Abstract:Begonia pseudoedulis, a new species in Begonia sect. Platycentrum (Klotzsch) A.DC. (Begoniaceae) from southern Guangxi of China, is here described and illustrated. It morphologically resembles B. edulis H.Lév. and B. dielsiana E.Pritz. ex Diels but differs easily by its hairy petioles and inflorescences, and red hispidulous flower tepals, ovary and capsules. The molecular phylogenetic analysis based on ITS supported that the new species was a monophyletic lineage, separating from both B. dielsiana and B. edulis. Due to its isolated distribution with several small populations, which are possibly disturbed by human activities, the species is considered as “Near Threatened” (NT) according to the IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria.

Abstract:Ex situ conservation in urban areas is an essential complementary approach to in situ conservation in wild areas. In this study, we combined multiple approaches, including vegetation investigations for both natural habitats and urban green spaces, eco-physiological experiments and remote sensing investigations for urban green spaces, to identify potential habitats for introducing the endangered plant species Calycanthus chinensis to urban green spaces. The results showed that (1) C. chinensis prefer living under sparse forests with canopy densities of 20-60%; (2) C. chinensis was not a shade tolerant species due to its chlorophyll a/b ratio (2.58) being higher than the threshold (2.3) for shade tolerant species; (3) the large and thin leaves of C. chinensis are easily damaged by strong wind, so this species can only live under moderate canopy cover; (4) to maintain a sparse crown for the well-being of C. chinensis, the upper layer trees in urban green spaces need to be thinned slightly; and (5) introducing this endangered species increases biodiversity and ecosystem services of urban green spaces. Finally, this study provides a framework and a case study for using urban green spaces as micro-refuges for endangered species.

Abstract:Impatiens sigmoidea was described in 1908 by the eminent British plant taxonomist J. D. Hooker based on specimens collected by the French missionaries E. M. Bodinier et al. from Guizhou, China. However, there has been no other records since then. After years of concern, we rediscovered I. sigmoidea in one of its type localities, Gao-po Town, in 2018. A revised description, colour photographs and a provisional IUCN Red List assessment of this species are provided, along with discussions of its geographical distribution, ecology and morphological comparison with I. lasiophyton. The lectotype of I. sigmoidea is also designated here. The rediscovery provides an essential basis for enriching the botanical resources of the genus Impatiens.

[Population Structure and Community Characteristics of Pseudotaxus Chienii in Fengyangshan National Natural Reserve].

Abstract:Pseudotaxus chienii, an endemic plant in China, is one of the second grade state protection wild plants, and distributes in Fengyangshan Natural Reserve as one of its concentrative dwelling places. A survey in the region was carried out on 10 communities, which were dominated by P. chienii. The analysis on its size structure, spatial distribution pattern and community characteristics showed that the populations of P. chienii could grow in the communities dominated by Rhododendron simiarum, Fokienia hodginsii-R. simiarum, and evergreen broad-leaved forests. In R. simiarum communities, the size structure, survival curve, and overwhelming community distribution pattern of P. chienii showed a sustaining development, while in communities dominated by F. hodginsii-R. simiarum, though the size structure was declining, the survival curve was Deevy- III type. Plenty of plantlets were still existed, and the populations kept steady. Two types were considered to be the most suitable ones for P. chienii populations. The important value of P. chienii reached 5% - 10%. In evergreen broad-leaved forests, the populations of P. chienii showed to be a declining type, and the survival curve was Deevy- II type. The distribution pattern was random, indicating that P. chienii populations could not fit for survive in this kind of communities. Correlation analysis showed that P. chienii populations had a positive correlation with R. simiarum and F. hodginsii, but a negative correlation with Cyclobalanopsis stewardiana and Schima superba. P. chienii could associate to the habits with the community canopy density of about 0.6 - 0.8. From the results mentioned above, the populations of P. chienii could be able to sustain and develop, and the existing habitat in Fengyangshan should be protected effectively. The protection of P. chienii requires more basic work to establish efficient measures to protect its habitat.
Comparative Studies on the Ecological Strategies of an Endangered Species Changium Smyrnioides and a Non-Endangered Species Anthriscus Sylvestris

Abstract:Changium smyrnioides Wolff, a monotypic species of family Umbellaceae, has a narrow distribution area and can found only in Yangtze River basin in China; the widespread Anthriscus sylvestris (L.) Hoffm can be found from temperate to subtropical zone in Asia, Europe and North America. Both species have fleshy roots, which are prized in Chinese medicine. Because of the land use, C. smyrnioides has now become an endangered species, while A. sylvestris do not endangered. Comparative studies on the ecological strategies based on the biological and ecological traits of the two species in present paper, aimed to find out the endangered mechanism of C. smyrnioides. Research was conducted at Hangzhou, Ningbo, Nanjing, Chuzhou and Anqing. The shoot of C. smyrnioides has only the basal leaf, which ensures it can capture light efficiently at ground level. The aboveground leaf area ratio (LAR_a) of C. smyrnioides was found to be higher than A. sylvestris, suggesting it can capture more light per unit of biomass. After spring time, C. smyrnioides loses its survival competitiveness as other herbaceous species can grow rapidly and impedes sunlight. C. smyrnioides is not a shade-tolerant species, that may explain why C. smyrnioides are typically found in small population under defoliated trees. Conversely, A. sylvestris can increase light absorption and out-compete other herbaceous by its distinct ability to expand densely and occupies extra horizontal and vertical space. In a word, C. smyrnioides is more effective in light capture and water acquisition than A. sylvestris, but the ecological strategy it with cause it specialized or overspecialized to the narrow environment, which were limited under the deciduous trees in subtropical evergreen broad-leaved forest zone in winter. As the human disturbance (digging for medicinal use and deforestation) becoming serious, C. smyrnioides becoming rare and an endangered plant.

Abstract:Based on the investigation of wild ornamental spermatophyte in Guangzhou,648 wild spermatophyte species were ornamental in Guangzhou,including 136 families and 393 genera.This paper evaluated their ornamental characteristics by AHP,and made suggestions that 109 species had high ornamental value which were devided into 4 types.The native plants such as colored leaves trees,ornamental fruit and flower plants,lianes,ground covers,sciophyte and honey plants had great potential in further exploitation and application in horticulture and Lunar New Year Flower market.Through full development,the human-arbor-shrub landscape harmonious development was promoted in deed.
Comparative Chloroplast Genomics of Seven Endangered Cypripedium Species and Phylogenetic Relationships of Orchidaceae.

Abstract:The species in the genus Cypripedium (Orchidaceae) are considered endangered, mainly distributed in the temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere, with high ornamental and economic value. Despite previous extensive studies based on both morphology and molecular data, species and sections relationships within Cypripedium remain controversial. Here, we employed two newly generated Cypripedium chloroplast genomes with five other published genomes to elucidate their genomic characteristics. The two genomes were 162,773-207,142 bp in length and contained 128-130 genes, including 82-84 protein-coding genes, 38 tRNA genes, and 8 rRNA genes. We identified 2,192 simple sequence repeats, 786 large repeat sequences, and 7,929 variable loci. The increase of repeat sequences (simple sequence repeats and large repeat sequences) causes a significant amplification in the chloroplast genome size of Cypripedium. The expansion of the IR region led to the pseudogenization or loss of genes in the SSC region. In addition, we identified 12 highly polymorphic loci (Pi > 0.09) suitable for inferring the phylogeny of Cypripedium species. Based on data sets of whole chloroplast genomes (IRa excluded) and protein-coding sequences, a well-supported phylogenetic tree was reconstructed, strongly supporting the five subfamilies of Orchidaceae and the genus Cypripedium as monophyletic taxa. Our findings also supported that C. palangshanense belonged to sect. Palangshanensia rather than sect. Retinervia. This study also enriched the genomic resources of Cypripedium, which may help to promote the conservation efforts of these endangered species.
Conservation introduction of Illicium difengpi, an endangered medicinal plant in southern China is feasible

Abstract:Illicium difengpi is an over-harvested and threatened medicinal plant endemic in economically poor karst regions in southern China. To assess the feasibility of conservation introduction of I. difengpi and its microhabitat requirements, this species were transplanted into three sites with the following characteristics: karst slope with soil (KSS), karst bare rock (KBR), and non-karst hill (NKH), and the properties of I. difengpi in the three conservation introduction sites and those of wild individuals in the original site (OH) were compared. The results showed that the survival, plant height, stem diameter at the soil surface, crown width, and total biomass of I. difengpi were significantly higher in the KSS site than in the KBR or NKH site. I. difengpi reproductive traits were also generally better in the KSS site than in the KBR or the NKH site. The contents of medicinal ingredients (quercitrin and magnolol) in different parts of I. difengpi were higher in the KBR site than in the KSS site, and were higher in the KSS site than in the NKH site. In , I. difengpi showed strong growth adaptability to the KBR site. I. difengpi performed poorly when transplanted into the NKH site but performed well when transplanted into the KSS site. We concluded that the conservation introduction of I. difengpi is feasible, which can offer a path to sustainable utilization of I. difengpi. If similar approach can be applied to other native rare and endangered medicinal plants in impoverished karst areas, it can promote regional economic sustainable development and plant conservation.

Abstract:Camellia longzhouensis (Theaceae) is an endemic evergreen shrub or small tree with a distribution restricted to South China. It is listed as Grade-II in the National Key Protected Wild Plants List. In this study, we surveyed its distribution, examined its population structure, identified factors affecting its survival, and reassessed its extinction risk. We found that C. longzhouensis was only distributed in the Nonggang National Nature Reserve and the surrounding area. Its individuals only grew under the secondary forest canopy in the karst mountain. A total of 58 individuals of C. longzhouensis in three sub-populations were found. Soil fertility and understory light availability were the main habitat factors influencing the survival of C. longzhouensis. Anthropogenic disturbances and reproductive obstacles have caused a low seed-setting rate, poor seedling survival, and a lack of adult plants of C. longzhouensis in the natural habitat. The population structure of C. longzhouensis is spindle-shaped, indicating poor natural regeneration and inhibited seedling recruitment. Cleistanthus petelotii had a significant positive interspecific interaction with C. longzhouensis in the community. Based on the information obtained here and IUCN criterion C2ai, we recommend that C. longzhouensis be categorized in the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List as Critically Endangered. We also developed a comprehensive protection strategy, consisting of in situ conservation, ex situ conservation, reintroduction, and commercial utilization. This strategy can be readily applied to protect other endangered plants with economic value in karst poor regions.

Abstract:Oreocharis leveilleana Fedde was collected in Ta-pin in 1910 and published in 1911. The collected location was verified within western Luodian County, Guizhou Province, China. However, there have been no records of the species' collection for more than 100 years since then. After extensive investigations by our research team on the type locality and its surrounding areas, we found that it is widely distributed in western Luodian County and eastern Wangmo County, Guizhou Province, China. During further research on the original literature, type specimens and type locality of O. leveilleana , the taxonomic position of O. leveilleana , which was once treated as a synonym of O. auricula (S.Moore) C.B.Clarke, was found to have a taxonomic problem. Through morphological research combined with geographical distribution analysis, it has been determined that it should belong to the genus Petrocodon Hance and it is the same species as P. coccineus (C.Y.Wu ex H.W.Li) Yin Z.Wang. According to the regulations and suggestions of the 2018 "International Code of Nomenclature for Algae , Fungi , and Plants (Shenzhen Code)", we propose and confirm a new combination – Petrocodon leveilleanus (Fedde) X.X.Bai & F.Wen and treat P. coccineus as a synonym of the new combination. Due to its unique bright red flowers within Petrocodon , its original Chinese name has been retained.

Abstract:Currently, Salvia daiguii is distributed in three populations, with total of about 500 plants and less than 250 mature individuals. Habitat OM and pH are indicators that significantly affect the growth and flowering of S. daiguii. Competition for niche characteristics of dominant plants in the community affects the growth and dispersal of S. daiguii. Finally, a comprehensive conservation strategies were developed, as the establishment of nature reserves, reintroduction, and public education, etc. Many species of Salvia have excellent ornamental, culinary, and medicinal values. Salvia daiguii, is an ornamental and highly medicinal perennial herb endemic to the prefecture‐level city of Zhangjiajie in Hunan Province, China, with a narrow geographical distribution. However, currently, it has only been assessed as a Critically Endangered species according to the IUCN classification criteria, but its conservation has not yet been studied. This study investigated the distribution and niche characteristics of S. daiguii, and compared the differences in growth, flowering characteristics, and soil nutrients between the wild and ex situ populations. We also analyzed the effects of soil nutrients on plant growth and flowering characteristics. During the survey, we found 274 individuals on a rock approximately 200 m from ZEFR1. Nevertheless, S. daiguii were still restricted in three populations, TNFP, TGM, and ZEFR in Zhangjiajie City, with a total of about 500 plants and less than 250 mature individuals. Our results show that aspects such as adverse environmental conditions, low seedling renewal rate, a lack of soil nutrients, and competition for the characteristic niche of this and other dominant plants in the natural community are the main ecological factors affecting the growth, flowering, and geographic distribution of S. daiguii. Based on the results of field surveys, we recommend that (1) S. daiguii be classified as Critically Endangered C2b and China's List of Plant Species with Extremely Small Populations. (2) Comprehensive conservation strategies were developed, such as the establishment of nature reserves, reintroduction, public education, and institutional development to provide management recommendations related to the conservation of S. daiguii and other endangered plants.

Abstract:The distribution of the rare and endangered perennial herb Primulina tabacum Hance is restricted to eight karst caves in southern China. To conserve P. tabacum and to evaluate possible reintroduction, we studied its historical distribution and conducted field surveys of both its biotic and physical environment. We used detrended correspondence analysis and canonical correspondence analysis to investigate the plant community structure and to identify the major environmental factors associated with its presence at eight sites and absence from three other sites where it formerly grew. The results revealed differences in community structure among sites and close correlations between species composition and environmental conditions. The data indicate that P. tabacum has special ecological requirements, including alkaline soil, low soil content of N, P, K and organic matter, low light, a high soil water content and high relative humidity, and a high atmospheric CO(2) concentration. Soil K content, relative humidity and atmospheric CO(2) concentration were the three variables most strongly associated with the vegetation composition and structure of the 11 sites. It appears that as a result of reductions in humidity, some of the historical localities of P. tabacum may no longer be suitable for reintroduction. Pilea notata, Pteris cretica var. nervosa and two moss species, Heteroscyphus coalitus and Gymnostomiella longinervis, were strongly associated with P. tabacum. The first two plants could be useful as indicators of suitable environments for P. tabacum, and the moss species could be useful as nurse plants for the reintroduction of P. tabacum into wild habitats.
