Abstract:Cation-Disordered rocksalts (DRXs) cathode materials have attracted a lot of attention due to their high specific capacity, low cost with the utilization of earth abundance elements. Unlike the traditional Li-excess layered oxide materials, various factors could make impact of the formation of DRXs materials which contribute to the different electrochemical performance. Among those factors, the consist of elements with no d electrons, denote as the d0, is essential consensus by research community. However, it is still equivocal on the d0-TM concentration applying to the DRXs materials and the substantial influence of the structure stability as well as the electrochemical properties . Herein, a systematic study is performed on a series of Li1.2Mn0.43+TixMn0.4-x4+O2 DRXs materials with varying the content of Ti4+. Electrochemical research discloses the Li1.2Mn0.43+Ti0.1Mn0.34+O2 (x=0.1, written as MT1) exhibits excellent performance and cycling stability. Charge compensation process, including both Mn3+/Mn4+ cationic redox (Mn3+/Mn4+) and oxygen redox, and structure stability within MT1 during charging-discharging are clarified by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and in-situ X-ray diffraction (XRD) characterization results, respectively. The fundamental understanding is also performed using Density functional theory (DFT) calculations as the implement which revealed that MT1 has a lower Li+ diffusion energy barrier and thermodynamic transition state stability among these compounds. These thorough studies offer crucial information for comprehending DRXs cathodes materials for Li-ion batteries (LIBs) that have excellent structural stability. Our research unveiled the concentration of d0 elements play a crucial part in the DRXs materials which provide a strategy of rational design Li-excess DRXs materials towards advanced energy storage systems.
