Abstract:Earnings Response Coefficient (ERC) reflects the market response to the company’s published earnings. It also reflects the quality of the company’s profits. This study aims to examine the factors affecting ERC in Jordan based on a sample of 17 Jordanian industrial companies listed on the Amman Stock Exchange during 2012–2018. The dependent variable of this study is the Earnings Response Coefficient (ERC). Five independent variables or factors were selected for testing their impact on the dependent variable, namely, leverage ratio, systemic risks, company’s size, company’s growth opportunity, and the company’s profitability. The results of panel data regression analysis showed that for companies with a higher leverage ratio, the market is less responsive to the change in their profits than those with a higher leverage ratio. Systematic risk has a negative and significant effect on ERC, which means that high systemic risks lead to a reduction in the ERC. The company’s size has no significant impact on ERC, indicating the irrelevance of the relationship between the size of Jordanian industrial companies and their profits. The company’s growth opportunity has a negative and significant impact on ERC, which means low market-to-book ratio and higher growth opportunities resulting in higher ERC. Finally, the company’s profitability measured by return on assets (ROA) has a positive and important impact on ERC, suggesting that higher profitability increases ERC. The study highlighted the importance of ERC and recommended that companies take the needed measures to increase their ERC. It also recommended raising investors’ awareness.

Abstract:Purpose -This paper discusses empirical research examining whether: 1) controlling owners’typeaffectscostofequitycapital(COEC)andrealearningsmanagement(REM), 2) REM affects COEC, and 3) REM mediates the effect of controlling owners’ type on COEC. Design/methodology/approach–The research uses a sample of 132 publicly listed companiesontheIndonesianStockExchangeforthefiscalyearthatendsonDecember 31intheyearof2011,2012,and2013andthetotalobservationconsistof396firm-years. Cost of equity capital is estimated by using Ohlson Model, Real earnings management as mediating variable is measured by Roychowdhury model. Three models are used to calculate real activity manipulation based on operating activity, production cost, and discretionaryexpenditures.Controlvariablesconsistofcorporategovernancepractices measured by corporate governance indices, ownership concentrated level measured by ownership ratio, firm’s size measured by log total assets, and discretionary accruals measures by Modified Jones Model. Data used in this study is obtained from ICMD, Indonesian Stock Exchange database, and company annual reports. Findings -This research finds evidence that the ownership type affects cost of equity capital, and RCFO except private ownership. With exception for GOV, ownership type affectsproductioncosts-basedrealearningsmanagement(RPE)butallownershiptypes affect discretionary expenditures-based real earnings management (RDE). Moreover, RCFO, RPE, and RDE affect cost of equity capital. Finally, this research reports that RCFO mediates the effect of each ownership type on cost of equity except for private ownership (PRIV), RPE mediates the effect of each ownership type on cost of equity capital except for private ownership(PRIV)and government ownership(GOV)andRDE mediates the effect of each ownership type on cost of equity capital. Originality/value - This study provides further evidence on the effect of controlling ownership on COEC and REM, the effects of REM on COEC, and evidence that REM mediates the effect of controlling owners’ type on COEC.

Abstract:Earnings management (EM) firms produce less predictable accounting earnings that do not reflect the company's genuine financial success. However, EM is regarded as one of the most significant issues regarding financial reporting, especially in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. Nevertheless, this paper aims to investigate the effect of corporate governance mechanisms on earnings management in Malaysian manufacturing companies (MMCs). Data was collected from 2010 to 2019 for MMCs. By highlighting the updating of corporate governance rules, the market value and competitiveness of institutions will improve. Moreover, this paper provides evidence of the effect of corporate governance on earnings management. Therefore, the results may help policymakers to take a new approach to the development of corporate governance instructions, and stakeholders, which would enhance earnings quality and improve the quality of financial reports. This could help them build a more comprehensive picture of the firm and improve the decision-making process.

Abstract:This study aims to examine the effect of each variable liquidity ratio, leverage ratio, profitability ratio, growth opportunities, firm size, and profit growth on the earning response coefficient with ownership as a moderating variable. The research method used in this study is quantitative and serves as a verification descriptive study. The population in this study is the food and beverage sub-sector manufacturing companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange in 2016-2020. The sampling technique used the purposive sampling method to obtain 18 food and beverage companies that match the criteria. The data analysis technique was carried out by panel data regression analysis using fixed effects, and the hypothesis was tested using the t-test. The results show that the liquidity ratio, growth opportunities, firm size, and profit growth partially have a negative and insignificant effect on the earnings response coefficient. The ratio of leverage and profitability partially and significantly affects the earnings response coefficient. Furthermore, the study results show that institutional ownership can moderate the relationship between liquidity ratios, leverage ratios, profitability ratios, growth opportunities, firm size, and profit growth to the earning response coefficient.

Abstract:Ownership structure,especially the existence of controlling shareholders in many companies is one of the important causes of the low earnings quality in China now.From this point of view,we adjust the basic ERC model by adding variables related with controlling shareholders.With the data during 1999～2002 of China's listed companies,we find that earnings quality is significantly negatively associated with holding ratio of controlling shareholders,state -owned controlling shareholdings result significantly lower earnings quality,earnings quality is getting better when other shareholdings grow bigger.

Abstract:This study examines whether the earnings response coefficient (ERC) is conditional on the transparency of corporate governance (CG) in emerging markets. Using 81 of the top 100 Chinese firms that are listed either in mainland China or in Hong Kong, we find that the level of governance transparency positively interacts with ERC. This finding is generally robust to controls for various firm specifications (size, assets growth, leverage, E/P ratio) and institutional factors (listing place, issuing status, and economic sector). The predicted model is tenable even if we change earnings metrics and window settings. Our refined analysis using five subcategories of governance scores indicates that the interaction of governance transparency on ERC is mostly contributed by information disclosure on shareholders and related parties, two types of governance information that concern investors. The alternative test using governance structural variables further shows that the relation of ERC is not significantly conditional on the CG structure.

Abstract:This study aims to examine the effect of default risk, accounting conservatism, earnings persistence and audit quality on earnings response coefficient (ERC). The population in this study are non-financial companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) for 2019-2021 with a total of 673 companies. Sampling in this study used purposive sampling and obtained as many as 118 companies with 354 observational data. This research is a quantitative research with secondary data sources including the company's annual financial reports obtained through the websitewww.idx.co.idand stock prices obtained through the sitehttp://finance.yahoo.com. Data collection techniques in this study are the method of documentation and literature study.Data analysis in this study used panel data regression using EViews 12 software. The results showed that default risk had no significant effect on earnings response coefficient (ERC), accounting conservatism and earnings persistence had no significant positive effect on earnings response coefficient (ERC). And audit quality has a negative and significant effect on earnings response coefficient (ERC).

Abstract:For decades, corporate social responsibility (CSR) has been an area at the heart of business research. The aspects of CSR that researchers have been focusing on have grown exponentially. Most research efforts have dwelled on its positive effects, including good behavioural changes, promising financial performance, social investment and development, and environmental preservation and protection. On the other hand, several scholars have questioned the credibility of CSR and its link to unethical financial conduct, particularly earnings management. This review paper uses a systematic literature review to conduct bibliometric analysis, content analysis, and thematic analysis in order to identify trends and outcomes of CSR reporting and earnings management research. The literature review search is guided by PRISMA and analyses 152 Scopus-indexed articles between 2005 and 2021. As a result, this paper reveals the most influential authors and articles, leading journals and countries, and research cluster networks. This review also outlines the theoretical perspectives and future direction of CSR and earnings management research. In addition, this review paper provides critical and beneficial insights for stakeholders and researchers.

Abstract:Either corporate social responsibility (CSR) is paramount for the firms or not, is a matter of question since long. The present study analyzes this relationship in the context of moderating role of Institutional ownership (IO). Firm performance is measured through accounting and market value measures. Leverage, firm age, firm size, and log of sales revenue used as a control variables. Through applying panel data techniques, findings demonstrate insignificant positive association between CSR and firm performance. It shows that stakeholder could not assign value to firms spending as a CSR. This could be the reason that customers are not much aware about firms CSR activities hence, firms fail to capitalize their spending as an investment. Institutional Ownership (IO) reveals negative insignificant association with all profitability measures except Tobin’s Q where this relationship is significant. This significant negative relationship supports the agency theory and presence of strategic alliance hypotheses between influential institutional owners and internal management that leads to lower firm performance. The interaction variable of CSR and IO show positive but insignificant relationship with firm performance by all means.

Abstract:Corporate social responsibility in the banking industry has an impact on the environment and society. Research was conducted on the impacts of environmental social responsibility disclosure on future income response coefficients of The Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) Banking to determine the level of concern ASEAN banks have in disclosing corporate responsibility, and to understand the levels of future revenue response coefficients. The variable in this research was measured by corporate social responsibility disclosure, while the variable of the Future Earnings Response Coefficient (FERC) was based on the value of banking stocks. Other variables—size, growth, earning persistence, and earnings volatility—were the control variables. The sampling method used was a purposive sampling approach; a research sample of 280 banks in 5 ASEAN countries was determined with this provision: banking report data were taken from the stock exchanges of each country and sustainability reports, using the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) standard version 4 (G4) from 2014 to 2018. The researchers used conducted multiple regression analysis to examine the variables. The analysis tools used included panel data, so that data processing was carried out using review software. The results of the study show that corporate social responsibility disclosure has a positive and significant effect on the future earnings response coefficient, whereas other variables (i.e., company size, growth, and earnings persistence), do not have a relationship with the disclosure of corporate responsibility or FERC. Only the volatility of earnings has an influence on disclosure of corporate social responsibility and FERC.

Family ownership concentration and real earnings management: Empirical evidence from an emerging market

Abstract:<span>The paper examines the effect of family ownership concentration (FMOC) on real earnings management (REM) in manufacturing firms listed on Bursa Malaysia (formerly known as Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange). Data are gathered from 1,056 firm-year observations for the four-year period from 2013 to 2016. The feasible generalised least square estimation is used to examine the relationships. The results show that FMOC is negatively and significantly associated with REM. This evidence supports the alignment hypothesis that FMOC mitigates managerial earnings management by preventing real activities manipulation. However, the finding of the current study is contrary to the claim that family-controlled firms have lower earnings quality. This study extends previous empirical research by examining the effect of different levels of family control on REM in an emerging market and provides evidence that family firms have less incentive to engage in REM practices. The findings imply that earnings reported in the financial statements of Malaysian manufacturing family firms are more reliable as these firms do not manipulate earnings through real business activities. Policymakers may consider the results of the current study that show family-controlled firms have the motivation to self-monitor their business and avoid earnings manipulation activities. Investors may benefit from this evidence and invest in family firms. Future studies may extend the sample to cover other sectors to check the consistency of the findings. In addition, the paper uses data from Malaysia, a country characterised as a family-controlled market. Thus, the findings may not be similar to those of countries with lower FMOC.</span>
Corporate Social Responsibility and Firm Performance in GCC Countries: A Panel Smooth Transition Regression Model

Abstract:There is evidence for mixed effects of corporate social responsibility (CSR) on corporate financial performance. In particular, evidence is reported to be positive, negative, and insignificant. These controversies are generally explained by two opposing schools of thought, which are the social impact hypothesis and the shift of focus hypothesis. This paper attempts to contribute to the ongoing debate by investigating whether the relationship between CSR and firm financial results is nonlinear. Therefore, this research relies on a panel smooth transition regression (PSTR) model in order to calculate the value transition threshold of CSR in 70 Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) firms from 2015 to 2020, using the CSR composite index and various CSR dimensions, which include environmental, social, and governance transition dimensions. Empirical findings indicate that investment in CSR does not help to boost corporate value until it exceeds the value transition threshold. However, when the marginal benefit exceeds the cost, CSR investment becomes a positive contributor to corporate performance. Furthermore, results indicate that the nonlinear relationship persists when using the individual CSR dimensions, i.e., governmental, social, and environmental CSR measurements. Finally, an interesting finding shows that the social CSR dimension is associated with the highest threshold level. Hence, firms should invest more in the social aspects of CSR in order to see their profitability increase.

Identification and Ranking of Financial, Non-Financial, and Behavioral Components Influencing Earnings Response Coefficient in the Iranian Capital Market (Data Mining Approach)

Abstract:Objective: The relationship between accounting profit and investor reactions, as well as stock price changes, is measured using the Earnings Response Coefficient (ERC). Previous research indicates a variation in ERC between companies and over time, which is attributed to specific company factors and characteristics. The aim of this study is to identify and rank the financial, non-financial, and behavioral components affecting companies' ERC. Methodology: Using data from 153 companies listed on the Tehran Stock Exchange over the period 2013 to 2022, and employing data mining techniques and two methods: stepwise forward regression and regression decision tree, the influential components on ERC were identified and ranked. Findings: The results of the stepwise forward regression method indicated that the components of auditor's opinion type, earnings per share (EPS), stock liquidity, growth opportunities, earnings stability, inflation rate, sales growth, operating profit ratio, relative strength index per share, and market index return respectively influence ERC. The regression decision tree method results also showed that the components of earnings stability, stock liquidity, EPS, stock price synchronicity, stock trading imbalance, adjusted trading volume, psychological line index, relative strength index per share, earnings conservatism, and financial statement restatements respectively influence ERC. The Wilcoxon test results also showed that the ranking of components influencing ERC is not the same in the two methods. Additionally, comparing the mean absolute error of the two methods indicated that the regression decision tree method identifies and ranks the influential components on ERC more accurately. Conclusion: The results of both methods confirm the high impact of EPS, stock liquidity, earnings stability, and relative strength index per share on the ERC of companies.

Abstract:This study aimed to examine the relationship between corporate governance effectiveness and financial reporting quality among family and non-family owned companies in the Sultanate of Oman. This study used a panel dataset for 68 companies listed on the Muscat Securities Market for 6 years from 2013 to 2018. The study contributes to the literature by extending previous financial reporting quality with a consideration of the Sultanate of Oman business environment where family ownership control is more common. Additionally, this study contributes by using a composite measure of corporate governance mechanisms to capture the combined effect of corporate governance effectiveness on the propensity of financial reporting quality, based on the agency's theoretical framework. This study is based on the difference between family and non-family owned firms with Type I and Type II agency problems, with differences in ownership and control. This study contributes to the literature by examining the influences of corporate governance effectiveness on financial reporting quality, which is expected to be different between family and non-family firms. The empirical results indicate that the association between corporate governance effectiveness and its financial reporting quality is positive and significant for both, the full sample as well as the non-family firms. However, this relationship appears to be weaker for family owned firms.

OWNERSHIP CONCENTRATION AND FIRM PERFORMANCE IN EMERGING MARKETS: A META‐ANALYSIS

Abstract:The literature concerned with relations between ownership concentration and corporate performance in emerging markets presents conflicting theoretical predications and inconclusive empirical results. We use meta-analytical techniques to integrate the diverse empirical findings and investigate factors contribute to the inconsistencies in the empirical evidence. Using 419 correlations collected from 42 primary studies of listed corporations in 18 emerging markets, heterogeneity tests show that only a small proportion of the variation in reported ownership concentration-performance relations can be attributed to sampling error. Our meta-regressions reveal how population differences, researchers' modeling choices, and inadequate treatment of endogeneity explain a large portion of the true heterogeneity. After adjusting for these effects, we find ownership concentration has negative relation with firm performance across countries. Our results emphasize the importance of model specification and methods of addressing endogeneity, and support further comparative study of the ownership concentration-corporate performance relation between countries with seemingly similar corporate governance environments.

Abstract:There is a dearth of longitudinal studies of corporate social responsibility expenditure (CSRE) and corporate governance in Bangladesh, which has been the impetus for this study. The study aims to identify the relationship between ownership structure and CSR expenditure. The empirical study considered a longitudinal period of 2007–2019 of listed financial firms (banks and non-banking financial institutions) of Bangladesh. The final sample consisted of 461 firm-year observations for 53 firms. The study incorporated a set of theories, including agency cost theory and stakeholder theory. The study applied the ordinary least square (OLS) regression technique to test hypotheses. The results of multiple regression analysis showed that foreign ownership and managerial ownership contribute positively and significantly to CSRE. However, the study did not document any relationship between institutional ownership and CSRE. The study used rigorous and alternative measurement techniques to further verify the findings. It was concluded that value creation from CSRE is highly dependent on the ownership structure of financial firms. The empirical study has significant theoretical and managerial implications. Abstract:The set of rules, laws, and procedures that lead and regulate a firm is known as corporate governance (Alqaraleh et al., 2022). The primary objective of this study was to investigate the effect of the corporate governance index on the cost of equity for businesses listed on the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Stock Exchange. This study gathers data from yearly reports from 2015 to 2021 in order to test hypotheses using multiple linear regression models to analyze the gathered data. The independent variable of the corporate governance index in our research consists of eight distinct corporate governance characteristics. According to the findings of our investigation, there is a negative correlation between corporate governance and equity capital cost. This indicates that the quality of corporate governance may lower the cost of capital. In order to improve the quality of financial reporting, we advocate implementing a robust corporate governance framework and reducing information asymmetry, i.e., increasing transparency and agency conflict, therefore, attracting financial investors and suppliers, enhancing the capital market, and absorbing the organization’s required financial resources at a reduced rate. The study results suggest that corporations might minimize the cost of equity by creating excellent corporate governance. In the cost of equality, the result of the study emphasizes the significance and efficacy of corporate governance.
Corporate social responsibility and dividend payments in the Malaysian capital market: the interacting effect of family-controlled companies

Abstract:This study investigates the influence of corporate social responsibility (CSR) on dividend payments using a sample of 263 Malaysian companies that participated in the Capital Market Development Fund–Bursa Research Scheme over the period 2008–2013. The study applies the pooled ordinary least squares, quantile, Tobit, Heckman's self-selection model and propensity score matching regression techniques. The results from these techniques show that CSR is significantly and positively associated with dividend payments, meaning that the higher the CSR, the greater the amount of dividends paid to shareholders. However, when the interacting effect of family control is considered on the association between CSR and dividend payments, family control has a significantly negative influence on the relationship, indicating that family companies engage in less CSR, thereby negatively affecting dividend payments. Overall, the findings support the view that serving the interest of stakeholders paves the ways for satisfying shareholders' claims, and reveals the reality of family companies' behaviour to shareholders and stakeholders. Thus, this study adds to the literature on the dividend conundrum and the role CSR plays in shareholders' prosperity' it is the first attempt to establish the direct effect of CSR on dividend payments in the Malaysian capital market and study the interacting effect of family control.

The results of the 33 studies indicate that the majority of the research relies on the CSR-earnings management link, on the US-American capital market and on CSR performance measures. Most of these studies indicate that CSR relates to decreased earnings management in line with the stewardship theory. However, also other results exist on the CSR earnings management link. Research on the earnings management-CSR relationship is of low validity so far in view of the low amount. Comparability of recent research on that topic is in particular limited in view of the heterogeneous CSR and earnings management variables and the endogeneity concerns. Future research is encouraged to address endogeneity tests, include country-specific effects and increase the validity of CSR and earnings management variables. As CSR performance and reporting can have a major impact on earnings quality, the author recommends firms to search for opportunities to make their CSR activities more comprehensive by expanding their CSR reporting and thus providing deeper insights on their CSR performance in line with stakeholders’ interests. The paper is the first literature review on the CSR-earnings management and earnings management-CSR relationship so far. The author explains the main CSR and earnings management variables that have been included in prior empirical research, stresses the limitations of the studies and gives useful recommendations for future research, practice and regulators

An Empirical Research on Correlation of Earnings Management and Ownership Structure of Chinese Listed Companies

Abstract:On the basis of recollecting a good many of researches of earnings management home and abroad, this paper uses an empirical research method to study the relationship between earnings management and ownership structure of shares of 460 companies listed in Shenzhen and Shanghai Stock Exchange of China in 2004 and 2005. The results show that ownership concentration ratio of shares has double effect on earnings management; the shareholding percentage of managers is negatively related to earnings management; while state-owned shares, legal person shares and trading shares have no significant effects on earnings management. The research of relationship between earnings management and ownership structure provides a kind of method for Securities Regulatory Commission of China to supervise and distinguish from earnings management behaviors.
