Abstract:This paper describes a new magnetic trap for ultra-cold neutrons (UCNs) made from a 1.2 m long Halbach-octupole array of permanent magnets with an inner bore radius of 47 mm combined with an assembly of superconducting end coils and bias field solenoid. The use of the trap in a vertical, magneto-gravitational and a horizontal setup are compared in terms of the effective volume and ability to control key systematic effects that need to be addressed in high precision neutron lifetime measurements.

Abstract:A film of liquid helium on the surface of material traps for ultracold neutrons protects the neutrons from being absorbed by the trap walls. By using surface roughness and an electrostatic field, it is possible to maintain a helium film of sufficient thickness throughout the height of the trap. The field distribution near the tip of such wall roughness of the trap was calculated, and the effect of this field on holding the helium film was estimated.

Chiral Magnetic Effects in Nuclear Collisions

Abstract:The interplay of quantum anomalies with strong magnetic field and vorticity in chiral systems could lead to novel transport phenomena, such as the chiral magnetic effect (CME), the chiral magnetic wave (CMW) and the chiral vortical effect (CVE). In high-energy nuclear collisions, these chiral effects may survive the expansion of a quark-gluon plasma fireball and be detected in experiments. The experimental searches for the CME, the CMW and the CVE, have aroused extensive interest over the past couple of decades. The main goal of this article is to review latest experimental progress in search for these novel chiral transport phenomena at Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider at BNL and the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. Future programs to help reduce uncertainties and facilitate the interpretation of the data are also discussed.

Improving of ultracold neutron traps coated with liquid helium using capillarity and electric field

Abstract:To increase the storage time of ultracold neutrons (UCN) inside the material traps it is promising to cover the trap walls by liquid 4He, the material which does not absorb neutrons at all. A rough side wall of UCN trap holds the required amount of 4He by the capillary effects, but the edges of wall roughness remain insufficiently coated. Here we propose to apply an electric voltage to these rough side walls of UCN traps to increases the thickness of liquid He on the wall edges and to cover the entire wall surface by sufficiently thick helium films. This completely protects UCN from being absorbed inside the trap walls. We estimate the required electric field and voltage for several possible designs of UCN traps. This improvement may give rise to a new generation of ultracold neutron traps with very long storage time. We also estimate the influence of this electric field on the dispersion of ripplons - the quanta surface waves, which give the main contribution to the inelastic UCN scattering at low temperature.

Abstract:Nanowires of two-dimensional (2D) crystals of type-II superconductor NbSe2 prepared by electron-beam lithography were studied, focusing on the effect of the motion of Abrikosov vortices. We present magnetoresistance measurements on these nanowires and show features related to vortex crossing, trapping, and pinning. The vortex crossing rate was found to vary nonmonotonically with the applied field, which results in nonmonotonic magnetoresistance variations in agreement with theoretical calculations in the London approximation. Above the lower critical field H-c1 the crossing rate is also influenced by vortices trapped by sample boundaries or pinning centers, leading to sample-specific magnetoresistance patterns. We show that the local pinning potential can be modified by intentionally introducing surface adsorbates, making the magnetoresistance pattern a "magnetofingerprint" of the sample-specific configuration of vortex pinning centers in a 2D crystal superconducting nanowire.

Abstract:We report on storage of Very Cold Neutrons (VCN) in a trap with walls containing powder of diamond nanoparticles. The efficient VCN reflection is provided by multiple diffusive elastic scattering of VCN at single nanoparticles in powder. The VCN storage times are sufficiently long for accumulating large density of neutrons with complete VCN energy range of up to a few times 10(-4) eV. Methods for further improvements of VCN storage times are discussed.

Abstract:Propagation of an extraordinary electromagnetic wave in the vicinity of electron cyclotron resonance surface in an open linear trap is studied analytically, taking into account inhomogeneity of the magnetic field in paraxial approximation. Ray trajectories are derived from a reduced dispersion equation that makes it possible to avoid the difficulty associated with a transition from large propagation angles to the case of strictly longitudinal propagation. Our approach is based on the theory, originally developed by the Zvonkov and Timofeev [1], who used the paraxial approximation for the magnetic field strength, but did not consider the slope of the magnetic field lines, which led to considerable error, as has been recently noted by Gospodchikov and Smolyakova [2]. We have found ray trajectories in analytic form and demonstrated that the inhomogeneity of both the magnetic field strength and the field direction can qualitatively change the picture of wave propagation and significantly affect the efficiency of electron cyclotron heating of a plasma in a linear magnetic trap. Analysis of the ray trajectories has revealed a criterion for the resonance point on the axis of the trap to be an attractor for the ray trajectories. It is also shown that a family of ray trajectories can still reach the resonance point on the axis if the latter generally repels the ray trajectories. As an example, results of general theory are applied to the electron cyclotron resonance heating experiment which is under preparation on the Gas Dynamic Trap in the Budker Institute of Nuclear Physics [3].

Abstract:The confinement of ultracold neutrons (UCNs) in three-dimensional magnetic field gradient or magneto-gravitational traps allows for a measurement of the free neutron lifetime τ n with superior control over loss channels related to UCNs interacting with material surfaces. The most precise measurement τ n has been achieved using a magneto-gravitational trap, in which UCN are prevented from escaping at the top of their trap by gravity. More compact horizontal confinement geometries with variable energy acceptance ranges can be obtained by using steep magnetic field gradients in all spatial directions, generated by combinations of either permanent or (variable) superconducting magnets. In this paper, we present the first successful implementation of a pulsed spin-flip based loading scheme to fill a three-dimensional magnetic trap with externally produced UCN. The measurements with the τSPECT experiment were performed at the pulsed UCN source of the research reactor TRIGA Mainz. The extracted neutron storage time constant of τ = 859(16) s is compatible with the most precise determinations of τ n . We report on detailed, but statistically limited, investigations of major systematic effects influencing the neutron storage time. The statistical limitations are mitigated by the relocation of the experiment to a stronger UCN source.

Abstract:This paper considers an intense non-neutral charged particle beam propagating in the z-direction through a periodic focusing quadrupole magnetic field with transverse focusing force, −κq(s)[xêx−yêy], on the beam particles. Here, s=βbct is the axial coordinate, (γb−1)mbc2 is the directed axial kinetic energy of the beam particles, qb and mb are the charge and rest mass, respectively, of a beam particle, and the oscillatory lattice coefficient satisfies κq(s+S)=κq(s), where S is the axial periodicity length of the focusing field. The particle motion in the beam frame is assumed to be nonrelativistic, and the Vlasov-Maxwell equations are employed to describe the nonlinear evolution of the distribution function fb(x,y,x′,y′,s) and the (normalized) self-field potential ψ(x,y,s)=qbφ(x,y,s)/γb3mbβb2c2 in the transverse laboratory-frame phase space (x,y,x′,y′), assuming a thin beam with characteristic radius rb≪S. It is shown that collective processes and the nonlinear transverse beam dynamics can be simulated in a compact Paul trap configuration in which a long non-neutral plasma column (L≫rp) is confined axially by applied dc voltages V̂=const on end cylinders at z=±L, and transverse confinement in the x−y plane is provided by segmented cylindrical electrodes (at radius rw) with applied oscillatory voltages ±V0(t) over 90° segments. Here, V0(t+T)=V0(t), where T=const is the oscillation period, and the oscillatory quadrupole focusing force on a particle with charge q and mass m near the cylinder axis is −mκq(t)[xêx−yêy], where κq(t)≡8qV0(t)/πmrw2.

Abstract:Results of computer simulation of the structure of the electromagnetic field of a microwave discharge in a quartz bulb placed in a cylindrical resonator the plasma of which is confined by a magnetic trap are presented. The cold plasma approximation is used. The cylindrical resonator is excited through a narrow slot in the lateral wall. It is shown that the traditional model of the electron cyclotron resonance in crossed fields in the discharge under study is applicable at low electron densities. An increase in the density is accompanied by the formation of a wave propagating in the azimuthal direction from the excitation region. With a further increase in the electron density, the absorption coefficient of the wave decreases and the angular distribution of the field has the form of a standing wave.

Abstract:In the UCN{\tau} experiment, ultracold neutrons (UCN) are confined by magnetic fields and the Earth's gravitational field. Field-trapping mitigates the problem of UCN loss on material surfaces, which caused the largest correction in prior neutron experiments using material bottles. However, the neutron dynamics in field traps differ qualitatively from those in material bottles. In the latter case, neutrons bounce off material surfaces with significant diffusivity and the population quickly reaches a static spatial distribution with a density gradient induced by the gravitational potential. In contrast, the field-confined UCN -- whose dynamics can be described by Hamiltonian mechanics -- do not exhibit the stochastic behaviors typical of an ideal gas model as observed in material bottles. In this report, we will describe our efforts to simulate UCN trapping in the UCN{\tau} magneto-gravitational trap. We compare the simulation output to the experimental results to determine the parameters of the neutron detector and the input neutron distribution. The tuned model is then used to understand the phase space evolution of neutrons observed in the UCN{\tau} experiment. We will discuss the implications of chaotic dynamics on controlling the systematic effects, such as spectral cleaning and microphonic heating, for a successful UCN lifetime experiment to reach a 0.01% level of precision.

Abstract:Experiments are planned on the Paul Trap Simulator Experiment (PTSX) that simulates intense beam propagation through a periodic quadrupole magnetic field. In the Paul trap configuration, a long nonneutral plasma column is confined axially by DC voltages on end cylinders at z = +L and z = -L, and transverse confinement is provided by segmented cylindrical electrodes with applied oscillatory voltages /spl plusmn/V/sub 0/(t) over 90/spl deg/ segments. Because the transverse focusing force is similar in waveform to that produced by a discrete set of periodic quadrupole magnets in a frame moving with the beam, the Paul trap configuration offers the possibility of simulating intense beam propagation in a compact facility.

Abstract:The Paul Trap Simulator Experiment (PTSX) is a compact laboratory facility whose purpose is to simulate the nonlinear dynamics of intense charged particle beam propagation over large distances through an alternating-gradient transport system. The simulation is possible because the quadrupole electric fields of the cylindrical Paul trap exert radial forces on the charged particles that are analogous to the radial forces that a periodic focusing quadrupole magnetic field exert on the beam particles in the beam frame. Initial experiments clearly demonstrate the loss of confinement when the vacuum phase advance sigma(v) of the system exceeds 90degrees. Recent experiments show that PTSX is able to successfully trap plasmas of moderate intensity for thousands of equivalent lattice periods.
Dense stellar matter with trapped neutrinos under strong magnetic fields

Abstract:We investigate the effects of strong magnetic fields on the equation of state of dense stellar neutrino-free and neutrino-trapped matter. Relativistic nuclear models both with constant couplings (NLW) and with density dependent parameters (DDRH) and including hyperons are considered . It is shown that at low densities neutrinos are suppressed in the presence of the magnetic field. The magnetic field reduces the strangeness fraction of neutrino-free matter and increases the strangeness fraction of neutrino-trapped matter. The mass-radius relation of stars described by these equations of state are determined. The magnetic field makes the overall equation of state stiffer and the stronger the field the larger the mass of maximum mass star and the smaller the baryon density at the center of the star. As a consequence in the presence of strong magnetic fields the possibility that a protoneutron star evolves to a blackhole is smaller.

Abstract:Ultracold neutral atoms can be trapped in spatially inhomogeneous magnetic fields. In this paper, we present a theoretical model and demonstrate by using Landau-Zener tool that if the magnetic resonant transition region is very narrow, "potential barriers" appear and quantum reflection of such ultracold atoms can be observed in this region.
Channeling of Protons Through Carbon Nanotubes Embedded in Dielectric Media

Abstract:We investigate how the dynamic polarization of the carbon atoms valence electrons affects the spatial distributions of protons channeled in the (11, 9) single-wall carbon nanotubes placed in vacuum and embedded in various dielectric media. The initial proton speed is varied between 3 and 8 a.u., corresponding to the energies between 0.223 and 1.59 MeV, respectively, while the nanotube length is varied between 0.1 and 0.8 $\mu$m. The spatial distributions of channeled protons are generated using a computer simulation method, which includes the numerical solving of the proton equations of motion in the transverse plane. We show that the dynamic polarization effect can strongly affect the rainbow maxima in the spatial distributions, so as to increase the proton flux at the distances from the nanotube wall of the order of a few tenths of a nanometer at the expense of the flux at the nanotube center. While our findings are connected to the possible applications of nanosized ion beams created with the nanotubes embedded in various dielectric media for biomedical research and in materials modification, they also open the prospects of applying ion channeling for detecting and locating the atoms and molecules intercalated inside the nanotubes.

A trion in a magnetic field revisited

Abstract:We revisit the problem of a two dimensional trion in an external magnetic field. We demonstrate that the approximations used previously for finding the energy spectrum of this system break down in the experimentally accessible range of magnetic fields. It is shown that the neglect of the Coulomb-induced mixing of different Landau levels corresponding to non-interacting particles leads to a strong underestimation of the trion binding energies even at extremely high magnetic fields (hundreds of Tesla). Moreover, proper account of the Coulomb effects for certain values of the parameters can lead to the appearance of additional discrete trion states which were overlooked previously. Finally, we provide a database of the matrix elements necessary for calculation of the magnetotrion spectra for a wide class of materials.

A Technical Review of Penning Trap based Investigations in Neutron Decay

Abstract:This review is concerned with a detailed analysis of some of the technical problems which arise in the application of the Penning trap method to the experimental study of neutron $\beta $ -decay,a technique which was first successfully tested on the low-flux swimming-pool reactor LIDO (capture flux =3$\cdot 10^6$cm$^(-2)$s$^(-1)$) at AERE Harwell in the 1970's. It does not discuss the scientific merits or demerits of these studies. Of particular importance are the trapping and release of neutron decay protons, and the influence of magnetic mirror effects and radial drifting on the trapped particles. Since these have energies < 1 keV they must be accelerated to energies of order 20-30 keV following release, at which point they are recorded in a silicon surface barrier detector. However serious difficulties were encountered in the post-release acceleration process with vacuum breakdown in the presence of crossed electric and magnetic fields.

Possibility of quantum Hall effect in neutron star environment: A chiral model approach

Abstract:A high baryon density and strong magnetic fields are expected in peripheral collisions in heavy-ion collision experiments, such as the upcoming CBM experiment at FAIR in Germany and NICA in Russia. Such densities are also likely in the core of massive neutron stars, possibly with mixed quark-hadron phases. We employed the chiral effective model to obtain the constituent quark mass in this non-perturbative QCD regime. A quantized version of conductivity and resistivity is found reliable in the quantum domain of low density and high magnetic fields. Landau quantization gives rise to phenomena similar to SdH oscillations and quantum Hall effect in this regime. We have used a density-dependent magnetic field to observe SdH-type oscillations and the possibility of the quantum Hall effect in the interior of neutron stars where the magnetic field varies as a function of the baryon density. Our results indicate the possibility of observing the quantum Hall effect in a neutron star environment as well as in heavy-ion collision of CBM and NICA experiments.

Abstract:The current knowledge of the neutron $\beta$-decay lifetime has come under scrutiny as of late due to large disagreements between recent precise measurements. Measurements using magnetically trapped Ultra-Cold Neutrons (UCNs) offer the possibility of storage without spurious losses which can provide a reliable value for the neutron lifetime. The progress towards realizing a neutron lifetime measurement using a Ioffe-type trap made with a Halbach-type permanent octupole magnet is presented here. The experimental procedure extracts a gas of UCNs into vacuum, which reduces many known channels of neutron losses, and detects the neutron decays via in-situ detection of the produced protons.
