Abstract:Implantable flexible electronic has attracted significant research interest in various fields. However, it still faces the challenge of simultaneously achieving tight adhesion to tissues in a mildly wet environment and possessing excellent biocompatibility to reduce immune rejection reactions after implantation. Here, a degradable wet-adhesive flexible electronic device based on liquid metal and ultrathin gelatin film is developed. The ultrathin gelatin film forms numerous hydrogen bonds with tissue in a slightly humid environment, rapidly constructing a wet-adhesive interface without damaging tissue structure. Inkjet printing is utilized to pattern the mixture of liquid metal and PVP on the surface of the ultrathin gelatin to create flexible patch. With the excellent conductivity of liquid metal, low toxicity, and similarity to natural tissue components of gelatin, flexible patch exhibits outstanding biocompatibility and fatigue resistance. It can be implanted in the body for up to 6 weeks, retaining monitoring capabilities and resisting 1 000 000 cycles of bending fatigue. This study provides a novel strategy for the future development of implantable flexible electronics. Through the self-leveling and self-evaporative properties of gelatin solution, nano-scale flexible transparent films are obtained. Leveraging its adhesive properties with a mixture of liquid metal, wet-adhesive flexible electronic devices are fabricated, enabling rapid adhesion in moist environments in vivo and improving the accuracy and stability of implanted monitoring. image

Abstract:Managing the mechanical mismatch between hard semiconductor components and soft biological tissues represents a key challenge in the development of advanced forms of wearable electronic devices. An ultralow modulus material or a liquid that surrounds the electronics and resides in a thin elastomeric shell provides a strain-isolation effect that enhances not only the wearability but also the range of stretchability in suitably designed devices. The results presented here build on these concepts by (1) replacing traditional liquids explored in the past, which have some nonnegligible vapor pressure and finite permeability through the encapsulating elastomers, with ionic liquids to eliminate any possibility for leakage or evaporation, and (2) positioning the liquid between the electronics and the skin, within an enclosed, elastomeric microfluidic space, but not in direct contact with the active elements of the system, to avoid any negative consequences on electronic performance. Combined experimental and theoretical results establish the strain-isolating effects of this system, and the considerations that dictate mechanical collapse of the fluid-filled cavity. Examples in skin-mounted wearable include wireless sensors for measuring temperature and wired systems for recording mechano-acoustic responses.

Abstract:Gallium-based liquid metal has gained significant attention in conformal flexible electronics due to its high electrical conductivity, intrinsic deformability, and biocompatibility. However, the fabrication of large-area and highly uniform conformal liquid metal films remains challenging. Interfacial self-assembly has emerged as a promising method, but traditional approaches face difficulties in assembling liquid metal particles. Here, we realized the multi-size universal self-assembly (MUS) for liquid metal particles with various diameters ( 100 cm 2 ) and high floating yield (50–90%). Moreover, the films can be conformally transferred onto complex surfaces such as human skin, allowing for the fabrication of substrate-free flexible devices. This eliminates interference from traditional substrate mechanical responses, making the liquid metal e-tattoo more user-friendly.

Abstract:Liquid-metal (LM)-based flexible and stretchable electronics has attracted widespread attention in soft robotics, self- powered devices and electronic skins. Although nanometerization can facilitate the deposition and patterning of LMs onto substrates, subsequent mechanical or laser sintering operations must be employed to recover their conductivity, which limits their wider standardized applications. To address this critical challenge, a novel self-sintering technique to prepare thin conductive patterns by employing a special LM-LAPONITE (R) (LML) ink is presented, which utilizes the capillary force between nanoparticles to sinter LM droplets and therefore requires no subsequent sintering operations. The LML ink is prepared by sonicating the mixture of bulk LM and LAPONITE (R) aqueous dispersion and possesses excellent fluidity. A theoretical model based on surface tension is established to explain the spontaneous sintering process and the effect of forces on LM droplets. In contrast to conventional passive sintering strategies, this self-sintering strategy is substrate-friendly and available to more types of substrates, including both rigid and soft substrates, and even fragile materials like leaves. Furthermore, several typical flexible electronic devices including near-field communication (NFC) tags, leaf circuits and data gloves are fabricated and investigated to demonstrate the capability of this strategy for directly manufacturing LM-based flexible electronic devices.

Abstract:Comfort and mechanical stability are vital for epidermal electronics in daily use. In situ deposition of circuitry without the protection of substrates or encapsulation can produce imperceptible, conformal, and permeable epidermal electronics. However, they are easily destroyed by daily wear because the binding force between deposited materials and skin is usually weak. Here, we in situ deposited skin-adhesive liquid metal particles (ALMP) to fabricate epidermal electronics with robust wear resistance. It represents the most wear-resistant in situ deposited epidermal electronic materials. It can withstand ∼1600 cm, 175 g loaded paper tape wearing by a standard abrasion wear tester. Stretchability, conformality, permeability, and thinness of the ALMP coating provide an imperceptible and comfortable wearing experience. Without degradation of electrical property caused by solvent evaporation, the dry ALMP coating possesses natural advantages over gel electrodes. In situ deposited ALMP is an ideal material for fabricating comfortable epidermal electronics.

Abstract:The application of three-dimensional common electronics that can be directly pasted on arbitrary surfaces in the fields of human health monitoring, intelligent robots and wearable electronic devices has aroused people's interest, especially in achieving stable adhesion of electronic devices on biological dynamic three-dimensional interfaces and high-quality signal acquisition. In recent years, liquid metal (LM) materials have been widely used in the manufacture of flexible sensors and wearable electronic devices because of their excellent tensile properties and electrical conductivity at room temperature. In addition, LM has good biocompatibility and can be used in a variety of biomedical applications. Here, the recent development of LM flexible electronic printing methods for the fabrication of three-dimensional conformal electronic devices on the surface of human tissue is discussed. These printing methods attach LM to the deformable substrate in the form of bulk or micro-nano particles, so that electronic devices can adapt to the deformation of human tissue and other three-dimensional surfaces, and maintain stable electrical properties. Representative examples of applications such as self-healing devices, degradable devices, flexible hybrid electronic devices, variable stiffness devices and multi-layer large area circuits are reviewed. The current challenges and prospects for further development are also discussed.

Abstract:This article introduces an electrically conductive adhesive with liquid metal and silver that is flexible, highly electrically conductive, robustly adhesive, and processable at low temperatures. This overcomes several challenges for component integration in hybrid electronic systems and provides a path forward for emerging applications in soft electronics, soft robotics, and multifunctional systems. Electrical and mechanical integration approaches are essential for emerging hybrid electronics that must robustly bond rigid electrical components with flexible circuits and substrates. However, flexible polymeric substrates and circuits cannot withstand the high temperatures used in traditional electronic processing. This constraint requires new strategies to create flexible materials that simultaneously achieve high electrical conductivity, strong adhesion, and processibility at low temperature. Abstract:EGaIn droplets are uniformly dispersed into elastomer, which contain dynamic disulfide, catechol groups, and carboxyl groups to endow the composite elastomer with stretchable conductivity (up to 1.3 × 104 S m−1), self‐healing, reversible wet adhesion, and thermal processability. The composite elastomer of LM is an ideal candidate for bioelectronics. When serving as self‐adhesive bioelectrode, it can detect human electromyography signals. Stretchable conductors with the combination of high elasticity and electric conductivity have long been pursued in soft electronics. Liquid metals (LMs), whose mechanical properties match well with the elastomeric matrix, have been successfully applied in soft robotics, electronic skins and wearable devices. But it remains challenging to develop conductive composite elastomers of LMs with reversible adhesion and self‐healing. Herein, EGaIn droplets are uniformly dispersed into elastomer, which contain dynamic disulfide to endow the composite elastomer with thermal processability, recyclability, reversible wet adhesion, and self‐healing. With the EGaIn content of ≥40 vol.%, the resultant composite elastomer shows the electric conductivity of 1.3 × 104 S m−1, self‐healing in 8.0 h, and reversible wet adhesion strength up to 670 kPa after curing for 2.0 h. When serving as conductive adhesive, it can easily adhere to the metal electrode to light up the LED even when stretched to 50%. When serving as self‐adhesive bioelectrode, it can also detect human electromyography signals. Thus, not only may this study provide a new platform of designing self‐adhesive, self‐healing, and conductive composite elastomers of liquid metals, but their reversible wet adhesion and self‐healing also promise the facileness of building damage‐endurable soft electronics and applying to human–machine interfaces.

Abstract:Liquid metal (LM)-based elastomers have received growing interest for a wide range of applications such as soft robotics and flexible electronics. This work reports a stretchable and bendable liquid metal droplets embedded elastomer (LMDE) composite, which consists of liquid metal droplets (LMDs) filler and carbonyl iron particles (CIPs)/polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) hybrid matrix. The reversible switching of the composite from an insulator to a conductor can be realized through the contact and noncontact process between the LMDs. The mechanism of constructing the controllable conductive path between the droplets under external deformations has been systematically studied, and this result also provides a basis model for analyzing the conductive networks in traditional LM-based flexible composites. The composites exhibit stable mechanical and electrical performance under different tensile strains and bending angles. Moreover, the fluidic nature of LM endows the composite with good electrically healing capability. The valuable LM can be easily recycled at a high recovery rate of 98%. Finally, the composite can be developed as a sensor for the detection of both compressive force and magnetic field, demonstrating a broad promising in flexible electronics, actuators, and wearable devices.
A Highly Stretchable and Permeable Liquid Metal Micromesh Conductor by Physical Deposition for Epidermal Electronics

Abstract:Stretchable electronics allow functional devices to integrate with human skin seamlessly in an emerging wearable platform termed epidermal electronics. Compliant conductors represent key building components for functional devices. Among the various candidates, gallium-based liquid metals stand out with metallic conductivity and inherent deformability. Currently, the widespread applications of liquid metals in epidermal electronics are hindered by the low steam permeability and hence unpleasant wearing perceptions. In this study, a facile physical deposition approach is established to create a liquid metal micromesh over an elastomer sponge, which exhibits low sheet resistance (∼0.5 Ω sq–1), high stretchability (400% strain), and excellent durability. The porous micromesh shows textile-level permeability to achieve long-term wearing comfort. The conformal interaction of the liquid metal micromesh with the skin gives rise to a low contact impedance. An integrated epidermal sensing sleeve is demonstrated as a human–machine interface to distinguish different hand gestures by recording muscle contractions. Abstract:Soft materials are crucial for epidermal interfaces in biomedical devices due to their capability to conform to the body compared to rigid inorganic materials. Gels, liquids, and polymers have been extensively explored, but they lack sufficient electrical and thermal conductivity required for many application settings. Gallium-based alloys are molten metals at room temperature with exceptional electrical and thermal conductivity. These liquid metals and their composites can be directly applied onto the skin as interface materials. In this Spotlight on Applications, we focus on the rapidly evolving field of liquid metal-enabled epidermal interfaces featuring unique physical properties beyond traditional gels and polymers. We delve into the role of liquid metal in electrical and thermal biointerfaces in various epidermal applications. Current challenges and future directions in this active area are also discussed.

Abstract:Liquid metal–elastomer composite is a promising soft conductor for skin-interfaced bioelectronics, soft robots, and others due to its large stretchability, ultrasoftness, high electrical conductivity, and mechanical-electrical decoupling. However, it often suffers from deformation-induced leakage, which can smear skin, deteriorate device performance, and cause circuit shorting. Besides, antimicrobial property is desirable in soft conductors to minimize microbial infections. Here, we report phase separation–based synthesis of porous liquid metal–elastomer composites with high leakage resistance and antimicrobial property, together with large stretchability, tissue-like compliance, high and stable electrical conductivity over deformation, high breathability, and magnetic resonance imaging compatibility. The porous structures can minimize leakage through damping effects and lower percolation thresholds to reduce liquid metal usage. In addition, epsilon polylysine is loaded into elastic matrices during phase separation to provide antimicrobial property. The enabled skin-interfaced bioelectronics can monitor cardiac electrical and mechanical activities and offer electrical stimulations in a mechanically imperceptible and electrically stable manner even during motions.

Abstract:Conformable epidermal printed electronics enabled from gallium-based liquid metals (LMs), highly conductive and low-melting-point alloys, are proposed as the core to achieving immediate contact between skin surface and electrodes, which can avoid the skin deformation often caused by conventional rigid electrodes. When measuring signals, LMs can eliminate resonance problems with shorter time to reach steady state than Pt and gelled Pt electrodes. By comparing the contact resistance under different working conditions, it is demonstrated that both ex vivo and in vivo LM electrode-skin models have the virtues of direct and immediate contact with skin surface without the deformation encountered with conventional rigid electrodes. In addition, electrocardio electrodes composed of conformable LM printed epidermal electronics are adopted as smart devices to monitor electrocardiogram signals of rabbits. Furthermore, simulation treatment for smart defibrillation offers a feasible way to demonstrate the effect of liquid metal electrodes (LMEs) on the human body with less energy loss. The remarkable features of soft epidermal LMEs such as high conformability, good conductivity, better signal stability, and fine biocompatibility represent a critical step towards accurate medical monitoring and future smart treatments.

Abstract:Soft devices, especially capacitive stress (or strain) sensors, are important for applications, including wearable medical monitoring, electronic skin, and soft robotics. The incorporation of liquid metal particles (LMPs) into highly deformable elastomers as inclusions ameliorates the mechanical compliance caused by a rigid filler. The high dielectric constant and liquid feature of LMPs are suitable for soft sensors with high sensitivity and a large real-time dynamic detection range. Here, a class of LM-elastomer composites are introduced with elastic and high dielectric properties, making them uniquely suitable for the application of soft stress sensors. The prepared stretchable soft stress sensor can detect the bending degree of the finger, monitor physiological signals in real time, and distinguish the vibration from the pronunciation of different letters. The nanoscale X-ray computational tomography (nano-CT) measurements indeed detect the changes of LMPs under stress, i.e., LMPs in the matrix distribute from uneven to relatively uniform, agglomerate, and even connect each other to have a conduction path in the composition with high LMP contents, which cause the changes in the physical properties of devices under operation. The cognition of LMP changes in composites under stress is instructive for promoting their further applications in the field of soft devices.

Abstract:As an emerging functional material, liquid metal–hydrogel composites exhibit excellent biosafety, high electrical conductivity, tunable mechanical properties and good adhesion, thus providing a unique platform for a wide range of flexible electronics applications such as wearable devices, medical devices, actuators, and energy conversion devices. Through different composite methods, liquid metals can be integrated into hydrogel matrices to form multifunctional composite material systems, which further expands the application range of hydrogels. In this paper, we provide a brief overview of the two materials: hydrogels and liquid metals, and discuss the synthesis method of liquid metal–hydrogel composites, focusing on the improvement of the performance of hydrogel materials by liquid metals. In addition, we summarize the research progress of liquid metal–hydrogel composites in the field of flexible electronics, pointing out the current challenges and future prospects of this material.

Abstract:Conventional rigid electronics are usually unconformable with soft skins and tend to fail in accurate physiological monitoring and precise treatment. Electronic skins (e-Skins) made by conductive and stretchable materials offer mechanical compliance for fabricating flexible and conformable wearables. Compared to common organic or inorganic conductive materials, gallium-based liquid metals alone own superior conductivity and compliance. Here, we demonstrate a highly conductive and stretchable electronic skin with liquid metal circuits (LMCs) embedded in silicone rubber film, which are functionalized for physiological signals monitoring. Through the designs of serpentine structure, LMCs maintained good electrical conductivity and functionality under over 100% strain. Also, a wearable electrocardiogram (ECG) recording device was fabricated and tested. The device was able to acquire steady signals during real-time measurement of physical activities. The proposed liquid metal e-Skin can be further extended to conformable bio-integrated healthcare devices and intelligent health monitoring networks.
Highly Permeable and Ultrastretchable Liquid Metal Micromesh for Skin-Attachable Electronics

Abstract:Stretchable electronics represents an emerging technology for next-generation smart wearables toward intimate integration with the human body. In contrast with functional devices constructed over elastomer films with limited moisture permeability, a soft electronic textile may represent the ideal skin-attachable platform to achieve long-term wearing comfort. The advancements in this active area largely hinge on a new generation of permeable conductor. Despite its intrinsic mechanical deformability, gallium-based liquid metal typically represents an impenetrable barrier for gases and liquids. In this study, we introduce a liquid metal micromesh on electrospun microfiber textile as a highly permeable and ultrastretchable conductor. The fabrication process involves dropcasting liquid metal onto an elastomeric microfiber textile followed by high-speed rotation to remove the excessive coating. The liquid metal micromesh exhibits low sheet resistance (0.38 Ω/sq), ultrahigh stretchability (>1000% strain), and mechanical durability. The porous morphology enables a high steam permeability and perception of comfort comparable to those of standard textiles. The conformal interface with the skin gives rise to low contact impedance better than that of state-of-the-art Ag/AgCl gel electrodes. Abstract:Low water vapor and air permeability is a persistent challenge in wearable and on-skin electronics, as it reduces wearing comfort, and leads to skin irritation and inflammation in the long term. To tackle this issue, Zheng and coworkers designed a stretchable conductor based on an elastomeric fiber mat coated by liquid metal. After simple activation via stretching, the flexible conductor was endowed with excellent permeability, good stretchability, exceptional electrical stability, and good biocompatibility, ascribed to the mesh-like structure and the vertically buckled structure of the liquid metal. Based on the intriguing properties of the material, it was employed in a multi-functional wearable device, able to detect the heartbeat and sweat while serving as a heating device.
