From High School to University: A Critic of the Indonesian Education System

Abstract:This paper addresses the current practice of transition between high school and university for students currently studying in Indonesia. First, this paper discusses the schooling system in Indonesian schools, and how it works to prepare students when they finish high school. It then examines whether the high school experience gives adequate preparation for students who would like to study at university or college. Three cases are presented in order to provide a fuller picture of how the transition from high school to university actually happens. Three students from the English department at Manado State University Indonesia took part in the study. Through interviews and their narratives, the students' perception of moving from high school to university was explored; in particular, their experiences with their high school education. Their information can be used to address the practices of transition from high school to university. Findings showed that there is a discrepancy between the practices and what was intended to happen according to the system. The study is expected to inform decision-makers about the necessity to evaluate the current system and make changes accordingly.
