Abstract:The Black Woodpecker (Dryocopus martius L.) is both an ecosystem engineer and an umbrella species: it has the capacity to modify its environment through cavity excavation, which in turn favors a large range of species that depend on cavities but are unable to dig them themselves (secondary cavity nesters). However, the factors driving cavity excavation by the Black woodpecker at the tree scale remain poorly known. We analyzed the characteristics of trees bearing Black Woodpecker cavities to assess the bird's local habitat requirements and their conservation potential as habitat trees. We compared the traits and characteristics of trees bearing Black Woodpecker cavities (n = 60) and control trees (n = 56) in two managed lowland broadleave-dominated forests in France. We hypothesized that:(i)Cavity-trees would have lower wood density and display more conks of fungi than control-trees;(ii)The local environment of cavity-trees would be less crowded than those of the control trees. In particular, the first branch would be higher up, and their first neighboring tree would be further away from cavity-trees compared to control-trees;(iii)Cavity-trees would display a higher number of other woodpecker cavities and more saproxylic microhabitats than the control-trees.We validated most of our hypotheses and showed that cavity trees differed significantly from their control counterparts. Black Woodpeckers excavate trees with softer wood and higher first branches in a less crowded environment, thus minimizing both the energy dedicated to cavity excavation and predation risk. Second, cavity-trees bear more microhabitats and play a complementary umbrella role than what was documented before. They also appear a good candidate for habitat-tree conservation.In terms of biodiversity-friendly management measures, it would be beneficial to favor large isolated standing trees devoid of low branches (notably beech), especially in stands dominated by other tree species.

Abstract:The Black Woodpecker (Dryocopus martius, L. 1758) is the largest primary cavity excavator in Europe. Its cavities represent an essential microhabitat for many other forest species and the knowledge on landscape factors linked with cavity excavation by the Black Woodpecker is needed to support the conservation of this species. Such relationships should thus be quantified at the scale of the home range. We used cavity maps by foresters and naturalists to build a large (2689 cavity bearing trees) database distributed over several sites in France. Based on this and on a set of background points, we analysed the effects of stand composition and landscape features (forest cover, landscape connectivity and fragmentation) at three different scales around each cavity and background point corresponding to a forest management unit (10ha), the core (100ha) and extended (250ha) home range scales. We showed that landscape shape index and forest tree species composition (especially the presence of mixed forests) had significant effects but that the magnitude varied across the three scales. We notably observed the strongest effects at the core home range scale (100ha), indicating that Black Woodpecker requirements for cavity excavation are more pronounced at this scale. The Black Woodpecker tends to avoid conifer-dominated stands to excavate cavities, but benefits from mixed forests, that couple favourable foraging and cavity excavation sites. The bird also prefers continuous forest landscapes with low edge densities. We also showed that effects of landscape were stronger in wetter climates and higher slopes, indicating context-dependence. Forest planning rarely integrates the landscape patterns. A better understanding of the features linked with cavity excavation by the Black Woodpecker may hence help to better integrate their conservation in forest management planning. Our results for Western Europe also show the importance to maintain mixed broadleaf-conifer forests as well as continuous and well-connected forest landscapes to favour features that benefit secondary cavity nesters at the large scale.

Abstract:After a range contraction in the south-east of its European range during the twentieth century, Black Woodpecker ( Dryocopus martius ) is re-colonizing this area since the 1970s. Our analysis of published data revealed average expansion rate 70–180 km per decade, first through well-connected forests along major river systems, and later spreading to isolated forest clusters in East Ukraine. Field studies confirmed that mature Populus stands in riverine and upland broadleaved forests were preferably settled by the recolonizers. A consequence of this recolonization is the re-appearance of large excavated cavities; observations in one territory showed their fast accumulation reaching 10 cavities/km 2 in 7 years.

Abstract:American Three-toed (Picoides dorsalis) and Black-backed Woodpeckers (Picoides arcticus) are irruptive species for which yearly movements and abundance are linked to higher productivity years due to forest fire or large-scale insect outbreaks in boreal forests. Studies have found that, in Black-backed Woodpeckers, younger birds are the main colonizers of recent burns, and thus related to natal dispersion. However, age structure of dispersing boreal woodpeckers in the fall have yet to be studied. The Observatoire d’oiseaux de Tadoussac is a migration monitoring station located at the southern limit of Québec’s boreal forest and where a special effort has been made to count and capture transient boreal woodpeckers in the fall between 2000 and 2006. In this study, we investigated (1) the age structure and sex ratio of dispersing boreal woodpeckers and assessed (2) if the use of enhanced capture methods (ECM) improves their rate of capture and (3) the correlation between capture rates and visual counts. The age structure of Black-backed Woodpecker (1:13.9 [1:4.5–1:64] adult:juveniles ratio) and American Three-toed Woodpecker (1:16.7 [1:4.22–0]) was strongly skewed toward juveniles, and suggests that dispersing individuals were mainly related with post-fledging movements. The use of ECM to capture boreal woodpeckers was an efficient way of capturing these species. This method showed capture rate four times greater than the passive method. Moreover, capture rates were correlated with visual counts. Therefore, our study supports the importance of post-fledging movements in boreal woodpecker population dynamics, and shows that the use of ECM is an efficient method to capture and count these species outside their breeding season.

Abstract:What kind of tree should be preserved from logging for biodiversity conservation is a matter of debate. Large and old trees are potential candidates due to the structures they can bear, like cavities and other tree‐related microhabitats (TreMs). One of the most studied TreM is woodpecker‐made cavities, which, in addition to be breeding sites for primary cavity‐nesters, are often the main breeding sites for secondary cavity‐nesters, especially in managed forests. Therefore, understanding which trees woodpeckers select for cavities is relevant to forest management, especially in management regimes where individual trees are logged or spared, as in retention forestry. We used data from a forest inventory, TreM inventory and woodpecker counts in one‐hectare plots in the Black Forest (southwest Germany) to investigate which features make a retention tree suitable for woodpeckers. By employing a resource selection probability function, we tested several variables for their influence on the probability of tree choice by woodpeckers including altitude, tree species, TreM richness and abundance, diameter at breast height (DBH) and deviation from the mean DBH per plot. The results show that the probability of selection by woodpeckers does not correlate with individual tree diameter. Instead, the probability is driven mainly by the deviation from the mean DBH per plot. We were able to identify a relative size for the selection of trees indicating that woodpeckers prefer trees that are about 15–20 cm larger than the mean DBH per plot. Thereby, we argue, that using absolute diameter thresholds to select retention might not be the best management solution in the short‐term, as in managed forests woodpeckers might select sub‐optimal trees. Apparently, more knowledge concerning relative thresholds, as detected in our study, is required to improve our understanding of the potential ecological value of retention trees.

Abstract:Forest biodiversity conservation requires precise, area-wide information on the abundance and distribution of key habitat structures at multiple spatial scales. We combined airborne laser scanning (ALS) data with color-infrared (CIR) aerial imagery for identifying individual tree characteristics and quantifying multi-scale habitat requirements using the example of the three-toed woodpecker (Picoides tridactylus) (TTW) in the Bavarian Forest National Park (Germany). This bird, a keystone species of boreal and mountainous forests, is highly reliant on bark beetles dwelling in dead or dying trees. While previous studies showed a positive relationship between the TTW presence and the amount of deadwood as a limiting resource, we hypothesized a unimodal response with a negative effect of very high deadwood amounts and tested for effects of substrate quality. Based on 104 woodpecker presence or absence locations, habitat selection was modelled at four spatial scales reflecting different woodpecker home range sizes. The abundance of standing dead trees was the most important predictor, with an increase in the probability of TTW occurrence up to a threshold of 44–50 dead trees per hectare, followed by a decrease in the probability of occurrence. A positive relationship with the deadwood crown size indicated the importance of fresh deadwood. Remote sensing data allowed both an area-wide prediction of species occurrence and the derivation of ecological threshold values for deadwood quality and quantity for more informed conservation management.

Spatial patterns of bat diversity overlap with woodpecker abundance

Abstract:Woodpecker diversity is usually higher in natural forests rich in dead wood and old trees than in managed ones, thus this group of birds is regarded as an indicator of forest biodiversity. Woodpeckers excavate cavities which can be subsequently used by several bird species. As a consequence, their abundance indicates high avian abundance and diversity in forests. However, woodpecker-made holes may be also important for other animals, for example, mammals but it has seldom been investigated so far. Here, we examine how well one species, the Great Spotted Woodpecker, predicts species richness, occurrence and acoustic activity of bats in Polish pine forests. In 2011 we conducted woodpecker and bat surveys at 63 point-count sites in forests that varied in terms of stand age, structure and amount of dead wood. From zero to five Great Spotted Woodpeckers at a point-count site were recorded. The total duration of the echolocation calls during a 10-min visit varied from 0 to 542 s and the number of bat species/species groups recorded during a visit ranged between zero to five. The local abundance of the woodpecker was positively correlated with bat species richness (on the verge of significance), bat occurrence and pooled bat activity. The occurrence of Eptesicus and Vespertilio bats and Nyctalus species was positively related with the abundance of the Great Spotted Woodpecker. The activity of Pipistrellus pygmaeus, Eptesicus and Vespertilio bats and a group of Myotis species was not associated with the woodpecker abundance, but echolocation calls of Nyctalus species, P. nathusii and P.pipistrellus were more often at sites with many Great Spotted Woodpeckers. Moreover, the probability of bat presence and the activity of bats was generally higher shortly after dusk and in middle of the summer than in late spring. We suggest that the observed correlations can be driven by similar roosting habitats (e.g., woodpeckers can provide breeding cavities for bats) or possibly by associated invertebrate food resources of woodpeckers and bats. The abundance of Great Spotted Woodpecker seems to be a good positive indicator of bat species richness, occurrence and activity, thus adding a group of relatively cryptic forest species that are indicated by the presence of the Great Spotted Woodpecker.

Abstract:Abstract Diversity in behavior is important for migratory birds in adapting to dynamic environmental and habitat conditions and responding to global change. Migratory behavior can be described by a variety of factors that comprise migration strategies. We characterized variation in migration strategies in American Woodcock (Scolopax minor), a migratory gamebird experiencing long-term population decline, using GPS data from ~300 individuals tracked throughout eastern North America. We classified woodcock migratory movements using a step-length threshold, and calculated characteristics of migration related to distance, path, and stopping events. We then used principal components analysis (PCA) to ordinate variation in migration characteristics along axes that explained different fundamental aspects of migration, and tested effects of body condition, age-sex class, and starting and ending location on PCA results. The PCA did not show evidence for clustering, suggesting a lack of discrete strategies among groups of individuals; rather, woodcock migration strategies existed along continuous gradients driven most heavily by metrics associated with migration distance and duration, departure timing, and stopping behavior. Body condition did not explain variation in migration strategy during the fall or spring, but during spring adult males and young females differed in some characteristics related to migration distance and duration. Starting and ending latitude and longitude, particularly the northernmost point of migration, explained up to 61% of the variation in any one axis of migration strategy. Our results reveal gradients in migration behavior of woodcock, and this variability should increase the resilience of woodcock to future anthropogenic landscape and climate change.

Hole Life: Survival Patterns and Reuse of Cavities Made by the Lesser Spotted Woodpecker Dendrocopos minor

Abstract:Primary cavity-producers such as woodpeckers produce nest sites for several other cavity-nesting animals and, thus, are often considered to be keystone species. However, the persistence and occupancy rates of cavities are rarely known and as such the real importance of primary cavity-producers also remains unclear. Cavities of the Lesser Spotted Woodpecker Dendrocopos minor were monitored during their whole lifespan. The data include the annual availability and occupancy history of 106 cavities in a 170-km2 area in southern Finland during 19872018. The median survival time of a cavity was six years, but there were differences between the various forest types (range six to eight years). The median time for cavity fall was six years, and five years for cavity damage. Six bird species used the old cavities for breeding, with the Pied Flycatcher Ficedula hypoleuca the dominant species accounting for 53% of all occupancies. The cavity reuse rate in the Lesser Spotted Woodpecker was 3.6%. The mean occupancy by secondary cavity-nesting birds in old cavities was 32%, with a range of 2936% across the various forest types. There was a significant negative correlation between annual occupancy rates and the age of the cavity. The first two years of a cavity were found to be the most important for total occupancy and 90% of occupancies took place before the median age of the cavities. The expected mean number of lifespan occupancies by secondary cavity-nesters for a single cavity was 1.97. The results indicate that new, fresh cavities are continuously needed for the secondary cavity-nesters that use Lesser Spotted Woodpecker cavities in their territories.

Abstract:Molecular techniques have revealed that avian mating systems are more diverse and complex than previously thought. We used microsatellite markers to determine genetic parentage, the prevalence of extrapair paternity and quasi-parasitism (i.e. situations where a male's extrapair mate lay in his nest) in a socially monogamous population of three-toed woodpeckers (Picoides tridactylus) in southern Finland. A total of 129 adults and nestlings, representing 5-9 families annually from 2004-2007, were genotyped at up to ten microsatellite loci. The results of genetic assignment tests confirmed that monogamous parentage characterized the majority (84.6%, 22/26) of broods, and that most (93.8%, 75/80) nestlings were the offspring of their social parents. Two of 80 nestlings (2.5%) in two of 26 broods (7.7%) were sired by extrapair males and quasi-parasitism occurred in 3.8% (3/80) of nestlings and 7.7% (2/26) of broods. Hence, the levels of extrapair parentage were low, possibly because both genetic polygyny and polyandry are constrained by the high paternal effort required for parental care. The co-occurrence of low levels of extrapair paternity and quasi-parasitism are discussed in light of ecological and behavioural factors characterizing the species biology.
Foraging sites of the Eurasian Three-toed Woodpecker (Picoides tridactylus) in relation to sex in primeval forest stands of the Białowieża National Park

Abstract:Despite a clear preference of the Eurasian Three-toed Woodpecker Picoides tridactylus for spruce trees as foraging sites by both males and females, some studies showed intersexual resource partitioning that allows competition for food to be minimized. The objective of the study was to characterize foraging sites of the Three-toed Woodpecker in the primeval stands of the Białowieża National Park (BNP, Poland) in relation to sex. Although the woodpeckers foraged on seven tree species, both males and females foraged predominantly on spruce (83% and 90% of the observations, respectively). Selection indices showed a significant preference for dead spruce trees for both sexes and additionally for live spruce trees in the case of females. Spruce trees where woodpeckers foraged were twice as thick as those available, regardless of whether they were dead or alive. The only feature differentiating the feeding sites of males and females was the diameter of the part of the tree at foraging locations. This suggests that there is some niche partitioning between the sexes of the Three-toed Woodpecker in primeval stands of the BNP. Our research clearly showed that even in the very rich environment of the BNP, abounding in various forms of dead wood, large dead spruce trees are crucial for the Eurasian Three-toed Woodpecker.

Foraging Niche Differentiation of Five Woodpecker Species in the Primitive Broadleaved Korean Pine Forests of Northeast China

Abstract:Explaining the mechanism of the coexistence of sympatric species is an important goal of ecology. Five species of woodpeckers coexist in the broadleaved Korean pine forest of Liangshui National Nature Reserve, including the Black Woodpecker (Dryocopus martius), Great Spotted Woodpecker (Dendrocopos major), Lesser Spotted Woodpecker (Dendrocopos minor), Three-toed Woodpecker (Picoides tridactylus), and White-backed Woodpecker (Dendrocopos leucotos). Woodpeckers are considered to be keystone species because of their role as ecosystem engineers, creating breeding and shelter sites for many vertebrate and invertebrate taxa. As woodpeckers are predominant in primary forests, they are sensitive to changes in forest ecosystems. To understand their coexistence mechanisms and propose conservation strategies, it is necessary to investigate their foraging niche differentiation. This study aimed to identify the foraging behavior parameters and foraging tree parameters of five woodpecker species in Liangshui Reserve from October to December. The foraging niches of five woodpecker species were observed, including the type of foraging techniques, foraging height, foraging site, foraging duration, tree species being foraged upon, diameter of the foraging tree at breast height, foraging tree height, and decay status of trees. Our results identified that there were significant differences in the overall foraging ecology of the five species of woodpecker at Liangshui Reserve. The Great Spotted Woodpecker and Lesser Spotted Woodpecker had more diverse foraging patterns and preferred to forage on live trees. The Black Woodpecker and Three-toed Woodpecker excavated and pecked at the trunks of decaying spruce and fir trees. The White-backed Woodpecker preferred to forage in broadleaved trees. The choice of foraging sites was complicated. The size of the foraging trees and decay status of trees were important bases for woodpeckers when choosing trees to forage from. Different woodpeckers achieve stable coexistence through the separation of their foraging niches. This information regarding foraging behavior and foraging tree characteristics provides a basis to study the coexistence patterns of woodpeckers. Our research into woodpecker foraging should be used to inform forest management practices, protect forest ecosystem diversities, and maintain woodpecker community diversity.

Seasonal variation in home-range size of the White-backed Woodpecker

Abstract:Knowing a species' area requirements is fundamental for species conservation. For the nominate subspecies of the White-backed Woodpecker Dendrocopos leucotos , a species of high conservation concern in Europe, estimates of the seasonal and year-round area requirements based on telemetry are missing. In the present study, we radio-tracked adult White-backed Woodpeckers in Central Europe and investigated bi-monthly home-range sizes based on three home-range estimators in relation to season, sex, body weight, and year. Home-range size of 49 radio-tracked individuals varied depending on the used home-range estimator, with minimum convex polygons (MCP) and autocorrelated kernel density estimation (AKDE) producing 1.6–1.8 and 2–3.3 times larger seasonal home ranges than traditional kernel density estimation (KDE). Moreover, home-range sizes varied between seasons. Home ranges were smallest in February/March (predicted median home-range sizes ranged from 35 ha with KDE to 88 ha with AKDE) and April/May (KDE: 30 ha, AKDE: 55 ha) and larger during the rest of the year (KDE: 48–67 ha, AKDE: 136–184 ha). The mean home-range size of six individuals tracked in all seasons (calculated with all locations per individual) was 116 ha with KDE, 304 ha with MCP and 350 ha with AKDE. Our results highlight the importance of considering the full annual cycle when addressing area requirements of White-backed Woodpeckers and likely also of other species. Furthermore, our study shows that using multiple methods for home-range estimation may be useful to obtain results that are both comparable with those of other studies and capture the range in which the true home-range size is likely to be. For the conservation of the White-backed Woodpecker, we conclude that at least 116–350 ha of forest should be present for a pair.

Abstract:The instantaneous scan method was used to study time budget and activity rhythm of four captive Great Spotted Woodpeckers(Dendrocopos major) in Beijing Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Center from June to August in 2011.One-way ANOVA were used to analyze the differences in activity rhythm between hours and diurnal time budget between male and female.The birds spent their time mainly in resting,flying & walking,and foraging at frequency of 36.24%,26.96%,and 17.69% respectively.Except for foraging,preening and other behavior,the time budget of each behavior were not difference significantly between male and female(P>0.05).The diurnal activity of the four birds had a significant rhythm with an activity peak in the morning and rest peak at midday.No significant difference was detected in frequency of flying and walking,preening,resting and jumping between male and female(P>0.05),however,male foraged with a higher frequency than the female did(P<0.05).

Abstract:The Red-cockaded Woodpecker (Dryobates borealis) was once common in longleaf pine (Pinus palustris) forests of the southeastern United States and played an important role through its excavation of long-lasting cavities in living pine trees. The old-growth forests once inhabited by Red-cockaded Woodpeckers have nearly disappeared, leaving unanswered questions regarding the relationship this keystone excavator had with other cavity-nesting birds in terms of nest-site use. To investigate some of these relationships, we studied nest-site characteristics of 10 cavity-nesting bird species in 4 remnant old-growth stands of longleaf pine in the Red Hills region of southwest Georgia. Each stand featured numerous cavities excavated by Red-cockaded Woodpeckers (>0.6/ha) in addition to cavities excavated in dead trees (i.e., snags) by other species. We quantified nest tree characteristics and assessed the similarity of nest sites selected by different species based on substrate, decay, cavity height, diameter at breast height (DBH), and cavity location. Red-headed Woodpecker (Melanerpes erythrocephalus), Red-bellied Woodpecker (M. carolinus), and Northern Flicker (Colaptes auratus) used large (>40 cm DBH) dead trees in addition to Red-cockaded Woodpecker cavities. These snags were missing most of their tertiary limbs, and often lacked bark. Brown-headed Nuthatch (Sitta pusilla) and Eastern Bluebird (Sialia sialis) exhibited substantial overlap through their use of short, well-decayed snags that were typically very charred from fires and <3 m in height. Although they occurred in low nest numbers, Tufted Titmouse (Baeolophus bicolor), White-breasted Nuthatch (S. carolinensis), and Wood Duck (Aix sponsa) used Red-cockaded Woodpecker cavities exclusively on our sites. Studies of cavity-nesting bird nest-site characteristics in other areas where Red-cockaded Woodpeckers occur are needed to help understand regional differences and the breadth of the role this keystone excavator species could play again in supporting the secondary cavity-nesting community in old-growth forests. Para investigar algunas de esas relaciones, estudiamos caractersticas de anidacin de 10 especies de aves que anidan en cavidades en 4 sitios de bosques remanentes de longleaf pine en la regon de la regin Red Hills al sudoeste de Georgia. Cada sitio present numerosas cavidades excavadas por Red-cockaded Woodpeckers (>0.6/ha) adems de cavidades excavadas por otras especies en rboles muertos (como troncos). Cuantificamos caractersticas de anidacin en rboles y evaluamos la similitud de los sitios de anidacin selecciondos por diferentes especies con base en el sustrato, descomposicin, altura de la cavidad, dimetro a la altura del pecho (DAP) y localizacin de la cavidad. El carpintero Melanerpes erythrocephalus, el carpintero M. carolinus y el carpintero Colaptes auratus usaron rboles muertos grandes (>40 cm DBH) adems de las cavidades de carpintero Dryobates borealis. La mayora de troncos carecan de ramificacin terciaria y usualmente no tenan corteza. El trepador Sitta pusilla y el azulejo Sialia sialis tuvieron un traslape significativo en su uso de troncos pequeos y en estado avanzado de descomposicin tpicamente carbonizados y de <3 m de altura. Aunque se encontraron menos nidos de estas especies, el herrerillo Baeolophus bicolor, el trepador S. carolinensis y el pato Aix sponsa utilizaron nicamente cavidades de carpintero Dryobates borealis en nuestros sitios. Estudios de caractersticas de aves que anidan en cavidades donde se encuentran los carpintero Dryobates borealis son necesarios para ayudar a entender diferencias regionales y la amplitud del papel que esta especie excavadora clave podra tener en el apoyo a la comunidad de aves de anidamiento secundario en cavidades en bosques maduros. Abstract:Background During their movements in the wild, wood mice (Apodemus sylvaticus) distribute small objects, such as leaves or twigs, which are often visually conspicuous. Our experiments demonstrate that these marks serve as points of reference during exploration. Way-marking, as we call it, may diminish the likelihood of losing an "interesting" location, perhaps following disturbance by, for example, a predator or conspecific. Way-marks, being readily portable, may be a less confusing method of marking ephemeral sites than scent marks. They may also be a safer option for local navigation insofar as scent marks can easily be detected by a predator. Abstract:Abstract Bark beetles infest several pine tree species, often creating major economic losses. Biotic interactions between Scolytinae populations inhabiting Pinus sylvestris were analyzed using a new sampling method involving a two dimensional division of tree space resources into units and sections. The goal was to evaluate the effects of the type of available reproduction material on insect infestation. The P. sylvestris stands in this study included an analysis of bark beetles colonizing dead trees and uninfested living trees (trap trees). Analyzed trees were harvested and their stems divided into ten equal units; each unit was halved into two sections (half of the stem circumference). The colonization of dead trees by insects was evaluated immediately after cutting for infested trees and 2 months after cutting for trap trees. The type of breeding material significantly affected the species composition of bark beetles infesting P. sylvestris . The dead trees were colonized mostly by Trypodendron lineatum and Tomicus minor , and to a lesser extent by Tomicus piniperda , which dominated in trap trees. Tomicus piniperda and T. lineatum preferred thicker stems; however, T. minor , Hylurgops palliatus and Pityogenes bidentatus preferred thinner ones. The application of the new sampling method helped to increase the accuracy of niche segregation among insect species. The results of niche segregation indicate bark beetles exhibited spatial specialization in the use of resources, mainly related to the moisture content of breeding material and the availability of food resources which is the main factor determining the coexistence of bark beetles in the same environment.

Abstract:Beyond preferences for particular species of tree, bark-foraging birds are associated with various tree characteristics such as decay stage, trunk diameter, or bark roughness. Our objectives were to study the winter foraging ecology of different bark-foraging bird species in the highly diverse floodplain forests of Donau-Auen National Park (Austria) by examining the importance of tree species and characteristics. We used 'first-foraging' observations on the great spotted woodpecker ( Dendrocopos major ), middle spotted woodpecker ( Leiopicus medius ), Eurasian nuthatch ( Sitta europaea ), treecreepers ( Certhia spp.), great tit ( Parus major ), Eurasian blue tit ( Cyanistes caeruleus ), and marsh tit ( Poecile palustris ). We examined bird-tree relationships with a bird-plant network approach, where we compared traits of trees and their preferences among avian species. The five most important tree species relative to distance-weighted fragmentation were European white elm ( Ulmus laevis ), pedunculate oak ( Quercus robur ), common ash ( Fraxinus excelsior ), and white and black poplar ( Populus alba, P. nigra ). Avian taxa differed only in the use of tree condition, where woodpeckers used decayed and dead trees more than tits. Most species preferred trees of larger trunk diameter with rougher bark. We suspect that changes in these highly diverse floodplain forest stands will eventually lead to changes in bark-foraging bird assemblages. For the protection of such highly diverse floodplain forests, conservation-based water management practices will be crucial to maintaining a sufficient groundwater table. Our findings also suggest that forest management practices should focus on more diverse commercial forest stands with a critical amount of secondary tree species, a variety of size classes, varying tree conditions, and species with different bark roughness classes.

Abstract:The Eurasian woodcock prefers habitats where its main prey, earthworms, can be found in higher densities. Although they are forest-dwelling birds, they regularly visit pastures and natural grasslands at night, where earthworm abundance is generally higher. However, there is little information on fine-scale habitat use in relation to variation in habitat characteristics and prey availability, particularly beyond the breeding season. In our study, we investigated if the nocturnal occurrence of woodcocks during migratory stopover periods differed between two neighbouring fields, or management units, with similar vegetation structure, and if within-field variation in the spatial patterns of woodcock sightings were associated with fine-scale earthworm densities and soil parameters. Specifically, we used GPS tracking data of two tagged woodcocks and direct observation data to study patterns of occurrence of birds in a mixed forest-pasture landscape in Hungary during pre- and post-breeding periods. We compared these patterns with fine-scale soil characteristics and earthworm abundance, acquired by field sampling. We found that the field with higher earthworm abundance was visited by woodcocks more frequently, and this correlation was similarly observed at the intra-field level. Our results demonstrate that woodcocks select foraging sites with higher earthworm densities at multiple spatial scales, both between fields (coarse scale), and within fields (fine-scale). Considering that woodcocks tended to return to the same field to forage at night, the strong associations between occupancy and resources provide a basis for developing habitat management strategies at the field level for conservation. As earthworm densities and soil parameters are good indicators of woodcock foraging habitat, measuring those variables, at least at a coarse scale, could aid in predicting important habitats for the species across the landscape.

Abstract:1. Anthropogenic actions cause rapid ecological changes, meaning that animals have to respond before they have time to adapt. Tools to quantify emergent spatial patterns from animal-habitat interaction mechanisms are vital for predicting the population-level effects of such changes. 2. Environmental perturbations are particularly prevalent in the Amazon rainforest, and have a profound effect on fragmentation-sensitive insectivorous bird flocks. Therefore it is important to be able to predict the effects of such changes on the flocks' space-use patterns. 3. We use a step selection function (SSF) approach to uncover environmental drivers behind movement choices. This is used to construct a mechanistic model, from which we derive predicted utilization distributions (home ranges) of flocks. 4. We show that movement decisions are significantly influenced by canopy height and topography, but not resource depletion and renewal. We quantify the magnitude of these effects and demonstrate that they are helpful for understanding various heterogeneous aspects of space use. We compare our results to recent analytic derivations of space use, demonstrating that they are only accurate when assuming that there is no persistence in the animals' movement. 5. Our model can be translated into other environments or hypothetical scenarios, such as those given by proposed future anthropogenic actions, to make predictions of spatial patterns in bird flocks. Furthermore, our approach is quite general, so could be used to predict the effects of habitat changes on spatial patterns for a wide variety of animal communities.
