Abstract:This study aimed to explore the impact of longitudinal and circular fin configurations on the melting dynamics and thermal performance of latent heat storage (LHS) systems utilizing phase change materials (PCMs). Through comprehensive 3D numerical analysis, the effects of fin orientation, number, and arrangement were systematically examined to identify optimized designs for enhancing energy storage efficiency. The results revealed that strategically inclined longitudinal fins at 45° reduced complete melting time by 33.1% and increased heat storage rate by 77.8% compared to vertical fins, while increasing fin number from 4 to 10 yielded 22% faster melting and 48% higher storage capacity. Exploring circular fins showed the vertical orientation as optimal, decreasing melting duration by 54.4% and boosting heat storage by 218.3 W versus inclined fins. Raising circular fin number from 17 to 34 improved performance by 28.1% (melting time) and 19.4% (heat storage rate). Comparing the best longitudinal (10 angled fins) and circular (34 vertical fins) cases highlighted the latter's remarkable 28.13% faster melting and 19.4% greater storage rate, highlighting vertical circular fins' superiority. These quantitative insights on fin parameters and orientations can significantly enhance the LHS efficiency and application.
