Abstract:<p>Condensable particulate matter (CPM) has attracted widespread interest due to its substantial contribution to total particulate matter concentration and small aerodynamic size. CPM has a complex and diverse composition. Its organic components mainly include alkanes, esters, alcohols, aromatic hydrocarbons, and ketones, and its inorganic components mainly include SO42−, Cl−, NO3−, F−, NH4+, Na, Ca, Fe, Mg, Al, K, and trace heavy metals. Some organic components in CPM belong to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) or volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which pose considerable threat to the environment. The main inorganic components and trace heavy metals in CPM are toxic. PAHs, VOCs, main inorganic components, and trace heavy metals, have been researched in previous studies, but these studies did not focus on CPM. Thus, this review explored these components, aiming to increase understanding of the toxic hazards, formation mechanism, and control methods of CPM.</p>

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper primarily explores the harmful substances in Condensable Particulate Matter (CPM) and their potential threats to the environment and human health, and attempts to propose corresponding control methods. Specifically: 1. **Research Background**: CPM has received widespread attention due to its significant proportion in total particulate matter concentration and its small aerodynamic size. The composition of CPM is complex and diverse. Organic components include alkanes, esters, alcohols, aromatic hydrocarbons, and ketones; inorganic components mainly include sulfates, chlorides, nitrates, fluorides, ammonium ions, sodium, calcium, iron, magnesium, aluminum, and trace heavy metals. 2. **Research Objectives**: The paper aims to enhance the understanding of harmful components in CPM (especially Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons PAHs and Volatile Organic Compounds VOCs) by reviewing existing studies, understanding their formation mechanisms and control methods, thereby reducing the toxic hazards brought by CPM. 3. **Main Content**: - The paper discusses in detail the forms, sources, hazards, and control strategies of PAHs in CPM. - It analyzes the relationship between CPM and VOCs, pointing out that CPM contains various VOCs, and briefly summarizes the sources, formation mechanisms, and negative impacts of VOCs on the environment and health. - It proposes future research directions for CPM, including developing efficient catalysts to remove three-ring and four-ring PAHs, and optimizing existing pollution control equipment to synergistically treat multiple pollutants. In summary, the paper aims to comprehensively understand the toxic components in CPM and their hazards, and to explore effective control measures to mitigate their adverse effects on the environment and public health.
