Abstract:The tectono-sedimentary relationships of the deposits of the early stages of the infill of the easternmost Cameros Basin (Late Jurassic-Early Cretaceous, N Spain) are analysed. In this area, some syn-sedimentary intrabasin normal faults developed during deposition of, at least, the lowermost lithostratigraphic units, the Tera and Oncala Grs (Tithonian-Berriasian). Detailed geological map, cross-sections and stratigraphic analysis show that subvertical faults striking N110o–130o controlled sedimentation and produced significant and larger sediment thickness southwestwards. For example, the most important fault in the study area, the Peña Cofrades fault, produced a thickness increase from 1530 m in the areas to the northeast of the fault to 3610 m to the southwest. Moreover, the sedimentological analysis shows that the palaeoenvironments developed in each unit (alluvial, fluvial and lacustrine in the Tera Gr, and coastal salinas in the Oncala Gr) were similar all along the study area regardless of the subsidence rates in the different areas, indicating that high sedimentation rates compensated the creation of accommodation space. Nevertheless, subtle sedimentological differences are recognized. In the Tera Gr, fluvial siliciclastic sediments were predominantly accumulated in the areas located southwest of the faults, whereas lacustrine carbonates were developed more extensively in the areas northeast of the faults. In the uppermost Tera Gr and in the Oncala Gr, desiccation mudcracks, evaporites and stromatolites are more abundant in the areas to the northeast of the faults, suggesting that lower subsidence rates caused more frequent and prolonged subaerial exposure, produced higher evaporation/water input rates, and created more favourable conditions for stromatolite development.
