Abstract:Introduction: Hearing loss is the most common sensory-neurological defect in humans. The most common hearing impairment is sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) caused by the inner ear and related nerves. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) is an advanced MRI technique that can provide valuable information about auditory neural pathways and their microstructural changes. The present study was designed to investigate the microstructural changes in auditory pathways-related fiber tracts in children with SNHL. Methods: Twenty-two children including 11 subjects with SNHL aged 1-4 years and 11 healthy children were examined as controls. Then, DTI-derived parameters, such as fractional anisotropy (FA), mean diffusivity (MD), axial diffusivity (AxD), and radial diffusivity (RD), and volume of fiber tracts were extracted from the inferior longitudinal fasciculus, acoustic radiation, and uncinate fasciculus. Results: The results showed an increase in MD, RD, and AxD as well as a decrease in FA, volume, and diameter of auditory-pathway-related fiber tracts. Interestingly, there was an increase in the FA of acoustic radiation. Conclusion: White matter connections in the auditory canal decrease and AR integrity increases due to compensatory effects. These probably reflect atrophy or degradation as well as compensatory cross-modal reorganization in the absence of auditory input and the use of sign language. Highlights: Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) plays an important role in preoperative planning.Anatomical knowledge of the auditory tract is essential for lacrimal drainage surgeries, such as cochlear implantation.DTI-based biomarkers for brain changes and allows us to better understand the pathophysiological changes of auditory tract.Microstructural changes in the fiber tracts associated with the auditory pathway can distinguish sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) from healthy subjects. Plain language summary: Sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) is the most common type and accounts for the majority of all hearing loss. SNHL is a congenital deficit and refers to any cause of hearing loss due to a pathology of the cochlea, auditory nerve, or central nervous system. One of the chief treatment planning is cochlear implant for these patients. So, it is necessary to evaluate the auditory system by imaging devices such as MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) before treatment. Diffusion tensor imaging tractography, or diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) tractography, is an MRI technique that measures the rate of water diffusion between cells to understand and create a map of the body's internal structures; it is most commonly used to provide imaging of the brain. The purpose of the present research was to assess the auditory system and its nerve routs in children before cochlear implant. This study showed that DT imaging is a novel approach for assessment of children with SNHL before and treatment.
The spatial organization of ascending auditory pathway microstructural maturation from infancy through adolescence using a novel fiber tracking approach

Abstract:Auditory perception is established through experience-dependent stimuli exposure during sensitive developmental periods; however, little is known regarding the structural development of the central auditory pathway in humans. The present study characterized the regional developmental trajectories of the ascending auditory pathway from the brainstem to the auditory cortex from infancy through adolescence using a novel diffusion MRI-based tractography approach and along-tract analyses. We used diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and neurite orientation dispersion and density imaging (NODDI) to quantify the magnitude and timing of auditory pathway microstructural maturation. We found spatially varying patterns of white matter maturation along the length of the tract, with inferior brainstem regions developing earlier than thalamocortical projections and left hemisphere tracts developing earlier than the right. These results help to characterize the processes that give rise to functional auditory processing and may provide a baseline for detecting abnormal development.

Abstract:Objective Magnetic resonance diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) was applied to study the cantral auditong pathway in patients with .Methods A total of 30 cases of acquired hearing loss patients were divided into 2 groups ,group 1 (15 ,sudden deafness) and group 2 (15 ,with duration up to 2 years SNHL group from the time of onset) .A total of 15 cases of normal-hearing patients on MRI examination were selected as the control group for the same period .All subjects received DTI of whole brain .The values of the whole brain DTI were obtained from the inferior colliculus and lateral lemniscus ,consisting of the fractional anisotropy (FA) ,radial diffusion (RD) ,axi‐al dispersion (AD) and mean diffusivity .Results There were significant differences(P<0 .05) in FA of bilateral in‐ferior colliculus among sudden deafness group ,SNHL of 2 -year -history group and the control group by ANO‐VA .FA of inferior colliculus in the control group was higher than that of in the SNHL group ,but lower than that of in the sudden deafness group .RD of lateral lemniscus in the SNHL group was higher than that of in the sudden deafness group(P<0 .05) ,MD of lateral lemniscus in the sudden deafness group was higher among the other 2 groups ,and there were signigicant(P<0 .05) .For AD of the inferior colliculug and lateral lemniscus ,there were no differ‐ences among the 3 groups (P>0 .05) .Conclusion There was no obviously abnormal change on the central auditory processing in sudden deafness group ,but significant destruction was found on 2 years SNHL group .It indicated that central auditory processing of the history of sensorineural deafness affected the structural changes of the central au‐ditory pathway .

Abstract:Purpose: To prospectively compare diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) measures of axial diffusivity (lambda||), radial diffusivity (lambda perpendicular to), mean diffusivity (MD), and fractional anisotropy (FA) along the auditory pathway of patients with sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) and normal controls.Materials and Methods: In 37 individuals with SNHL and 10 healthy controls, two regions of interest (ROIs) positioned along the auditory pathway-the lateral lemniscus (LL) and the inferior colliculus (IC)-were investigated bilaterally using diffusion tensor imaging at 3 T. SNHL patients were divided into three groups: patients with bilateral hearing loss, patients with unilateral hearing loss, and patients with partial hearing loss. DTI measures (lambda||, lambda perpendicular to, MD, FA) of both ROIs were determined in all subjects.Results: The FA value was reduced and the lambda perpendicular to was increased both at the lateral lemniscus and the inferior colliculus of patients with SNHL compared with controls. Similar changes were seen between the ipsilateral and contralateral LL and IC: for patients of unilateral profound heating loss. No changes were observed in any other parameters.Conclusion: In SNHL patients DTI showed a high radial diffusivity that consequently led to a decreased fractional anisotropy in the LL and the IC.

Abstract:Crossmodal neuroplastic changes following auditory deprivation in individuals with profound sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) have been well documented in previous literature. However, previous studies have shown very little evidence of structural brain changes in individuals with prelingually profound SNHL and no studies have reported significant differences of gray matter (GM) in deaf subjects. Therefore, it is essential to employ a more specific and sensitive technique to detect subtle structural brain differences in deaf individuals. The objective of our study was to investigate neuroanatomical differences in children and adolescents with profound SNHL by cortical thickness analysis and optimized voxel-based morphometry (VBM). T1-weighted volumetric images of 16 children and adolescents with prelingually profound SNHL and 16 hearing controls were analyzed. The ANCOVA analysis revealed a statistically significant decreased average cortical thickness of the whole brain. As to vertex-based analysis, cortical thickness of the deaf subjects showed significant thinning in the left precentral gyrus, right postcentral gyrus, the left superior occipital gyrus and the left fusiform gyrus compared with the hearing subjects. VBM revealed statistically significant focal reduction of white matter (WM) volume in the left middle frontal gyrus and the right inferior occipital gyrus in deaf subjects without statistically significant differences in GM volume between the two groups. These findings demonstrated that structural changes happened not only in the WM but also in the GM of the subjects with prelingually profound SNHL, which have never been reported before in any previous literature. Our results also implicated the potential neuroplastic changes associated with crossmodal reorganization in the brain after auditory deprivation in the early deafness.

Abstract:Diffusion MRI (dMRI) is known to be sensitive to hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) , however, the existing dMRI studies only used diffusion tensor metrics in a few selected brain regions and primarily focus on severe-to-moderate HIE. Here we investigated microstructural alterations using multi-shell dMRI across the whole-brain in severe, moderate, and mild HIE babies (n=5/13/13) in comparison with control neonates (n=11) with region-of-interest-based, tract-based, and fixel-based analysis. We found microstructural alternations in projection and association fibers, especially the inferior fronto-occipital fasciculus and inferior longitudinal fasciculus that are important for visual functions.

Abstract:Profound sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) is an auditory disability associated with auditory and cognitive dysfunction. Due to distinct pathogenesis, some associated structural and functional changes within the brain have been investigated in previous studies, but whole-brain structural alterations are incompletely understood. We extended the exploration of neuroanatomic differences in whole-brain structure in children with profound SNHL who are primarily users of Chinese sign language (CSL). We employed surface-based morphometry (SBM) and subcortical analyses. T1-weighted magnetic resonance images of 26 children with profound SNHL and 27 age- and sex-matched children with normal hearing were analyzed. Compared with the normal control (NC) group, children with profound SNHL showed diverse structural changes in surface-based and subcortical analyses, including decreased cortical thickness in the left postcentral gyrus, superior parietal lobule, paracentral lobule, precuneus, the right transverse temporal gyri, and the middle temporal gyrus; a noticeable increase in the Local Gyrification Index (LGI) in the left precuneus and superior parietal lobule; and diverse changes in gray-matter volume (GMV) in different brain regions. Surface-based vertex analyses revealed regional contractions in the right thalamus, putamen, pallidum, and the brainstem of children with profound SNHL when compared with those in the NC group. Volumetric analyses showed decreased volumes of the right thalamus and pallidum in children with profound SNHL. Our data suggest that children with profound SNHL are associated with diffuse cerebral dysfunction to cortical and subcortical nuclei, and revealed neuroplastic reorganization in the precuneus, superior parietal lobule, and temporal gyrus. Our study provides robust evidence for changes in connectivity and structure in the brain associated with hearing loss.

Abstract:Objective To explore the changes in the cerebral microstructure of patients with noise‐induced hearing loss (NIHL) using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). Method Overall, 122 patients with NIHL (mild [MP, n = 79], relatively severe patients [including moderate and severe; RSP, n = 32], and undetermined [lost to follow‐up, n = 11]) and 84 healthy controls (HCs) were enrolled. All clinical data, including age, education level, hearing threshold, occupation type, noise exposure time, and some scale scores (including the Mini‐Mental State Examination [MMSE], tinnitus handicap inventory [THI], and Hamilton Anxiety Scale [HAMA]), were collected and analyzed. All participants underwent T1WI3DFSPGR and DTI, and tract‐based spatial statistics and region of interest (ROI) analysis were used for assessment. Abstract:Profound congenital sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) prevents children from developing spoken language. Cochlear implantation and auditory brainstem implantation can provide partial hearing sensation, but language development outcomes can vary, particularly for patients with inner ear malformations and/or cochlear nerve deficiency (IEM&CND). Currently, the peripheral auditory structure is evaluated through visual inspection of clinical imaging, but this method is insufficient for surgical planning and prognosis. The central auditory pathway is also challenging to examine in vivo due to its delicate subcortical structures. Previous attempts to locate subcortical auditory nuclei using fMRI responses to sounds are not applicable to patients with profound hearing loss as no auditory brainstem responses can be detected in these individuals, making it impossible to capture corresponding blood oxygen signals in fMRI. In this study, we developed a new pipeline for mapping the auditory pathway using structural and diffusional MRI. We used a fixel-based approach to investigate the structural development of the auditory-language network for profound SNHL children with normal peripheral structure and those with IEM&CND under 6 years old. Our findings indicate that the language pathway is more sensitive to peripheral auditory condition than the central auditory pathway, highlighting the importance of early intervention for profound SNHL children to provide timely speech inputs. We also propose a comprehensive pre-surgical evaluation extending from the cochlea to the auditory-language network, showing significant correlations between age, gender, Cn.VIII median contrast value, and the language network with post-implant qualitative outcomes.

Brain structure correlates with auditory function in children diagnosed with auditory neuropathy spectrum disorder

Abstract:Introduction: Auditory neuropathy spectrum disorder (ANSD) is a term for a collection of test results which indicate disruption of the auditory signal at some point along the neural pathway. This results in a spectrum of functional outcomes, ranging from reasonably normal hearing to profound hearing loss. This study assessed brain structure changes and behavioral correlates in children diagnosed with ANSD. Methods: Seventeen children who had previously been diagnosed with ANSD were recruited to the study and underwent a battery of behavioral measures of hearing, language, and communication, along with structural MR imaging. Analysis of cortical thickness of temporal lobe structures was carried out using FreeSurfer. Tract-based spatial statistics were performed on standard diffusion parameters of fractional anisotropy and diffusivity metrics. The control group comprised imaging data taken from a library of MRI scans from neurologically normal children. Control images were matched as closely as possible to the ANSD group for age and sex. Results: Reductions in right temporal lobe cortical thickness were observed in children with ANSD compared to controls. Increases in medial diffusivity in areas including the corpus callosum and in the right occipital white matter were also seen in the group with ANSD compared to controls. Speech perception abilities, both in quiet and in noise, were correlated with cortical thickness measurements for several temporal lobe structures in children with ANSD, and relationships were also seen between diffusion metrics and measures of auditory function. Conclusion: This study shows that children with ANSD have structural brain differences compared to healthy controls. It also demonstrates associations between brain structure and behavioral hearing abilities in children diagnosed with ANSD. These results show that there is a potential for structural imaging to be used as a biomarker in this population with the possibility of predicting functional hearing outcome.
Dynamic functional network connectivity in children with profound bilateral congenital sensorineural hearing loss

Abstract:Background: Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies have revealed extensive functional reorganization in patients with sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL). However, almost no study focuses on the dynamic functional connectivity after hearing loss. Objective: This study aimed to investigate dynamic functional connectivity changes in children with profound bilateral congenital SNHL under the age of 3 years. Materials and methods: Thirty-two children with profound bilateral congenital SNHL and 24 children with normal hearing were recruited for the present study. Independent component analysis identified 18 independent components composing five resting-state networks. A sliding window approach was used to acquire dynamic functional matrices. Three states were identified using the k-means algorithm. Then, the differences in temporal properties and the variance of network efficiency between groups were compared. Results: The children with SNHL showed longer mean dwell time and decreased functional connectivity between the auditory network and sensorimotor network in state 3 (P < 0.05), which was characterized by relatively stronger functional connectivity between high-order resting-state networks and motion and perception networks. There was no difference in the variance of network efficiency. Conclusions: These results indicated the functional reorganization due to hearing loss. This study also provided new perspectives for understanding the state-dependent connectivity patterns in children with SNHL.

Abstract:Sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) is a complex and challenging emergency which requires evidence regarding its pathophysiological changes to guide the treatment. The aim of this study was to evaluate the white matter integrity of the auditory neural pathway in patients with unilateral SSNHL in acute stage by using diffusion spectrum imaging tractography. In the present study, 60 individuals with acute SSNHL (29 males, 50.7 ± 11.8 years) and 25 healthy controls (13 males, 45.2 ± 13.2 years) underwent diffusion spectrum imaging tractography and high resolution T1 structural examinations using a 3T magnetic resonance imaging system. The areas of the auditory neural pathway were defined as regions of interest (ROIs). The quantitative anisotropy (QA) and the generalized fractional anisotropy (GFA) were compared between the patients with unilateral SSNHL and controls in these ROIs. We further evaluated the correlation between the parameter values and hearing loss level. The mean pure tone audiometry of patients at the onset presentation was 63.2 ± 26.2 dB. The right-sided SSNHL was involved in 25 (41.7%) cases and the left-sided in 35 (58.3%) cases. The QA values in the contralateral medial geniculate body, the bilateral anterior corona radiata and the anterior limb of internal capsule were significantly reduced in SSNHL patients compared to controls. In addition, the decrease QA value of the contralateral medial geniculate body was related to the increase severity of disease, even after controlling potential confounding factors. The present study demonstrated that patients with SSNHL exhibited altered integrity of white matter in the auditory neural pathway. Furthermore, the decreased QA values in the contralateral medial geniculate body might predict the severity of this disease. In the present study, tinnitus has not been found to effect in brain area obviously.

Abstract:Objective To study the time-dependent changes and mechanisms of auditory cortex in prelingual sensorineural hearing loss. Methods Two groups (9-12, 19-22-year-old) of hearing-loss patients and matched normal hearing subjects received MR diffusion and MRS examination. The ROI for ADC measurement were placed on the Heschl gyrus (HG), and for NAA/Cr, Cho/Cr on the superior temporal gyrus(STG). Conclusion Compared with the normal hearing, the ADC value increased in 20-year-length of deafness. The NAA/Cr and Cho/Cr of STG showed no changes among the three groups.
Changes in the Functional Connectivity of Auditory and Language-Related Brain Regions in Children with Congenital Severe Sensorineural Hearing Loss: an Fmri Study

Abstract:Early hearing deprivation can affect the development of hearing, language, and vision. Thirty-four infants with congenital severe sensorineural hearing loss (CSSHL) and 20 age- and sex-matched subjects with normal hearing were recruited. The amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (ALFF) of auditory and language-related brain areas was compared between infants with deafness and control subjects. Relative to subjects with normal hearing, infants with CSSHL had decreased ALFF values in the right Brodmann's area (BA) 22 region and in parts of several language-related regions. As the duration of hearing loss increased, the ALFF values in the left auditory and linguistic brain regions increased. These findings indicate that hearing deprivation affects the functional connectivity between auditory and language-related brain regions and the corresponding sensory and visual functional brain regions and that this functional connectivity decreases as the duration of hearing loss increases. Cochlear implantation performed after 24 months may limit the habilitation of hearing and speech functions due to functional reorganization of the auditory and linguistic brain areas over time.

Abstract:Introduction: Sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) can arise from a diverse range of congenital and acquired factors. Detecting it early is pivotal for nurturing speech, language, and cognitive development in children with SNHL. In our study, we utilized synthetic magnetic resonance imaging (SyMRI) to assess alterations in both gray and white matter within the brains of children affected by SNHL. Methods: The study encompassed both children diagnosed with SNHL and a control group of children with normal hearing {1.5-month-olds ( n = 52) and 3-month-olds ( n = 78)}. Participants were categorized based on their auditory brainstem response (ABR) threshold, delineated into normal, mild, moderate, and severe subgroups.Clinical parameters were included and assessed the correlation with SNHL. Quantitative analysis of brain morphology was conducted using SyMRI scans, yielding data on brain segmentation and relaxation time.Through both univariate and multivariate analyses, independent factors predictive of SNHL were identified. The efficacy of the prediction model was evaluated using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves, with visualization facilitated through the utilization of a nomogram. It's important to note that due to the constraints of our research, we worked with a relatively small sample size. Results: Neonatal hyperbilirubinemia (NH) and children with inner ear malformation (IEM) were associated with the onset of SNHL both at 1.5 and 3-month groups. At 3-month group, the moderate and severe subgroups exhibited elevated quantitative T1 values in the inferior colliculus (IC), lateral lemniscus (LL), and middle cerebellar peduncle (MCP) compared to the normal group. Additionally, WMV, WMF, MYF, and MYV were significantly reduced relative to the normal group. Additionally, SNHL-children with IEM had high T1 values in IC, and LL and reduced WMV, WMF, MYV and MYF values as compared with SNHL-children without IEM at 3-month group. LL-T1 and WMF were independent risk factors associated with SNHL. Consequently, a prediction model was devised based on LL-T1 and WMF. ROC for training set, validation set and external set were 0.865, 0.806, and 0.736, respectively. Conclusion: The integration of T1 quantitative values and brain volume segmentation offers a valuable tool for tracking brain development in children affected by SNHL and assessing the progression of the condition's severity.

Abstract:Aim: To evaluate the role of diffusion tensor imaging of the auditory pathway in patients with Crigler Najjar syndrome type I and its relation to auditory brainstem response. Methods: Prospective study was done including 12 patients with Crigler Najjar syndrome type I and 10 age- and sex-matched controls that underwent diffusion tensor imaging of brain. Mean diffusivity and fractional anisotropy at 4 regions of the brain and brainstem on each side were measured and correlated with the results of auditory brainstem response for patients. Results: There was significantly higher mean diffusivity of cochlear nucleus, superior olivary nucleus, inferior colliculus, and auditory cortex of patients versus controls on both sides for all regions ( P = .001). The fractional anisotropy of cochlear nucleus, superior olivary nucleus, inferior colliculus, and auditory cortex of patients versus controls was significantly lower, with P values of, respectively, .001, .001, .003, and .001 on the right side and .001, .001, .003, and .001 on left side, respectively. Also, a negative correlation was found between the maximum bilirubin level and fractional anisotropy of the left superior olivary nucleus and inferior colliculus of both sides. A positive correlation was found between the mean diffusivity and auditory brainstem response wave latency of the right inferior colliculus and left cochlear nucleus. The fractional anisotropy and auditory brainstem response wave latency of the right superior olivary nucleus, left cochlear nucleus, and inferior colliculus of both sides were negatively correlated. Conclusion: Diffusion tensor imaging can detect microstructural changes in the auditory pathway in Crigler Najjar syndrome type I that can be correlated with auditory brainstem response.

Abstract:Objective To study the time-dependent changes and mechanisms of auditory cortex in prelingual sensorineural hearing loss,and to reveal the laterality of brain between hearing subjects and hearing-loss patients. Methods Two groups (9-12,19-22 years old) of hearing-loss patients and hearing subjects underwent thin-slice anatomical T1WI examination. Results There was no statistical difference between 9-12,19-22 years old and hearing about gray,white matter and total volume of bilateral HG,STG,and TL (P0.05),while no statistical difference was found between the two groups of ratio of gray to white matter about TL,whereas statistical difference of ratio of gray to white matter about HG was noticed between 9-12,19-22 years old hearing-loss and hearing,and 19-22 years old hearing-loss and hearing about STG (P0.05). The left volume of HG,STG,TL was statistically larger than that of right in 9-12,19-22 years old hearing-loss and hearing subjects (P0.05). Conclusion The ratio of gray to white matter about HG in hearing-loss is obviously lager than that of hearing patients. The left volume of HG,STG,TL is larger than that of right in hearing-loss and hearing subjects.
Microstructural changes of the vestibulocochlear nerve in patients with Ménière's disease using diffusion tensor imaging

Abstract:Objective: To evaluate the microstructural changes of the vestibulocochlear nerve in patients with Ménière's disease. Methods: A total of 26 subjects, 13 patients with MD and 13 healthy controls, underwent diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) on a 3T scanner. The independent sample t-test was used to compare the differences in fractional anisotropy (FA) and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) between the two groups. A Pearson correlation was used between DTI and the dizziness handicap inventory (DHI) scores. Results: There was a significant decrease in FA and an increase in ADC of the vestibulocochlear nerve in MD patients compared with healthy controls (P = 0.04, P = 0.001). FA had negative correlations with the DHI score (r = -0.62, P = 0.02) and DHI-functional score (r = -0.64, P = 0.02). Conclusion: These results are the first evidence of possible changes in the microstructure of the vestibulocochlear nerves in patients with MD. DTI is a potential technique for evaluating the vestibulocochlear nerve in patients with MD.

Abstract:Auditory processing disorder (APD) is a listening impairment that some school-aged children may experience despite having normal peripheral hearing. Recent resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has revealed an alteration in regional functional brain topology in children with APD. However, little is known about the structural organization in APD. We used diffusion MRI data to investigate the structural connectome of 58 children from 8 to 14 years old diagnosed with APD (n = 29) and children without hearing complaints (healthy controls, HC; n = 29). We investigated the rich-club organization and structural connection differences between groups. The APD group showed similar rich-club organization and edge-wise connection compared with the HC group. However, at the regional level, we observed increased average path length (APL) and betweenness centrality in the right inferior parietal lobule and inferior precentral gyrus, respectively, in the APD group. Only HCs demonstrated a positive association between APL and the listening-in-spatialized-noise-sentences task in the left orbital gyrus. In line with previous findings, the current results provide evidence for altered structural networks at the regional level in the APD group, suggesting the involvement of multimodal deficits and a role for structure-function alteration in the listening difficulties of children with APD.

Abstract:Network connectivity, as mapped by the whole brain connectome, plays a crucial role in regulating auditory function. Auditory deprivation such as unilateral hearing loss might alter structural network connectivity; however, these potential alterations are poorly understood. Thirty-seven acoustic neuroma patients with unilateral hearing loss (19 left-sided and 18 right-sided) and 19 healthy controls underwent diffusion-weighted and T1-weighted imaging to assess edge strength, node strength, and global efficiency of the structural connectome. Edge strength was estimated by pair-wise normalized streamline density from tractography and connectomics. Node strength and global efficiency were calculated through graph theory analysis of the connectome. Pure-tone audiometry and word recognition scores were used to correlate the degree and duration of unilateral hearing loss with node strength and global efficiency. We demonstrate significantly stronger edge strength and node strength through the visual network, weaker edge strength and node strength in the somatomotor network, and stronger global efficiency in the unilateral hearing loss patients. No discernible correlations were observed between the degree and duration of unilateral hearing loss and the measures of node strength or global efficiency. These findings contribute to our understanding of the role of structural connectivity in hearing by facilitating visual network upregulation and somatomotor network downregulation after unilateral hearing loss.
