Abstract:The recent LHCb determination of the direct CP asymmetries in the decays $D^0 \to K^+ K^-, \pi^+ \pi^-$ hints at a sizeable breaking of two approximate symmetries of the SM: CP and U-spin. We aim at explaining the data with BSM physics and use the framework of flavorful $Z^\prime$ models. Interestingly, experimental and theoretical constraints very much narrow down the shape of viable models: Viable, anomaly-free models are electron- and muon-phobic and feature a light $Z^\prime$ of 10-20 GeV coupling only to right-handed fermions. The $Z^\prime$ can be searched for in low mass dijets or at the LHC as well as dark photon searches. A light $Z^\prime$ of $\sim$ 3 GeV or $\sim$ 5-7 GeV can moreover resolve the longstanding discrepancy in the $J/\psi, \psi^\prime$ branching ratios with pion form factors from fits to $e^+ e^- \to \pi^+ \pi^-$ data, and simultaneously explain the charm CP asymmetries. Smoking gun signatures for this scenario are $\Upsilon$ and charmonium decays into pions, taus or invisbles.

Anomalies, $η$ , $η$' as keys to glueballs

Abstract:Glueballs are the most straightforward prediction of QCD, yet while they have likely been produced, none has been unequivocally identified. We pursue a backdoor approach through anomalies, and singularly the $\eta$ and $\eta$' which brings light to this irritating situation. In particular, we advocate to consider the full decay chain $J/\psi \rightarrow X \gamma , X \rightarrow \eta \eta'$ (into glue-rich states followed by glue-rich decays). We also suggest new BES III searches, namely for the $\pi_1$ into $\eta(') \pi^0$, (this would be the partner of their recently observed $\eta_1(1855)$). Another useful investigation would be for other channels (or semi-inclusive) $f_0 (1500)$ decays (see last section)

The persistent nonperturbative charm enigma

Abstract:The question of the existence and possible magnitude of nonperturbative (often called "intrinsic") charm in the proton has long confounded attempts to cleanly isolate such a contribution in global analyses of high-energy experiments. In this letter, we show that the available (non)perturbative QCD theory and hadronic data have still not developed to a sufficient level to clearly resolve this problem. We highlight a number of challenging aspects that must be confronted in extracting nonperturbative charm in PDF fits, and in so doing, present an updated next-to-next-to-leading order CT analysis of fitted charm, CT18 FC, which we also compare to recent studies. We outline the theory developments and future data needed to make progress on this subject.

Abstract:Strange and charmed baryon productions from proton-antiproton collisions are studied in the effective Lagrangian and Regge approaches. We include only the $t$-channel dynamics which is dominant for the diffractive region that is relevant in the present discussions. For strangeness productions, the coupling constants for $K$ meson are determined by $SU(3)$ relations while other unknown parameters for $K^{*}$ couplings and for form factors are fixed by existing observed data for strangeness productions. By extrapolating the amplitudes for strangeness productions to those for charm, we predict charm production cross sections. It turns out that the total cross sections are $10^{4}$ to $10^{5}$ smaller than those of strangeness productions, depending on the final states. By using the known total cross sections for strangeness, $\sim 10^{2} \mu b$ for $\Lambda \bar{\Lambda}$ and, $\sim 10^{1} \mu b$ for $\Sigma \bar{\Lambda}$ the total cross sections for charm productions are predicted to be $\sim 10^{-2} \mu b$ for $\Lambda_{c} \bar{\Lambda}_c$, $\sim 10^{-3} \mu b$ for $\Sigma_{c} \bar{\Lambda}_c$, and $\sim 10^{-4} \mu b$ for $\Sigma_{c} \bar{\Sigma}_c$. Our results can be tested in the future experiments at $\bar{\text{P}}$ANDA.

Abstract:We discuss aspects of open and hidden charm production in deuterium-nucleus collisions at RHIC and LHC energies. We describe calculations of the total $c \bar c$ cross section and the charm quark transverse momentum distributions. We next explain how shadowing and moderate nuclear absorption can explain the PHENIX $J/\psi$ dAu/$pp$ ratios and predict the combined effect of shadowing and absorption in 6.2 TeV d+Pb collisions.

Abstract:We explore the inclusive hadroproduction of the $ D_{s0}^{*}\left( {2317} \right) $, D s1(2460) and D sJ (2860) states at the Large Hadron Collider under the assumption that these hadrons are S-wave meson-meson molecules. In addition, the D s2(2910), a predicted bound state of the D 2(2460)K system, is also discussed. We first derive a factorisation formula for the production rates based on effective field theory. Then we make use of two MC event generators, Herwig and Pythia, to simulate the production of pairs of charmed mesons and kaons. Using effective field theory to handle the final state interaction among the meson pairs, we give an estimate of the inclusive production rates for these particles at the order-of-magnitude accuracy. Our results show that the cross sections for the $ pp\to D_{s0}^{*}\left( {2317} \right) $ and pp → D s1(2460) at the LHC are at $ \mathcal{O}\left( {1\mu \mathrm{b}} \right) $ level, while the ones for the pp → D sJ (2860) and the pp → D s2(2910) are smaller by about one order of magnitude. Such estimates suggest that these four exotic states could be copiously produced at the LHC. A study of these states at the LHC will thus provide valuable information on hadron spectroscopy as well as hadron interactions.

Abstract:The production of doubly strange hyperon Ξ− and trebly strange hyperon Ω− in relativistic Au+Au collisions at sNN=4.2 GeV is explored based on a relativistic transport model that is interweaved with hadronic mean-field potentials for heavy-ion collisions. Upon comparison, it appears that relative to the double-strangeness observable Ξ− , the yield and collective flows of the triple-strange Ω− exhibit a higher sensitivity to the equation of state of dense matter. Abstract:Open charm production in proton-proton collisions represents an important tool to investigate some of the most fundamental aspects of Quantum Chromodynamics, from the partonic mechanisms of heavy-quark production to the process of heavy-quark hadronisation. Over the last decade, the measurement of the production cross sections of charm mesons and baryons in proton-proton (pp) collisions was at the centre of a wide experimental effort at the Large Hadron Collider. Thanks to the complementarity of the different experiments, the production of charm hadrons was measured over a wide transverse momentum region and in different rapidity ranges. In this paper, the measurements of the charm hadrons $D^0$, $D^*$, $D^+$, $D_s^+$, $\Lambda_c^+$ and $\Xi_c^0$ performed by the ALICE, CMS and LHCb collaborations in pp collisions at the centre-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}=\rm 5.02~TeV$ are combined to determine the total charm-quark production cross section $\sigma_{c\overline{c}}$ in a novel data-driven approach. The resulting total $c\overline{c}$ cross section is \begin{equation*} \begin{aligned} \sigma_\mathrm{c\overline{c}} (\mathrm{pp},5.02\,\mathrm{TeV}) ={} & 8340.9 \pm 217.8\mathrm{ (stat.) } {}^{+367.1}_{-367.2} \mathrm{ (syst.) } {}^{+362.5}_{-457.5} \mathrm{ (extr.) } + 679.9 (\Omega_\mathrm{c})~\mu\mathrm{b}. \end{aligned} \end{equation*} The measured charm-hadron distributions and corresponding cross sections are compared with the most recent theoretical calculations.

Constraints on charm-anticharm asymmetry in the nucleon from lattice QCD

Abstract:We present the first lattice QCD calculation of the charm quark contribution to the nucleon electromagnetic form factors <math>GE,Mc(Q2)</math> in the momentum transfer range <math>0≤Q2≤1.4</math> <math>GeV2</math>. The quark mass dependence, finite lattice spacing and volume corrections are taken into account simultaneously based on the calculation on three gauge ensembles including one at the physical pion mass. The nonzero value of the charm magnetic moment <math>μMc=−0.00127(38)stat(5)sys</math>, as well as the Pauli form factor, reflects a nontrivial role of the charm sea in the nucleon spin structure. The nonzero <math>GEc(Q2)</math> indicates the existence of a nonvanishing asymmetric charm-anticharm sea in the nucleon. Performing a nonperturbative analysis based on holographic QCD and the generalized Veneziano model, we study the constraints on the <math>[c(x)−c¯(x)]</math> distribution from the lattice QCD results presented here. Our results provide complementary information and motivation for more detailed studies of physical observables that are sensitive to intrinsic charm and for future global analyses of parton distributions including asymmetric charm-anticharm distribution.

Abstract:The invariant yield of electrons from open-heavy-flavor decays for $1<p_T<8$ GeV/$c$ at midrapidity $|y|<0.35$ in Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}$ = 200 GeV has been measured by the PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. A displaced-vertex analysis with the PHENIX silicon-vertex detector enables extraction of the fraction of charm and bottom hadron decays and unfolding of the invariant yield of parent charm and bottom hadrons. The nuclear-modification factors $R_{AA}$ for electrons from charm and bottom hadron decays and heavy-flavor hadrons show both a centrality and a quark-mass dependence, indicating suppression in the quark-gluon plasma produced in these collisions that is medium sized and quark-mass dependent.

Abstract:The X(6900) resonance, originally discovered by the LHCb Collaboration and later confirmed by both the ATLAS and CMS experiments, has sparked broad interest in the fully charmed tetraquark states. Relative to the mass spectra and decay properties of fully heavy tetraquarks, our knowledge on their production mechanism is still rather limited. In this work, we investigate the inclusive production of fully charmed S -wave tetraquarks at the LHC within the nonrelativistic QCD factorization framework. The partonic cross sections are computed at lowest order in αs and velocity, while the long-distance nonrelativistic QCD matrix elements are estimated from phenomenological potential models. Emergence of New Systematics for Open Charm Production in High Energy Collisions

Abstract:We present the production systematics of open charm hadron yields in high-energy collisions and their description based on the Statistical Hadronization Model. The rapidity density of $D^0, D^+, D^{*+}, D_s^+$ mesons and $\Lambda_c^+$ baryons in heavy ion and proton-proton collisions is analyzed for different collision energies and centralities. The Statistical Hadronization Model is extended to open charm production in minimum-bias and high-multiplicity pp collisions. In this context, we use the link established in [1], see also the further development in [2], between the rapidity density of open charm hadron yields, $dN_i/dy$, and the rapidity density of charm-anticharm quark pairs, $dN_{c\bar c}/d\eta$ to demonstrate that, in pp, pA and AA collisions, $dN_i/dy$ scales in leading order with $dN_{c\bar c}/d\eta$ and the slope coefficient is quantified by the appropriate thermal density ratio calculated at the chiral crossover temperature, $T_c=156.5$ MeV. It is also shown that, in high energy collisions and within uncertainties, $dN_i/dy$ exhibits the power-law scaling with the charged-particle pseudo-rapidity density. Furthermore, presently available data on different ratios of open charm rapidity densities in high-energy collisions are independent of collision energy and system size, as expected in the Statistical Hadronization Model.

Inclusive production of fully-charmed tetraquarks at LHC

Abstract:Background: Intrinsic charm, nonperturbative charm in the hadron wavefunction, has long been speculated but has never been satisfactorily proven. Open charm and $J/\psi$ measurements in a fixed-taget configuration at the LHCb searched for this contribution but reported no evidence. Purpose: $\overline D$ meson and $J/\psi$ production is calculated for the SMOG fixed-target configuration in the LHCb experiment using a combination of perturbative QCD and intrinsic charm to see whether intrinsic chaarm would indeed be observable in the SMOG kinematics. Methods: Open charm and $J/\psi$ production is calculated to next-to-leading order in perturbative QCD. Because a gas jet nuclear target is used, cold nuclear matter effects are included in the perturbative calculations. The intrinsic charm is calculated assuming production from a $|uud c \overline c \rangle$ Fock state. Results: The differential rapidity and transverse momentum distributions in $p+{\rm Ne}$, $p+{\rm He}$ and $p+{\rm Ar}$ fixed-target interactions are calculated in the SMOG acceptance and compared to data. The predicted asymmetries between $\overline D$ (leading charm) and $D$ (nonleading charm) are also shown. Conclusions: The contribution from intrinisic charm is small and decreases with center of mass energy. The calculations agree well with the current SMOG data, with or without intrinsic charm.

Hadroproduction of Charm and Beauty

Abstract:Recent results on the hadroproduction of charm and beauty are discussed in the context of the current theoretical and experimental status. The areas covered include production of open charm and beauty particles and charm and beauty quarkonia. Experimental results from both fixed target and colliding beam experiments are presented and compared to theoretical predictions. Predictions based on QCD perturbation theory are generally successful in explaining the shapes of differential cross sections but underestimate the scale of the cross section by factors of 2-3. An exception is production of the vector meson quarkonia which cannot be satisfactorily explained by perturbative processes alone.

Abstract:We propose a model with heterogeneous interacting traders which can explain some of the stylized facts of stock market returns. In the model synchronization effects, which generate large fluctuations in returns, can arise either from an aggregate exogenous shock or, even in its absence, purely from communication and imitation among traders. A trade friction is introduced which, by responding to price movements, creates a feedback mechanism on future trading and generates volatility clustering.

Medium-Assisted Enhancement of $X(3872)$ Production from Small to Large Colliding Systems

Abstract:Studies of exotic hadrons such as the $\chi_{c1} (3872)$ state provide crucial insights into the fundamental force governing the strong interaction dynamics, with an emerging new frontier to investigate their production in high energy collisions where a partonic medium is present. Latest experimental measurements from the Large Hadron Collider show an intriguing evolution pattern of the $\chi_{c1} (3872)$-to-$\psi(2S)$ yield ratio from proton-proton collisions with increasing multiplicities toward proton-lead and lead-lead collisions. Here we propose a novel mechanism of medium-assisted enhancement for the $\chi_{c1} (3872)$ production, which competes with the more conventional absorption-induced suppression and results in a non-monotonic trend from small to large colliding systems. Realistic simulations from this model offer the first quantitative description of all available data. Predictions are made for the centrality dependence of this observable in PbPb collisions as well as for its system size dependence from OO and ArAr to XeXe and PbPb collisions. In both cases, a non-monotonic behavior emerges as the imprint of the competition between enhancement and suppression and can be readily tested by future data.

Consistent Treatment of Charm Evolution in Deep Inelastic Scattering

Abstract:We present a formulation which allows heavy quark (c, b, ...) mass effects to be explicitly incorporated in both the coefficient functions and the splitting functions in the parton evolution equations. We obtain a consistent procedure for evolution through the threshold regions for c anti-c and b anti-b production in deep inelastic scattering, which allows the prediction of the charm and bottom quark densities. We use the new formulation to perform a next-to-leading order global parton analysis of deep inelastic and related hard scattering data. We find that the optimum fit has alpha_S(M_Z^2) = 0.118. We give predictions for the charm components of the proton structure functions F_2 and F_L as functions of x and Q^2 and, in particular, find that F_2^c is in good agreement with the existing measurements. We examine the Q^2 range of validity of the photon-gluon fusion model for c anti-c electroproduction. We emphasize the value of a precision measurement of the charm component F_2^c at HERA.

Productions of X(1835) As Baryonium with Sizable Gluon Content

Abstract:. X (1835) has been treated as a baryonium with sizable gluon content, and to be almost flavor singlet. This picture allows us to rationally understand X (1835) production in J /ψ radiative decays, and its large couplings with p ¯, η ′ ππ. The processes ϒ(1 S ) → γ X (1835) and J /ψ → ω X (1835) have been examined. It has been found that Br (ϒ(1 S ) → γ X (1835)) Br ( X (1835) → p ¯) < 6.45×10 -7 , which is compatible with CLEO's recent experimental result (Phys. Rev. D 73 , 032001 (2006) hep-ex/0510015). The branching fractions Br ( J /ψ → ω X (1835)), Br ( J /ψ → ρ X (1835)) with X (1835) → p ¯ and X (1835) → η ′ π + π - have been estimated by the quark-pair creation model. We show that they are heavily suppressed, so the signal of X (1835) is very difficult, if not impossible, to be observed in these processes. The experimental checks for these estimations are expected. The existence of the baryonium nonet is conjectured, and a model-independent derivation of their production branching fractions is presented.
