External chirality enhancing downconversion in a waveguide-coupled nonlinear plasmonic metasurface

Abstract:A novel Ψ-like chiral plasmonic metasurface is designed and studied numerically using finite difference time domain (FDTD) computation to achieve large circular dichroism (CD) in the near-infrared (NIR) regime. The structure shows a distinct CD peak at 1110 nm with CD strength of ~ 0.65 and full width at half maxima (FWHM) of ~ 85 nm. The chiroptical response critically depends on the structural thickness ( h ) and inner radius ( r i ). At low thickness ( h < 100 nm), CD is observed to be very weak, although, a considerable CD appears at h ≥ 200 nm. On the other hand, a change in the inner radius by 100 nm shifts CD peak wavelength by ~ 200 nm. Giant CD arises due to high reflection damping at LCP (left circularly polarized) light excitation compared to RCP (right circularly polarized) light excitation, as evident from the near-field distributions. Furthermore, the proposed structure offers multifunctional properties, such as, linear dichroism (LD) of ~ 0.72 at 852 nm and polarization rotation (θ rot ) of ~ 70° at non-resonant wavelength of 1250 nm. Good structural (period variation from 750 to 850 nm) and angular (angle of incidence within ± 10°) tolerance, and multifunctionalities make the proposed Ψ-like metasurface attractive for chiroptical sensing.

Optical Synthesis of Transient Chirality in Achiral Plasmonic Metasurfaces

Abstract:As much as chiral metasurfaces are significant in stereochemistry and polarization control, tunable chiroptical response is important for their dynamic counterparts. A single metasurface device with invertible chiral states can selectively harness or manipulate both handedness of circularly polarized light upon demand, where in fact chiral inversion in molecules is an active research field. Tactics for chirality switching can be classified into geometry modification and refractive index tuning. However, these generally confront slow modulation speed or restrained refractive index tuning effects in the visible regime with forbidden 'true' inversion. Here, we reconfigure the 'optical' geometry through inhomogeneous spatiotemporal distribution of hot carriers as a breakthrough, transforming a plasmonic achiral metasurface into an ultrafast transient chiral medium with near-perfectly-invertible handedness in the visible. The photoinduced chirality relaxes through the fast spatial diffusion process of electron temperature compared to electron-phonon relaxation, empowering hot-carrier-based devices to be particularly suitable for ultrafast chiroptics.

Abstract:Circular dichroism spectroscopy is a technique used to discriminate molecular chirality, which is essential in fields like biology, chemistry, or pharmacology where different chiral agents often show different biological activities. Nevertheless, due to the inherently weak molecular-chiroptical activity, this technique is limited to high concentrations or large analyte volumes. Finding novel ways to enhance the circular dichroism would boost the performance of these techniques. So far, the enhancement of light-matter interaction mediated by plasmons is the most common way to develop chiral plasmonic structures with extraordinarily strong chiroptical responses. However, absorptive losses of metals at optical frequencies has hindered its practical use in many scenarios. In this work, we propose an all-dielectric low-loss chiral metasurface with unit cells built by high-refractive-index crossed-bowtie nanoantennas. These unit cells, built of silicon, strongly increase the chiroptical effect through the simultaneous interaction of their electric and magnetic modes, which in contrast to other recent proposals shows at the same time a high concentration of the electric field in its gap that leads to the presence of hotspots. The proposed structure exhibits a circular dichroism spectra up to 3-fold higher than that of previous proposals that use complex plasmonic or hybrid nanostructures, making it a clear alternative to develop low-loss metasurfaces with potential applications in chiral target sensing/biosensing. For completeness, single triangular shaped and symmetric (achiral) bowtie nanostructures were also studied as possible candidates for a detection up to the single-molecule level due the lack of a circular dichroism background of the nanostructures themselves.
Second-Harmonic Enhancement from a Nonlinear Plasmonic Metasurface Coupled to an Optical Waveguide

Abstract:Metasurfaces are commonly constructed from two-dimensional arrangements of nanoresonators. Coherent coupling of the nanoresonators through extended photonic modes of the metasurface results in a modified collective optical response, and enhances light–matter interactions. Here we experimentally demonstrate that strong collective resonances can arise also from coupling the metasurface to an optical waveguide. We explore the effect this waveguide-assisted collective interaction has on second-harmonic generation from the hybrid system. Our measurements indicate an enhancement factor of 8 for the transmitted second harmonic in comparison to incoherent collective scattering. In addition, complementary simulations predict about a 100-fold enhancement for the second harmonic that remains confined inside the waveguide. The ability to control the hybrid modes by the waveguide's design provides broader control over the formation of the collective interaction and new tools to tailor the nonlinear interactions. Our findings pave a promising direction to realize nonlinear photonic circuits with metasurfaces.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Resonant Chiral Effects in Nonlinear Dielectric Metasurfaces

Abstract:We study the resonant enhancement of linear and nonlinear chiroptical effects in planar silicon metasurfaces with an in-plane asymmetry supporting multipolar Mie resonances and quasi-bound states in the continuum (quasi-BICs). We demonstrate theoretically and observe in experiment the pronounced linear circular dichroism at the quasi-BIC resonances originating from the interaction of modes with the substrate. We further find that both local field enhancement and third-harmonic signal are large for Mie resonances and some quasi-BIC modes due to the critical coupling. We demonstrate experimentally a strong nonlinear chiroptical response associated with high efficiency of the third-harmonic generation and large nonlinear circular dichroism varying from +0.918 ± 0.049 to −0.771 ± 0.004 for the samples with different asymmetries. We reveal the nonreciprocal nature of nonlinear chirality governed by the microscopic symmetry of nonlinearities and macroscopic symmetries of the meta-atom and metasurface lattice. We believe our results suggest a general strategy for engineering nonlinear chiroptical response in dielectric resonant metasurfaces.

Unlocking the out-of-plane dimension for photonic bound states in the continuum to achieve maximum optical chirality

Abstract:The realization of lossless metasurfaces with true chirality crucially requires the fabrication of three-dimensional structures, constraining experimental feasibility and hampering practical implementations. Even though the three-dimensional assembly of metallic nanostructures has been demonstrated previously, the resulting plasmonic resonances suffer from high intrinsic and radiative losses. The concept of photonic bound states in the continuum (BICs) is instrumental for tailoring radiative losses in diverse geometries, especially when implemented using lossless dielectrics, but applications have so far been limited to planar structures. Here, we introduce a novel nanofabrication approach to unlock the height of individual resonators within all-dielectric metasurfaces as an accessible parameter for the efficient control of resonance features and nanophotonic functionalities. In particular, we realize out-of-plane symmetry breaking in quasi-BIC metasurfaces and leverage this design degree of freedom to demonstrate an optical all-dielectric quasi-BIC metasurface with maximum intrinsic chirality that responds selectively to light of a particular circular polarization depending on the structural handedness. Our experimental results not only open a new paradigm for all-dielectric BICs and chiral nanophotonics, but also promise advances in the realization of efficient generation of optical angular momentum, holographic metasurfaces, and parity-time symmetry-broken optical systems.

Abstract:We propose a dielectric metasurface constructed by quadrumer silicon nano-disks with crossed slots in the middle. This metasurface can support the excitation of bound states in the continuum which are closely related to the toroidal dipole resonance. After introducing chiral enantiomers with weak chirality into the surrounding medium, due to the bound states in the continuum, the chiroptical effect of the metasurface can be greatly enhanced. Especially, this metasurface breaks neither the in-plane nor out-plane symmetry, which has lower requirements of spatial processing capabilities. The proposed metasurface can be used in the trace analyse of chiral enantiomers and may lead potential applications for tailored phase control and ultra-integrated molar chiral sensing metadevices.

Abstract:In the strong-coupling regime, the interaction between light and matter reaches a hybridization state where the photonic and material components become inseparably linked. Using tailored states of light to break symmetries in such systems can underpin the development of novel non-equilibrium quantum materials. Chiral optical cavities offer a promising way for this, enabling either temporal or spatial symmetry-breaking, both of which are unachievable with conventional mirror cavities. For spatial symmetry-breaking a cavity needs to discriminate the handedness of circularly polarized light, a functionality that can only be achieved with metamaterials. Here, we suggest and demonstrate experimentally a chiral transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) metasurface with broken out-of-plane symmetry, allowing for a selective formation of self-hybridized exciton-polaritons with specific chirality. Our metasurface cavity maintains maximum chirality for oblique incidence up to 20°, significantly outperforming all previously known designs, thereby turning the angle of incidence from a constraint to a new degree of freedom for sub-nanometer precise control of resonance wavelengths. Moreover, we study the chiral strong-coupling regime in nonlinear experiments and show the polariton-driven nature of chiral third-harmonic generation. Our results demonstrate a clear pathway towards novel quantum material engineering with implications in a wide range of photonics research, such as superconductivity and valleytronics.

Abstract:Dynamic control of circularly polarized photoluminescence has aroused great interest in quantum optics and nanophotonics. Chiral plasmonic metasurfaces enable the manipulation of the polarization state via plasmon-photon coupling. However, current plasmonic light-emitting metasurfaces for effective deterministic modulation of spin-dependent emission at near-infrared wavelengths are underexplored in terms of dissymmetry and tunability. Here, we demonstrate a microfluidic hybrid emitting system of a suspended twisted stacking metasurface coated with PbS quantum dots. The suspended metasurface is fabricated with a single step of electron beam exposure, exhibiting a strong optical chirality of 309° μm-1 with a thickness of less than λ/10 at key spectral locations. With significant chiral-selective interactions, enhanced photoluminescence is achieved with strong dissymmetry in circular polarization. The dissymmetry factor of the induced circularly polarized emission can reach 1.54. More importantly, altering the refractive index of the surrounding medium at the bottom surface of the metasurface can effectively manipulate the chiroptical responses of the hybrid system, hence leading to chirality-reversed emission. This active hybrid emitting system could be a resultful platform for chirality-switchable light emission from achiral quantum emitters, holding great potential for anticounterfeiting, biosensing, light sources, imaging, and displays.

Abstract:Dynamic control of circular dichroism in photonic structures is critically important for compact spectrometers, stereoscopic displays, and information processing exploiting multiple degrees of freedom. Metasurfaces can help miniaturize chiral devices but only produce static and limited chiral responses. While external stimuli can tune resonances, their modulations are often weak, and reversing continuously the sign of circular dichroism is extremely challenging. Here, we demonstrate the dynamically tunable chiral response of resonant metasurfaces supporting chiral bound states in the continuum combining them with phase-change materials. Phase transition between amorphous and crystalline phases allows for control of chiral response and varies chirality rapidly from −0.947 to +0.958 backward and forward via the chirality continuum. Our demonstrations underpin the rapid development of chiral photonics and its applications.

Coupled plasmon wave dynamics beyond anomalous reflection: phase gradient Copper metasurface for visible to the near infrared spectrum

Abstract:In nanoscale photonic devices, the demand for multifunctionality from metasurface 2D optics increases rapidly. To explore fine-tuning in the design metric, we reinvestigated the trapezoid shape copper metasurface with Finite-Difference Time-Domain simulation for efficiently using linearly polarized light for two different functionalities. From the plasmonic band structure, we see how the degree of asymmetry in geometry affects the efficient resonance coupling of the traveling plasmonic modes, along with different types of mode hybridization profiles related to the nanoantenna's geometric shape. Tuning the nanoantenna's length, we can excite the effective plasmon mode supported by this configuration and guide out surface wave unidirectionally from the normal incident free-space light for visible to infrared range. Directed surface plasmon polariton has both antisymmetric and symmetric modes oscillating between the top and bottom surface of the continuous metal layer depending on the nanoantenna's length and wavelength. This proposed Copper metasurface is optimized for far-field application of broadband (600-900 nm) anomalous beam steering for an average of 65 percent efficiency with a maximum of 64 degree angle. This work brings more understanding of how one metasurface can be implemented in small footprint plasmonic devices, waveguide mode controlling, as well as beam steering with their wavelength dependent functionality.

Near-field enhancement by waveguide-plasmon polaritons in a nonlocal metasurface

Abstract:Localized surface plasmons in metal nanoparticles are widely used in nano-optics to confine and enhance optical fields. It has been previously shown that, if the nanoparticles are distributed periodically, an additional enhancement can be achieved by coupling the localized surface plasmons to the diffraction orders of the lattice, forming surface lattice resonances. In this work, we study an even further improvement of the near-field enhancement by placing a metal-dielectric slab waveguide beneath the lattice of the particles to excite coupled waveguide-plasmon polaritons. These excitations can extend over many periods of the lattice, making the metasurface highly nonlocal. We numerically demonstrate that the approach can provide a significant extra increase in the near-field intensity -- by a factor of 80 over that produced by a single-particle plasmon resonance and by 7 over the lattice-resonance enhancement. The described enhancement mechanism can be used to design extraordinarily efficient nonlocal optical metasurfaces for many applications, including surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, nonlinear optics, and solar energy harvesting.

Abstract:Chiral metasurfaces have wide applications in chiral sensing and functional devices, such as ultrathin circular polarizers. By analytical coupled mode theory and finite-difference time domain simulation, we investigate the chiroptical properties of designed dielectric metasurface with unit cell of corner-stacked nanorods and stacked nanorings, paying attention to the bright-dark-mode coupling effects. With the help of phase modulation and mode hybridization, we can realize chirality transfer from bright modes of chiral nanorods to dark modes of achiral nanorings, which results in chirality-selective transparency due to chirality-selective excitation of binding/antibonding dark modes. Moreover, one can switch between different coupling regimes with a distinct physical effect (Fano effect vs Rabi splitting) by changing only the chirality of the incident field without varying the structure of the metasurface. Based on the mechanisms of chirality transfer and mode hybridization, our designed metasurface has achieved chirality-selective transparent window with tunable central frequency and bandwidth, which provides insight and guidance for the optoelectronic device design.

Amplified linear and nonlinear chiral sensing assisted by anapole modes in hybrid metasurfaces

Abstract:The interaction between chiral molecules and circularly polarized light is largely influenced by the local optical chirality density. This interaction prompts substantial demand of the design of nanophotonic platforms capable of enhancing such effects across large and accessible volumes. Such a magnification requires nanostructures that provide strong electric and magnetic field enhancements while preserving the phase relation of circular light. Dielectric nanostructures, particularly those able to support resonances, are ideal candidates for this task due to their capacity for high electric and magnetic field enhancements. On the other hand, efficient third harmonic generation calls for strong electric field resonances within dielectric materials, a feature often boosted by incorporating plasmonic materials into hybrid systems. In this work, we numerically propose a coupled silicon disk-gold ring system that can exploit the anapole-induced field confinement to provide a broadband magnified circular dichroism under realistic conditions, reaching values up to a 230-fold enhancement. We also demonstrate that this structure can be employed as an efficient third harmonic generator which, when integrated with chiral media, enables an 800-fold enhancement in circular dichroism. Furthermore, we show that pulsed illumination at intensities up to 10 GW/cm2 does not induce temperature increments that could potentially damage the samples. These findings suggest that this system can be a promising and versatile approach towards ultrasensitive chiral sensing.

Substrate‐Induced Maximum Optical Chirality of Planar Dielectric Structures

Abstract:Resonant dielectric metasurfaces are a game‐changing platform for chiral optics. Absence of mirror symmetry planes defines geometric chirality and remains the main condition of strong optical chirality. Although transparent substrates formally break out‐of‐plane mirror symmetries, their optical effect is typically subtle being rarely considered for enhancing optical chirality. It is shown that a substrate can drive the optical chirality of otherwise achiral metastructure from zero to up to the ultimate maximum via merging twisted photonic eigenstates of different parity. The general recipe is confirmed by simulations of light transmission in the normal and oblique directions by a rotation‐symmetric photonic crystal slab upon different transparent substrates. Resonant dielectric planar structures can interact selectively with light of particular helicity thus providing an attractive platform for "chiral flat optics". The absence of mirror‐symmetry planes defines geometric chirality, and it remains the main condition for achieving strong circular dichroism. For planar optical structures such as photonic‐crystal slabs and metasurfaces, breaking the out‐of‐plane mirror symmetry is especially challenging, as it requires to fabricate meta‐atoms with a tilt, variable height, or vertically shifted positions. Although transparent substrates formally break out‐of‐plane mirror symmetries, their optical effect is typically subtle being rarely considered for enhancing optical chirality. Here it is revealed that low‐refractive‐index substrates can induce up to maximum intrinsic optical chirality in otherwise achiral metastructures so that the transparency to waves of one helicity is combined with resonant blocking of waves of the opposite helicity. This effect originates from engineering twisted photonic eigenstates of different parities. The perturbation analysis developed in terms of the resonant‐state expansion reveals how the eigenstate coupling induced by a substrate gives rise to a pair of chiral resonances of opposite handedness. The general theory is confirmed by the specific examples of light transmission in the normal and oblique directions by a rotation‐symmetric photonic‐crystal slab placed on different transparent substrates.

Abstract:Chirality, which describes the broken mirror symmetry in geometric structures, exists macroscopically in our daily life as well as microscopically down to molecular levels. Correspondingly, chiral molecules interact differently with circularly polarized light exhibiting opposite handedness (left-handed and right-handed). However, the interaction between chiral molecules and chiral light is very weak. In contrast, artificial chiral plasmonic structures can generate “super-chiral” plasmonic near-field, leading to enhanced chiral light-matter (or chiroptical) interactions. The “super-chiral” near-field presents different amplitude and phase under opposite handedness incidence, which can be utilized to engineer linear and nonlinear chiroptical interactions. Specifically, in the interaction between quantum emitters and chiral plasmonic structures, the chiral hot spots can favour the emission with a specific handedness. This article reviews the state-of-the-art research on the design, fabrication and chiroptical response of different chiral plasmonic nanostructures or metasurfaces. This review also discusses enhanced chiral light-matter interactions that are essential for applications like chirality sensing, chiral selective light emitting and harvesting. In the final part, the review ends with a perspective on future directions of chiral plasmonics.
