Abstract:Constructing novel surface microstructures for photocatalytic materials could significantly enhance the photocatalytic hydrogen production rate from water splitting. In this work, novel 2D/3D structured CuCo2S4/CdIn2S4 p-n heterojunction photocatalysts for water splitting were successfully prepared by a solvothermal method. The coupling of a 2D CuCo2S4 nanoplate on the surface of 3D flower-like CdIn2S4 microspheres has strengthened the visible light absorption and promoted the charge separation efficiency due to their tight contacting area. The obtained CuCo2S4/CdIn2S4 (CSCIS-2) photocatalyst exhibited a hydrogen production rate of 1320 mu mol g(-1) h(-1), which was fivefold of that for pure CdIn2S4. Additionally, cyclic tests demonstrated improved photoactivity stability of the samples. A series of photoelectrochemical characterizations confirmed the effective suppression of charge carrier recombination in CuCo2S4/CdIn2S4 composite catalysts. Finally, a rational photocatalytic mechanism was proposed based on the semiconductor band theory. This work contributes to the enrichment of sulfide-based research and applications in photocatalysis.

Abstract:The development of transition-metal sulfides, such as nickel sulfides (e.g., Ni3S2), as catalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction is one potential solution to environmental pollution and energy crisis. However, its limited utilization of visible light and high recombination ratio of photoinduced electron–hole pairs suppress its photocatalytic activity. The key issue in improving photocatalytic efficiency lies in fabricating a p–n heterojunction with efficient interfacial contact and broadband absorption. Here, we developed a method for fabricating an interlaced Ni3S2/MoS2 heterostructure with close interfacial contact. In our fabrication approach, a porous Ni3S2 scaffold is prepared by chemical vapor deposition and a hydrothermal method is used to prepare a Ni3S2/MoS2 photocatalyst with close interfacial contact. The numerous interfaces of the interlaced Ni3S2/MoS2 heterostructures promote effective electron–hole pair separation and facilitate electron transfer. Meanwhile, the hybrid Ni3S2/MoS2 nanostructures favor broadband absorption extending from 300 to 800 nm. As a result, the hybrid Ni3S2/MoS2 exhibits a remarkable rate of hydrogen evolution (540.75 μmol g−1 h−1), which is 5.71 and 3.89 times greater than those of pure Ni3S2 and MoS2, respectively, under otherwise identical conditions. The results of this work are significant for developing promising transition-metal sulfide heterostructures in the field of hydrogen evolution by photocatalytic water splitting.
Synergistic effect of interstitial phosphorus doping and MoS2 modification over Zn0.3Cd0.7S for efficient photocatalytic H2 production

Abstract:ZnxCd1-xS photocatalysts have been widely investigated due to their diverse morphologies, suitable band gaps/band edge positions, and high electronic mobility. However, the sluggish charge separation and severe charge recombination impede the application of ZnxCd1-xS for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Herein, doping of phosphorus (P) atoms into Zn0.3Cd0.7S has been implemented to elevate S vacancies concentration as well as tune its Fermi level to be located near the impurity level of S vacancies, prolonging the lifetime of photogenerated electrons. Moreover, P doping induces a hybridized state in the bandgap, leading to an imbalanced charge distribution and a localized built-in electric field for effective separation of photogenerated charge carriers. Further construction of intimate heterojunctions between P-Zn0.3Cd0.7S and MoS2 accelerates surface redox reaction. Benefiting from the above merits, 1 % MoS2/P-Zn0.3Cd0.7S exhibits a high hydrogen production rate of 30.65 mmol·g-1·h-1 with AQE of 22.22 % under monochromatic light at 370 nm, exceeding most ZnxCd1-xS based photocatalysts reported so far. This work opens avenues to fabricate examplary photocatalysts for solar energy conversion and beyond.
Efficient solar-light photocatalytic H2 evolution of Mn0.5Cd0.5S coupling with S,N-codoped carbon

Abstract:The low-cost and highly-efficient photocatalysts for solar-light induced water splitting had drawn great attention to develop the renewable hydrogen economy. To enhance the solar-light driven H2 evolution of Mn0.5Cd0.5S, Mn0.5Cd0.5S was modified by S,N-codoped carbon (3-MCS/SN-C) via the in-situ sulfurization at high temperature. In contrast with Mn0.5Cd0.5S (11.13 mmol g−1 h−1) and S-doped g-C3N4 (0.35 mmol g−1 h−1), the optimal 3-MCS/SN-C with a mass ratio of Mn0.5Cd0.5S to S,N-codoped carbon of 1:3 exhibited the best H2 evolution rate of 27.58 mmol g−1 h−1 and an apparent quantum yield of 27.43% at 400 nm. The photo-corrosion induced to the decreased H2 evolution capacity of 3-MCS/SN-C from 131.13 to 126.52 mmol g−1 after five cycles of 5 h. S,N-codoped carbon could efficiently capture visible light and absorb the photons, leading to the efficient transformation and separation of photo-generated carriers at the junction interface between Mn0.5Cd0.5S and S,N-codoped carbon.

Abstract:Coherent twin boundaries in particulate chalcogenide photocatalysts can induce intrinsic homojunctions, which have been demonstrated to be effective toward solar hydrogen production from water. However, limited success up to date has been achieved on pure water splitting because of the self-oxidation of the chalcogenide photocatalyst. Herein, we report the efficient pure water splitting for simultaneous H2 and H2O2 production under visible light irradiation over a Cd0.5Zn0.5S (CZS) nanotwin photocatalyst. The success relies on the formation of unique phosphorus bridges at the surface of the photocatalyst that couples bulk twin boundaries and surface red phosphorus (RP) for efficient charge separation and restricted photocorrosion via a two-electron Z-scheme mechanism. The optimal photocatalyst exhibited 5.2 times increased H2 evolution rate compared to the pristine CZS and good stability as well. This work opens a door toward chalcogenide photocatalyst design for efficient pure water splitting by coupling twin nanostructures with surface P doping and heterojunction construction.

Subsequently, this nano MnCdS solid solution was anchored on the surface of truncated octahedral Cu2O through a simple hydrothermal process, forming an S-scheme heterojunction at the interface between MnCdS and Cu2O. Equilibrating the Fermi level at the MnCdS/Cu2O heterojunction led to spontaneous diffusion of electrons in MnCdS to Cu2O, generating an internal electric field that drove the recombination of electrons in the conduction band (CB) of Cu2O and holes in the valence band (VB) of MnCdS. Consequently, this process preserved the powerful photogenerated electrons in the CB of MnCdS, facilitating robust photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. The MnCdS/Cu2O exhibited a photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate of 66.3 mmol g−1 h−1, which was 3.4- and 54.3-times higher than that of MnCdS (19.4 mmol g−1 h−1) and Cu2O (1.2 mmol g−1 h−1), respectively. This study elucidates advanced S-scheme heterojunction catalyst architectures for photocatalytic hydrogen production.

Strong electron coupling effect of Zn-vacancy engineered S-scheme MnCdS/ZnS heterojunction derived from Metal-organic frameworks for highly efficient photocatalytic overall water splitting

Abstract:Designing efficient sulfide photocatalysts for the simultaneous split water into H2 and O2 continue to be an arduous challenge. Herein, a Zn-vacancy mediated S-scheme MnCdS/ZnS-VZn heterojunction derived from MnCdS/MOF-5 via in-situ vulcanization of MOF-5 in a new-fashioned sacrificial reagent of Na2S/NaH2PO2 was fabricated. The presence of Zn vacancy (VZn) was certified by TEM, XPS, EPR and PL results, which result in a new defect level in the band structure of ZnS. The S-scheme charge transfer path was established between MnCdS and ZnS-VZn by VZn vacancies, and the photocorrosion is depressed efficiently and a dramatic rise occurs on photocatalytic performance. The strong electron coupling effect of S-scheme heterojunction mechanism was confirmed via in-situ XPS, SPV, work function, and radicals test by EPR. The band gap and density of state about ZnS-VZn and MnCdS are also calculated by the DFT. In HER semi-reaction, the strongest photocatalytic hydrogen generation rate of 20 % MnCdS/ZnS-VZn is 394.4 μmol/h with a splendid apparent quantum efficiency of 16.43 % at 420 nm, and the turnover number (TON) is 98.6. The hydrogen production rate of 20 % MnCdS/ZnS-VZn is drastically advanced by 123.25 times in contrast to the unadorned ZnS-VZn. And superior photostability is also obtained. Prominently, the high-efficiency and steady photocatalytic overall water splitting rates of 5.7μmol/h (H2) and 3.0μmol/h (O2) were achieved over 20 % MnCdS/ZnS-VZn with 1 %wt Pt and 5 %wt Co3O4 nanorod as cocatalysts, and the photocatalytic stability was excellent. This research supplies neoteric insights for designing of highly efficient VZn-mediated S-scheme sulfide photocatalysts to achieve pure water overall splitting with superior photocatalytic activity.
Smart Assembly of Sulfide Heterojunction Photocatalysts with Well-Defined Interfaces for Direct Z-Scheme Water Splitting under Visible Light

Abstract:A Z-scheme photocatalytic water-splitting system is an effective approach to integrate the advantages both hydrogen- and oxygen-evolution photocatalysts. The interfacial properties of the heterojunctions have a great influence on the efficiency through the crystal orientation and the charge kinetics. In this study, a general chemical vapor deposition process and a gentle cation-exchange method were combined to assemble Z-scheme photocatalysts between CdS and MnS. As a result of the well-defined heterojunction interfaces and distinctive structural benefits, without cocatalysts, the 1 D CdS/MnS hybrid photocatalyst exhibited a significantly increased photocatalytic H2 evolution rate of 1595 μmol h-1 g-1 (apparent quantum efficiency of 22.6 % at λ=420 nm), which is over 10.5 times higher than that of CdS. Moreover, a better photocatalytic stability is demonstrated over particulate (42 h cycling measurement) and photoelectrochemical (3000 min continuous measurement) systems. Overall, this work provides a unique experimental insight into high-quality heterojunction interface design and new Z-scheme photocatalyst synthesis.
Boosting CdS Photocatalytic Activity for Hydrogen Evolution in Formic Acid Solution by P Doping and MoS2 Photodeposition

Abstract:Formic acid is an appealing hydrogen storage material. In order to rapidly produce hydrogen from formic acid under relatively mild conditions, high-efficiency and stable photocatalytic systems are of great significance to prompt hydrogen (H2) evolution from formic acid. In this paper, an efficient and stable photocatalytic system (CdS/P/MoS2) for H2 production from formic acid is successfully constructed by elemental P doping of CdS nanorods combining with in situ photodeposition of MoS2. In this system, P doping reduces the band gap of CdS for enhanced light absorption, as well as promoting the separation of photogenerated charge carriers. More importantly, MoS2 nanoparticles decorated on P-doped CdS nanorods can play as noble-metal-free cocatalysts, which increase the light adsorption, facilitate the charge transfer and effectively accelerate the hydrogen evolution reaction. Consequently, the apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) of the designed CdS/P/MoS2 is up to 6.39% at 420 nm, while the H2 evolution rate is boosted to 68.89 mmol·g−1·h−1, which is 10 times higher than that of pristine CdS. This study could provide an alternative strategy for the development of competitive CdS-based photocatalysts as well as noble-metal-free photocatalytic systems toward efficient hydrogen production.

Abstract:Developing high-efficiency photocatalysts for water decomposition is one of the major challenges in converting solar energy to chemical energy. In this paper, Ni(OH)2 modified Mn0.5Cd0.5S solid solution without the use of precious metals is successfully synthesized via hydrothermal method followed by precipitation, the photocatalytic activity for hydrogen evolution and stability of composite samples present significant improvement with respect to the pristine Mn0.5Cd0.5S. These improvements are attributed to that Mn0.5Cd0.5S CB potential (−0.7 V vs. NHE) is more negative than the potential of Ni2+/Ni (−0.23 V vs. NHE), which promotes the transfer of photo-generated electrons from Mn0.5Cd0.5S CB to Ni(OH)2 for H2 production as well as partial reduction of Ni2+ to Ni0, leaving VB holes to oxidize the sacrificial reagents. The metal Ni atoms with conductivity and Ni(OH)2 nanoparticles not only boost the segregation and transfer of photo-induced carriers but also act as water-reduction promoter, thereby promoting the photocatalytic activity for hydrogen release. A novel visible light responsive MnxCd1-xS-based photocatalytic material promising for practical applications is provided in this subject.

Abstract:A series of Mn2+ doped CdS photocatalysts were prepared by a co-precipitation method and characterized by XRD, DRS, TEM, and XPS techniques. While the band gap, crystal phase and the morphology of CdS nanocrystal were not found to be affected noticeably by Mn2+ doping, there was an optimal Mn2+ doping content of wt 0.5% where the hydrogen production was more than doubled compared to pure CdS. Calculations of density functional theory (DFT) with plane waves and pseudopotentials were used to characterize the doping effect of Mn in cubic CdS. It is assumed that Mn2+ serving as shallow trapping sites can separate e−/h+ pairs at surface of nanosized CdS, so as to greatly reduce their surface recombination and which in turn leads to improved hydrogen yield.
Noble-metal-free Chalcogenide Nanotwins for Efficient and Stable Photocatalytic Pure Water Splitting by Surface Phosphorization and Cocatalyst Modification

Abstract:Chalcogenide photocatalysts are considered excellent candidates for photocatalytic water splitting because of their narrow bandgaps enabling utilization of visible light. However, severe self-oxidation of sulfide ions during water oxidation greatly restricts their application toward pure water splitting. Herein, we report the synthesis of a near-surface P-doped Cd0.5Zn0.5S (CZS) nanotwin photocatalyst, co-modified by red phosphorus (RP) and transition metal phosphides (TMPs, including FeP, Ni2P, and Co2P) by a one-step phosphorization method that enables efficient and stable pure water splitting. We demonstrate that homogenous phosphorus bridges formed from CZS to both RP and TMP because of near-surface P doping. These unique bridges enable effective charge transfer from RP to CZS and then to TMP via a two-electron Z-scheme mechanism. Significantly, the RP for photogenerated holes capture shows great corrosion-resistance during water oxidation, with simultaneous production of H2O2, while TMP promotes H2 evolution. The optimal CZS-P-Co2P shows a H2 evolution rate of 801.3 mmol/h/g for visible-light-driven pure water splitting, with an apparent quantum of 7.46% at 400 nm, which are among the highest re-ported values over chalcogenide photocatalysts. General In Situ Photoactivation Route with IPCE over 80% toward CdS Photoanodes for Photoelectrochemical Applications

Abstract:Cost-effective photoanodes with remarkable electronic properties are highly demanded for practical photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting. The ability to manipulate the surface carrier separation and recombination is pivotal for achieving high PEC performance for water splitting. Here, a facile and economical approach is reported for substantially improving the surface charge separation property of CdS photoanodes through in situ photoactivation, which significantly reduces surface charge recombination through the formation of thiosulfate ion which is favorable to the transfer of photogenerated holes and a uniform nanoporous morphology via the dissolving Cd2+ with phosphate ions on the surface of CdS. The resulting CdS electrodes through scalable particle transfer method exhibit nearly tripled photocurrents, with an incident-photon-to-current conversion efficiency (IPCE) at 480 nm exceeding 80% at 0.6 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE). And the CdS thin films prepared from chemical bath deposition display quadrupled photocurrents after the stir and PEC activation, with an IPCE of 91.7% at 455 nm and 0.6 V versus RHE. With the suppression of photocorrosion in alkaline borate buffer, the activated photoanodes show great stability for solar hydrogen production at the sacrifice of sulfite. This work brings insights into the design of nanoporous metal sulfide semiconductors for solar water splitting.

Efficient Schottky heterojunctions of CoP nanoparticles decorated Mn-doped CdS nanorods for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution by water splitting

Abstract:This study reports novel noble-metal-free photocatalytic composites containing CoP nanoparticles modified Mn-doped CdS (MCS) nanorods for producing H 2 by water splitting. MCS nanorods are prepared with various molar ratios of Cd to Mn via a solvothermal method. Compared to other MCS samples, the MCS-8:3 sample with exceptional crystallinity and shorter radial transfer paths displays the highest H 2 production rate, which is used for further modification. To mitigate the recombination of electrons and holes, CoP nanoparticles owning metallic properties are deposited onto the surface of MCS-8:3 as cocatalysts using a deposition–phosphorization method. The influence of the amounts of CoP on the morphology and H 2 production rates was investigated. The testing results indicate that MCS/CoP-7% exhibits significantly enhanced photocatalytic H 2 production rate of 40.5 mmol/g/h. This value is 4.7 times more than that of MCS-8:3, which is higher than most of the reported MCS-based catalysts. The optical and electrochemical experiments reveal that the established heterojunctions between MCS and CoP enable to improve the average charge lifetime, the separation and transfer of photogenerated charge. Furthermore, the band structures of the composites are also estimated. Combining with the XPS results and band structure, the enhanced photocatalytic performances can be attributed to the Schottky heterojunctions with the efficient electron-transfer pathway between MCS and CoP are proposed.

Abstract:Heterojunctions photocatalysts play a crucial role in achieving high solar-hydrogen conversion efficiency. In this work, we mainly focus on the charge transfer dynamics and pathways for sulfides-based Schottky junctions in the photocatalytic water splitting process to clarify the mechanism of heterostructures photocatalysis. Sulfides-based Schottky junctions (CdS/CoP and CdS/1T-MoS2) were successfully constructed for photocatalytic water splitting. Because of the higher work function of CdS than that of CoP and 1T-MoS2, the direction of the built-in electric field is from CoP or 1T-MoS2 to semiconductor. Therefore, CoP and 1T-MoS2 can act as electrons acceptors to accelerate the transfer of photo-generated electron on the surface of CdS, thus improving the charge utilization efficiency. Meanwhile, CoP and 1T-MoS2 as active sites can also promote the water dissociation and lower the H+ reduction overpotential, thus contributing to the excellent photocatalytic hydrogen production activity (23.59 mmol·h-1·g-1 and 1195.8 mol·h-1·g-1 for CdS/CoP and CdS/1T-MoS2).
P-doped Co3S4/NiS2 heterostructures embedded in N-doped carbon nanoboxes: Synergistical electronic structure regulation for overall water splitting

Abstract:Water splitting using transition metal sulfides as electrocatalysts has gained considerable attention in the field of renewable energy. However, their electrocatalytic activity is often hindered by unfavorable free energies of adsorbed hydrogen and oxygen-containing intermediates. Herein, phosphorus (P)-doped Co3S4/NiS2 heterostructures embedded in N-doped carbon nanoboxes were rationally synthesized via a pyrolysis-sulfidation-phosphorization strategy. The hollow structure of the carbon matrix and the nanoparticles contained within it not only result in a high specific surface area, but also protects them from corrosion and acts as a conductive pathway for efficient electron transfer. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that the introduction of P dopants improves the conductivity of NiS2 and Co3S4, promotes the charge transfer process, and creates new electrocatalytic sites. Additionally, the NiS2-Co3S4 heterojunctions can enhance the adsorption efficiency of hydrogen intermediates (H*) and lower the energy barrier of water splitting via a synergistic effect with P-doping. These characteristics collectively enable the titled catalyst to exhibit excellent electrocatalytic activity for water splitting in alkaline medium, requiring only small overpotentials of 150 and 257 mV to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm-2 for hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions, respectively. This work sheds light on the design and optimization of efficient electrocatalysts for water splitting, with potential implications for renewable energy production.

Abstract:Developing a visible light photocatalysts for hydrogen (H2) production to replacing fossil fuels is a huge challenge. Herein, one-dimensional MnxCd1-xS@D-MoSeyS2-y heterostructure was prepared for improving the hydrogen generation. The molar ratio of Mn to Cd in MnxCd1-xS solid solution was adjusted, which effectively enhances the photocatalytic H2 evolution efficiency. MoSeyS2-y with defects (D-MoSeyS2-y) was synthesized by solvothermal method during the photocatalytic process as cocatalyst, which wrapping on the MnxCd1-xS solid solution. MnxCd1-xS@D-MoSeyS2-y shows improved photocatalytic H2 evolution activity, which was endowed by suitable energy band structure, exposure of active sites, high carrier concentration and fast electrons transfer. The highest photocatalytic H2 evolution rate of sample among prepared MnxCd1-xS@D-MoSeyS2-y is 12.46 mmol/g/h, which is equivalent to 37 times that of CdS. This present study offers a insight to the preparation of CdS-based photocatalysts.
