Abstract:We obtain the asymptotic formulas for the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the Sturm-Liouville operators with general regular boundary conditions. Using these formulas, we find sufficient conditions on the potential q such that the root functions of these operators do not form a Riesz basis.

Abstract:We consider compact metric graphs with an arbitrary self adjoint realisation of the differential Laplacian. After discussing spectral properties of Laplacians, we prove several versions of trace formulae, relating Laplace spectra to sums over periodic orbits on the graph. This includes trace formulae with, respectively, absolutely and conditionally convergent periodic orbit sums; the convergence depending on properties of the test functions used. We also prove a trace formula for the heat kernel and provide small-$t$ asymptotics for the trace of the heat kernel.

Trace formula for linear Hamiltonian systems with its applications to elliptic Lagrangian solutions

Abstract:In the present paper, we build up trace formulas for both the linear Hamiltonian systems and Sturm-Liouville systems. The formula connects the monodromy matrix of a symmetric periodic orbit with the infinite sum of eigenvalues of the Hessian of the action functional. A natural application is to study the non-degeneracy of linear Hamiltonian systems. Precisely, by the trace formula, we can give an estimation for the upper bound such that the non-degeneracy preserves. Moreover, we could estimate the relative Morse index by the trace formula. Consequently, a series of new stability criteria for the symmetric periodic orbits is given. As a concrete application, the trace formula is used to study the linear stability of elliptic Lagrangian solutions of the classical planar three-body problem. It is well known that the linear stability of elliptic Lagrangian solutions depends on the mass parameter $\bb=27(m_1m_2+m_2m_3+m_3m_1)/(m_1+m_2+m_3)^2\in [0,9]$ and the eccentricity $e\in [0,1)$. Based on the trace formula, we estimate the stable region and hyperbolic region of the elliptic Lagranian solutions.

Abstract:We present a complete description on the spectrum and eigenfunctions of the following two point boundary value problem $$(p(x)f')'-(q(x)-\lambda r(x))f=0\;, \;\; 0<x<L \quad ; \quad f'(0)=(\alpha_{1} \lambda + \alpha_{2}) f(0) \quad ; \quad f'(L)=(\beta_{1}\lambda -\beta_{2})f(L), $$ where $\lambda$ and $\alpha_{i}, \beta_{i}$ are spectral and physical parameters. Our survey is focused mainly in the case $\alpha_{1}>0$ and $\beta_{1}<0$, where neither self adjoint operator theorems on Hilbert spaces nor Sturm's comparison results can be used directly. We describe the spectrum and the oscillatory results of the eigenfunctions from a geometrical approach, using a function related to the Prüfer angle. The proofs of the asymptotic results of the eigenvalues and separation theorem of the eigenfunctions are developed through classical second order differential equation tools. Finally, the results on the spectrum of the equation are used for the study of the linear instability of a simple model for the fingering phenomenon on the flooding oil recovery process.

Abstract:In this work we analyze the spectral $\zeta$-function associated with the self-adjoint extensions, $T_{A,B}$, of quasi-regular Sturm--Liouville operators that are bounded from below. By utilizing the Green's function formalism, we find the characteristic function which implicitly provides the eigenvalues associated with a given self-adjoint extension $T_{A,B}$. The characteristic function is then employed to construct a contour integral representation for the spectral $\zeta$-function of $T_{A,B}$. By assuming a general form for the asymptotic expansion of the characteristic function, we describe the analytic continuation of the $\zeta$-function to a larger region of the complex plane. We also present a method for computing the value of the spectral $\zeta$-function of $T_{A,B}$ at all positive integers. We provide two examples to illustrate the methods developed in the paper: the generalized Bessel and Legendre operators. We show that in the case of the generalized Bessel operator, the spectral $\zeta$-function develops a branch point at the origin, while in the case of the Legendre operator it presents, more remarkably, branch points at every nonpositive integer value of $s$.

Abstract:This paper deals with the Sturm-Liouville problem that feature distribution potential, polynomial dependence on the spectral parameter in the first boundary condition, and analytical dependence, in the second one. We study an inverse spectral problem that consists in the recovery of the potential and the polynomials from some part of the spectrum. We for the first time prove local solvability and stability for this type of inverse problems. Furthermore, the necessary and sufficient conditions on the given subspectrum for the uniqueness of solution are found, and a reconstruction procedure is developed. Our main results can be applied to a variety of partial inverse problems. This is illustrated by an example of the Hochstadt-Lieberman-type problem with polynomial dependence on the spectral parameter in the both boundary conditions.

Abstract:The self-adjoint matrix Sturm-Liouville operator on a finite interval with a boundary condition in the general form is studied. We obtain asymptotic formulas for the eigenvalues and the weight matrices of the considered operator. These spectral characteristics play an important role in the inverse spectral theory. Our technique is based on analysis of analytic functions and on the contour integration in the complex plane of the spectral parameter. In addition, we adapt the obtained asymptotic formulas to the Sturm-Liouville operators on a star-shaped graph with two different types of matching conditions.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove a trace regularity theorem for the solutions of general linear partial differential equations with smooth coefficients. Our result shows that by imposing additional microlocal smoothness along certain directions, the trace of the solution on a codimension-one hypersurface will be just as regular as the solution itself. The proof is based on the Hormander-Nirenberg pseudo-differential cut-off technique and a 'fattening' lemma, together with standard energy estimates.

Abstract:In this study, we employ new results on the semi‐inner product, the adjoint operator, and the Schatten class of operators on a separable Banach space, which allow us to investigate a differential operator with unbounded operator‐valued coefficients. Specifically, we derive an asymptotic formula for the second regularized trace based on the asymptotic and spectral properties of the extended operator. For this purpose, we use the theory of continuous dense embeddings and known results regarding the regularized trace in Hilbert space. We conclude our paper by providing examples that support our findings.

The proof method is constructive. It is based on the reduction of the inverse problem to a linear equation in the Banach space of bounded infinite sequences. We prove that, under a small perturbation of the spectral data, the main equation of the inverse problem remains uniquely solvable. Furthermore, we derive new reconstruction formulas for obtaining the problem coefficients from the solution of the main equation and get stability estimates for the recovered coefficients.

Abstract:abstract: In this paper we derive refined Petersson/Kuznetsov trace formulae with prescribed local ramifications. The spectral side of these formulae \yh{picks out newforms whose associated local components come from specific sub-families of representations of given level, and are much shorter compared with the classical versions.} We use them to study the first moment and the subconvexity bound of certain Rankin-Selberg $L$-function in a hybrid setting, \yh{obtaining Weyl bound in a wider range compared to previous works}.

Abstract:In this research, a trace regularity theorem on a time-like surface is proved for the solution of a multidimensional linear acoustic wave equation with nonsmooth coefficients. Our theorem indicates that with microlocal restrictions against tangential oscillations in the coefficients, the boundary value is just as regular as the solution, in particular as regular as the coefficients allow.

Abstract:This paper establishes trace-formulae for a class of operators defined in terms of the functional calculus for the Laplace operator on divergence-free vector fields with relative and absolute boundary conditions on Lipschitz domains in $\mathbb{R}^3$. Spectral and scattering theory of the absolute and relative Laplacian is equivalent to the spectral analysis and scattering theory for Maxwell equations. The trace-formulae allow for unbounded functions in the functional calculus that are not admissible in the Birman-Krein formula. In special cases the trace-formula reduces to a determinant formula for the Casimir energy that is being used in the physics literature for the computation of the Casimir energy for objects with metallic boundary conditions. Our theorems justify these formulae in the case of electromagnetic scattering on Lipschitz domains, give a rigorous meaning to them as the trace of certain trace-class operators, and clarifies the function spaces on which the determinants need to be taken.
