Abstract:The surface Houghton groups $\mathcal{H}_{n}$ are a family of groups generalizing Houghton groups $H_n$, which are constructed as asymptotically rigid mapping class groups. We give a complete computation of the BNSR-invariants $\Sigma^{m}(P\mathcal{H}_{n})$ of their intersection with the pure mapping class group. To do so, we prove that the associated Stein--Farley cube complex is CAT(0), and we adapt Zaremsky's method for computing the BNSR-invariants of the Houghton groups. As a consequence, we give a criterion for when subgroups of $H_n$ and $P\mathcal{H}_{n}$ having the same finiteness length as their parent group are finite index. We also discuss the failure of some of these groups to be co-Hopfian.

Hameomorphism Groups of Positive Genus Surfaces

Abstract:In their previous works <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2105.11026" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2105.11026">arXiv:2105.11026</a>, <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2206.10749" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2206.10749">arXiv:2206.10749</a>, Cristofaro-Gardiner, Humilière, Mak, Seyfaddini and Smith defined links spectral invariants on connected compact surfaces and used them to show various results on the algebraic structure of the group of area-preserving homeomorphisms of surfaces, particularly in cases where the surfaces have genus zero. We show that on surfaces with higher genus, for a certain class of links, the invariants will satisfy a local quasimorphism property. Subsequently, we generalize their results to surfaces of any genus. This extension includes the non-simplicity of (i) the group of hameomorphisms of a closed surface, and (ii) the kernel of the Calabi homomorphism inside the group of hameomorphisms of a surface with non-empty boundary. Moreover, we prove that the Calabi homomorphism extends (non-canonically) to the $C^0$-closure of the set of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms of any surface. The local quasimorphism property is a consequence of a quantitative Künneth formula for a connected sum in Heegaard Floer homology, inspired by results of Ozsváth and Szabó.

Abstract:Let M be a surface (possibly nonorientable) with punctures and/or boundary components. The paper is a study of ``geometric subgroups'' of the mapping class group of M, that is subgroups corresponding to inclusions of subsurfaces (possibly disconnected). We characterise the subsurfaces which lead to virtually abelian geometric subgroups. We provide algebraic and geometric conditions under which two geometric subgroups are commensurable. We also describe the commensurator of a geometric subgroup in terms of the stabiliser of the underlying subsurface. Finally, we show some applications of our analysis to the theory of irreducible unitary representations of mapping class groups.

Abstract:We provide sufficient conditions for two subgroups of a hierarchically hyperbolic group to generate an amalgamated free product over their intersection. The result applies in particular to certain geometric subgroups of mapping class groups of finite-type surfaces, that is, those subgroups coming from the embeddings of closed subsurfaces. In the second half of the paper, we study under which hypotheses our amalgamation procedure preserves several notions of convexity in HHS, such as hierarchical quasiconvexity (as introduced by Behrstock, Hagen, and Sisto) and strong quasiconvexity (every quasigeodesic with endpoints on the subset lies in a uniform neighbourhood). This answers a question of Russell, Spriano, and Tran.

Insight in the Rumin Cohomology and Orientability Properties of the Heisenberg Group

Abstract:The purpose of this study is to analyse two related topics: the Rumin cohomology and the $\mathbb{H}$-orientability in the Heisenberg group $\mathbb{H}^n$. In the first three chapters we carefully describe the Rumin cohomology with particular emphasis at the second order differential operator $D$, giving examples in the cases $n=1$ and $n=2$. We also show the commutation between all Rumin differential operators and the pullback by a contact map and, more generally, describe pushforward and pullback explicitly in different situations. Differential forms can be used to define the notion of orientability; indeed in the fourth chapter we define the $\mathbb{H}$-orientability for $\mathbb{H}$-regular surfaces and we prove that $\mathbb{H}$-orientability implies standard orientability, while the opposite is not always true. Finally we show that, up to one point, a M\"obius strip in $\mathbb{H}^1$ is a $\mathbb{H}$-regular surface and we use this fact to prove that there exist $\mathbb{H}$-regular non-$\mathbb{H}$-orientable surfaces, at least in the case $n=1$. This opens the possibility for an analysis of Heisenberg currents mod $2$.

Abstract:Let $S$ be a closed oriented surface and $G$ a finite group of orientation preserving automorphisms of $S$ whose orbit space has genus at least $2$. There is a natural group homomorphism from the $G$-centralizer in $Diff^+(S)$ to the $G$-centralizer in $Sp(H_1(S))$. We give a sufficient condition for its image to be a subgroup of finite index and a weaker condition for this to have no finite nonzero orbit (the Putman-Wieland property).

Abstract:We develop a framework for common commensurators of discrete subgroups of lattices in isometry groups of CAT(0) spaces. We show that the Greenberg-Shalom hypothesis about discreteness of common commensurators of Zariski dense subgroups and lattices fails in this generality, even if one imposes strong finiteness conditions. We analyze some examples due to Burger and Mozes in this context and show that they have discrete common commensurator.

Abstract:Given a finite group $G$ acting on a surface $S$, the centralizer of G in the mapping class group $\textrm{Mod}(S)$ has a natural representation given by its action on the homology $H_1(S; \mathbb{Q})$. We consider the question of whether this representation has arithmetic image. Several authors have given positive and negative answers to this question. We give a complete answer when S has genus at most 3.

Abstract:We explicitly construct new subgroups of the mapping class groups of an uncountable collection of infinite-type surfaces, including, but not limited to, right-angled Artin groups, free groups, Baumslag-Solitar groups, mapping class groups of other surfaces, and a large collection of wreath products. For each such subgroup $H$ and surface $S$, we show that there are countably many non-conjugate embeddings of $H$ into $\text{Map}(S)$; in certain cases, there are uncountably many such embeddings. The images of each of these embeddings cannot lie in the isometry group of $S$ for any hyperbolic metric and are not contained in the closure of the compactly supported subgroup of $\text{Map}(S)$. In this sense, our construction is new and does not rely on previously known techniques for constructing subgroups of mapping class groups. Notably, our embeddings of $\text{Map}(S')$ into $\text{Map}(S)$ are not induced by embeddings of $S'$ into $S$. Our main tool for all of these constructions is the utilization of special homeomorphisms of $S$ called shift maps, and more generally, multipush maps.

Diamonds: Homology and the Central Series of Groups

Abstract:We establish an analog of a theorem of Stallings which asserts the homomorphisms between the universal nilpotent quotients induced by a homomorphism $G \to H$ of groups are isomorphisms provided a pair of homological conditions are satisfied. Our analogy does not have a homomorphism between $G$ and $H$ but instead we have a diamond of groups containing $G,H$ that satisfies a similar homological condition. We derive a few applications of this result. First, we show that there exist non-isomorphic number fields whose absolute Galois groups have isomorphic universal nilpotent quotients. We show that there exists pairs of non-isometric hyperbolic $n$-manifolds whose fundamental groups are residually nilpotent and have isomorphic universal nilpotent quotients. These are the first examples of residually nilpotent Kleinian groups with arbitrarily large nilpotent genus. Complex hyperbolic 2-manifold examples are given which also supply examples of surfaces whose geometric fundamental groups have the isomorphic universal nilpotent quotients and the isomorphisms are compatible with the outer Galois actions. The case of Riemann surfaces provides examples of curves where the same implication holds. In fact, for every $g \geq 2$, we show all but finitely many curves in $\mathcal{M}_g$ have finite covers where this happens.

Abstract:We define a new family of spectral invariants associated to certain Lagrangian links in compact and connected surfaces of any genus. We show that our invariants recover the Calabi invariant of Hamiltonians in their limit. As applications, we resolve several open questions from topological surface dynamics and continuous symplectic topology: we show that the group of Hamiltonian homeomorphisms of any compact surface with (possibly empty) boundary is not simple; we extend the Calabi homomorphism to the group of Hameomorphisms constructed by Oh-Müller; and, we construct an infinite dimensional family of quasimorphisms on the group of area and orientation preserving homeomorphisms of the two-sphere. Our invariants are inspired by recent work of Polterovich and Shelukhin defining and applying spectral invariants for certain classes of links in the two-sphere.

Abstract:We extend the Dikranjan-Uspenskij notions of c-compact and h-complete topological group to the morphism level, study the stability properties of the newly defined types of maps, such as closure under direct products, and compare them with their counterparts in topology. We assume Hausdorffness only when our proofs require us to do so, which leads to new results and the affirmation of some facts that were known in a Hausdorff context.
Automatic continuity of pure mapping class groups

Abstract:We completely classify the orientable infinite-type surfaces $S$ such that $\operatorname{PMap}(S)$, the pure mapping class group, has automatic continuity. This classification includes surfaces with noncompact boundary. In the case of surfaces with finitely many ends and no noncompact boundary components, we prove the mapping class group $\operatorname{Map}(S)$ does not have automatic continuity. We also completely classify the surfaces such that $\overline{\operatorname{PMap}_c(S)}$, the subgroup of the pure mapping class group composed of elements with representatives that can be approximated by compactly supported homeomorphisms, has automatic continuity. In some cases when $\overline{\operatorname{PMap}_c(S)}$ has automatic continuity, we show any homomorphism from $\overline{\operatorname{PMap}_c(S)}$ to a countable group is trivial.

Abstract:Let $\varphi:F_1\to F_2$ be an injective morphism of free groups. If $\varphi$ is geometric (i.e. induced by an inclusion of oriented compact connected surfaces with nonempty boundary), then we show that $\varphi$ is an isometric embedding for stable commutator length. More generally, we show that if $T$ is a subsurface of an oriented compact (possibly closed) connected surface $S$, and $c$ is an integral $1$-chain on $\pi_1T$, then there is an isometric embedding $H_2(T,c)\to H_2(S,c)$ for the relative Gromov seminorm. Those statements are proved by finding an appropriate standard form for admissible surfaces and showing that, under the right homology vanishing conditions, such an admissible surface in $S$ for a chain in $T$ is in fact an admissible surface in $T$.

Abstract:We prove the congruence subgroup property for the centralizer of a finite subgroup $G$ in the mapping class group of a hyperbolic oriented and connected surface of finite topological type $S$ such that the genus of the quotient surface $S/G$ is at most $2$. As an application, we show that torsion elements in the mapping class group of a surface of genus $\leq 2$ are conjugacy distinguished.

Abstract:Putman and Wieland conjectured that if Σ∼→Σ is a finite branched cover between closed oriented surfaces of sufficiently high genus, then the orbits of all nonzero elements of H1(Σ∼;Q) under the action of lifts to Σ∼ of mapping classes on Σ are infinite. We prove that this holds if H1(Σ∼;Q) is generated by the homology classes of lifts of simple closed curves on Σ . We also prove that the subspace of H1(Σ∼;Q) spanned by such lifts is a symplectic subspace. Finally, simple closed curves lie on subsurfaces homeomorphic to 2‐holed spheres, and we prove that H1(Σ∼;Q) is generated by the homology classes of lifts of loops on Σ lying on subsurfaces homeomorphic to 3‐holed spheres.

Abstract:Abstract The non-hyperelliptic connected components of the strata of translation surfaces are conjectured to be orbifold classifying spaces for some groups commensurable to some mapping class groups. The topological monodromy map of the non-hyperelliptic components projects naturally to the mapping class group of the underlying punctured surface and is an obvious candidate to test commensurability. In the present article, we prove that for the components $\mathcal {H}(3,1)$ and $\mathcal {H}^{nh}(4)$ in genus 3 the monodromy map fails to demonstrate the conjectured commensurability. In particular, building on the work of Wajnryb, we prove that the kernels of the monodromy maps for $\mathcal {H}(3,1)$ and $\mathcal {H}^{nh}(4)$ are large, as they contain a non-abelian free group of rank $2$.
