Abstract:The relationship between feminist theories and the law and literature movement is not new and has provided very fruitful analysis over many decades, ever since the 1970s. Twenty-first century literature, which includes L' Amica Geniale (My brilliant friend), even when describing stories and action that are placed in other historical times (in this case, in the historical context of the twentieth century), allows establishing an ever renewed dialogue with feminist theories, in its current expression. The author reviews the recent "rediscovery" of feminism and how some concepts evolved in the context of feminist theories. A concept to which she devotes attention is patriarchy, as it is paramount for understanding the connections that can be perceived to exist between feminist theories and FERRANTE's work. In the author’s opinion, the Neapolitan novels are eloquent in the portrait presented – complex, multifaceted, ambiguous even – of what it ultimately means to be a woman living in a patriarchal society.

Abstract:The article focuses on the international reception of the first season of the TV series L’amica geniale (My Brilliant Friend, 2018-). This Italian media product has been distributed and circulated in numerous countries around the globe as the television adaptation of the first book of Elena Ferrante’s bestselling Neapolitan Novels. Generally, the forms of representation and narration of Italianness in Italian TV series that circulate abroad present two distinctive traits: on the one hand, they feature a globally recognizable image of Italian identity and culture, and on the other hand, they narrate stories that are deeply rooted in Italian local contexts. L’amica geniale places in the middle of this spectrum. The aim of this article is to discuss how the audience of the tv series contributes to defining its identity as a transnational/Italian cultural product by fostering symbolic processes often in tension with each other. L’amica geniale appeals to the foreign public both due to its local features, that is, by presenting elements that can be easily traced back to Italian history and culture, and because it can be inscribed within the broad label of quality tv.

Abstract:Abstract:At the center of her tetralogy, Elena Ferrante stages the manifold issues of female friendship and identity formation, of self-actualization and self-annihilation. The story of Lila and Lena, girls turned women in postwar Naples, unfolds against the claustrophobic and violent sociocultural context of a peripheral rione. Reading through the lenses of psychoanalysis, deconstruction, and feminist philosophy, our essay provides some theoretical and interpretive coordinates, focusing in particular on the first, eponymous volume (2011). Starting with the Derridean notion of "trace" which radically problematizes the very act of writing an (auto)biography, our reflection is then triggered by Lacan's account of the mirror stage and its role in the construction of the self through specular relations. Finally, relying on Cavarero's and Butler's insights, we read the symbolic sisterhood between the two girls and their envisioning of an utopian "city with love" as a possible political model of reciprocal exchange and ethical bonding.

Abstract:This article investigates the relationship between space appropriation and women’s writing and publishing activities, in the context of second-wave feminism in Milan. From the early 1970s onwards, Milan’s feminist movement – which arose from the conjunction between transnational, national and local factors – engaged in a variety of translating, writing and publishing projects. In fact, Milan was one of the first Italian cities to publish translations of foreign feminist texts. More importantly, it was the site of the earliest feminist theoretical production in Italy. The article argues that, at different points of the decade, the empowering act of writing, publishing and circulating feminist knowledge reflected a search for a more profound consciousness of the female self which was intricately connected to the (symbolical and material) appropriation of women-only spaces in the city. In particular, it discusses three different expressions of this interaction between physical and discursive space: the feminist publishing house Scritti di Rivolta Femminile, the Libreria delle donne di Milano and the 150 hours monographic courses in the Affori neighbourhood.

Il gioco di specchi tra i di- vergenti destini delle due protagoniste da vita ad un congegno narrativo che corrode e mette sottilmente in dubbio il diagramma progressivo dell'emancipazione sociale e personale di Elena. Sull’onda della delusione storica e del fallimento delle utopie di una generazione, a prevalere e infine il fascino regressivo del ritorno alle origini del materno e alla vischiosita claustrofobica di una Napoli popolare senza speranza di riscatto. My Brilliant Friend , Elena Ferrante’s intense tetralogy presents a cross-fertilazation of Familienroman , Bildungsroman and historico-social narrative. The divergent destinies of the two female protagonists, which Ferrante conveys through mirror effects, generate a narrative ‘machine’ that destroys and questions the very narrative of the protagonist Elena’s social and personal emancipation and progress. The disillusion with history, the failure of the utopia of a whole generation are the hallmark of Ferrante’s latest work, which is therefore dominated by the regressive lure of the return to the maternal and to the claustophobic stickiness of a working-class Naples, where no redemption is possible.

Abstract:ABSTRACT This article brings together perspectives from world literature and translation studies to compare the international reception of two ‘glocal’ literary cases: Andrea Camilleri’s Montalbano books, and Elena Ferrante’s tetralogy L’amica geniale. The national and international success of these series raises important questions for scholars of translation studies, multilingualism, world literature and literary markets, and sheds light on the significance of different kinds of multilingualism in fiction and of their treatment in translation. The article addresses the following questions: how do monolingual book markets contain and discipline multilingual fiction? What happens when multilingual fiction travels through translation? How do we explain the present openness of the Anglo-American market to translated fiction with an emphasis on the vernacular? The author argues that while both Camilleri and Ferrante foreground cultural difference and linguistic incommensurability, the way in which they portray the experience of diglossia had an important impact in determining their national and international success as well as the route through which they achieved international visibility.

Abstract:The purpose of this study is to find evidence for supporting the hypothesis that language is the mirror of our thinking, our prejudices and cultural stereotypes. In this analysis, a questionnaire was administered to 537 people. The answers have been analysed to see if gender stereotypes were present such as the attribution of psychological and behavioural characteristics. In particular, the aim was to identify, if any, what are the stereotyped images, which emerge in defining the roles of men and women in modern society. Moreover, the results given can be a good starting point to understand if gender stereotypes, and the expectations they produce, can result in penalization or inequality. If so, the language and its use would create inherently a gender bias, which influences evaluations both in work settings both in everyday life.

The study focuses on two key texts: the Italian publication of Three Guineas by the feminist press La Tartaruga; and the Catalogo giallo, the second publication of the Milan-based Libreria delle donne, which played a vital role in the evolution of the feminism of difference.

The literature has shown the existence of gender stereotypes on career choices, internalization of roles, and school and social experiences and demonstrates the impact of demographic factors on stereotypes. Abstract:This study addresses the underdeveloped dialogue in contemporary intercultural relations between Italy and its ‘others’ to examine the ways in which Amara Lakhous' novel Divorzio all'islamica a viale Marconi (2010) [Divorce Islamic style in viale Marconi] articulates a postcolonial response to Pietro Germi's 1961 film Divorzio all'italiana [Divorce Italian style] by initiating an intercultural dialogue among preexistent and emerging cultures. Foregrounding intertextuality and ‘writing back’ in a postcolonial context as intercultural communication modes, this paper explores the intertextual relations between the novel and the film; it examines the use of irony and multivocal narrative in Lakhous' novel as strategies of intercultural mediation. Moreover, it interrogates the works' social, cultural, historical and linguistic movements to analyse the narrativizations of familiarity and estrangement. Divorzio all'islamica a viale Marconi enables a dialogue between local cultures and ‘guest’ cultures by tracing (obliterated) common histories, shared experiences and similar social and cultural predicaments across the northern and southern shores of the Mediterranean, remapping geographical and cultural terrains.

Abstract:ABSTRACT The Handmaid’s Tale ([1985] 2017), a must-read feminist dystopian novel by Canadian author Margaret Atwood, and Luna Nera [Black Moon] (2019), a recent historical-fantasy novel by Italian writer Tiziana Triana, present narratives that encourage their readers to question traditional models of femininity. Set in different times, yet in settings that are in many ways similar, both narratives describe societies where women are perceived as individuals to be controlled and at the same time where sisterhood helps them to succeed. Following the rise of right-wing governments and ideologies on both sides of the Atlantic and the backlash of the patriarchy against women’s hard-won rights and freedoms, Atwood’s twentieth-century masterpiece has regained visibility thanks to its on-screen adaptation as a TV series. Similarly, Triana’s Luna Nera has also recently been adapted as a Netflix original TV series directed by Francesca Comencini, Paola Randi and Susanna Nicchiarelli, thus revealing the neglected history of witches in seventeenth-century central Italy to global viewers. Through some fictional examples as a starting point for the discussion, this article will reflect on the following questions: at a time when women’s rights, particularly reproductive rights, are under threat, what can novels and TV series inspired by them tell us about contemporary gender concerns? How can symbolic motherhood and sisterhood help women in these challenging scenarios to escape patriarchal control? And how, in turn, might their actions influence the audience? Building on feminist discourses on the practice of affidamento [entrustment], I will discuss a series of sociocultural issues relevant to contemporary women, with particular attention to reproductive rights, represented in the novels and their TV series adaptation in the context of the current political debates on both sides of the Atlantic and beyond.

Abstract:L’articolo si propone di delineare un’analisi comparativa tra Orlando (1928) di Virginia Woolf e How to Be Both (2014) di Ali Smith. In particolare, si intende dimostrare come l’opera di Smith rielabori in modo creativo il romanzo di Woolf, andando così ad incarnare e ad esprimere con vividezza il concetto di ‘mente androgina’ teorizzato dalla stessa autrice. Ciò avviene attraverso la rimozione dei confini temporali tra passato e presente, l’ambiguità sessuale delle protagoniste e, soprattutto, attraverso un paradigma letterario capace di indagare la necessità di un’interazione reciproca tra autrici e lettori, e di un più ampio dialogo tra il testo letterario e le altre influenze artistiche e culturali con le quali instaura un imprescindibile rapporto dialettico.

Abstract:In this thesis, by use of a thematic approach, an intersectional analysis of The Lover byMarguerite Duras has been carried out. The aim was to examine how different power structuresinteract with one another in a colonial society. The research focused on the main femalecharacter’s search for a personal identity and how this pursuit is influenced by gender, ethnicityand class structures.The conclusion is that the character is experiencing a feeling of alienation from the communityof white colonizers because of her position as “a poor white girl”. This exclusion sometimeshelps her in opposing the norms and values that are imposed by the society, for example thelack of social and sexual liberty for women. Her behavior can however, in some regards, beviewed as a confirmation of the racist roles that exist in the colony. Having considered that, itis further argued that it is the description of the Chinese lover that is problematic, rather thanthe behavior of the female protagonist.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Elena Ferrante’s ‘Neapolitan Novels’, published in English between 2012 and 2015, tell the coming-of-age story of two women born in a poor neighbourhood in post-war Naples. The international success of this four-part series of novels – named in the Italian edition after the title of the first novel, L’amica geniale (‘My Brilliant Friend’) – testifies to the enduring popularity of the urban poor of Naples as a literary subject. This article discusses several key issues of urban poverty that emerge from the series (i.e. social exclusion, ghettoization, widespread illegality, endemic violence and women’s oppression) and analyses how they are narrated, drawing on two classic texts of ethnographic scholarship: Thomas Belmonte’s The Broken Fountain (1979) and Italo Pardo’s Managing Existence in Naples (1996). In doing so, it reconsiders Ferrante’s narrative from a socio-anthropological perspective and assesses her ‘ethnographic imagination’ vis-à-vis two opposing tendencies in the literature about the urban poor of Naples: one geared towards stigmatization and the other towards romanticization. The article thus argues that the ‘Neapolitan Novels’ offer a refreshing take on a deeply stereotyped subject, countering (at least in part) the process of ‘othering’ that traditionally affects the literary representation of Naples’ urban poor.

Abstract:"In his novel, Machines Like Me (2019), Ian McEwan offers an interesting example of “alternate history” while dealing with crucial ethical issues connected with the development of Artificial Intelligence. Instead of setting his story in the future, the author chooses to set it in the past, but he radically changes the contours of the latter. Hence, the England of the early 1980s is turned into a technologically advanced society, well ahead of the scientific progress of the early 21st century. Thus, the future casts its light on the past in what appears as a typically postmodernist mélange: besides mingling genres (from speculative fiction to uchronia), McEwan also performs an intriguing hybridization of fact and fiction. The paper intends to explore the rich historical dimension of the novel, which betrays the author’s interest in the reflection on history and on its narrativization – as well as its manipulation and/or contamination – within the literary text."

Abstract:Abstract Despite scholarly recovery of many nineteenth-century women writers, especially those publishing mainly in periodicals, the fiction, travel writing and journalism of Fanny Van de Grift Stevenson (1840–1914) are still neglected. Situating Van de Grift Stevenson in the context of late nineteenth-century US periodical culture, this article considers how many of the author’s periodical writings cross not only geographical but also generic boundaries. Van de Grift Stevenson’s periodical publishing appears in a variety of modes and genres, at times with journalistic material entering her fiction, domestic life including recipes inserted in her journalism, and autobiography glimpsed in both fiction and journalism. The article examines this author’s transatlantic periodical writings in the context of gender and genre, noting the ways in which these categories intersect throughout her authorship. Focusing especially on the author’s regional writing as seen in her non-fiction ‘cookbook articles’ Ramblings of a Housewife and the short story ‘The Warlock’s Shadow’, the article argues that Van de Grift Stevenson’s blending of regional and domestic modes of writing presents a specific interrogation of cultural and geographical identities.

Abstract:This essay mainly focuses on the female writings in the 19th and 20th century that are represented by Jane Eyre and Wide Sargasso Sea, considering the strong connections between them. In particular, the stark contrasts between the two fictions’ settings, plots and attitude toward love and female identities leave plenty room for exploring the interconnections. In Chapter One, the essay will introduce the two fictions briefly, and reveal the mirror image relationship between the two heroines. Chapter Two will devote to identifying the commonalities behind the aforementioned characters, pointing out a potential female writing paradigm among contemporary female writers. Despite the overlapping features with male writing paradigm, topics usually focusing on marriages and the large proportion of mean women figures mark the uniqueness of the paradigm that belongs to females. Based on the two features, Chapter Three will postulate the exclusion mindset among female writers, and explain the possible historical and psychological reasons behind this theory. Chapter Four will offer a glimpse at a growing woman consensus under the discrepancies by discussing two women figures in the two fictions, who shed light into the awakening female wisdom. Finally, Chapter Five will focus on the collective identity recognition concluded from female writers, and bring up the continuing problem in female communities.

Abstract:Charlotte Perkins Gilman is one of the representative feminist writers in the United States. Her novel Herland constructs a utopian society for women and breaks binary opposition between men and women. This thesis analyzes from two different perspectives -- space and environment, and ideology in a woman-dominated country to reveal the ability of females’ deconstruction of dualism and reconstruction of equality rebuild between people and nature, and between men and women with subjectivity and agency of women. On the other hand, by comparing patriarchal ideology in reality and feministic thoughts in Herland, this thesis also aims to reveal the advancement in this feminist utopia, thus indicating the practical significance of the novel as a social criticism by creating a female dominated utopia to explore the ways to solve the various social problems in patriarchal United States.
