Abstract:Designing a nanofluidic membrane with high selectivity and fast ion transport property is the key towards high-performance osmotic energy conversion. However, most of reported membranes can produce power density less than commercial benchmark (5 W/m2), due to the imbalance between ion selectivity and permeability. Here, we report a novel nanoarchitectured design of a heterogeneous membrane with an ultrathin and dense zirconium-based UiO-66-NH2 metal-organic framework (MOF) layer and a highly aligned and interconnected branched alumina nanochannel membrane. The design leads to a continuous trilayered pore structure of large geometry gradient in the sequence from angstrom-scale to nano-scale to sub-microscale, which enables the enhanced directional ion transport, and the angstrom-sized (~6.6-7 Å) UiO-66-NH2 windows render the membrane with high ion selectivity. Consequently, the novel heterogeneous membrane can achieve a high-performance power of ~8 W/m2 by mixing synthetic seawater and river water. The power density can be largely upgraded to an ultrahigh ~17.1 W/m2 along with ~48.5% conversion efficiency at a 50-fold KCl gradient. This work not only presents a new membrane design approach but also showcases the great potential of employing the zirconium-based MOF channels as ion-channel-mimetic membranes for highly efficient blue energy harvesting.

Abstract:Bioinspired nanofluidic devices have drawn increasing global interest due to their giant applicable potential in a wide range of fields. By mimicking biological prototype, it is expected to achieve high energy conversion efficiency and tunable ion transport. However, the low osmotic conversion efficiency, weak ion transport capability and poor mechanical performance limit practical application. We designed a class of heterogeneous membrane consisting of a support layer and a thin top layer to meet fundamental requirements. To achieve higher power generation, we incorporated metal organic framework (MOF) nanosheets (dispersed phase) into polymer matrix (continuous phase) to afford a mixed matrix top layer. This unique structure addressed the geometric restriction associated with the polymeric specie due to their limited pore accessibility. As a result, the presented membranes produced high power density of ca. 7 W m−2 and a high energy conversion efficiency of ca. 40% under a salinity gradient of 50 (0.5 M|0.01 M, NaCl). This work thus offers an insight into a new methodology in the development of a novel membrane technology for highly efficient energy conversion.

Abstract:Nanofluidic membranes have been demonstrated as promising candidates for osmotic energy harvesting. However, it remains a long-standing challenge to fabricate high-efficiency ion-permselective membranes with well-defined channel architectures. Here, we demonstrate high-performance osmotic energy conversion membranes based on oriented two-dimensional covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with ultrashort vertically aligned nanofluidic channels that enabled efficient and selective ion transport. Experiments combined with molecular dynamics simulations revealed that exquisite control over channel orientation, charge polarity, and charge density contributed to high ion selectivity and permeability. When applied to osmotic energy conversion, a pair of 100 nm thick oppositely charged COF membranes achieved an ultrahigh output power density of 43.2 W m-2 at a 50-fold salinity gradient and up to 228.9 W m-2 for the Dead Sea and river water system. The achieved power density outperforms the state-of-the-art nanofluidic membranes, suggesting the great potential of oriented COF membranes in the fields of advanced membrane technology and energy conversion.

Abstract:Nanochannel membranes exhibit significant potential in osmotic energy generation, however, achieving an optimal balance between ion selectivity and flux remains challenging. Herein, heterostructured MOFs@MXene nanochannels were prepared via an optimized anodic electrodeposition method, which demonstrated a significant advancement in osmotic energy generation. The unique oriented porous MOFs expanded the interlayer spacing of MXene. The inherent negative charged surface of MXene fostered a synergistic effect that substantially enhanced ion selectivity and flux, achieving a significant diffusion potential of 340.2 mV. These improvements enable the membranes to achieve an impressive power density output of 25.3 W/m2 2 at a concentration gradient of 106 6 in KCl and 17.2 W/m2 2 at a gradient of 500 in NaCl. Furthermore, the membranes demonstrate an energy conversion efficiency of up to 45.1 %. Such structural and functional advancements underscore the potential of these heterostructured nanochannels in robust and efficient osmotic power generation, paving the way for applications in sustainable energy technologies.

Abstract:Osmotic energy, as a renewable clean energy with huge energy density and stable yield, has received widespread attention over the past decades. Reverse electrodialysis (RED) based on ion-exchange membranes is an important method of obtaining osmotic energy from salinity gradients. The preparation of ion-exchange membranes with both high ion selectivity and ion permeability is in constant exploration. In this work, metal hydroxide-organic framework (MHOF) membranes are successfully prepared onto porous anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) membranes by a facile hydrothermal method to form Ni2(OH)2@AAO composite membranes, used for osmotic energy conversion. The surface is negatively charged with cation selectivity, and the asymmetric structure and extreme hydrophilicity enhance the ionic flux for effective capture of osmotic energy. The maximum output power density of 5.65 W m-2 at a 50-fold KCl concentration gradient is achieved, which exceeds the commercial benchmark of 5 W m-2. Meanwhile, the composite membrane can also show good performance in different electrolyte solutions and acid-base environments. This work provides a new avenue for the construction and application of MHOF membranes in efficient osmotic energy conversion.

Abstract:The development of advanced nanofluidic membranes with better ion selectivity, efficient energy conversion and high output power density remains challenging. Herein, we prepared nanofluidic hybrid membranes based on TEMPO oxidized cellulose nanofibers (T-CNF) and manganese-based metal organic framework (MOF) using a simple in situ synthesis method. Incorporated T-CNF endows the MOF/T-CNF hybrid membrane with a high cation selectivity up to 0.93. Nanoporous MOF in three-dimensional interconnected nanochannels provides massive ion transport pathways. High transmembrane ion flux and low ion permeation energy barrier are correlated with a superior energy conversion efficiency (36 %) in MOF/T-CNF hybrid membrane. When operating under 50-fold salinity gradient by mixing simulated seawater and river water, the MOF/T-CNF hybrid membrane achieves a maximum power density value of 1.87 W m −2 . About 5-fold increase in output power density was achieved compared to pure T-CNF membrane. The integration of natural nanofibers with high charge density and nanoporous MOF materials is demonstrated an effective and novel strategy for the enhancement of output power density of nanofluidic membranes, showing the great potential of MOF/T-CNF hybrid membranes as efficient nanofluidic osmotic energy generators.

Abstract:Controlling selective ion transport is core for developing novel membrane technologies for high‐efficiency ion separation and energy conversion, and biosensing applications. Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), an emerging family of porous crystalline materials with permanent porosity, Ångstrom‐sized pores and various functional sites, have been recently found to share some similar pore structures and functionalities analogous to biological ion channels. Extensive efforts have been made to develop new strategies for the construction of MOF‐based ion‐selective membranes for efficient ion separation and energy harvesting. Herein, in this progress report, the rational strategies for fabrication of MOF‐based membranes are introduced first, followed by the analysis of their capabilities for selective ion transport. Then, the applications of MOF‐based ion‐selective membranes for ion separation and energy conversion are discussed in detail. Finally, a summary and some recommendations for future directions in the field are presented.

Abstract:Nature's various hierarchical structures exhibit exceptional performance in enhancing mass transport. However, how to bionic nano-hierarchical structures to enhance ion dynamics and achieve charge regulation is a significant challenge. Herein, a nano-hierarchical porous hybrid membrane inspired by nature was designed by integrating 1D metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) on the 2D MXene substrate utilizing MOF nanoparticles with tailorable positive and negative surface charges. The synergistic effects of the bioinspired nanohierarchical porous structure and surface charge interactions significantly enhance the performance and stability of the nanoconfined membrane, as corroborated by experimental characterizations and theoretical simulations. As a result, the optimized nanohierarchical porous membrane exhibits high a cation selectivity of 0.95, an outstanding power density of 35.04 W m-2, and excellent stability over one month. Synergizing enhanced mass transport and ion dynamics in nano-hierarchically structured materials with tailored charge improves osmotic power generation efficiency and benefits logic circuits with controlled charge transport.

Abstract:A heterogeneous membrane formed by coating a positively charged self‐assembled metal–organic framework monolayer (SAMM) film on a porous anodic aluminum oxide substrate is developed for osmotic energy harvesting. The narrow NH2‐containing window‐cavity channel structures and the rigid backbone of the imidazole moieties in SAMM act as ionic filters and ionic conductors to boost osmotic ion transport with high anion selectivity. Osmotic energy represents a promising energy resource because it is sustainable and environmentally benign. Subnanoscale channels are considered as a competitive platform for generating this blue energy due to their highly selective and ultrafast ion transport. However, fabricating functional subnanochannels capable of high energy output remains challenging. Here, a heterogeneous subnanochannel membrane formed by coating a functionalized self‐assembled metal−organic framework (MOF) monolayer (SAMM) film on a porous anodic aluminum oxide membrane, is reported. The SAMM film, with a thickness of ≈160 nm, is fabricated by self‐assembly of poly(methyl methacrylate‐co‐vinylimidazole)‐modified UiO‐66‐NH2 nanoparticles at the water−air interface. In the SAMM, imidazole and NH2 groups provide abundant positive charges, while the angstrom‐scale windows act as ionic filters for selective screening of anions with different hydration diameters. As a result, the heterogeneous membrane exhibits excellent capacity for anion‐selective transport, which contributes to an optimal osmotic power of 6.76 W m−2 under a 100‐fold NaCl gradient, as well as a high Cl−/SO42− selectivity of ≈42.2. Further, the output power is increased to 10.5 W m−2 by methylating imidazole moieties on the MOF surface. This work provides a facile and modular approach to fabricate subnanochannels for enabling highly selective and efficient osmotic energy conversion.

Abstract:It has long been a challenge to fabricate angstrom-sized functional pores for mimicking the function of biological channels to afford selective transmembrane transport. In this study, we describe a facile strategy to incorporate ionic elements into angstrom-sized channels using de novo encapsulation of charged dye molecules during the interface polymerization of a three-dimensional covalent organic framework (3D COF). We demonstrate that this approach is tailorable as it enables control over both the type and content of the guest and thus allows manipulation of the membrane function. The resulting membranes exhibit excellent permselectivity and low membrane resistance, thereby indicating the potential for harvesting salinity gradient (blue) energy. As a proof-of-concept study, the reverse electrodialysis device coupled with positive and negative dye encapsulated COF membranes afforded a power density of up to 51.4 W m–2 by mixing the simulated seawater and river water, which far exceeds the commercialization benchmark (5 W m–2). Abstract:Nanofluidic membranes have shown great promise in harvesting osmotic energy but its scalablity remains challenging since most studies only tested with a membrane area of ~10-2 mm2 or smaller. We demonstrate that metal-organic-framework membranes with subnanometer pores can be used for scalable osmotic power generation from hypersaline water sources. Our membrane can be scaled up to a few mm2, and the power density can be stabilized at 1.7 W/m2. We reveal that the key is to improve the out-of-membrane conductance while keeping the membrane's charge selectivity, contradicting the previous conception that the ionic conductivity of the membrane plays the dominating role. We highlight that subnanometer pores are essential to ensure the charge selectivity in hypersaline water sources. Our results suggest the importance to engineer the interplay between the in-membrane and out-of-membrane ion transport properties for scalable osmotic power generation.

Electrodeposited MOFs Membrane with In Situ Incorporation of Charged Molecules for Osmotic Energy Harvesting.

Abstract:Ion-selective membranes are considered as the promising candidates for osmotic energy harvesting. However, the fabrication of highly perm-selective membrane is the major challenge. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with well-defined nanochannels along functional charged groups show great importance to tackle this problem. Here, a series of dense sodium polystyrene sulfonate (PSS) incorporated MOFs composite membranes (PSS@MOFs) on a porous anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) membrane via in situ anodic electrodeposition process are developed. Benefiting to the novel structural design of the confined Ag layer, PSS@MOFs dense composite membrane with less defects formed. The sulfonated nanochannels of the PSS@MOFs composite membrane provided rapid and selective transport of cations due to the enhanced electrostatic interaction between the permeating ions and MOFs. While osmotic energy conversion, 860 nm thick negatively charged PSS@MOFs composite membrane achieves an ultrahigh cation transfer number of 0.993 and energy conversion efficiency of 48.8% at a 100-fold salinity gradient. Moreover, a large output power of 2.90 µW has been achieved with an ultra-low internal resistance of 999 Ω, employing an effective area of 12.56 mm . This work presents a promising strategy to construct a high-performance MOFs-based osmotic energy harvesting system for practical applications.
Maximizing Ion Permselectivity in MXene/MOF Nanofluidic Membranes for High‐Efficient Blue Energy Generation

Abstract:Ti3C2Tx MXene/ZIF‐8 hybrid membrane is fabricated by electropolymerization strategy to efficiently harvest osmotic energy. The maximum power density reaches up to 48.05 W m−2 at 500‐fold concentration gradient. The ZIF‐8 layer with angstrom‐scale ion channels endows the membrane with high selectivity (0.906) and further improves the ion permeability (1263.3 A m−2) by reducing the interlayer spacing of MXene layer. Both ion permeability and selectivity of membranes are crucial for nanofluidic behavior. However, it remains a long‐standing challenge for 2D materials to balance these two factors for osmotic energy harvesting. Herein, the MXene/metal–organic framework (MOF) hybrid membranes are reported to realize efficient ion‐permselective nanofluidic system, leading to high‐performance osmotic power generator. In the system, zeolitic imidazolate framework‐8 (ZIF‐8) is deposited onto the MXene surface and intercalated between the MXene nanosheets by electropolymerization approach. The angstrom‐sized windows of ZIF‐8 layer act as ion selectivity filters, endowing the membrane with high cation selectivity by size effect. The intercalation of ZIF‐8 crystals, reduces the interspacing of MXene, therefore, not only enhancing the ion permeability by shortening the ion transport pathway through the membrane, but also further improving the selectivity by increasing the overlap effect of electric‐double layer. The maximum power density reaches up to 48.05 W m−2 under 500‐fold salinity gradient with a high permeability (1263.3 A m−2), and a high selectivity of 0.906 at 50‐fold is obtained. This study provides a facile method to fabricate nanofluidic 2D membranes with both high ion permeability and selectivity for water nexus energy conversion.

Abstract:The unique ion-transport properties in nanoconfined pores enable nanofluidic devices with great potential in harvesting osmotic energy. The energy conversion performance could be significantly improved by the precise regulation of the "permeability-selectivity" trade-off and the ion concentration polarization effect. Here, we take the advantage of electrodeposition technique to fabricate a Janus metal-organic framework (J-MOF) membrane that possesses rapid ion-transport capability and impeccable ion selectivity. The asymmetric structure and asymmetric surface charge distribution of the J-MOF device can suppress the ion concentration polarization effect and enhance the ion charge separation, exhibiting an improved energy harvesting performance. An output power density of 3.44 W/m2 has been achieved with the J-MOF membrane at a 1000-fold concentration gradient. This work provides a new strategy for fabricating high-performance energy-harvesting devices.

Abstract:Salinity-gradient directed osmotic energy between seawater and river water has been widely considered as a promising clean and renewable energy source, as there are numerous river estuaries on our planet. In the past few decades, reverse electrodialysis (RED) technique based on cation-selective membranes has been used as the key strategy to convert osmotic energy into electricity. From this aspect, developing high-efficiency anion-selective membranes will also have great potential for capturing osmotic energy, however, remains systematically unexplored. In nature, electric eels can produce electricity from ionic gradients by using their “sub-nanoscale” protein ion channels to transport ions selectively. Inspired by this, here we developed a UiO-66-NH 2 metal-organic framework (MOF) based anion-selective composite membrane with sub-nanochannels, and achieved high-performance salinity-gradient power generation by mixing artificial seawater (0.5 M NaCl) and river water (0.01 M NaCl). The UiO-66-NH 2 metal-organic framework based composite membranes can be easily and economically fabricated with dense structure and long-term working stability in saline, and its performance of power generation can also be adjusted by pH to enhance the surface charge density of the MOF sub-nanochannels. This study will inspire the exploitation of MOFs for investigating the sub-nanochannel directed high-performance salinity-gradient energy harvesting systems based on anion-selective ion transport.

Through our approach, the effective pore size can be reduced through the immobilization of metal salt residues in the cavities, and appropriate MOF crystal facets can be exposed, to achieve competitive molecular sieving capabilities. The method can also be used more generally for the synthesis of a variety of MOF membranes and particles. Importantly, we design and synthesize promising MOF membranes candidates that are hard to achieve through conventional methods. For example, our CuBTC/MIL-100 membrane exhibits 89, 171, 241 and 336 times higher H2 permeance than that of CO2, O2, N2 and CH4, respectively.

Abstract:Selective ion transport in nanoporous membranes has become a research hot spot in the fields of both nanofluidics and membrane separation because of its wide potential applications, such as ion separation, energy harvesting and conversion, and ion sensing. Developing nanofluidic devices or membranes with nanoconfined to subnanoconfined space is the core part of nanofluidic studies because the materials used to construct nanofluidic devices determine the exploration potential of the ion-transport performance. In addition, tuning the macroscopic structure of devices, such as asymmetric or heterogeneous structures, in terms of both aperture size and charge density can impart multiple nanofluidic functions. Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are a promising class of crystalline porous materials with desirable structures for constructing controllable microscopic nanofluidic devices as an alternative to other materials, such as Si/SiNx, polymers, and two dimensional (2D) layered materials. (i) MOFs have high porosity with aperture sizes ranging from the angstrom to nanometer scale and can provide abundant pathways for ion transport. (ii) Water-stable MOFs can maintain channel stability without severe swelling issues. (iii) The huge diversity of MOFs in terms of aperture size, channel dimension, and chemical environment allows for the systematic investigation of one individual effect on selective ion transport by excluding other influencing factors to a great extent. (iv) Most MOFs have well-ordered molecular structures with the arrangement of each atom being known. This favors the high reliability of theoretical modeling to simulate nanofluidic transport and then unveil mechanisms for selective ion transport. In this Account, we discuss recent progress in the selective ion transport of MOF-based subnanochannel (MOFSNC) membranes by the rational design and fabrication of high-quality SNC membranes, mainly based on our group’s work. First, we refer to ion–ion selectivity as anion–anion or cation–cation selectivity and cation–anion or anion–cation selectivity while excluding the water molecule-ion selectivity in desalination and water purification. Second, we highlight the advantages of MOF structures as SNC platforms for the investigation of subnanometer confined ion transport. Third, we discuss the rational design of MOFSNCs for ultimate ion selectivity by molecular engineering and membrane structural engineering of MOFSNCs with the biomimetic strategy. Finally, we conclude this Account with a perspective on the future opportunities and major challenges in MOFSNC membranes, such as their practical applications in ion separation and nanofluidics.
Light-Enhanced Osmotic Energy Harvester Using Photoactive Porphyrin Metal-Organic Framework Membranes

Abstract:High ion selectivity and permeability, as two contradictory aspects for the membrane design, highly hamper the development of osmotic energy harvesting technologies. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with ultra-small and high-density pores and functional surface groups show great promise in tackling these problems. Here, we propose a facile and mild cathodic deposition method to directly prepare crack-free porphyrin MOF membranes on a porous anodic aluminum oxide for osmotic energy harvesting. The abundant carboxyl groups of the functionalized porphyrin ligands together with the nanoporous structure endows the MOF membrane with high cation selectivity and ion permeability, thus a large output power density of 6.26 W m(-2) is achieved. The photoactive porphyrin ligands further lead to an improvement of the power density to 7.74 W m(-2) upon light irradiation. This work provides a promising strategy for the design of high-performance osmotic energy harvesting systems.

Due to the enhanced ion selectivity and ionic diode effect, the membrane can achieve an exceptional osmotic power of 50.5 W m−2 from LiCl‐methanol solutions.
