Abstract:Remaining useful life (RUL) prognosis is of great significance to improve the reliability, availability, and maintenance cost of an industrial equipment. Traditional machine learning method is not fit for dealing with time series signals and has low generalization and stability in prognostic. In this article, a novel ensemble long short-term memory neural network (ELSTMNN) model for RUL prediction is proposed to enhance the RUL prognosis accuracy and improve the adaptive and generalization abilities under different prognostic scenarios. The ELSTMNN contains a series of long short-term memory neural networks (LSTMNNs), each of which is trained on a unique set of historical data. A novel ensemble method is first proposed using Bayesian inference algorithm to integrate multiple predictions of the LSTMNNs for the optimal RUL estimation. The effectiveness of the ELSTMNN-based RUL prognosis method is validated using two characteristically different turbofan engine data sets. The experimental results show a competitive performance of the ELSTMNN in comparison with other prognostic methods.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to improve the accuracy, adaptability and generalization ability of Remaining Useful Life (RUL) prediction in industrial equipment. Traditional machine - learning methods perform poorly when dealing with time - series signals and have low generalization ability and stability in prediction. To solve these problems, the paper proposes a new model based on the Ensemble Long Short - Term Memory Neural Network (ELSTMNN), aiming to enhance the accuracy of RUL prediction and improve the adaptability and generalization ability in different prediction scenarios. Specifically, the main contributions of the paper include: 1. Proposing the ELSTMNN model, which captures and memorizes the hidden long - term dependencies in time - series signals by integrating a series of LSTM neural networks, thereby improving the accuracy of RUL prediction and the adaptability - generalization performance in different prediction scenarios. 2. Proposing for the first time a multi - model integration method using the Bayesian Inference Algorithm (BIA) to fuse the prediction results of multiple LSTM neural networks and infer the optimal online RUL. The paper verifies the effectiveness of the proposed ELSTMNN model through two turbofan engine data sets with different characteristics. The experimental results show that this model is competitive in RUL prediction and is superior to other prediction methods.
