Abstract:Recent years have witnessed numerous technical breakthroughs in electronics, computing, sensing, robotics, control, signal processing, and communications. These have significantly advanced the state of applications of intelligent transportation systems. More recently, as one leading effort toward the cyber-physical-social system, the concept of intelligent transportation spaces was proposed to further improve the vehicles, traffic, and transportation safety, efficiency and sustainability. ITSp integrate not only various ITS modules, but also pedestrians, vehicles, roadside infrastructures, traffic management centers, sensors, and satellites. With distributed and pervasive intelligence, ITSp clearly impose some stringent requirements on the information exchange among all entities within the ITSp, in terms of the information availability, reliability, fidelity, and timeliness. These requirements, together with the high mobility of vehicles and the highly variable network topology, make the communications and networking for ITSp very challenging. This article will introduce the concept of ITSp and analyze possible communication technology candidates for ITSp. Further discussions will also be provided at the end of this article.

Abstract:With the emergence of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) and wireless embedded sensing devices into modern vehicles, Intelligent Transport System (ITS) becomes a reality and an indispensable component of smart cities. The purpose of ITS is to improve road safety and traffic efficiency as well as offering infotainments services. In fact, warning drivers in the right time about dangerous situations on the road and providing them with prior information about traffic will undoubtedly leads to enhance driver's safety and reduce traffic congestion. Technically speaking, ITS is based on self-organizing wireless networks, known as vehicular ad-hoc networks (VANETs). Mobile vehicles in VANET might play the role of stationary sensors in infrastructure-based networks. They can detect, gather and disseminate real-time data about traffic, driving conditions and potential hazards on roads. In this respect, we review in this study, recent developments on the design of VANET protocols and applications. We first introduce the architecture of VANETs then we review their unique characteristics and applications. Thereafter, we discuss the main research challenges and open issues to be considered for designing efficient and a cost-effective VANET protocols and applications.

Abstract:As we move towards autonomous vehicles, a reliable Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) communication framework becomes of paramount importance. In this paper we present the development and the performance evaluation of a real-world vehicular networking testbed. Our testbed, deployed in the heart of the City of Bristol, UK, is able to exchange sensor data in a V2X manner. We will describe the testbed architecture and its operational modes. Then, we will provide some insight pertaining the firmware operating on the network devices. The system performance has been evaluated under a series of large-scale field trials, which have proven how our solution represents a low-cost high-quality framework for V2X communications. Our system managed to achieve high packet delivery ratios under different scenarios (urban, rural, highway) and for different locations around the city. We have also identified the instability of the packet transmission rate while using single-core devices, and we present some future directions that will address that.

Abstract:Rapid advances in wireless communication technologies coupled with ongoing massive development in vehicular networking standards and innovations in computing, sensing, and analytics have paved the way for intelligent transportation systems (ITS) to develop rapidly in the near future. ITS provides a complete solution for the efficient and intelligent management of real-time traffic, wherein sensory data is collected from within the vehicles (i.e., via their onboard units) as well as data exchanged between the vehicles, between the vehicles and their supporting roadside infrastructure/network, among the vehicles and vulnerable pedestrians, subsequently paving the way for the realization of the futuristic Internet of Vehicles. The traditional intent of an ITS system is to detect, monitor, control, and subsequently reduce traffic congestion based on a real-time analysis of the data pertinent to certain patterns of the road traffic, including traffic density at a geographical area of interest, precise velocity of vehicles, current and predicted travelling trajectories and times, etc. However, merely relying on an ITS framework is not an optimal solution. In case of dense traffic environments, where communication broadcasts from hundreds of thousands of vehicles could potentially choke the entire network (and so could lead to fatal accidents in the case of autonomous vehicles that depend on reliable communications for their operational safety), a fall back to the traditional decentralized vehicular ad hoc network (VANET) approach becomes necessary. It is therefore of critical importance to enhance the situational awareness of vehicular drivers so as to enable them to make quick but well-founded manual decisions in such safety-critical situations.

Abstract:Vehicular Ad-hoc network is a subclass of mobile Ad-hoc network (MANET), which provides a distinguished approach for the intelligent transport system (ITS). A dedicated short range of communication is a processing IEEE 802.11 based wireless technology that enables advanced active vehicle safety among other applications. A secure MAC protocol for VANET, with different message priorities for different types of application to access DSRC channels. The aim of the VANET is to enable dissemination of traffic information and road conditions as detected by independently moving vehicles. Dissemination of data is used to improve the quality of driving in terms of time, distance and safety. The proposed protocol provides wireless Ad-hoc and multihop communication using geographical position for addressing and packet forwarding. This protocol scheme is enhanced by safety application in vehicular environment.

Abstract:The service life and service quality of transportation infrastructures are crucial for the regular function and public safety of transportation systems. Thus, the intelligent and accurate evaluation, prediction, and analysis of transportation infrastructure service conditions have always been hot topics for transportation engineers, where such problems are sometimes hard to be solved using traditional approaches, considering different factors including complex traffic conditions, severe environmental conditions, etc. In recent years, intelligent technologies, including advanced sensors, novel artificial intelligent approaches (deep learning, etc.), the IoT-based monitoring and analysis platform, auto piloting, green energy, synergistic technologies, and systems integrating both traffic and infrastructures monitoring, have emerged as powerful tools in transportation engineering area. These efforts have greatly advanced the service convenience of public transportation, prolonged the service life of transportation infrastructures, and improved the efficiency and safety of transportation systems.

Abstract:Vehicular ad hoc networks ( VANETs ) and the services they support are an essential part of intelligent transportation. Through physical technologies, applications, protocols, and standards, they help to ensure traffic moves efficiently and vehicles operate safely. This article surveys the current state of play in VANETs development. The summarized and classified include the key technologies critical to the field, the resource-management and safety applications needed for smooth operations, the communications and data transmission protocols that support networking, and the theoretical and environmental constructs underpinning research and development, such as graph neural networks and the Internet of Things. Additionally, we identify and discuss several challenges facing VANETs, including poor safety, poor reliability, non-uniform standards, and low intelligence levels. Finally, we touch on hot technologies and techniques, such as reinforcement learning and 5G communications, to provide an outlook for the future of intelligent transportation systems.

Abstract:Vehicular networks attract a lot of attention in the research world. Novel vehicular applications need a suitable communication channel in order to extend in-vehicle capabilities and, be aware about surrounding events. However, these networks present some proprieties, such as high mobility or specific topologies. These properties affect the performances of applications and more effort should be directed to identify the final necessities of the network. Few works deal with application requirements which should be considered when vehicular services are designed. In this chapter this gap is filled, proposing an analysis of application requirements which considers available technologies for physical/MAC and network layers. This study contains key factors which must be taken into account not only at the designing stage of the vehicular network, but also when applications are evaluated.

Abstract:Vehicular ad hoc networking is an emerging technology for future on-the-road communications. Due to the virtue of vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure communications, vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) are expected to enable a plethora of communication-based automotive applications including diverse in-vehicle infotainment applications and road safety services. Even though vehicles are organized mostly in an ad hoc manner in the network topology, directly applying the existing communication approaches designed for traditional mobile ad hoc networks to large-scale VANETs with fast-moving vehicles can be ineffective and inefficient. To achieve success in a vehicular environment, VANET-specific communication solutions are imperative. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive overview of various radio channel access protocols and resource management approaches, and discuss their suitability for infotainment and safety service support in VANETs. Further, we present recent research activities and related projects on vehicular communications. Potential challenges and open research issues are also discussed.

Abstract:Vehicular networking provides the communication backbone for connecting vehicles with monitoring systems and other vehicles to exchange all types of information for safe and guided driving. Vehicle-to-infrastructure (V21 or v2i) is a bi-communication model that provides vehicles with road information delivered using infrastructure wireless nodes and vehicles over an ad hoc network (VANET). Similarly, vehi-cle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication allows motor vehicles to exchange locations and speeds with each other over wireless links to prevent collisions and traffic congestion. Vehicular networking employs dedicated short-range communications (DSRC) devices that operate in the 5.9 GHz band with bandwidth of 75 MHz and an approximate range of 300 meters. Wi-Fi is also a candidate technology to support data transmissions in vehicular communications. Recently, autonomous cars emerged as unmanned auto-driven vehicles that can connect to the environment and navigate to destinations without human intervention. This model of vehicular networking is referred to as vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communications. Cel-lular-V2X (C-V2X) is one of the next-generation technologies that stream data to vehicles over a cellular band for automated driving solutions. The initial C-V2X standard was completed by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) as part of Release 14 and 15. However, the emergence of fifth generation (5G) networks that support multiple radio interfaces of various technologies over many bands motivate new scenarios for V2X communications. Autonomous vehicle communications is supported by 5G as part of the Ultra-reliable and Low Latency Communications (URLLC) service slice. This means that we expect vehicles to be able to connect to 700, 3400–3800 MHz bands to comply with the transmission systems for the URLLC spectrum band. This implies new work that is necessary to define what could be the final architecture for V2X within 5G networks. In addition, the enablers for advanced safety features are higher throughput, higher reliability, multi-ple-bands and precise positioning, and very low latency. Those requirements are undergoing study as part of the incoming 3GPP Release 16.

Abstract:Modern society faces serious problems with transportation systems, including but not limited to traffic congestion, safety, and pollution. Information communication technologies have gained increasing attention and importance in modern transportation systems. Automotive manufacturers are developing in-vehicle sensors and their applications in different areas including safety, traffic management, and infotainment. Government institutions are implementing roadside infrastructures such as cameras and sensors to collect data about environmental and traffic conditions. By seamlessly integrating vehicles and sensing devices, their sensing and communication capabilities can be leveraged to achieve smart and intelligent transportation systems. We discuss how sensor technology can be integrated with the transportation infrastructure to achieve a sustainable Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) and how safety, traffic control and infotainment applications can benefit from multiple sensors deployed in different elements of an ITS. Finally, we discuss some of the challenges that need to be addressed to enable a fully operational and cooperative ITS environment.

Abstract:Intelligent vehicles are an application in which the words "intelligent autonomous systems" represent not only an important research topic but also a strategic solution to the mobility problems that may arise in the coming years. Vehicles that can move autonomously and navigate in everyday traffic, on highways, and in urban and unstructured scenarios will become a reality in the next few decades. Besides the obvious advantages of increasing road safety and improving the quality and efficiency of moving people and goods around, the integration of intelligent features and autonomous functionalities in vehicles will lead to major economic benefits, including reduced fuel consumption, efficient exploitation of the road network and reduced personnel. Furthermore, it is not only the automotive field (public transportation, trucks and automobiles) that is interested in these new technologies, but also other sectors, each with its own target (industrial vehicles, military systems, mission-critical systems and unmanned rescue robots). In this article, the author surveys the major intelligent vehicle projects and activities worldwide, covering not only automotive applications but also special vehicles.

Abstract:The intelligent Processing technique is more and more attractive to researchers due to its ability to deal with key problems in Vehicular Ad hoc networks. However, several problems in applying intelligent processing technologies in VANETs remain open. The existing applications are comprehensively reviewed and discussed, and classified into different categories in this paper. Their strategies, advantages/disadvantages, and performances are elaborated. By generalizing different tactics in various applications related to different scenarios of VANETs and evaluating their performances, several promising directions for future research have been suggested.

Abstract:Internet of Vehicles (IoV) is one of the most promising applications of Internet of Things (IoT) in the automotive industry, which can empower moving vehicles to exchange information with neighboring cars, roadside infrastructure, remote servers, traffic control centers, and so on. IoV expects to support a wide range of vehicular services, such as road safety, path planning, infotainment, and smart parking, which will play a vital role in intelligent transportation systems (ITSs) [1]–[3]. The main enabling platforms for IoV consist of dedicated short-range communications (DSRCs)-based networks and cellular networks (C-V2X). However, these terrestrial networks alone might not be able to support the vehicular applications well in all the cases and scenarios, due to the issues of limited coverage and capacity, as well as costly deployment.

Abstract:In recent years, intelligence has become an inevitable trend in the development of automobile industry, and advanced assistant driving or autonomous driving are important features of automobile intelligence. The increasing level of self-driving puts forward higher demands for in-vehicle communication. And traditional in-vehicle networks are difficult to cover a series of complex deterministic communication requirements including high-bandwidth, low latency, low jitter and zero congestion. Therefore, Automotive Ethernet technology came into being. IEEE developed a series of Time Sensitive Networks (TSN) standard protocols based on traditional Ethernet. TSN added a series of key mechanisms that provide realtime and reliability guarantees for data transmission. In this paper, we reviewed the evolution of in-vehicle networks and outlined the development of Time Triggered Ethernet (TTE) and TSN researches in recent years. We also discussed the importance of deterministic researches on in-vehicle networks and the challenges in the development of the Internet of Things, E/E (Electrical/Electronic) architectures, intelligent driving, and new energy vehicles.

Abstract:Vehicular networks are critical pieces in support of advanced intelligent transportation systems (ITS). These networks are formed by vehicles that can be connected to one another as well as to the infrastructure, and are subject to constant topology changes, disconnections, and data congestion. Each ITS application could have a different set of communication requirements, such as delay, bandwidth, and packet delivery ratio. Meeting these heterogeneous requirements in the complex dynamic environment of vehicular networks is a challenge. This paper develops a new framework for application-driven vehicular networks using 5G network slicing. We present the architecture of the proposed solution and design algorithms for heterogeneous traffic in a dynamic vehicular environment. Our simulations on realistic vehicular scenarios show significant improvements in network performance compared to the state-of-the-art approaches.

Abstract:The Internet of vehicles, the most important component of intelligent transportation system (ITS) in the future, is one of the most important technologies to achieve smart traffic and convenient travel for the people.With the vigorous development and continuous utilization of sensing and communication functions, the combination of these two functions, that is, integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) technology of vehicular communication networks, has become the current research hotspot and is of great significance to the development of ITS.Firstly, two different models of ISAC system, i.e., functional ISAC and signaling ISAC were defined and differentiated.Then, for the two different ISAC models, the existing works were reviewed and analyzed comprehensively.Finally, the future development directions and technical challenges of ISAC design in vehicular communication networks were proposed.
