Abstract:Soliton "molecules", i.e., bound states of two or several solitons, represent a fundamental concept, which manifests itself in various nonlinear systems. They are dynamically similar to chemical molecules, attracting great interest to fundamental studies and offering potential applications (such as multilevel encoding of optical data). Here, the study demonstrates a novel dichromatic soliton-molecule compounds (DSMC) built as a hybrid bound state of multiple bound soliton pulses carried by two wavelengths in a fiber laser. The DSMCs are maintained by two different binding mechanisms, viz., the self-phase modulation (SPM) interaction between temporal solitons at the same wavelength, mediated by their tails, and the cross-phase modulation (XPM) interaction between solitons at different wavelengths. They also exhibit unique temporal and spectral vibration profiles. Both static DSMCs and ones with robust internal vibrations are generated experimentally in the fiber laser, and numerically as solutions of the corresponding dissipative nonlinear model. The findings reported here expand the concept of soliton molecules and further promote their similarity to chemical molecules. Novel dichromatic soliton-molecule compounds that are built as hybrid bound states of multiple solitons carried by two different optical wavelengths are demonstrated in mode-locked fiber lasers. The vibration dynamics of DSMCs are experimental and theoretically revealed, suggesting directions for further work in nonlinear fiber optics, as well as using soliton bound states for emulation of molecular dynamics. image

Abstract:Abstract We experimentally investigated the soliton collisions between soliton molecules and deuterogenic solitons spontaneously generated on the continuous wave (cw) noise background in an ultrafast erbium-doped fiber laser mode locked with MoS2 saturable absorber (SA). The dynamics of the soliton collisions were observed using the time-stretch dispersion Fourier transform technique. The noise-induced deuterogenic solitons first undergo spectral broadening and wavelength shifting, then collide successively with a soliton molecule and eventually vanish. Within the simple collision framework, the spectral-temporal dynamics of soliton collision would help to unveil the self-stabilization mechanism of the soliton molecules in consideration of dispersive wave shedding. This nonlinear dynamics is similar to the soliton rain, except that complex condensed soliton phase is substituted with a soliton molecule.

Abstract:Bound states of solitons ("molecules") occur in various settings, playing an important role in the operation of fiber lasers, optical emulation, encoding, and communications. Soliton interactions are generally related to breathing dynamics in nonlinear dissipative systems, and maintain potential applications in spectroscopy. In the present work, dichromatic breather molecules (DBMs) are created in a synchronized mode-locked fiber laser. Real-time delay-shifting interference spectra are measured to display the temporal evolution of the DBMs, that cannot be observed by means of the usual real-time spectroscopy. As a result, robust out-of-phase vibrations are found as a typical intrinsic mode of DBMs. The same bound states are produced numerically in the framework of a model combining equations for the population inversion in the mode-locked laser and cross-phase-modulation-coupled complex Ginzburg-Landau equations for amplitudes of the optical fields in the fiber segments of the laser cavity. The results demonstrate that the Q-switching instability induces the onset of breathing oscillations. The findings offer new possibilities for the design of various regimes of the operation of ultrafast lasers.

Abstract:Self-assembly of optical solitons propagating in nonlinear dissipative systems spreads the concept of soliton molecules. Assisted with the real-time spectral interferometry, plentiful internal dynamics has been probed within the multi-pulse patterns, emphasizing the striking analogies with the matter molecules. Therefrom, these particle-like behaviors would yield more intriguing landscapes towards the extended degrees of freedom considering increased constituents. Here, we transfer the concept of 'isomer' to the experimental investigation on the unexplored isomeric dynamics of soliton molecules in parallel. Particularly, two isomers for soliton triplets and four isomers for soliton quadruplets are captured under different self-assembled forms, within each of which the binding separations and relative phases of the constituents are governed by mutual soliton interactions. With the diverse separation-phase evolving trajectories mapped in the interaction plane, the detailed insights of the temporal distribution and the transient dynamics are displayed with respect to a panorama of the isomeric dynamics. The perspective of optical isomers shed new light on the analogy with matter molecules, and the underlying isomeric dynamics may stimulate the artificial manipulation of various soliton molecules for ultrafast applications.

Abstract:Soliton molecules (SMs) are stable bound states between solitons. SMs in fiber lasers are intensively investigated and embody analogies with matter molecules. Recent experimental studies on SMs formed by bright solitons, including soliton-pair, soliton-triplet or even soliton-quartet molecules, are intensive. However, study on soliton-binding states between bright and dark solitons is limited. In this work, the formation of such novel SMs in a fiber laser with near-zero group velocity dispersion (ZGVD) is reported. Physically, these SMs are formed because of the incoherent cross-phase modulation of light and constitute a new form of SMs that are conceptually analog to the multi-atom molecules in chemistry. Our research results could assist the understanding of the dynamics of large SM complexes. These findings may also motivate potential applications in large-capacity transmission and all-optical information storage.

Abstract:Optical solitons in ultrafast fiber lasers, as a result of dual balances between dispersion and nonlinearity as well as gain and loss, enable various soliton interactions. Soliton collisions are among the most intriguing soliton interactions, which fuel the understanding for particle-like properties of solitons. Here, we experimentally investigate the transient dynamics of collisions between a two-soliton molecule and a soliton singlet in a mode-locked fiber laser. By means of the dispersive Fourier transform technique, the evolving spectral interferograms of different collision scenarios are measured in real time. In particular, the "quasi-elastic" collision is observed, which shows that the soliton-molecule state remains unaltered after the collision and the group-velocity difference between the soliton molecule and the singlet is changed. It is directly demonstrated that a bond exchange occurs between the colliding solitons. By tuning the intra-cavity polarization controller, the dynamic processes of other collision outcomes, including the annihilation of a soliton in the soliton molecule as well as the formation of a stable unequally spaced soliton triplet, are also revealed. Our work facilitates a deeper understanding of soliton collision dynamics in ultrafast fiber lasers.

Abstract:Benefiting from ultrafast temporal resolution, broadband spectral bandwidth, as well as high peak power, passively mode-locked fibre lasers have attracted growing interest and exhibited great potential from fundamental sciences to industrial and military applications. As a nonlinear system containing complex interactions from gain, loss, nonlinearity, dispersion, etc., ultrafast fibre lasers deliver not only conventional single soliton but also soliton bunching with different types. In analogy to molecules consisting of several atoms in chemistry, soliton molecules (in other words, bound solitons) in fibre lasers are of vital importance for in-depth understanding of the nonlinear interaction mechanism and further exploration for high-capacity fibre-optic communications. In this Review, we summarize the state-of-the-art advances on soliton molecules in ultrafast fibre lasers. A variety of soliton molecules with different numbers of soliton, phase-differences and pulse separations were experimentally observed owing to the flexibility of parameters such as mode-locking techniques and dispersion control. Numerical simulations clearly unravel how different nonlinear interactions contribute to formation of soliton molecules. Analysis of the stability and the underlying physical mechanisms of bound solitons bring important insights to this field. For a complete view of nonlinear optical phenomena in fibre lasers, other dissipative states such as vibrating soliton pairs, soliton rains, rogue waves and coexisting dissipative solitons are also discussed. With development of advanced real-time detection techniques, the internal motion of different pulsing states is anticipated to be characterized, rendering fibre lasers a versatile platform for nonlinear complex dynamics and various practical applications.

Abstract:Synchronised ultrafast soliton lasers have attracted great research interest in recent decades. However, there is a lack of comprehensive understanding regarding the buildup mechanism of synchronised pulses. Here, we report a dynamic analysis of independent and synchronised solitons buildup mechanisms in synchronised ultrafast soliton lasers. The laser comprises an erbium-doped fibre cavity and a thulium-doped fibre cavity bridged with a common arm. Pulses operating at two different wavelengths formed in the cavities are synchronised by cross-phase modulation-induced soliton correlation in the common fibre arm. We find that the whole buildup process of the thulium-doped fibre laser successively undergoes five different stages: continuous wave, relaxation oscillation, quasi-mode-locking, continuous wave mode-locking and synchronised mode-locking. It is found that the starting time of the synchronised solitons is mainly determined by the meeting time of dual-color solitons. Our results will further deepen the understanding of dual-color synchronised lasers and enrich the study of complex nonlinear system dynamics.

Abstract:Ultrafast science builds on dynamic compositions of precisely timed light pulses, and evolving groups of pulses are observed in almost every mode-locked laser. However, the underlying physics has rarely been controlled or used until now. Here, we demonstrate a general approach to control soliton motion inside a dual-comb laser and the programmable synthesis of ultrashort pulse patterns. Introducing single-pulse modulation inside an Er:fiber laser, we rapidly shift the timing between two temporally separated soliton combs. Their superposition outside the cavity yields ultrashort soliton sequences. On the basis of real-time spectral interferometry, we observe the deterministic switching of intersoliton separation arising from the interplay of attracting and repulsing forces via ultrafast nonlinearity and laser gain dynamics. Harnessing these insights, we demonstrate the high-speed all-optical synthesis of nano- to picosecond pump-probe delays and programmable free-form soliton trajectories. This concept may pave the way to a new class of all-optical delay generators for ultrafast measurements at unprecedented high tuning, cycling, and acquisition speeds.

Abstract:Solitons attract a great deal of interest in many fields, ranging from optics to fluid mechanics, cosmology, particle physics and condensed matter. However, solitons of these very different types rarely coexist and interact with each other. Here we develop a system that hosts optical solitons coexisting with topological solitonic structures localized in the molecular alignment field of a soft birefringent medium. We experimentally demonstrate and theoretically explain optomechanical interactions between such optical and topological solitons, mediated by the local transfer of momentum between light and matter and the nonlocal orientational elasticity of the liquid-crystal phase used in our system. We show that the delicate balance arising from these different contributions to the optomechanical force enables facile dynamical control and spatial localization of topological solitons. Our findings reveal unusual solitonic tractor beams and emergent light–matter self-patterning phenomena that could aid in creating new breeds of nonlinear photonic materials and devices.

Abstract:Optimization of self-starting in passively mode-locked optical soliton fiber laser resonators results from a complex transient dynamic involving soliton molecules, soliton-based complexes and supramolecular structures, with particle-like properties. By means of time-stretch dispersive Fourier transform based real-time spectroscopy, we identify a new route to the passive mode-locking of fiber laser solitons. A raised relaxation oscillation stage is followed by the generation of shaking-soliton molecular triplets. The relative phase between satellite and main pulses of shaking soliton triplets evolves chaotically, while the two satellite pulses are orthogonal to each other in their state of polarization. These results provide new perspectives into the soliton formation and the internal dynamics of soliton molecules with higher degrees of freedom.

Abstract:This study employs real-time Fourier transform spectroscopy to investigate the pulsation dynamics of soliton molecules in a mode-locked erbium-doped fiber laser, utilizing pump intensity modulation. By manipulating the driving voltage of the pump source, we systematically observe and characterize the impact of external modulation signals on the amplitude, period, pulsation frequency, and the relative phase evolution among the pulsating soliton molecules within their spectra.The results demonstrate that, under specific conditions of pump intensity modulation, the pulsation period of soliton molecule spectra can be precisely regulated by the pump modulation frequency. Concurrently, the amplitude of soliton molecule pulsations and the evolution of relative phase among the solitons are intricately tied to the pump modulation frequency. At lower modulation frequencies, such as 1 kHz, the relative phase among the pulses within the soliton molecule exhibits a sliding-type dynamics as a function of propagation time.As the modulation frequency gradually increases, e.g., to 5 kHz, a scenario emerges where three soliton molecules are generated. Notably, both the soliton spacing and relative phase undergo synchronous adjustments influenced by the pump modulation. With further escalation of the modulation frequency, such as to 20 kHz, the relative phase evolution among the pulses within the soliton molecule gradually descends into chaos. This observation suggests the plausible existence of an inherent resonant frequency associated with pulsating soliton molecules, which has direct implications for their stability.The findings of this research hold significant relevance for advancing our comprehension of soliton molecule generation and enhancing their stability. Furthermore, they offer valuable insights into the broader domain of all-optical manipulation and applications of soliton molecules, as well as their utilization in pulse encoding within mode-locked laser systems.

Abstract:Binding of particles through weak (non-covalent) interactions plays a central role in multiple modern disciplines, from Cooper pairing of electrons in superconductivity to formation of supramolecules in biochemistry. Optical solitons, which are analogous in many ways to particles, arise from a balance between nonlinearity and dispersion and have only been known to be able to form molecule-like, localized structures through covalent interactions due to direct overlapping. Non-covalent binding of optical solitons that based on long-rang interactions have, however, so far escaped experimental observations. Long-range interactions between optical solitons have proven almost impossible to control, generally leading to disorder. In this paper, however we show that by tailoring weak, long-range soliton interactions, a large population of optical solitons in an optoacoustic mode-locking fiber laser can assemble into stable, highly-ordered structures that resemble biochemical supramolecules. We demonstrate here a theoretical model of the non-covalent binding mechanism, and provide some experimental results supporting this model.
Transient multi-soliton dynamics between adjacent-order harmonic mode-locking states in a hybrid mode-locked fiber laser

Abstract:The buildup dynamics from noise-seeded relaxation oscillation to harmonic mode-locking (HML) solitons generation have been well investigated in ultrafast fiber lasers. However, the transient multi-soliton dynamics in higher-order HML states are still attractive yet largely unexplored. We reveal here that, the experimental observation of the multi-soliton dynamics including soliton beating dynamics, soliton annihilation, transient bound state, two-soliton resonance state, soliton splitting, and multi-soliton repulsion dynamics are analyzed by the emerging time-stretched dispersive Fourier transform (TS-DFT) technique. Particularly, the excessive intracavity energy result in the double-pulse pulsating with transient bound states and three types of soliton molecules states can be observed in the earlier and middle part of the transition process. Numerical results further reveal that several similar multi-soliton dynamics operating at stable 2nd and 3rd states could be caused by a fine tuning of the pump power level in a hybrid mode-locked laser. Our results unveil a diverse set of ultrafast transient process in fiber lasers, and open up new ways into obtaining and controlling the generation of high-repetition-rate ultrashort pulses in fiber lasers.

Abstract:Harmonic mode-locking, realized actively or passively, is an effective technique for increasing the repetition rate of lasers, with important applications in optical sampling, laser micro-machining and frequency metrology. It is critically important to understand how a harmonically mode-locked pulse train responds to external perturbations and noise, so as to make sure that it is stable and resistant to noise. Here, in a series of carefully designed experiments, we elucidate the retiming dynamics of laser pulses generated in a soliton fiber laser harmonically mode-locked at ~2 GHz to the acoustic resonance in a photonic crystal fiber (PCF) core. We characterize the self-driven optomechanical lattice along the PCF using a homodyne set-up, and reveal that each soliton undergoes damped oscillatory retiming within its trapping potential after an abrupt perturbation. In addition we show, through statistical analysis of the intra-cavity pulse spacing, how the trapping potentials are effective for suppressing timing jitter. The experimental results are well described using a dynamic model including dissipation, which provides valuable insight into the stability and noise performance of optomechanically mode-locked laser systems, and may also be useful for studying complex inter-soliton interactions.

Abstract:We report on the experimental and numerical observations of synchronisation and desynchronisation of bound states of multiple breathing solitons (breathing soliton molecules) in an ultrafast fibre laser. In the desynchronisation regime, although the breather molecules as wholes are not synchronised to the cavity, the individual breathers within a molecule are synchronised to each other with a delay (lag synchronisation). An intermediate regime between the synchronisation and desynchronisation phases is also observed, featuring self-modulation of the synchronised state. This regime may also occur in other systems displaying synchronisation. Breathing soliton molecules in a laser cavity open new avenues for the study of nonlinear synchronisation dynamics.
