Abstract:The transverse ultrasonic vibration-assisted forming technology has been widely investigated in the past decades. However, the research on transverse ultrasonic vibration-assisted compression Ti2AlNb-based alloy has not been reported. In this work, the samples with different grain sizes were obtained by vacuum heat treatment on the initial Ti2AlNb-based alloy. The ultrasonic-assisted compression test was performed on samples with different grain sizes. The Hall–Petch model is applied based on the ultrasonic softening phenomenon of different grain sizes. The electron back-scattered diffraction and transmission electron microscopy was employed to analyze the microstructural evolution before and after deformation to reveal the softening mechanism. An ultrasound energy model for the Hall–Petch effect is proposed based on the ultrasound-assisted compression test. The results show that the smaller the grain size, the more significantly decreased the yield strength. When the grain size was 118 μm, the yield strength was reduced by 12.4%. The Hall–Petch model has good compatibility with the experimental result. The microstructure results indicate that reduced kernel average misorientation value, low-angle grain boundary (LAGB), and dislocation density after ultrasound-assisted compression furtherly explain that the ultrasound energy could promote the movement of dislocations and reduce dislocation density with the help of the refined Hall–Petch model.
