Abstract:The medical profession is under attack financially, professionally, and morally, and must continue to fight to preserve itself, the BMA's chair of council has said.In a speech to the association's annual representative meeting in Belfast, Philip Banfield took aim at the government over industrial action, funding cuts, and the state of general practice. He also highlighted doctors' fears of speaking out about patient safety and announced a judicial review claim against the General Medical Council over the way it plans to regulate physician and anaesthesia associates, which the BMA says will lead to a dangerous blurring of lines for patients.Discussing the fractured relations between doctors and ministers, Banfield expressed his frustration that while consultants and specialist, associate specialist, and specialty (SAS) doctors in England have been able to secure pay deals, the dispute with junior doctors has now lasted 20 months without resolution.
