Abstract:Given a monomial ideal I , we study two functions that quantify ways to measure the difference between symbolic powers and usual powers of I . In many cases we determine the asymptotic growth rate of these two functions. We also perform explicit computations by using the symbolic polyhedron.

Abstract:Symbolic powers are studied in the combinatorial context of monomial ideals. When the ideals are generated by quadratic squarefree monomials, the generators of the symbolic powers are obstructions to vertex covering in the associated graph and its blowups. As a result, perfect graphs play an important role in the theory, dual to the role played by perfect graphs in the theory of secants of monomial ideals. We use Gröbner degenerations as a tool to reduce questions about symbolic powers of arbitrary ideals to the monomial case. Among the applications are a new, unified approach to the Gröbner bases of symbolic powers of determinantal and Pfaffian ideals.

Abstract:In this article, our aim is to extend the class of monomial ideals for which symbolic and ordinary powers coincide. This property has been characterized for the class of edge ideals of simple graphs, and in this article, we study a completely new class of monomial ideals associated to simple graphs, namely the class of generalized edge ideals. We give a complete description of the primary components associated to the minimal associated primes of these ideals. Using this description, and assuming some conditions on the relative weights, we completely characterize the equality of ordinary and symbolic powers of generalized edge ideals. After that, we also characterize generalized edge ideals of the 3-cycle for which this equality holds.

Limit Behavior of the Rational Powers of Monomial Ideals

Abstract:We investigate the rational powers of ideals. We find that in the case of monomial ideals, the canonical indexing leads to a characterization of the rational powers yielding that symbolic powers of squarefree monomial ideals are indeed rational powers themselves. Using the connection with symbolic powers techniques, we use splittings to show the convergence of depths and normalized Castelnuovo-Mumford regularities. We show the convergence of Stanley depths for rational powers, and as a consequence of this we show the before-now unknown convergence of Stanley depths of integral closure powers. In addition, we show the finiteness of asymptotic associated primes, and we find that the normalized lengths of local cohomology modules converge for rational powers, and hence for symbolic powers of squarefree monomial ideals.

Symbolic powers: Simis and weighted monomial ideals

Abstract:The aim of this work is to compare symbolic and ordinary powers of monomial ideals using commutative algebra and combinatorics. Monomial ideals whose symbolic and ordinary powers coincide are called Simis ideals. Weighted monomial ideals are defined by assigning linear weights to monomials. We examine Simis and normally torsion-free ideals, relate some of the properties of monomial ideals and weighted monomial ideals, and present a structure theorem for edge ideals of $d$-uniform clutters whose ideal of covers is Simis in degree $d$. One of our main results is a combinatorial classification of when the dual of the edge ideal of a weighted oriented graph is Simis in degree $2$.

Abstract:Continuing a well established tradition of associating convex bodies to monomial ideals, we initiate a program to construct asymptotic Newton polyhedra from decompositions of monomial ideals. This is achieved by forming a graded family of ideals based on a given decomposition. We term these graded families powers since they generalize the notions of ordinary and symbolic powers. Asymptotic invariants for these graded families are expressed as solutions to linear optimization problems on the respective convex bodies. This allows to establish a lower bound on the Waldschmidt constant of a monomial ideal by means of a more easily computable invariant, which we introduce under the name of naive Waldschmidt constant.

The Structure of Symbolic Powers of Matroids

Abstract:We describe the structure of the symbolic powers $I^{(\ell)}$ of the Stanley-Reisner ideals, and cover ideals, $I$, of matroids. We (a) prove a structure theorem describing a minimal generating set for every $I^{(\ell)}$; (b) describe the (non--standard graded) symbolic Rees algebra $\mathcal{R}_s(I)$ of $I$ and show its minimal algebra generators have degree at most ht $I$; (c) provide an explicit, simple formula to compute the largest degree of a minimal algebra generator of $\mathcal{R}_s(I)$; (d) provide algebraic applications, including formulas for the symbolic defects of $I$, the initial degree of $I^{(\ell)}$, and the Waldschmidt constant of $I$; (e) provide a new algorithm allowing fast computations of very large symbolic powers of $I$. One of the by-products is a new characterization of matroids in terms of minimal generators of $I^{(\ell)}$ for some $\ell\geq 2$. In particular, it yields a new, simple characterization of matroids in terms of the minimal generators of $I^{(2)}$. This is the first characterization of matroids in terms of $I^{(2)}$, and it complements a celebrated theorem by Minh-Trung, Varbaro, and Terai-Trung which requires the investigation of homological properties of $I^{(\ell)}$ for some $\ell\geq 3$.

The Multiplicity of Powers of a Class of Non-Square-free Monomial Ideals

Abstract:Let $R = \mathbb{K}[x_1, \ldots, x_n]$ be a polynomial ring over a field $\mathbb{K}$, and let $I \subseteq R$ be a monomial ideal of height $h$. We provide a formula for the multiplicity of the powers of $I$ when all the primary ideals of height $h$ in the irredundant minimal primary decomposition of $I$ are irreducible. This is a generalization of \cite[Theorem 1.1]{TV}. Furthermore, we present a formula for the multiplicity of powers of special powers of monomial ideals that satisfy the aforementioned conditions. Here, the $m$-th special power of a monomial ideal refers to the ideal generated by the $m$-th powers of all its minimal generators. Finally, we explicitly provide a formula for the multiplicity of powers of special powers of edge ideals in vertex-weighted oriented graphs using combinatorial properties.

Abstract:Let $J$ be any ideal in a strongly $F$-regular, diagonally $F$-split ring $R$ essentially of finite type over an $F$-finite field. We show that $J^{s+t} \subseteq \tau(J^{s - \epsilon}) \tau(J^{t-\epsilon})$ for all $s, t, \epsilon > 0$ for which the formula makes sense. We use this to show a number of novel containments between symbolic and ordinary powers of prime ideals in this setting, which includes all determinantal rings and a large class of toric rings in positive characteristic. In particular, we show that $P^{(2hn)} \subseteq P^n$ for all prime ideals $P$ of height $h$ in such rings.

Abstract:This article investigates under which conditions the symbolic powers of the extension of an ideal is the same as the extension of the symbolic powers. Our result generalizes the known scenarios. As an application, we prove formulas for the resurgence of sum of two homogeneous ideals in finitely generated k-algebra domains, where k is algebraically closed. Initially, these were known for ideals in polynomial rings.

Abstract:Factoring ideals in integral domains is a central topic in multiplicative ideal theory. In the present paper we study monoids of ideals and consider factorizations of ideals into multiplicatively irreducible ideals. The focus is on the monoid of nonzero divisorial ideals and on the monoid of $v$-invertible divisorial ideals in weakly Krull Mori domains. Under suitable algebraic finiteness conditions we establish arithmetical finiteness results, in particular for the monotone catenary degree and for the structure of sets of lengths and of their unions.

On regularity and projective dimension of invariant chains of monomial ideals

Abstract:Ideals in infinite-dimensional polynomial rings that are invariant under the action of the monoid of increasing functions have been extensively studied recently. Of particular interest is the asymptotic behavior of truncations of such an ideal in finite-dimensional polynomial subrings. It has been conjectured that the Castelnuovo--Mumford regularity and projective dimension are eventual linear functions along such truncations. In the present paper we provide evidence for these conjectures. We show that for monomial ideals the projective dimension is eventually linear, while the regularity is asymptotically linear.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate when symbolic and ordinary powers of the parity binomial edge ideal of a graph fail to be equal. It turns out that if $\mathcal{I}_{G}$ is the parity binomial edge ideal of a graph $G$, then in each of the following cases the symbolic power $\mathcal{I}_{G}^{(t)}$ and the ordinary power $\mathcal{I}_{G}^t$ are not equal for some $t$: (i) the clique number of $G$ is greater than 3; (ii) $G$ has a net; or (iii) $G$ has a PT as an induced subgraph.

Abstract:We consider ideals in a polynomial ring generated by collections of power sum polynomials, and obtain conditions under which these define complete intersection rings, normal domains, and unique factorization domains. We also settle a key case of a conjecture of Conca, Krattenthaler, and Watanabe, and prove other results in that direction.

Abstract:Searching for structural reasons behind old results and conjectures of Chudnovksy regarding the least degree of a nonzero form in an ideal of fat points in projective N-space, we make conjectures which explain them, and we prove the conjectures in certain cases, including the case of general points in the projective plane. Our conjectures were also partly motivated by the Eisenbud-Mazur Conjecture on evolutions, which concerns symbolic squares of prime ideals in local rings, but in contrast we consider higher symbolic powers of homogeneous ideals in polynomial rings.

Abstract:Let $R=\mathbb{K}[x_1,\dots,x_n]$ and $\mathfrak{a}_1,\dots,\mathfrak{a}_m$ are homogeneous ideals satisfying certain properties, which includes a description of the Noetherian symbolic Rees algebra. Then, we compute the Waldschmidt constant and resurgence and show that it exhibits a stronger version of the Chudnovsky and Demailly-type bounds. We further show that these properties are satisfied for classical varieties such as the generic determinantal ideals, minors of generic symmetric matrices, generic extended Hankel matrices, and ideal of pfaffians of skew-symmetric matrices.

Abstract:In the present paper, we aim to classify monomial ideals whose all matching powers are Cohen-Macaulay. We especially focus our attention on edge ideals. The Cohen-Macaulayness of the last matching power of an edge ideal is characterized, providing an algebraic analogue of the famous Tutte theorem regarding graphs having a perfect matching. For chordal graphs, very well-covered graphs and Cameron-Walker graphs, we completely solve our problem.

In this survey, we study the defining ideals [math] of the space monomial curves [math] for primitive Pythagorean triples (PPT) [math]. We give a minimal system of generators of [math]. Hence, we provide the formula for Frobenius number of a PPT. Additionally, we show that over every field of arbitrary characteristic, there are distinct primitive Pythagorean triples such that their symbolic Rees algebras are noetherian.

Abstract:In this article we first compare the set of elements in the socle of an ideal of a polynomial algebra over a field K that are not in the ideal itself with Macaulay's inverse systems of such polynomial algebras in a purely combinatorial way for monomial ideals, and then develop some closure operational properties for the related poset . We then derive some algebraic propositions of -graded rings (a natural generalization of the usual -grading where is a monoid) that then have some combinatorial consequences. Interestingly, some of the results from this part that uniformly hold for polynomial rings are always false when the ring is local. We finally delve into some direct computations, in relation to a given term order of the monomials, for general zero-dimensional Gorenstein ideals, and we deduce a few explicit observations and results for the inverse systems from some recent results about socles.
