promise for supporting older adults' performance of important everyday activities. However, truly inclusive design of technology-based solutions must account for diversity with respect to cognitive status. This talk will focus on empirical studies conducted under the umbrella of the Enhancing Neurocognitive Health, Abilities, Networks, & Community Engagement (ENHANCE) Center with an emphasis on designing inclusive prospective memory solutions for older adults with cognitive impairments. Initial usability studies will be discussed examining the usability and efficacy of novel technology solutions, including the use of smartwatches and digital assistants, to support prospective memory, the ability to remember and carry out an intention in the future, which is crucial for maintaining health, independence, and social connections.

Abstract:"Cognizing" (e.g., thinking, understanding, and knowing) is a mental state. Systems without mental states, such as cognitive technology, can sometimes contribute to human cognition, but that does not make them cognizers. Cognizers can offload some of their cognitive functions onto cognitive technology, thereby extending their performance capacity beyond the limits of their own brain power. Language itself is a form of cognitive technology that allows cognizers to offload some of their cognitive functions onto the brains of other cognizers. Language also extends cognizers' individual and joint performance powers, distributing the load through interactive and collaborative cognition. Reading, writing, print, telecommunications and computing further extend cognizers' capacities. And now the web, with its network of cognizers, digital databases and software agents, all accessible anytime, anywhere, has become our 'Cognitive Commons,' in which distributed cognizers and cognitive technology can interoperate globally with a speed, scope and degree of interactivity inconceivable through local individual cognition alone. And as with language, the cognitive tool par excellence, such technological changes are not merely instrumental and quantitative: they can have profound effects on how we think and encode information, on how we communicate with one another, on our mental states, and on our very nature.

Abstract:What we remember reflects both what we encounter, such as the intrinsic memorability of a stimulus, and our internal attentional state when we encounter that stimulus. Our memories are better for memorable images and images encountered in an engaged attentional state. Here, in an effort to modulate long-term memory performance, we manipulated these factors in combination by selecting the memorability of presented images contingent on individuals' natural fluctuations in sustained attention. Can image memorability and attentional state be strategically combined to improve memory? Are memorable images still well remembered during lapses in sustained attention, and conversely, can attentive states rescue memory performance for forgettable images? We designed a procedure to monitor participants' sustained attention dynamics on the fly via their response time fluctuations during a continuous performance task with trial-unique scene images. When high- or low-attentional states were detected, our algorithm triggered the presentation of high- or low-memorability images. Afterwards, participants completed a surprise recognition memory test for the attention-triggered images. Results demonstrated that memory performance for memorable items is not only resistant to lapses in sustained attention but also that memory cannot be further improved by encoding memorable items in engaged attentional states. On the other hand, memory performance for low-memorability images can be rescued by attentive encoding states. In sum, we show that both memorability and sustained attention can be leveraged in real time to maximize memory performance. This approach suggests that adaptive cognitive interfaces can tailor what information appears when to best support overall memory.

Abstract:We introduce a world vision in which data is endowed with memory. In this data-centric systems paradigm, data items can be enabled to retain all or some of their previous values. We call this ability "remembrance" and posit that it empowers significant leaps in the security, availability, and general operational dimensions of systems. With the explosion in cheap, fast memories and storage, large-scale remembrance will soon become practical. Here, we introduce and explore the advantages of such a paradigm and the challenges in making it a reality.

Abstract:How do people decide between maintaining information in short-term memory or offloading it to external reminders? How does this affect subsequent memory? This article presents a simple computational model based on two principles: A) items stored in brain-based memory occupy its limited capacity, generating an opportunity cost; B) reminders incur a small physical-action cost, but capacity is effectively unlimited. These costs are balanced against the value of remembering, which determines the optimal strategy. Simulations reproduce many empirical findings, including: 1) preferential offloading of high-value items; 2) increased offloading at higher memory loads; 3) offloading can cause forgetting of offloaded items ('Google effect') but 4) improved memory for other items ('saving-enhanced memory'); 5) reduced saving-enhanced-memory effect when reminders are unreliable; 6) influence of item-value: people may preferentially offload high-value items and store additional low-value items in brain-based memory; 7) greatest sensitivity to the effort of reminder-setting at intermediate rather than highest/lowest levels of task difficulty; 8) increased offloading in individuals with poorer memory ability. Therefore, value-based decision-making provides a simple unifying account of many cognitive offloading phenomena. These results are consistent with an opportunity-cost model of cognitive effort, which can explain why internal memory feels effortful but reminders do not.

Abstract:Human memory has notable limitations (e.g., forgetting) which have necessitated a variety of memory aids (e.g., calendars). As we grow closer to mass adoption of everyday Extended Reality (XR), which is frequently leveraging perceptual limitations (e.g., redirected walking), it becomes pertinent to consider how XR could leverage memory limitations (forgetting, distorting, persistence) to induce memory manipulations. As memories highly impact our self-perception, social interactions, and behaviors, there is a pressing need to understand XR Memory Manipulations (XRMMs). We ran three speculative design workshops (n=12), with XR and memory researchers creating 48 XRMM scenarios. Through thematic analysis, we define XRMMs, present a framework of their core components and reveal three classes (at encoding, pre-retrieval, at retrieval). Each class differs in terms of technology (AR, VR) and impact on memory (influencing quality of memories, inducing forgetting, distorting memories). We raise ethical concerns and discuss opportunities of perceptual and memory manipulations in XR.

Abstract:"Everyday technologies" have long been suggested as digital tools to improve life for and enhance care of persons with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD). Within this realm, there is a need to balance potential drawbacks of technologies with their ability to positively impact patient and care partner centered outcomes. To facilitate this goal, we endeavored to provide a common language and conceptual structure to understand digital technology use in ADRD care. Specifically, we describe the pathways by which researchers might develop and deploy technology, including via Cognitive offloading, Automation, Remote monitoring, Emotional/social support, and Symptom treatment (CARES). In addition, we highlight emerging issues in technology‐based care research and provide relevant caveats regarding application of digital technologies in the real world. This discussion provides a framework to organize science on the application of technologies to ADRD care in the future. Abstract:The neural basis of human memory is incredibly complex. We argue that the diversity of neural systems underlying various forms of memory suggests that any discussion of enhancing ‘memory’ per se is too broad, thus obfuscating the biopolitical debate about human enhancement. Memory can be differentiated into at least four major (and several minor) systems with largely dissociable (i.e., non-overlapping) neural substrates. We outline each system, and discuss both the practical and the ethical implications of these diverse neural substrates. In practice, distinct neural bases imply the possibility, and likely the necessity, of specific approaches for the safe and effective enhancement of various memory systems. In the debate over the ethical and social implications of enhancement technologies, this fine-grained perspective clarifies—and may partially mitigate—certain common concerns in enhancement debates, including issues related to safety, fairness, coercion, and authenticity. While many researchers certainly appreciate the neurobiological complexity of memory, the political debate tends to revolve around a monolithic one-size-fits-all conception. The overall project—exploring how human enhancement technologies affect society – stands to benefit from a deeper appreciation of memory’s neurobiological diversity.

Abstract:Humans routinely use external thinking tools, like pencil and paper, maps, and calculators, to solve cognitive problems that would have once been solved internally. As many youth face unprecedented exposure to increasingly capable technological aids, there is a growing pressure to understand children's cognitive offloading capacities and propensities, and what they stand to gain or lose as frequent offloaders in the modern world. In this article, we review emerging research on the development of cognitive offloading. Children as young as 4 years can engage in effective offloading strategies that follow principles similar to those used by adults—for example, greater recruitment of external support when tasks are more difficult. However, young children's strategies also show evidence of bias (sometimes inadequate and sometimes excessive offloading), lack of selectivity, and lack of self‐initiation. We also draw attention to important avenues for future research, working toward protecting and nurturing children's cognitive well‐being in the digital age.

Abstract:Neural networks augmented with external memory have the ability to learn algorithmic solutions to complex tasks. These models appear promising for applications such as language modeling and machine translation. However, they scale poorly in both space and time as the amount of memory grows --- limiting their applicability to real-world domains. Here, we present an end-to-end differentiable memory access scheme, which we call Sparse Access Memory (SAM), that retains the representational power of the original approaches whilst training efficiently with very large memories. We show that SAM achieves asymptotic lower bounds in space and time complexity, and find that an implementation runs $1,\!000\times$ faster and with $3,\!000\times$ less physical memory than non-sparse models. SAM learns with comparable data efficiency to existing models on a range of synthetic tasks and one-shot Omniglot character recognition, and can scale to tasks requiring $100,\!000$s of time steps and memories. As well, we show how our approach can be adapted for models that maintain temporal associations between memories, as with the recently introduced Differentiable Neural Computer.

Augmented Memory Computing: Dynamically Augmented SRAM Storage for Data Intensive Applications

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a novel memory-centric scheme based on CMOS SRAM for acceleration of data intensive applications. Our proposal aims at dynamically increasing the on-chip memory storage capacity of SRAM arrays on-demand. The proposed scheme called - Augmented Memory Computing allows an SRAM cell to operate in two different modes 1) the Normal mode and 2) the Augmented mode. In the Normal mode of operation, the SRAM cell functions like a standard 6 transistor (6T) SRAM cell, storing one bit of data in static format. While in the Augmented mode, each SRAM cell can store >1 bit of data (in a dynamic fashion). Specifically, we propose two novel SRAM cells - an 8 transistor (8T) dual bit storage augmented cell and a 7 transistor (7T) ternary bit storage augmented cell. The proposed 8T dual bit SRAM cell when operated in the Augmented mode, can store a static bit of data while also, simultaneously, storing another bit in a dynamic form. Thus, when operated in Augmented mode, the 8T SRAM cell can store two bits of data - one SRAM-like data and one DRAM-like data, thereby increasing or augmenting the memory storage capacity. On the other hand, the proposed 7T ternary bit storage augmented cell can either store a single SRAM data in Normal mode or can be configured to operate in Augmented mode, wherein it can store ternary data (3 levels (0,0), (0,1), (1,0)) in a dynamic manner. Thus, based on the mode of operation, the proposed augmented memory bit-cells can either store one static bit of data or >1 bit of data in a dynamic format. We show the feasibility of our proposed bit-cells through extensive simulations at Globalfoundries 22nm FDX node. It is worth mentioning, the novel scheme of augmented memory bit-cells can be seamlessly combined with existing in-memory computing approaches for added energy and throughput benefits.
Memory compensation strategies in everyday life: similarities and differences between younger and older adults

Abstract:Memory compensation strategies serve an important role in everyday functioning, especially in the face of cognitive decline. Research on the external memory compensation strategies employed by older adults has focused almost entirely on non-digital tools. Less is known about how memory compensation strategies might have changed due to the rapid and widespread uptake of digital technologies. In the current research, 208 younger adults and 114 older adults freely reported what internal or external memory strategy or tool they would use to accomplish 20 different everyday memory tasks. Participants' responses were coded as involving either internal (e.g. using a mnemonic) or external (e.g. writing a list) strategies, and then underwent further categorisation to classify types of internal and external strategies (e.g. digital or physical tool). Findings indicated that external strategies were much more prevalent than internal strategies for both younger and older adults, and that digital compensation strategies were prevalent for both age groups. There were age differences such that older adults reported more strategies overall, and were less likely to report digital tools, more likely to report physical tools, more likely to report environmental tools, and less likely to report social tools than younger adults. Positive attitudes to technology were associated with digital tool use for older but not younger participants. Findings are discussed in terms of existing theories and approaches to studying memory compensation strategies and cognitive offloading.
Encode-Store-Retrieve: Augmenting Human Memory through Language-Encoded Egocentric Perception

Abstract:We depend on our own memory to encode, store, and retrieve our experiences. However, memory lapses can occur. One promising avenue for achieving memory augmentation is through the use of augmented reality head-mounted displays to capture and preserve egocentric videos, a practice commonly referred to as lifelogging. However, a significant challenge arises from the sheer volume of video data generated through lifelogging, as the current technology lacks the capability to encode and store such large amounts of data efficiently. Further, retrieving specific information from extensive video archives requires substantial computational power, further complicating the task of quickly accessing desired content. To address these challenges, we propose a memory augmentation agent that involves leveraging natural language encoding for video data and storing them in a vector database. This approach harnesses the power of large vision language models to perform the language encoding process. Additionally, we propose using large language models to facilitate natural language querying. Our agent underwent extensive evaluation using the QA-Ego4D dataset and achieved state-of-the-art results with a BLEU score of 8.3, outperforming conventional machine learning models that scored between 3.4 and 5.8. Additionally, we conducted a user study in which participants interacted with the human memory augmentation agent through episodic memory and open-ended questions. The results of this study show that the agent results in significantly better recall performance on episodic memory tasks compared to human participants. The results also highlight the agent's practical applicability and user acceptance.

Abstract:This article explores the configuration of collective memory under the impact of the digital turn. In recent debates, there has been a marked tendency to interpret 'digital memory' as a new type of memory, which is radically different from the traditional conceptualization. Even leading authors in the field claim that the digital revolution implies the end of collective memory. However, I argue that despite the transformations that memory undergoes in the digital age, these changes do not imply a new ontology of memory but rather a materialization of the theoretical claims made by Memory Studies since the field's inception. To support this hypothesis, I analyze digital memory in relation to three topics: first, I focus on the problematic definition of collective memory to demonstrate how the digital realm allows us to rethink the social nature of memory through a different concept of the social. By contrasting Halbwachs' notion of the social, which forms the basis of memory studies, with the alternative proposal of Gabriel Tarde, I argue that the latter enables us to refine the concept of the 'collective' that we have inherited from the founding figure of memory studies. Second, I delve into the new ontology of the digital archive showing how it materializes one of the defining features of collective memory: its mobile, dynamic, and procedural nature. Lastly, I address the inversion of the dialectic between memory and forgetting to highlight the specificity of these practices in the digital environment. I demonstrate how these changes effectively implement, surpassing older technologies, the concept of collective memory as a distributed and dynamic technological process that shapes our shared representations of the past.
Memory Sharing for Handling Memory Overload on Physical Machines in Cloud Data Centers.

Abstract:Over-committing computing resources is a widely adopted strategy for increased cluster utilization in Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) cloud data centers. A potential consequence of over-committing computing resources is memory overload of physical machines (PMs). Memory overload occurs if memory usage exceeds a defined alarm threshold, exposing running computation tasks at a risk of being terminated by the operating system. A prevailing measure to handle memory overload of a PM is live migration of virtual machines (VMs). However, this not only consumes network bandwidth, CPU, and other resources, but also compels a temporary unavailability of the VMs being migrated. To handle memory overload, we present a memory sharing system in this paper for PMs in cloud data centers. With memory sharing, a PM automatically borrows memory from a remote PM when necessary, and releases the borrowed memory when memory overload disappears. This is implemented through swapping inactive memory pages to remote memory resource. Experimental studies conducted on InfiniBand-networked PMs show that the memory sharing system is fully functional. The measured throughput and latency are around 929 Mbps and 1.3 μ s, respectively, on average for remote memory access. They are similar to those from accessing a local-volatile memory express solid-state drive, and thus are promising in real applications.
Fornix and Uncinate Fasciculus Support Metacognition-Driven Cognitive Offloading

Abstract:People often use external tools to offload cognitive demands in remembering future intentions. While previous research has identified the causal role of metacognition in cognitive offloading, the neural mechanisms underlying this metacognitive control process remain unclear. To address this gap, we conducted a study with 34 participants using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) to investigate how connections between brain regions support metacognition-driven cognitive offloading. Behaviorally, we confirmed that under-confidence in using internal memory to execute delayed intentions predicts a bias towards using external reminders. At the brain level we found that the fractional anisotropy (FA) of the fornix, a memory-related white matter tract connected to the hippocampus, positively correlated with the bias in setting up reminders. Additionally, the FA of the left uncinate fasciculus, which links the hippocampus to the prefrontal cortex and is involved in memory error monitoring, negatively correlated with deviations from optimal reminder use. Furthermore, the FA of the superior longitudinal fasciculus, a tract involved in metacognitive monitoring, moderated how confidence influenced the use of reminders. Taken together, our findings reveal a temporal-frontal neural circuit underlying metacognition-driven cognitive offloading, and provide new insights into the interaction between metacognitive monitoring and control.

Disaggregated Memory with SmartNIC Offloading: a Case Study on Graph Processing

Abstract:Disaggregated memory breaks the boundary of monolithic servers to enable memory provisioning on demand. Using network-attached memory to provide memory expansion for memory-intensive applications on compute nodes can improve the overall memory utilization on a cluster and reduce the total cost of ownership. However, current software solutions for leveraging network-attached memory must consume resources on the compute node for memory management tasks. Emerging off-path smartNICs provide general-purpose programmability at low-cost low-power cores. This work provides a general architecture design that enables network-attached memory and offloading tasks onto off-path programmable SmartNIC. We provide a prototype implementation called SODA on Nvidia BlueField DPU. SODA adapts communication paths and data transfer alternatives, pipelines data movement stages, and enables customizable data caching and prefetching optimizations. We evaluate SODA in five representative graph applications on real-world graphs. Our results show that SODA can achieve up to 7.9x speedup compared to node-local SSD and reduce network traffic by 42% compared to disaggregated memory without SmartNIC offloading at similar or better performance.

Abstract:Increasing density based on bit size reduction is currently a main driving force for the development of data storage technologies. However, it is expected that all of the current available storage technologies might approach their physical limits in around 15 to 20 years due to miniaturization. To further advance the storage technologies, it is required to explore a new development trend that is different from density driven. One possible direction is to derive insights from biological counterparts. Unlike physical memories that have a single function of data storage, human memory is versatile. It contributes to functions of data storage, information processing, and most importantly, cognitive functions such as adaptation, learning, perception, knowledge generation, etc. In this paper, a brief review of current data storage technologies are presented, followed by discussions of future storage technology development trend. We expect that the driving force will evolve from density to functionality, and new memory modules associated with additional functions other than only data storage will appear. As an initial step toward building a future generation memory technology, we propose Artificial Cognitive Memory (ACM), a memory based intelligent system. We also present the characteristics of ACM, new technologies that can be used to develop ACM components such as bioinspired element cells (silicon, memristor, phase change, etc.), and possible methodologies to construct a biologically inspired hierarchical system.

Abstract:Human memory prioritizes the storage and recall of information that is emotionally-arousing and/or important in a process known as value-directed memory. When experiencing a stream of information (e.g. conversation, book, lecture, etc.), the individual makes conscious and subconscious value assessments of the incoming information and uses this as a metric to determine what to remember. In order to improve automatic recall of memory, previous memory augmentation systems have sensed users' physiological state to determine which sensory media should be prioritized. Here, we propose to prioritize memories using the affective state of individuals that the user is interacting with. Thereby, the proposed wearable Affective Memory Augmentation system uses affective information from the user's social companions in order to facilitate value-directed memory.

Abstract:Several major challenges, including an ageing population and declining workforce and the implementation of recent breakthrough therapies for Alzheimer disease, are prompting a necessary rethink of how people with neurodegenerative dementias are diagnosed and medically managed. Digital health technologies could play a pivotal part in this transformation, with new advances enabling the collection of millions of data points from a single individual. Possible applications include unobtrusive monitoring that aids early detection of disease and artificial intelligence-based health advice. To translate these advances to meaningful benefits for people living with a disease, technologies must be implemented within a system that retains the physician expert as a central figure in decision-making. This Perspective presents a new framework, termed the Digitized Memory Clinic, for the diagnostic pathway of neurodegenerative dementias that incorporates digital health technologies with currently available assessment tools, such as fluid and imaging biomarkers, in an interplay with the physician. The Digitized Memory Clinic will manage people across the entire disease spectrum, from the detection of risk factors for cognitive decline and the earliest symptoms to dementia, and will replace the present paradigm of a pure 'brick-and-mortar' memory clinic. Important ethical, legal and societal barriers associated with the implementation of digital health technologies in memory clinics need to be addressed. The envisioned Digitized Memory Clinic aims to improve diagnostics and enable precise disease-tracking prognostication for individuals with memory disorders and to open new possibilities, such as precision medicine for prevention and treatment.
