Abstract:We initiate the study of finite abelian groups that faithfully act on three-dimensional rationally connected varieties. We show that these groups can be naturally divided into three types. The first type consists of finite abelian groups that are products of two groups that belong to the Cremona group of rank 1 and 2, respectively; the second type consists of cyclic extensions of finite abelian groups acting on a K3 surface; the third type consists of groups that act on terminal Fano threefolds with empty anti-canonical linear system. We also establish a boundedness result for the groups of the second type.

Abstract:In this note we investigate the centraliser of a linearly growing element of (that is, a root of a Dehn twist automorphism), and show that it has a finite index subgroup mapping onto a direct product of certain "equivariant McCool groups" with kernel a finitely generated free abelian group. In particular, this allows us to show it is VF and hence finitely presented.

Abstract:We study the extension of homologically trivial symplectic or Hamiltonian cyclic actions to Hamiltonian circle actions on irrational ruled symplectic $4$-manifolds. On one hand, we construct symplectic involutions on minimal irrational ruled $4$-manifolds that cannot extend to a symplectic circle action even with a possibly different symplectic form. Higher dimensional examples are also constructed. On the other hand, for homologically trivial symplectic cyclic actions of any other order, we show that such an extension always exists. We also classify finite groups of symplecticmorphisms that acts trivially on the first homology group, and prove the non-extendability of the Klein $4$-group action to the three dimensional rotation group action motivated by the classification of finite groups of symplectomorphisms.

Abstract:Rationality specializes in families of surfaces, even with mild singularities. In this paper, we study the analogous question for the degree of irrationality. We prove a specialization result when the degree of irrationality on the generic fiber arises from the quotient by a group action.

Abstract:For any $k$-group scheme of finite type $G$ acting rationally on a $k$-variety $X$, if the action is generically free then the dimension of $\mathrm{Lie}(G)$ is upper bounded by the dimension of the variety. We show that this is the only obstruction when $k$ is a perfect field and $G$ is infinitesimal commutative trigonalizable. We also give necessary conditions to have faithful rational actions of infinitesimal commutative trigonalizable group schemes on varieties.

Abstract:Every action of a finite group scheme $G$ on a variety admits a projective equivariant model, but not necessarily a normal one. As a remedy, we introduce and explore the notion of $G$-normalization. In particular, every curve equipped with a $G$-action has a unique projective $G$-normal model, characterized by the invertibility of ideal sheaves of all orbits. Also, $G$-normal curves occur naturally in some questions on surfaces in positive characteristics.

Abstract:We prove that the moduli space of rational curves with cyclic action, constructed in our previous work, is realizable as a wonderful compactification of the complement of a hyperplane arrangement in a product of projective spaces. By proving a general result on such wonderful compactifications, we conclude that this moduli space is Chow-equivalent to an explicit toric variety (whose fan can be understood as a tropical version of the moduli space), from which a computation of its Chow ring follows.

Abstract:Let p be a prime. In this paper we provide a lower bound for the number of almost p-rational characters of degree coprime to p in the principal p-block of a finite group of order divisible by p. We further describe the p-local structure of the groups for which the above-mentioned bound is sharp.

Abstract:Let u be a word over the positive integers. Motivated in part by a question from representation theory, we study the centralizer set of u which is C(u) = {w | uw is Knuth-equivalent to wu}. In particular, we give various necessary conditions for w to be in C(u). We also characterize C(u) when u has few letters, when it has a single repeated entry, or when it is a certain type of decreasing sequence. We consider c_{n,m}(u), the number of w in C(u) of length n with max w at most m. We prove that for |u| = 1 the value of this function depends only on the relative sizes of u and m and not on their actual values. And for various u we use Stanley's theory of poset partitions to show that, for fixed n, c_{n,m}(u) is a polynomial in m with certain degree and leading coefficient. We end with various conjectures and directions for further research.

Abstract:We study meromorphic actions of unipotent complex Lie groups on compact K\"ahler manifolds using moment map techniques. We introduce natural stability conditions and show that sets of semistable points are Zariski-open and admit geometric quotients that carry compactifiable K\"ahler structures obtained by symplectic reduction. The relation of our complex-analytic theory to the work of Doran--Kirwan regarding the Geometric Invariant Theory of unipotent group actions on projective varieties is discussed in detail.
Centralizers of Lie Algebras Associated to the Descending Central Series of Certain Poly-Free Groups

Abstract:Poly-free groups are constructed as iterated semidirect products of free groups. The class of poly-free groups includes the classical pure braid groups, fundamental groups of fiber-type hyperplane arrangements, and certain subgroups of the automorphism groups of free groups. The purpose of this article is to compute centralizers of certain natural Lie subalgebras of the Lie algebra obtained from the descending central series of poly-free groups G including some of the geometrically interesting classes of groups mentioned above. The main results here extend results of Cohen and Prassidis for such groups. These results imply that a homomorphism out of G is faithful, essentially, if it is faithful when restricted to the level of Lie algebras obtained from the descending central series for the product F x Z, where F is the "top" free group in the semidirect products of free groups and Z is the center of G. The arguments use a mixture of homological, and Lie algebraic methods applied to certain choices of extensions. The limitations of these methods are illustrated using the "poison groups" of Formanek and Procesi, poly-free groups whose Lie algebras do not have certain properties considered here.

Abstract:In 1982, Durnberger proved that every connected Cayley graph of a finite group with a commutator subgroup of prime order contains a hamiltonian cycle. In this paper, we extend this result to the infinite case. Additionally, we generalize this result to a broader class of infinite graphs $X$, where the automorphism group of $X$ contains a transitive subgroup $G$ with a cyclic commutator subgroup of prime order.

Abstract:We prove that centralisers of elements in [finitely generated free]-by-cyclic groups are computable. As a corollary, given two conjugate elements in a [finitely generated free]-by-cyclic group, the set of conjugators can be computed and the conjugacy problem with context-free constraints is decidable. We pose several problems arising naturally from this work.

Abstract:The paper concerns the automorphism groups of Cayley graphs over cyclic groups which have a rational spectrum (rational circulant graphs for short). With the aid of the techniques of Schur rings it is shown that the problem is equivalent to consider the automorphism groups of orthogonal group block structures of cyclic groups. Using this observation, the required groups are expressed in terms of generalized wreath products of symmetric groups.

Abstract:We study smooth varieties of Picard number one admitting a special dominating family of rational curves and an equalized $\mathbb{C}^*$-action. Abstract:We show that every finite abelian group $G$ occurs as the group of rational points of an ordinary abelian variety over $\mathbb{F}_2$, $\mathbb{F}_3$ and $\mathbb{F}_5$. We produce partial results for abelian varieties over a general finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$. In particular, we show that certain abelian groups cannot occur as groups of rational points of abelian varieties over $\mathbb{F}_q$ when $q$ is large. Finally, we show that every finite cyclic group arises as the group of rational points of infinitely many simple abelian varieties over $\mathbb{F}_2$.
