Abstract:In addition to the treatments and lifesaving measures given to our children in the NICU, both received therapies and saw specialists after their discharge from the hospital. After Lily was discharged from the NICU, she was extremely delayed with her ability to walk and talk. Early Intervention and our Pediatrician recommended outpatient therapy to support her growth. After receiving her speech and physical therapy, Lily walked at 21 months and started talking at 24 months. Long term until age 6, Lily continued to receive speech therapy through the local Intermediate Unit and had an IEP in school. Additionally, Lily struggled with gastrointestinal issues and failure to thrive, had surgery, and saw specialists at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia at age 5. After Aidan was discharged, Aidan saw specialists at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia for pulmonary and gastroenterology issues. Unfortunately, Aidan contracted RSV at 4 months old and spent a week back in the PICU on oxygen. RSV in addition to his prematurity affected his lungs and Aidan struggles with asthma to this day. He also developed a milk allergy and was on an expensive, special formula for his first year of life. Aidan was delayed walking and talking as well. He went through Early Intervention for occupational, physical, and speech therapy like Lily and finally talked at 18 months old and walked at 21 months old.
