Abstract:The uncertainty of water cloud feedback on radiative forcing is one of the largest obstacles to producing confident projections of the global climate. Sufficient measurements of water clouds are crucial to addressing this issue. However, existing techniques based on remote sensing or in-situ instruments face limitations in data capacity attributed to the short lifetime, high temporal variability, and complex vertical structure of water clouds. In this study, taking advantage of a dual-field-of-view (dual-FOV) high-spectral-resolution lidar (HSRL), we developed a novel algorithm to obtain diurnal simultaneous profiles of water cloud optical and microphysical properties with high temporal-spatial resolution. This technique does not rely on the widely-used subadiabatic assumption about the vertical structure of water clouds. The retrieval algorithm, validated by simulations and cloud radar measurements, was applied to field experiment data collected at the Beijing and Hangzhou sites in China. The relationship functions between water cloud properties are presented to enhance our understanding of the underlying processes. Furthermore, the vertical distributions of retrieved properties are compared to the subadiabatic assumption. The dual-FOV HSRL technique enables comprehensive observations, enhancing our understanding of water clouds and providing significant insights into the interactions among clouds, aerosols, precipitation, and radiation.
Torrential Rainfall Processes Associated with a Landfall of Typhoon Fitow (2013): A Three‐dimensional WRF Modeling Study

Abstract:In this study, Weather Research and Forecasting Model (WRF) with triply nested grid and the finest grid size of 3 km is utilized to simulate Typhoon Fitow (2013). The simulation is verified with available observations. The model well captures the track, eyewall, and rainband structures and also reproduces radar reflectivity and vertical profiles of temperature, water vapor mixing ratio, and winds. Area mean budget shows that water vapor convergence leads to condensation, which produces rainfall through accretion of cloud water by rain and melting of graupel. Over convective regions, water vapor convergence generates condensation, which feeds convective rainfall and supports transport of raindrops to stratiform regions through accretion of cloud water by rain. Over stratiform regions, melting of graupel and the transport of raindrops from convective regions are major sources for stratiform rainfall. The results are further strengthened by the analysis of the data in a storm‐following coordinate using different convective‐stratiform rainfall separation schemes.

Abstract:Using the latest version of Mesoscale Modeling System (MM5v3), we assimilated wind data from the scatterometer and built a model to assimilate the wind field over eastern China seas and adjacent waters and applied the wave model WAVEWATCH-III to test the sea area with assimilative wind and blended wind of QSCAT and NCEP as driving forces. High precision and resolution numerical wave results were obtained. Analysis indicated that if we replace the model wind result with the blended wind, better sea surface wind results and wave results could be obtained.

Abstract:The ability of an observationally-constrained cloud-system resolving model (Weather Research and Forecasting; WRF, 4-km grid spacing) and a global climate model (Energy Exascale Earth System Model; E3SM, 1-degree grid spacing) to represent the precipitation diurnal cycle over the Amazon basin during the 2014 wet season is assessed. The WRF model coupled with a 3-D variational data assimilation scheme reproduces the spatial variability of the precipitation diurnal cycle over the basin and the lifecycle of westward propagating MCSs initiated by the coastal sea-breeze front. In contrast, a single morning peak in rainfall is produced by E3SM for simulations despite the nudging of large-scale winds towards global reanalysis, indicating precipitation in E3SM is largely controlled by local convection associated with diurnal heating. The role of propagating MCS on the environment are discussed by using a multivariate perturbation analysis. We also find that the advection of moisture perturbations from ocean to inland regions have a higher correlation with the occurrence of MCSs in the Amazon than the intensity of colder air intrusion associated with sea breezes along the coast. Moreover, the presence of large cold pools over the central Amazon basin are responsible for the maintenance of propagating deep convection.

Abstract:Whistler mode waves are important for precipitating energetic electrons into Earth's upper atmosphere, while the quantitative effect of each type of whistler mode wave on electron precipitation is not well understood. In this letter, we evaluate energetic electron precipitation driven by three types of whistler mode waves: plume whistler mode waves, plasmaspheric hiss, and exohiss observed outside the plasmapause. By quantitatively analyzing three conjunction events between Van Allen Probes and POES/MetOp satellites, together with quasi‐linear calculation, we found that plume whistler mode waves are most effective in pitch angle scattering loss, particularly for the electrons from tens to hundreds of keV. Our new finding provides the first direct evidence of effective pitch angle scattering driven by plume whistler mode waves and is critical for understanding energetic electron loss process in the inner magnetosphere. We suggest the effect of plume whistler mode waves be accurately incorporated into future radiation belt modeling.

Abstract:Significant Wave Height (SWH) is crucial for many human activities, such as marine navigation, offshore operations, and coastal management. Traditionally, SWH is modeled using numerical wave models, which, while accurate, are computationally intensive and constrained by incomplete physical representations of wave spectral evolution. This study introduces a simple global deep learning-based model for SWH, which uses the current SWH field and the wind field at the next time step as inputs to predict the SWH field at the next time step. This approach mirrors the rolling prediction strategy of numerical wave models. After training on a re-analysis dataset, the errors of the model diverge lightly with time when given a good initial field because no spectral information is used. However, after diverging for ~200 hours, the errors stabilize, remaining comparable to those of state-of-the-art numerical wave models. Additionally, the error divergence can be mitigated through the assimilation of altimeter measurements. This deep learning model can not only serve as an efficient surrogate for traditional numerical wave models but also provide a baseline for statistical modeling of global SWH due to its simplicity in inputs and outputs.

Machine Learning Global Simulation of Nonlocal Gravity Wave Propagation

Abstract:Global climate models typically operate at a grid resolution of hundreds of kilometers and fail to resolve atmospheric mesoscale processes, e.g., clouds, precipitation, and gravity waves (GWs). Model representation of these processes and their sources is essential to the global circulation and planetary energy budget, but subgrid scale contributions from these processes are often only approximately represented in models using parameterizations. These parameterizations are subject to approximations and idealizations, which limit their capability and accuracy. The most drastic of these approximations is the "single-column approximation" which completely neglects the horizontal evolution of these processes, resulting in key biases in current climate models. With a focus on atmospheric GWs, we present the first-ever global simulation of atmospheric GW fluxes using machine learning (ML) models trained on the WINDSET dataset to emulate global GW emulation in the atmosphere, as an alternative to traditional single-column parameterizations. Using an Attention U-Net-based architecture trained on globally resolved GW momentum fluxes, we illustrate the importance and effectiveness of global nonlocality, when simulating GWs using data-driven schemes.

Abstract:Quantitative precipitation forecasting in numerical weather prediction (NWP) models is contingent upon physicals parameterization schemes. However, uncertainties abound due to limited knowledge of the precipitating processes, leading to degraded forecasting skills. In light of this, our study explores the application of a Swin‐Transformer based deep learning (DL) model as a supplementary tool for enhancing the mapping trajectory between the NWP fundamental variables and the most downstream variable precipitation. Constrained by the observational satellite precipitation product from NOAA CPC Morphing Technique (CMORPH), the DL model serves as the post‐processing tool that can better resolve the precipitation patterns compared to solely based on NWP estimation. Compared to the baseline Weather Research and Forecasting simulation, the DL post‐processing effectively extracts features over meteorological variables, leading to improved precipitation skill scores of 21.7%, 60.5%, and 45.5% for light rain, moderate rain, and heavy rain, respectively, on an hourly basis. We also evaluate two case studies under different driven synoptic conditions and show promising results in estimating heavy precipitation during strong convective precipitation events. Overall, the proposed DL model can provide a vital reference for capturing precipitation‐triggering mechanisms and enhancing precipitation forecasting skills. Additionally, we discuss the sensitivities of the fundamental meteorological variables used in this study, training strategies, and performance limitations.

Abstract:Physical modeling of precipitation at fine (sub-kilometer) spatial scales is computationally very expensive. This study develops a highly efficient framework for this task by coupling deep learning (DL) and physical modeling. This framework is developed and tested using regional climate simulations performed over a domain covering Montreal and adjoining regions, for the summers of 2015–2020, at 2.5 km and 250 m resolutions. The DL framework uses a recurrent approach and considers atmospheric physical processes, such as advection, to generate high-resolution information from low-resolution data, which enables it to recreate fine details and produce temporally consistent fields. The DL framework generates realistic high-resolution precipitation estimates, including intense short-duration precipitation events, which allows it to be applied in engineering problems, such as evaluating the climate resiliency of urban storm drainage systems. The results portray the value of the proposed DL framework, which can be extended to other resolutions, periods, and regions.

Abstract:To improve the assimilation accuracy of satellite microwave observations, it is necessary to conduct precipitation detection before assimilation and exclude the data contaminated by the scattering of hydromorphic particles. The induction of microwave scattering is closely related to the effective radius of hydromorphic particles, and the motion state of hydromorphic particles at different scales can directly affect the internal dynamic structure of clouds, which will lead to precipitation. To further analyze and validate the impact of microwave scattering in a precipitation environment on the assimilation of satellite microwave soundings within the temperature-sensitive band, this article utilized the on-orbit observations of Microwave Temperature Sounder-III (MWTS-III) and Medium Resolution Spectral Imager onboard the Fengyun-3E (FY-3E) satellite to achieve multispectral fusion observation and precipitation detection over oceans, combined with the vertical dynamic characteristics of global numerical forecast in the cloud environment of China Meteorological Administration (CMA) Global Forecast System (CMA-GFS). By conducting the dynamic analysis of the hydrometeors in the cloud, the maximum possible effective particle radius of hydromorphic particles under the no-phase-transition condition and internal vertical motion is obtained. The consistency of the cloud liquid water path (CLWP) retrieved by MWTS-III and multispectral fusion precipitation detection is evaluated subsequently. The results show that the distribution of hydrometeors in the CMA-GFS forecast is broadly in line with the CLWP distribution obtained from the MWTS-III retrieval, regardless of Mie scattering or Rayleigh scattering. However, compared with Mie scattering, the weak convection of CMA-GFS shows better adaptability in the Rayleigh environment.

Abstract:The tropospheric delay is a major error source for space geodetic techniques, and the performance of its modeling is significantly limited due to the high spatiotemporal variability of the moisture in the lower atmosphere. In this study, global modeling of the tropospheric zenith wet delay (ZWD) was realized based on surface meteorological data obtained from radiosondes and Global Positioning System (GPS) radio occultation (RO) measurements through the random forest (RF) and backpropagation neural network (BPNN) regression analysis. The modeling performance was further validated based on two kinds of global atmospheric profiles for the year 2020. Our results show that the ZWD modeling accuracy gained by two machine learning regression approaches is significantly improved by taking into account surface meteorological parameters, especially the surface water vapor pressure when compared to the Global Pressure and Temperature 3 (GPT3) model. When surface meteorological data are available, the RF-B model yields ZWD estimations with an overall agreement of 3.1 cm in comparison with the sounding profiles and 2.4 cm in contrast to the GPS RO atmospheric profiles. The RF-B is superior to other models based on surface meteorological parameters for ZWD calculation, e.g., the accuracy improves by 21.8–23.8% against the approach by Saastamoinen and 7–12.2% against the formula by Askne and Nordius.

Abstract:Abstract An unprecedented heavy rainfall event in China (“21.7” extreme rainfall event) was simulated using the global variable‐resolution model (MPAS‐Atmosphere) across the scales (4, 8, 16 and 50 km). Although almost all experiments at different resolutions reproduce the spatiotemporal characteristics of precipitation, the simulated precipitation intensity from high to low is 16, 8, 50, and 4 km, with the 16 km simulation being closest to the observations. Precipitation magnitude is prominently influenced by the difference in simulated large‐scale circulation across a range of grid spacings. Further analysis revealed that the differences in latent heating across scales affect the geopotential height and wind field by altering temperature. The latent heating in 4 km simulation is the minimum while the 16 km simulation is maximum. More latent heating release leads to the low‐level pressure depression, amplifies the water vapor flux convergence, produces stronger upward motion and more clouds, and ultimately results in stronger precipitation. The sensitivity experiments for turning off latent heating tendencies during the event showed that the latent heat release has positive feedback on the “21.7” heavy rainfall event. This study highlights the importance of scale‐awareness of latent heat at different resolutions and suggests that the difference in simulated latent heat release during the event is the main reason for simulated different atmospheric circulation and precipitation across scales.

Abstract:Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) provide a promising opportunity for real-time precipitable water vapor (PWV) sensing. However, relying on meteorological information restrains the implementation of real-time inversion from tropospheric zenith total delays (ZTD) into PWV. In this study, a stacked machine learning model for mapping ZTD into PWV in the absence of meteorological parameters is developed. The model performance is assessed and validated with information offered by ERA5 and radiosondes. An accuracy of better than 2.5 mm is achievable for the PWV values. Compared to the physical model which applies GPT3-derived meteorological parameters, the proposed model reveals an enhanced performance, especially in the high-latitude regions, with improvements of 28.1% and 22.2% when validated with ERA5 and radiosondes. This model is capable of fulfilling the demands of time-critical meteorological applications and is also promising for real-time PWV retrieval of other techniques that own the capability to sense ZTD.

Abstract:Extreme precipitation concerning typhoons brings great losses to coastal cities every year. How to accurately describe the natural cloud and precipitation processes in model remains a major challenge in typhoon forecasts. Observations found rain and hail can both exist under severe typhoon convections. But current operational forecasting models fail to take hail into consideration in super-typhoon prediction. This study assesses the performances of five typical bulk microphysical schemes (BMSs) of the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model in the forecast of Super-typhoon Lekima (2019) near landfall. Unlike other microphysical schemes, all the selected BMSs in this study incorporate seven hydrometeor species including hail, which can represent the hydrometeor distribution within natural super-storm more realistically as supported by field observational facts. Through statistical-physical evaluation processes and using radar-satellite joint observations, the goal is to identify the best scheme to accurately forecast Super-typhoon Lekima and to find the future avenue to possible microphysical scheme improvement. It is found that the WRF double-moment 7-class (WDM7) scheme exhibits the smallest root mean square error (RMSE) of approximately 1.5 for both composite reflectivity and brightness temperature signatures, and predicts the closest macro-physical hydrometeors structure, amplitude and location to observations. Moreover, the azimuthal mean brightness temperature distributions suggest large forecasting errors over typhoon inner rainband, with WDM7 scheme performing best. The vertical reflectivity profiles further suggest that WDM7 scheme could well characterize the updraft, water content, and cold-cloud processes, but needs further improvement in the representation of warm-cloud processes. The performances of BMSs are found to be closely related to the moments used to describe the evolution of the drop size distribution. Among all the schemes, the double-moment schemes generally perform better in simulating warm-cloud processes, while the single-moment schemes show better performance in simulating cold-cloud processes. As a partially double-moment and partially single-moment scheme, WDM7 scheme exhibits unique advantages over the others. The optimum choice of moments is an important step toward the future improvement of BMS.

Abstract:A new forward model (FM) was developed to characterize the influence of precipitation on L-band passive ocean surface measurements. The FM, which relates rain-induced brightness temperature (TB) variations to the rain rate and wind speed (WS), was established through a machine learning approach (referred to as the ML-FM). The soil moisture active passive (SMAP) data matched with integrated multisatellite retrievals for global precipitation measurement (IMERG) rain rate data and cross-calibrated multiplatform (CCMP) wind data were binned as a function of the rain rate, WS, and wind direction. The ML-FM was validated by comparing the simulated top-of-atmosphere (TOA) TB values with SMAP measurements. The results showed favorable agreement between the ML-FM outputs and SMAP data, with a root mean square error (RMSE) smaller than 0.55 K for both the horizontal and vertical polarizations. The validation results for ensuring more reasonable rainfall intensity distributions showed that the ML-FM returned stable results with a slightly reduced RMSE of ∼0.75 K for both the horizontal and vertical polarizations. Based on the ML-FM, we found that sea surface emission exhibited significant dependence on the rain rate for both polarizations. In addition, the ML-FM demonstrated signal saturation when the rain rate exceeded 45 mm/h, while precipitation slightly affected the directional characteristics of sea surface emission. These effects accounted for ∼0.3 K at a rain rate of 50 mm/h. Overall, our analyses demonstrated that the proposed ML-FM achieved superior performance in retrieving the TOA TB for both the vertical and horizontal polarizations with a higher accuracy than existing models.

Abstract:Abstract Different types of weather events, including tropical cyclones (TCs), mesoscale convective systems (MCSs), and atmospheric rivers (ARs), significantly impact precipitation patterns in East Asia. This study pioneers the application of deep learning (DL) methods, including convolutional neural network, U‐Net, and Attention U‐Net models, to simulate precipitation associated with these weather events. The spatial permutation method is also used to identify key meteorological variables for accurately generating precipitation in DL models. The DL models trained on all timeslots consistently surpass the performance of state‐of‐the‐art numerical simulations, although their efficacy slightly diminishes during extreme weather events. This outperformance is attributed to the appropriate emphasis on key variables that capture precipitation processes, such as low‐level moisture and mid‐level pressure fields. However, new DL models trained separately for TCs, MCSs, and ARs using clipped precipitation as the output does not exceed the performance of the previous DL models. Among all input features, moisture variables contribute the most to precipitation at low intensity, while the importance of other variables increases for more intense precipitation, although some discrepancies vary across models and event types. The spatial results further reveal the detailed locations of variables that are essential for accurately simulating precipitation related to weather events, such as areas of high specific humidity and strong winds. DL models could also acquire useful information from region remote to the events to improve the simulation. Overall, DL models serve as promising tools for simulating and enhancing our understanding of precipitation patterns associated with various weather events in East Asia.

Abstract:Here we present the numerical methods, applications, and comparisons with observations and previous studies. It includes numerical analyses of shallow water equations, Sun's scheme, and nonlinear model simulations of a dam break, solitary Rossby wave, and hydraulic jump without smoothing. We reproduce the longitude and transverse cloud bands in the Equator; two-day mesoscale waves in Brazil; Ekman spirals in the atmosphere and oceans, and a resonance instability at 30° from the linearized equations. The Purdue Regional Climate Model (PRCM) reproduces the explosive severe winter storms in the Western USA; lee-vortices in Taiwan; deformation of the cold front by mountains in Taiwan; flooding and drought in the USA; flooding in Asia; and the Southeast Asia monsoons. The model can correct the small-scale errors if the synoptic systems are correct. Usually, large-scale systems are more important than small-scale disturbances, and the predictability of NWP is better than the simplified dynamics models. We discuss the difference between Boussinesq fluid and the compressible fluid. The Bernoulli function in compressible atmosphere conserving the total energy, is better than the convective available potential energy (CAPE) or the Froude number, because storms can develop without CAPE, and downslope wind can form against a positive buoyancy. We also present a new terrain following coordinate, a turbulence-diffusion model in the convective boundary layer (CBL), and a new backward-integration model including turbulence mixing in the atmosphere.

Global Distribution of Whistler Mode Waves in Jovian Inner Magnetosphere

Abstract:Whistler mode waves are suggested to play a dual role in precipitation loss and acceleration of energetic electrons in Jovian magnetosphere. Using the combined wave data from Juno and Galileo, we constructed global maps of whistler mode waves in the Jovian inner magnetosphere (M‐shell < 20). Whistler mode waves are found to be extensively present over M‐shells from 6 to ~13, peaking at ~10, and extend to magnetic latitudes at least up to 50°. The whistler mode wave intensity varies from a few pT to ~100 pT, similar to the intensity level at Earth. The new finding on the latitudinal extension of whistler mode waves indicates their potential effects on electron precipitation over a broad energy range from ~100 eV to several MeV. The newly constructed whistler mode wave spectra are crucial for evaluating the accurate role of whistler mode waves in energetic electron dynamics in the Jovian inner magnetosphere.

Abstract:Water shortage is a major problem facing the world. Artificial precipitation enhancement is an effective way to improve precipitation conversion rate, but the selection of artificial precipitation enhancement operation timing is the main difficulty, and the precipitable water vapor(PWV) is a major index. The variation of PWV is nonlinear and unstable due to complex factors, especially in the Qilian mountains in the northeastern part of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, so it is difficult to predict it accurately. Therefore, based on the analysis of the observed data of microwave radiometer in Qilian Mountains, a new combined model is constructed which considers both data decomposition and prediction of several single models in this research. In the data preprocessing stage, the complete ensemble empirical mode decomposition with adaptive noise (CEEMDAN) technique is used to decompose and de-noise the PWV sequence. In the prediction stage, four neural network with unique characteristics, back propagation neural network (BPNN), long short term memroy (LSTM), bidirectional gated recurrent unit (BiGRU) and temporal convolutional network (TCN), are selected to predict the decomposed data respectively. A variant of gray Wolf optimization algorithm (IGWO) is used to determine the optimal weight of the model, and finally the comprehensive predicted value is obtained by weighting calculation. Through the analysis of experimental results, in the longest 15-step prediction, compared with CEEMDAN-BP, CEEMDAN-LSTM, CEEMDAN-BiGRU, CEEMDAN-TCN, the prediction accuracy can be improved by 54.17%, 35.05%, 22.38%, 23.86%, respectively. Other step size prediction also achieves the highest prediction accuracy.
