Abstract:In today's technology-driven world, the demand for additive manufacturing is grabbing global attention. Additive manufacturing (AM), a well-known method of building 3-D objects through the layer-by-layer addition of materials, has replaced many traditional methods and shown the immense scope of application in various industries. Among various AM processes, cold metal transfer (CMT)-based wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) is one of the favoured methods employed to fabricate large and complex products since it exhibits characteristics like high deposition rate, less production time, lower current as well as manufacturing cost. This review aims to fill the gap existing in the works of literature that are dedicated to the various process parameters influencing the CMT-WAAM to build components. This study put a specific emphasis on crucial factors such as modes of CMT, heat input, torch angle, dwell time, depositional strategy, powder addition, and shielding gas that have an influential impact on the microstructural evolution, geometrical accuracy or mechanical properties of the part fabricated via CMT-WAAM. Furthermore, this paper also examines the different challenges and defects encountered during and after fabrication, along with providing valuable insights. This is followed by a thorough discussion of quality improvement techniques designed to enhance component properties, which is also included. Lastly, a concluding section summarizes all the major findings and outlines potential avenues for future research, intending to foster continued exploration and advancement in the field of CMT-WAAM.
