Abstract:ConspectusOver the past two decades, terahertz (THz) technology has undergone rapid development, driven by advancements and the growing demand for THz applications across various scientific and technological domains. As the cornerstone of THz technology, strong THz-matter interactions, especially realized as high THz intrinsic absorption in nanometer-thick materials, play a highly important role in various applications including but not limited to THz absorption/shielding, detection, etc. The rigorous electromagnetic theory has posited a maximum intrinsic absorption of 50% for electromagnetic waves by thin films, and the succinct impedance matching condition has also been formulated to guide the design of highly intrinsically absorbing materials. However, these theories face challenges when applied to the THz spectrum with an ultrabroad bandwidth. Existing thin films typically achieve a maximum intrinsic absorption within a narrow frequency range, significantly limiting the performance of THz absorbers and detectors. To date, both theoretical frameworks and experimental solutions are lacking in overcoming the challenge of achieving broadband maximum intrinsic absorption in the THz regime.In this Account, we describe how two-dimensional (2D) transition-metal carbide and/or nitride (MXene) films with nanometer thickness can realize the maximum intrinsic absorption in the ultrabroad THz band, which successfully addresses the forementioned longstanding issue. Surprisingly, traditional DC impedance matching theory fails to explain this phenomenon, while we instead propose a novel theory of AC impedance matching to provide a satisfactory explanation. By delving into the microscopic transport behavior of free electrons in MXene, we discover that intraflake transport dominates terahertz conductivity under THz wave excitation, while interflake transport primarily dictates DC conductivity. This not only elucidates the significant disparities between DC and AC impedance in MXenes but also underscores the suitability of AC impedance matching for achieving broadband THz absorption limits. Furthermore, we identify a high electron concentration and short relaxation time as crucial factors for achieving broadband maximum absorption in the THz regime. Although approaching the THz intrinsic absorbing limits, it still faces hurdles to the use of MXene in practical applications. First, diverse and uncontrollable terminations exist on the surface of MXene stemming from the synthesis process, which largely influence the electron structure and THz absorbing property of MXene. Second, MXene suffers from poor stability in the presence of oxygen and water. To address the above issues, we have undertaken distinctive works to precisely control the terminations and suppress the oxidation of MXene even at high temperature through surface and interface chemistry, such as low-temperature Lewis basic halide treatment and building a Ti3C2Tx/extracted bentonite (EB) interface. For practical application consideration, we proposed a copolymer-polyacrylic latex (PAL)-based MXene waterborne paint (MWP) with a strong intermolecular polar interaction between MWP and the substrate provided by the cyano group in PAL. This not only has strong THz EMI shielding/absorption efficiency but also can easily adhere to various substrates that are commonly used in the THz band. These studies may have significant implications for future applications of MXene nanofilms in THz optoelectronic devices.
Ultrathin MXene assemblies approach the intrinsic absorption limit in the 0.5–10 THz band

Abstract:Broadband and efficient terahertz absorbing films are crucial to high-performance terahertz detectors, which are in demand for next-generation wireless communications, astronomy, security screening, medical imaging and so on. Recent studies reported a series of two-dimensional materials for enhanced light absorption in terahertz waves, such as graphene, transition metal dichalcogenides and topological insulators, among others. However, it is still challenging to achieve the intrinsic thin-film absorption limit (50%) across the whole ultrabroad terahertz band. Here we demonstrate that ultrathin 10.2-nm-thick (~ λ /30,000) Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene assemblies can reach the intrinsic thin-film absorption limit across the entire 0.5–10 THz band. Such intriguing phenomena are attributed to the highly concentrated free electrons (~10 21 cm −3 ), short relaxation time (~10 fs) and unique intra- and interflake (hopping) electron transport properties in Ti 3 C 2 T x MXenes. Our results are validated by alternating current impedance theory using the Drude–Smith model, rather than classic direct current impedance matching. We believe that our findings will stimulate more studies of broadband terahertz technologies with MXenes and beyond, providing a route to developing compact, supercontinuum terahertz optoelectronic or photothermoelectric devices.

High-performance THz Metamaterial Absorber

Abstract:We demonstrated an ultra-broadband, polarization-insensitive and wide-angle metamaterial absorber for terahertz (THz) frequencies using arrays of truncated pyramid unit structure made of metal-dielectric multilayer composite. In our design each sub-layer behaving as an effective waveguide is gradually modified in their lateral width to realize a wideband response by effectively stitching together the resonance bands of different waveguide modes. Experimentally, our five layer sample with a total thickness 21um is capable of producing a large absorptivity above 80 40. The full absorption width at half maximum (FWHM) of our device is around 127 absorber design has high practical feasibility and can be easily integrated with the semiconductor technology to make high efficient THz-oriented devices.
Covalent coupling induced-polarization relaxation in MXene-based terahertz absorber for realizing dual band absorption

Abstract:Owing to the different electromagnetic (EM) wave dissipation mechanism, developing EM absorbing materials simultaneously compatible with both gigahertz (GHz) and terahertz (THz) bands is still a challenge while highly needed in 5G/6G communications. Here, we introduce the polarization loss into metallic Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene by constructing the polysiloxane/Ti 3 C 2 T x interface through a covalent chemistry strategy, followed by the directional-freezing process to obtain covalently bonded MXene based aerogel (CMXene). We find that the contribution of polarization relaxation and conduction loss are tunable by the heterogeneous interface, which largely affects impedance matching and the THz absorbing performance. As a result, the optimal CMXene displays the broad effective bandwidth (0.2–1.4 THz) and high absorption (reflection loss of 27.3 dB with thickness of 2.5 mm) in THz band. Meanwhile, it possesses high microwave absorption performance. Our findings unveil the role of polarization relaxation in tuning the THz absorbing property and may pave the way for designing GHz and THz dual band absorber that is applied to the 5G/6G applications.

Abstract:Ti3C2Tx is considered a candidate for high-efficiency microwave absorption materials due to its adjustable electrical conductivity, low density and high specific surface area in recent years. However, the single absorption mechanism could not meet the practical requirements as the functional microwave absorbers. Herein, 0D/1D/2D architectures of /MXene with 0D Co nanoparticles, 1D carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and 2D Ti3C2Tx MXene nanosheets were rationally fabricated to enhance the microwave attenuation performance, in which were in situ grown on Ti3C2Tx MXene nanosheets. By changing the amount of Ti3C2Tx MXene to optimize the impedance matching properties, the /M − -10 absorber exhibits excellent microwave attenuation performance with a minimum reflection loss of −50.5 dB at 5.9 GHz under a thickness of 4.0 mm. Meanwhile, the maximum effective absorption bandwidth (<―10 dB) of /M − -10 absorber can reach 5.8 GHz under 2.0 mm. The remarkable absorption performance can be ascribed to the synergistic effects of interface polarizations and magnetic loss. Moreover, the radar cross section (RCS) simulation was also performed via CST. Under the incident angle of 0°, the RCS reduction value of /M − -10 can reach 33.5 dBm2. This work provides a strategy for synthesizing MXene-based composite materials with tunable electromagnetic attenuation and wide absorption bandwidth performance.

Abstract:Since first synthesized in 2011, MXenes have attracted extensive attention in many scientific fields as a new two-dimensional (2D) material because of the unique physical and chemical properties. Over the past decade, in particular, MXenes have obtained numerous exciting achievements in the field of terahertz applications. In this review, we first briefly introduce the MXene materials, such as the basic structure and main fabrication processes of MXenes. Then, we summarize the recent applications of MXene materials in various terahertz research areas, including terahertz modulation, terahertz absorption, terahertz shielding, terahertz communication, terahertz detection and terahertz generation, in which the representative results are presented. Finally, we give an outlook on the future research directions of MXene materials and their potential applications.

Abstract:We present a metamaterial that acts as a strongly resonant absorber at terahertz frequencies. Our design consists of a bilayer unit cell which allows for maximization of the absorption through independent tuning of the electrical permittivity and magnetic permeability. An experimental absorptivity of 70% at 1.3 terahertz is demonstrated. We utilize only a single unit cell in the propagation direction, thus achieving an absorption coefficient alpha = 2000 cm(-1). These metamaterials are promising candidates as absorbing elements for thermally based THz imaging, due to their relatively low volume, low density, and narrow band response.

Broadband Terahertz Metamaterial Absorber Based on Graphene Resonators with Perfect Absorption

Abstract:The applications of terahertz waves and metamaterials in electromagnetic wave absorbers are one of the key focus areas of current interdisciplinary scientific research. In this study, we propose a metamaterial absorber composed of graphene double-open rectangular ring and graphene strip cross structures. The experiment uses numerical analysis software to study the proposed absorber. Transverse electric waves were normally incident on the absorber from the plane port, where resonance coupling was achieved. With an increase in the incidence angle alpha, the trough in the middle of the absorption spectrum continued to deepen. The bandwidth that the spectral absorption maintains above 0.9 is 2.88 GHz (1.260–1.548 THz). The maximum spectral absorption has reached 99.9%, which is approximately perfect absorption. The absorber under transverse magnetic wave incidence also exhibited a bandwidth advantage. As the Fermi energy continued to increase, the absorption bandwidth first increased and then decreased, and reached the maximum at ef = 0.5 eV. Simultaneously, the relative absorption bandwidth also reached its maximum. By adjusting the Fermi level of graphene, dynamic tuning of the metamaterial absorber could be achieved. Adjustment of the Fermi level shifted the absorption range and absorption bandwidth, and helped in controlling the increase in the relative absorption bandwidth. The findings of this study can be of theoretical and engineering significance in the domains of thermal photovoltaics, solar cells, and sensors, among others.

Abstract:Abstract We have successfully fabricated Ti-based MXenes flakes, Ti 3 C 2 T x , by chemical etching, then prepared it as an organic dispersion and finally spin-coated it on polyimide plastic substrate for terahertz wave shielding. The shielding effectivity of the 12 μ m ultra-thin film can reach up to 17 dB measured by the terahertz time-domain spectra. We can attribute the excellent phenomenon to the intrinsic absorption of triple-layered Ti 3 C 2 , due to the similar double-peak type refraction curves, which have been respectively observed from the experimental samples and the simulation ones. High conductivity and strong THz absorption indicate the Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene is the absorptive electromagnetic shielding material. Comparing with other kinds of THz shielding materials, the Ti-based MXenes might be a potential candidate for the next generation of ultra-thin and lightweight THz shielding.

Abstract:With the development of the fifth-generation (5G) communication technology, electromagnetic wave pollution in the military and civilian fields is becoming increasingly severe. To achieve highly efficient electromagnetic wave absorption (EMA), electromagnetic wave absorbing materials must be studied, including composites with both electric and magnetic loss mechanisms. Here, Ti3C2T x MXene@Zn–Mn ferrite (MXene@ZMF) composites were prepared by using a facile coprecipitation method incorporating magnetic ZMF nanoparticles coated onto the surface or inserted into the multilayers of MXene. The dielectric and magnetic losses and good impedance matching of these MXene@ZMF composites enhanced microwave absorption. The microwave absorption mechanism was established. The composite with 80 wt % MXene (denoted as MXene@ZMF-80%) exhibits enhanced EMA performance with a minimum reflection loss (RL min) of −69.86 dB at a frequency of 16.93 GHz and a maximum effective absorption bandwidth of 2.32 GHz. Therefore, this work provides a simple method for the design and fabrication of hybrid microwave absorbers employing dielectric and magnetic losses, beneficial for solving electromagnetic pollution problems.

V-Based MXene/MAX Heterostructure Composites with Enhancing Dielectric Loss for Broadband Microwave Absorption

Abstract:Electromagnetic wave absorption performance is strictly dependent on attenuation and impedance matching, which are directly influenced by the ratio of MXene/MAX in the multilayer structured MXene/MAX composites. However, there is still a challenge to achieve collaborative optimization of dielectric loss and impedance matching by precisely regulating the proportional relationship of MXene/MAX. Herein, V-based MXene/MAX heterostructure composites with different V2C/V2AlC ratios were successfully synthesized by rationally controlling the temperature and time of the hydrothermal reaction. Experimental results indicated that V2C-100 °C-1 harvested the balance between reduced impedance matching and enhanced dielectric losses, which was attributed to the mildly enhanced conduction loss and polarization loss. The first principles indicated that abundant electrons migrate from the V atoms of the MXene to the C atoms of the MAX phase. The charge redistributed and accumulated at the interface, exciting the increase in the dielectric loss of V2C-100 °C-1. As a result, the V2C-100 °C-1 heterostructure composite had an excellent electromagnetic absorption effect with a minimum reflection loss of -50.06 dB and a wide effective absorption bandwidth of 4.0 GHz (12.72-16.72 GHz). This work provides a valuable experience for the development of efficient MXene-based microwave absorbing materials.

Abstract:Excellent and wide-band absorption is of great benefit for lots of applications such as photoelectric conversions, photonics commutations as well as photovoltaic cells. Here, a simple MXene/Au-based metamaterial, consisting of a thick layer of Ti3C2Tx and Au-Nanorod, is studied through finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method for realization of tunable strong absorption in the visible and near infrared. The results show that the enhanced wide-band absorption with AMAX=0.99 can be realized for the proposed MXene/Au-based metamaterial. Moreover, the absorption can be effectively tuned by the structural parameters and polarization. These results may play an important role for designing plasmonic absorbers.

Abstract:In this paper, a tunable and ultra-broadband terahertz (THz) absorber is proposed. The absorber, which is built upon the conventional metal–dielectric–metal tri-layer configuration, incorporates a KCl thin film within the dielectric gap situated between the top resonator and the middle dielectric layer. The simulation indicates that the absorber effectively captures more than 90% of terahertz waves between 3.6 and 7.3 THz, achieving absorption of over 99% within the 5.8–6.9 THz range. This unique broadband absorber is enabled by the interaction of plasmon and epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) modes. Additionally, due to the utilization of VO 2 in the top resonator, the designed absorber holds potential to function as a thermally controlled radiation emitter, exhibiting a high emissivity of 90.5% at high temperatures while maintaining a low emissivity of 8.2% at low temperatures. The absorber is uncomplicated and adjustable, offering great potential for use in thermal management, terahertz camouflage, and engineering insulation.

Abstract:Transition metal carbide MXene, with its unique chemical composition, structure and sizeable particular surface area, is widely applied in wave absorption. However, the high conductivity of MXene resulted in an impedance mismatch that prevented electromagnetic waves from entering the material to achieve dissipation, and thus, tuning the intrinsic properties of pure MXene to obtain excellent electromagnetic wave absorption is still a challenge. Here, we strengthen the absorption of electromagnetic waves by generating titanium vacancies through hydrogen peroxide etching and thus forming micro-sized wrinkles with porous MXene. Porous MXene possesses an excellent microstructure and surface state, abundant porous defects, and moderate electrical conductivity, allowing it to achieve well-matched impedance, dipole polarization, and conduction loss, thus inheriting excellent electromagnetic wave absorption (EWA) properties. Therefore, the porous MXene achieves a strong absorption of − 63.31 dB and an adequate absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 6.88 GHz at a matched thickness of 2.39 mm with a fill ratio of 6 wt%.

Abstract:In recent years, Metamaterials, artificial electromagnetic materials that are constructed by subwavelength units, have demonstrated unusual abilities to manipulate electromagnetic waves and promised many potential applications. One of the most intriguing applications of metamaterials is to function as high performance absorbing medium. In this work, a newtype of plasmonic flexible metasurfacebased super-absorber for Terahertz waves is designed, fabricated and characterized. Dependences of absorption on the optical properties of component materials and geometric parameters are optimized by full-wave numerical simulations, and then confirmed by experiments. Experimental results showthat an absorption peak value of 99％ is obtained at the frequency of 3 THz, which are in good agreement with numerical simulations.

Abstract:The exploration for the potential lightweight and high efficiency microwave absorbers with thermal stability is a great challenge for researchers. More importantly, the electromagnetic parameters of absorbers at elevated temperatures are seldom studied. In this work, sandwich MXene‐Ti3C2Tx@flake carbonyl iron (MF) composites with tunable and efficient microwave absorption at elevated temperatures are successfully fabricated by an electrostatic self‐assembly method. Both the complex permittivity and permeability of the MF are strongly temperature dependent in the temperature range of 298–473 K and X band (8.2–12.4 GHz). The efficient microwave absorption of MF at different temperatures can be achieved by changing the ratio of raw materials. Specifically, at room temperature, reflection loss (RL) ≤−10 dB of MF composite covers the whole X band at 2.12 mm, while the optimum RL value is −26.3 dB at 11.81 GHz. At 373 K, the optimum microwave absorption value of the MF composite reaches up to −63 dB at 10.27 GHz and RL ≤−10 dB can cover a whole X band with a thickness of 1.52 mm. Therefore, MF composites are expected to be promising candidates as ultrathin, highly efficient, and broadband absorbing materials at elevated temperatures.
CeO2/Ti3C2Tx MXene Nanostructures for Microwave Absorption

Abstract:In this paper, a two-dimensional MXene loaded with CeO2 nanoparticles was successfully synthesized through a simple solvothermal sintering method. The nanocomposite obtained by mixing the CeO2/Ti3C2Tx MXene with paraffin at 30 wt % has a high reflection loss of -47.27 dB at a thickness of 1.9 mm and an effective absorption bandwidth of up to 4.22 GHz which is higher than that of a similar absorbing system. By adjusting the composition ratio and the thickness of the system, almost all S, C, X, and Ku bands can be covered. Its excellent performance benefits from the abundant oxygen vacancies brought by CeO2 nanoparticles in which Ce3+ and Ce4+ ions coexist and the rich microinterfaces brought by the CeO2-C-Ti3C2Tx sandwich structure. In addition, CeO2/Ti3C2Tx MXene nanocomposites also have high thermal stability. This research extends the thought on the design of high-performance microwave-absorbing materials.
Design and Performance of Ultrathin MXene Nano-Absorber for Visible and Infrared Spectra

Abstract:This paper introduces an ultrathin metamaterial absorber based on MXene, consisting of a subwavelength-sized periodic square-ring-shaped nano-cylinder operating in the visible-infrared regime. The proposed absorber consists of a three-layer standard configuration, featuring a top layer comprising a MXene nano-square cylinder, a middle dielectric material, and a bottom ground plane. It is observed that the proposed nano-absorber presents a broadband response and illustrates an absorption value of 90% across a large wavelength spectrum ranging from 400 to 2400 nm. This notable absorption is attributed to the localized surface plasmonic resonances (LSPR) induced at the top metasurface composed of periodic structures. The designed absorber exhibits a polarization-insensitive response and its due to the inherent symmetric nature of the constituent top unit cell. Furthermore, the absorber maintains stable absorption even at oblique angles up to 60°. The presented nano-absorber displays promising prospective for diverse applications, including solar cells, energy harvesting, and thermal imaging.

Abstract:An MXene material absorbs visible and IR light which makes a MXene-based solar absorber an ideal absorber. Here, we propose a high-absorption broadband absorber based on an array of MXene composite cylinder ring structures. The structure designed in this article fully utilizes the MXene material's large surface area to volume ratio, and in the wavelength range of 300-5000 nm, the average absorption efficiency is as high as 98.44%, and the energy absorption rate in the AM 1.5 solar radiation spectrum is 98.76%. The absorption characteristics of the absorber are analyzed by using the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method. The electric and magnetic field patterns indicate that the high absorption performance is attributed to the coupling effect of surface plasmon resonance and gap surface plasmon resonance. Furthermore, the absorber exhibits insensitivity to the polarization angle and demonstrates high absorption efficiency even at large incidence angles. Within a certain manufacturing tolerance range, the absorber can still maintain its broadband absorption characteristics. The absorber also shows a high thermal emissivity of 98.5% when the temperature is 1750 K. The findings offer a theoretical foundation for the development of absorption metamaterials for solar energy harvesting elements.

Abstract:Microwave absorbing materials (MAMs) have been used to address electromagnetic pollution for both civil and military applications, and MAMs with broadband microwave absorption still remain a challenge. The microwave absorption performance of Ti 3 CNT x MXene is poor due to impedance mismatch. Modification of Ti 3 CNT x with magnetic materials is an effective way to improve the impedance matching and increase the effective absorption bandwidth (EAB). Here, 2D Ti 3 CNT x based magnetic composites were successfully prepared by an electrostatic self-assembly method. The microwave absorption properties of the composites were investigated by varying the loading of Ti 3 CNT x in the composites and the filling ratio of the composites in the absorber. The EAB can reach 4.75 GHz with an absorber thickness of only 1.32 mm. Integrated with a macroscale multilayer periodic gradient design, the FCM (/Ti 3 CNT x ) composites based metastructure exhibits broadband microwave absorption with an EAB of 12.5 GHz ranging from 5.5 GHz to 18 GHz at a total thickness of 4.5 mm. The microwave attenuation mechanisms were studied by dielectric loss, magnetic loss and impedance matching. The multi-scale development of MXene-based magnetic composites makes them possible to applied to broadband microwave absorption.
