Abstract:Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) or porous coordination polymers (PCPs) are defined as crystalline, open, coordination network architectures with potential voids. They have drawn momentous attention across several crossroads of material chemistry since their discovery, owing to an exciting plethora of application-oriented footprints left by this class of supramolecular network solids. The unmatched aspect of tunable coordination nanospace arising from the countless choice of pre-functionalized organic struts pertaining to varying lengths alongside multivariate coordination geometries/oxidation states of the metal nodes, bestows a distinct chemical tailorability facet to this class of porous materials. Amidst the two-decade long attention dedicated to the adsorption–governed purification of gases, the MOF literature has substantially expanded its horizon into the manifestation of industrially relevant liquid mixtures’ adsorptive separation–driven purification. Such chemical separation phenomena categorically encompasses high importance to the manufacturing and processing industry sectors, apart from the fundamental scientific pursuit of discovering novel physicochemical principles. Aimed at the energy-economic preparation of pure industrial feedstocks and their consequent usage as end products, structure–property correlations pursued in the alleys of coordination chemistry has led to major advancements in a number of critical separation frontiers, inclusive of biofuels (alcohol/water), diverse hydrocarbon mixtures, and chiral species. This comprehensive review summarizes the topical developments accrued in the field of MOF based liquid mixtures’ adsorptive separation phenomena, structure–selectivity relationships as well as the associated plausible mechanisms substantiating such behavior.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), which are constructed from metal ions/clusters with organic linkers, are in a stage from fundamentals to applications. The application of MOFs in liquid-phase adsorption/separation is one of the most significant headways in the environment and chemistry. Concerning tunable porosity, multiple functional sites and devisable host-guest interactions, goal-directed designs lead to task-specific MOFs and are requisite to perform precise molecular recognition in liquid-phase adsorption/separation. In this review, we give insights into the goal-directed design strategies of organic linkers and metal clusters for the elaboration of task-specific MOFs with targeting effects and high recognition capability, as well as the related progress of MOF-derived membranes. In addition, we put forward the cooperation of different recognition mechanisms to achieve high adsorption/separation performance. At the end, we address the challenges in these fields and propose the prospects and possible evolution for future development. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Separation is an important industrial step with critical roles in the chemical, petrochemical, pharmaceutical, and nuclear industries, as well as in many other fields. Although much progress has been made, the development of better separation technologies, especially through the discovery of high-performance separation materials, continues to attract increasing interest due to concerns over factors such as efficiency, health and environmental impacts, and the cost of existing methods. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), a rapidly expanding family of crystalline porous materials, have shown great promise to address various separation challenges due to their well-defined pore size and unprecedented tunability in both composition and pore geometry. In the past decade, extensive research is performed on applications of MOF materials, including separation and capture of many gases and vapors, and liquid-phase separation involving both liquid mixtures and solutions. MOFs also bring new opportunities in enantioselective separation and are amenable to morphological control such as fabrication of membranes for enhanced separation outcomes. Here, some of the latest progress in the applications of MOFs for several key separation issues, with emphasis on newly synthesized MOF materials and the impact of their compositional and structural features on separation properties, are reviewed and highlighted.

Abstract:Three metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with similar pore window diameters, [Cu(3)(BTC)(2)], MIL-47 and MIL-53(Al), are tested for adsorption of olefins, alkylnaphthalenes and dichlorobenzenes in the liquid phase. Selective adsorption of olefins is possible only on [Cu(3)(BTC)(2)] via pi-complexation on its open metal sites. This material shows a remarkable preference for cis-olefins over trans-olefins. All three MOFs have high affinities for alkylnaphthalene and dichlorobenzene isomers. Separation of 1,4-dimethylnaphthalene from other alkylnaphthalene isomers and of p- and m-dichlorobenzene can be carried out on both MIL-47 and MIL-53(Al), as shown with breakthrough experiments. For the alkylnaphthalenes, column experiments at different concentrations point to enthalpic interactions as important factors determining selectivity, and the occurrence of steric effects during the adsorption of 1,4-dimethylnaphthalene shows that its kinetic diameter approaches the pore diameter of the adsorbents. For the dichlorobenzenes, packing effects dominate the adsorption selectivity.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are known to be an intriguing class of organic inorganic hybrid porous solids, synthesized by the assembly of metal ions with organic linkers. MOFs exhibit remarkable properties, such as ultrahigh surface areas, structural diversity, excellent thermal stability, tuneable pore size and the availability of framework functionality, which make MOFs promising for the separation applications. MOFs have shown great potentials as efficient adsorbents and novel stationary phases in adsorption and separation. However, due to the submicron or micron size of most MOFs particles as well as their irregular morphology, the applications of MOFs as stationary phases for sample pretreatment and liquid chromatography were greatly limited. To overcome these obstacles, an effective strategy was applied to fabricate MOF-based composites, combining the excellent separation ability of MOFs with the specific properties of substrates. The substrate materials combining with MOFs included metal nanoparticles, metal oxide nanoparticles, silica, carbonaceous materials, polymers, quantum dots and so on. This review summarizes the current progress in the application of MOFs and their composites for adsorption, sample pretreatment and chromatographic separation. The main contents involve the types and preparation methods of MOF-based composites, the applications of MOFs and their composites in vapor and liquid phase adsorption, solid-phase extraction, solid-phase microextraction, gas chromatographic separation and high performance liquid chromatographic separation. The prospects of MOFs in separation science are also discussed.

Abstract:Porous materials such as metal-organic frameworks offer great potential for separation technologies. Over the past decade the synthesis of a large number of new structures has been reported but relatively little attention has been given to the application of these novel adsorbents as stationary phases in gas or liquid chromatography. In this work, we report on the potential of the metal-organic framework UiO-66 for the separation of cyclic isomers. The extremely high preferential retention of cyclic hydrocarbons of the aromatic’s and functionalized cycloalkane’s type is exploited to achieve difficult separations. Confinement effects play a crucial role in fine-tuning the adsorbent’s properties.

Abstract:Metal-organic framework materials (MOFs) are a class of microporous and crystalline materials with great potential for adsorption-based separations. Harnessing the separation ability of these materials in high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) requires the use of small and uniform particles in order to achieve good column packing. The well-known MOF material [Cu-3(BTC)(2)] is, however, typically synthesized as a polydisperse mixture due to its nucleation and growth mechanism. It is demonstrated how a new synthesis method for (Cu-3(BTC)(2)] enables the formation of the MOF inside the pores of silica beads often used in chromatography, leading to monodisperse silica-MOF composite spheres with a uniform particle size of 3 mu m. When employed as an HPLC stationary phase, this material combines the good column packing properties of the silica and separation ability of the MOF material.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) represent a fascinating class of solid crystalline materials which can be self-assembled in a straightforward manner by the coordination of metal ions or clusters with organic ligands. Owing to their intrinsic porous characteristics, unique chemical versatility and abundant functionalities, MOFs have received substantial attention for diverse industrial applications, including membrane separation. Exciting research activities ranging from fabrication strategies to separation applications of MOF-based membranes have appeared. Inspired by the marvelous achievements of MOF-based membranes in gas separations, liquid separations are also being explored for the purpose of constructing continuous MOFs membranes or MOF-based mixed matrix membranes. Although these are in an emerging stage of vigorous development, most efforts are directed towards improving the liquid separation efficiency with well-designed MOF-based membranes. Therefore, as an increasing trend in membrane separation, the field of MOF-based membranes for liquid separation is highlighted in this review. The criteria for judicious selection of MOFs in fabricating MOF-based membranes are given. Special attention is paid to rational design strategies for MOF-based membranes, along with the latest application progress in the area of liquid separations, such as pervaporation, water treatment, and organic solvent nanofiltration. Moreover, some attractive dual-function applications of MOF-based membranes in the removal of micropollutants, degradation, and antibacterial activity are also reviewed. Finally, we define the remaining challenges and future opportunities in this field. This Tutorial Review provides an overview and outlook for MOF-based membranes for liquid separations. Further development of MOF-based membranes for liquid separation must consider the demands of strict separation standards and environmental safety for industrial application.

Abstract:Metal organic framework (MOF) materials have attracted a lot of attention due to their numerous applications in fields such as hydrogen storage, carbon capture, and gas sequestration. In all these applications, van der Waals forces dominate the interaction between the small guest molecules and the walls of the MOFs. In this review article, we describe how a combined theoretical and experimental approach can successfully be used to study those weak interactions and elucidate the adsorption mechanisms important for various applications. On the theory side, we show that, while standard density functional theory is not capable of correctly describing van der Waals interactions, functionals especially designed to include van der Waals forces exist, yielding results in remarkable agreement with experiment. From the experimental point of view, we show examples in which IR adsorption and Raman spectroscopy are essential to study molecule/MOF interactions. Importantly, we emphasize throughout this review that a combination of theory and experiment is crucial to effectively gain further understanding. In particular, we review such combined studies for the adsorption mechanism of small molecules in MOFs, the chemical stability of MOFs under humid conditions, water cluster formation inside MOFs, and the diffusion of small molecules into MOFs. The understanding of these phenomena is critical for the rational design of new MOFs with desired properties.

Abstract:MOFs can separate O-2/N-2 mixtures via various mechanisms, making them a great candidate for many air separation applications. We show that the adsorptive behavior of MOFs can be classified based on whether they contain open metal sites (OMSs) and if those sites form a coordination bond with oxygen molecules. Existing data suggests that OMS MOFs that can bind O-2 have high O-2/N-2 selectivity, while OMS MOFs that cannot form such a bond have increased selectivity toward N-2. Monte Carlo simulations show that saturated metal site (SMS) MOFs selectively adsorb O-2 based on dispersion forces. Inaccuracies in simulations on nonbinding OMS MOFs are suggested as evidence that there are other nonbinding interactions impacting O-2/N-2 adsorption in OMS MOFs. Monte Carlo simulations on SMS MOFs are used to define a volume-weighted average pore diameter to establish clear correlations between complex pore size distributions and adsorptive properties.

Abstract:The high-efficiency separation of C2H2/CO2 has important research significance and industrial value. The currently reported metal–organic framework (MOF) adsorbents for the separation of C2H2/CO2 are generally based on unsaturated metal sites, strong hydrogen bonds or strong electrostatic interaction sites, which suffer from difficulties in combining selectivity and capacity. Significant efforts have been devoted to solving this trade-off effect, and considerable achievements have been made. Herein, we review the research progress of MOFs for C2H2/CO2 separation in the past few years according to the properties of the material structure, and prospect the future research directions.

Abstract:Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are a class of crystalline inorganic–organic hybrid materials that have demonstrated huge potential in gas separation due to their ultrahigh porosity, boundless chemical tunability, as well as surface functionality. Most gas separations realized in MOFs are under an equilibrium state and are dependent on the difference in thermodynamic affinities of gases to MOFs, whereas nonequilibrium separation such as kinetic and molecular sieving separation attracting growing attention in the past decade is achieved based on the difference in the size and diffusivity of gas molecules. In this perspective, we first discuss the pore size, temperature, and pressure effect on gas diffusion as well as nonequilibrium gas separation in MOFs. Second, we introduce current techniques reported to measure intracrystalline gas diffusivity. Third, we review recent progress in MOF-based nonequilibrium N2/O2 separation, CO2 capture, and hydrocarbon separation. In addition, we describe the hydrogen isotope separation based on kinetic quantum sieving in MOFs as a special scenario of kinetic gas separation. Lastly, we summarize general design strategies toward MOF-based nonequilibrium gas separation and propose several directions to advance the study in this exciting area.

Abstract:For more than a decade, researchers have been developing metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) in the form of pure MOF membranes as well as MOF-containing mixed-matrix membranes. MOF membranes have been used for H2/CO2 or C3H6/C3H8 separation, but relatively few MOF membranes enable the high-performance separation of CO2/N2, CO2/CH4, or N2/CH4. This article describes the use of in situ XRD analysis and molecular simulation to elucidate gas transport within MOFs and derivative membranes at the molecular level. In a review of recent studies by the authors and other research groups, this article examines the flexibility of MOFs initiated by activation, gas adsorption, and aging effects during gas permeation. This article also discusses the application of XRD analysis in conjunction with computational methods to investigate the CO2-MOF Coulombic interaction and its effects on CO2 separation. Note that this combined analysis approach is also useful in studying the effects of linker rotation on N2/CH4 separation. This article also examines the use of computational tools in identifying new MOFs for gas separation and, more importantly, in elaborating the relationship between the structure of MOFs and their corresponding gas transport properties.

Abstract:Separation of gaseous hydrocarbons gets involved in many important industrial processes for manufacturing chemicals, polymers, plastics and fuels, which are performed through cryogenic distillations and are heavily energy-intensive. Adsorption-based gas separation technology by adsorbent materials can potentially fulfill a much energy-efficient gas separation. As a new generation of adsorbent materials, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been demonstrated to have their great potentials in addressing important gas separations of hydrocarbons. In this review, we outline the uniqueness of MOF adsorbents for their separation application for gaseous hydrocarbons. A variety of microporous MOFs have been developed for separating gaseous hydrocarbons, which have been achieved by fine tuning their pore sizes for high molecular sieving effects and/or immobilizing binding sites on their pore surfaces for their specific recognition of small molecules. We highlight herein recent important progresses in this very important topic, focusing on those for ethylene, propylene, and butadiene separation.

Abstract:Microporous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are comparatively new porous materials. Because the pores within such MOFs can be readily tuned through the interplay of both metal-containing clusters and organic linkers to induce their size-selective sieving effects, while the pore surfaces can be straightforwardly functionalized to enforce their different interactions with gas molecules, MOF materials are very promising for gas separation. Furthermore, the high porosities of such materials can enable microporous MOFs with optimized gas separation selectivity and capacity to be targeted. This Focus Review highlights recent significant advances in microporous MOFs for gas separation.

Abstract:The supermolecular building layer (SBL) approach was employed to deliberately synthesize five novel metal–organic frameworks (1–5) with an exposed array of amide or amine functionalities within their pore system. The ability to decorate the pores with nitrogen donor moieties offers potential to evaluate/elucidate the structure–adsorption property relationship. Two MOF platforms, eea-MOF and rtl-MOF, based on pillaring of kgm-a or sql-a layers with heterofunctional 3-connected organic building blocks were targeted and constructed to purposely introduce and expose the desired amide or amine functionalities. Interestingly, gas adsorption properties of eea-MOF-4 (1) and eea-MOF-5 (2) showed that by simply altering the nitrogen donor position within the ligand, it is possible to relatively reduce the pore size of the related eea-MOF material and subsequently increase the associated CO2 uptake. The slightly confined pore space in 2, relative to 1, has enabled an enhancement of the pore local charge density and thus the observed relative increase in the CO2 and H2 isosteric heat of adsorption (Qst). In addition, light hydrocarbon adsorption studies revealed that 2 is more selective toward C2H6 and C3H8 over CH4 than 1, as exemplified for C2H6 : CH4 (5 : 95) or C3H8 : CH4 (5 : 95) binary gas mixtures.
