Abstract:Recently, the use of tetra n-butylammonium bromide (TBAB) semiclathrate for hydrate-based carbon dioxide capture has received much attention due to its high thermodynamic stability, availability, and its environmentally friendly properties. In this work, the solubility of carbon dioxide and nitrogen in aqueous solutions of TBAB in mass fractions of 0.00, 0.05, 0.20, and 0.405 over a temperature range from 283.1 to 303.1 K and pressures up to 5.2 MPa have been reported. The result showed that the TBAB solution showed both salting-in and salting-out effects on the solubility of CO2, depending on the salt concentration and temperature. At low temperatures (288.1 and 293.1 K) in three concentrations, the solubility was lower compared to pure water; however, as the temperature and the concentration increased simultaneously, the solubility of carbon dioxide in the TBAB solution increased. The presence of TBAB in water increased the solubility of N2 compared to pure water with increasing temperature, and this effect was more visible at higher concentrations. Two correlations were proposed to predict Henry’s constant of carbon dioxide and nitrogen as a function of temperature and TBAB concentration. The average absolute relative errors between the experimental data and the correlations were approximately 2.4 and 4.5% for CO2 and N2, respectively. Also, the presented correlations indicated good coverage of the data in the literature.
