Abstract:We study the property of matter in equilibrium with a static, spherically symmetric black hole in D-dimensional spacetime. It requires this kind of ma tter has an equation of state ω ≡ pr/ρ = −1/(1 + 2kn), k, n ∈ N, which seems to be independent of D. However, when we associate this with specific models, some interesting lim its on space could be found: (i)D = 2+ 2kn while the black hole is surrounded by cosmic strings; (ii)th e black hole can be surrounded by linear dilaton field only in 4-dimensional s pacetime. In both cases, D =4 is special.

Abstract:Recently our understanding of black holes in D-spacetime dimensions, as solutions of the Einstein equation, has advanced greatly. Besides the well established spherical black hole we have now explicitly found other species of topologies of the event horizons. Whether in asymptotically flat, AntideSitter or deSitter spaces, the different species are really non-unique when D > 4. An example of this are the black rings. Another issue in higher dimensions that is not fully understood is the struggle for existence of regular black hole solutions. However, we managed to observe a selection rule for regular solutions of thin black rings: they have to be balanced i.e. in vacuum, a neutral asymptotically flat black ring incorporates a balance between the centrifugal repulsion and the tension. The equilibrium condition seems to be equivalent to the condition to guarantee regularity on the geometry of the black ring solution. We will review the tree of species of black holes and present new results on exotic black holes with charges.

Abstract:I review elements of the foundations of black-hole theory with attention to problematic issues, and describe some techniques which either seem to help with the difficulties or at least investigate their scope. The definition of black holes via event horizons has been problematic because it depends on knowing the global structure of space-time; often attempts to avoid this (e.g. apparent horizons) require knowledge of the interior geometry. I suggest studying instead the holonomy relating the exterior neighborhood of the incipient horizon to the regime of distant observers; at least in the spherically symmetric case, this holonomy will develop certain universal features, in principle observable from signals emitted from infalling objects. I discuss the theory of quantum fields in curved space-time, and the difficulties with Hawking's prediction of black-hole radiation. I then show that the usual, very natural, theory of quantum fields in curved space-time runs into difficulties when applied to measurement problems, interactions, zero-point effects and stress-energies. I suggest that we take seriously the possibility that this theory, for all its naturalness, may not be quite right.

Abstract:We review here some of the major open issues and challenges in black hole physics today, and the current progress on the same. It is pointed out that to secure a concrete foundation for the basic theory as well as astrophysical applications for black hole physics, it is essential to gain a suitable insight into these questions. In particular, we discuss the recent results investigating the final fate of a massive star within the framework of the Einstein gravity, and the stability and genericity aspects of the gravitational collapse outcomes in terms of black holes and naked singularities. Recent developments such as spinning up a black hole by throwing matter into it, and physical effects near naked singularities are considered. It is pointed out that some of the new results obtained in recent years in the theory of gravitational collapse imply interesting possibilities and understanding for the theoretical advances in gravity as well as towards new astrophysical applications.

Abstract:A critical overview of the concepts that govern the principles of the Eternally Collapsing Object (ECO) is entailed in this article. The mathematical analysis will be dealt to conclude the proof required for the ECO paradigm is ad-hoc in nature at best. The first section details in rejecting black holes always considers the possibility of formation of trapped surfaces, so we will begin our work by looking into "non occurrence of trapped surfaces" then we analyze Dr. Mitra's indirect claim regarding how $ R = 0$ (inside black hole) could also be treated as another coordinate singularity. After this a detailed analysis on the claim that the mass of the Schwarzschild black hole being zero is in actuality a valid claim or not. The main aim of this article is address the core issue of whether black holes indeed do exist or is it a consequence of biases that circumvent common sense over the years. This article aims to bridge the gap between ECOs and black holes and if at all black holes do exist, which was vehemently denied by the person whose paper I am reviewing. The analysis presented here will show us, why ECOs are baseless and can not really be the solution to black hole problem.

Abstract:Black holes, initially thought of as very interesting mathematical and geometric solutions of general relativity, over time, have come up with surprises and challenges for modern physics. In modern times, they have started to test our confidence in the fundamental understanding of nature. The most serious charge on the black holes is that they eat up information, never to release and subsequently erase it. This goes absolutely against the sacred principles of all other branches of fundamental sciences. This realization has shaken the very base of foundational concepts, both in quantum theory and gravity, which we always took for granted. Attempts to get rid of of this charge, have led us to crossroads with concepts, hold dearly in quantum theory. The sphere of black hole’s tussle with quantum theory has readily and steadily grown, from the advent of the Hawking radiation some four decades back, into domain of quantum information theory in modern times, most aptly, recently put in the form of the firewall puzzle. Do black holes really indicate something sinister about their existence or do they really point towards the troubles of ignoring the fundamental issues, our modern theories are seemingly plagued with? In this review, we focus on issues pertaining to black hole evaporation, the development of the information loss paradox, its recent formulation, the leading debates and promising directions in the community.

Abstract:Models postulating the existence of additional spacelike dimensions of macroscopic or even infinite size, while viewing our observable universe as merely a 3-brane living in a higher-dimensional bulk were a major breakthrough when proposed some 15 years ago. The most interesting among them both in terms of elegance of the setup and of the richness of the emerging phenomenology is the Randall-Sundrum II model where one infinite extra spacelike dimension is considered with an AdS topology, characterized by the warping effect caused by the presence of a negative cosmological constant in the bulk. A major drawback of this model is that despite numerous efforts no line element has ever been found that could describe a stable, regular, realistic black hole. Finding a smoothly behaved such solution supported by the presence of some more or less conventional fields either in the bulk and/or on the brane is the core of the black hole challenge. After a comprehensive presentation of the details of the model and the analysis of the significance and the utility of getting a specific analytic black hole solution, several (unsuccessful) analytic and numerical approaches to the problem developed over the years are presented with some discussion about their results. The chapter closes with the latest numerical results that actually consists a major advancement in the effort to address the challenge, the presentation of the most recent analytic work trying (and unfortunately failing) to build a solution assuming the existence of unconventional scalar fields and some ideas about the routes the forthcoming analytic approaches should explore.
Black Holes in Multi-Metric Gravity II: Hairy Solutions and Linear Stability of the Non- and Partially Proportional Branches

Abstract:Owing to our work in part I of this series of papers, it is understood that the analytically known black hole solutions in the theory of ghost free multi-metric gravity can be split into three distinct classes, and that one of these classes - the proportional branch - exhibits the Gregory-Laflamme instability at linear level in the metric perturbations, whenever the black hole horizon size is smaller than (roughly) the Compton wavelength of the theory's lightest massive graviton. In this first of two sequels, we determine the linear stability of the two remaining classes of black hole solutions - the non-proportional and partially proportional branches - and discuss how our results likely differ at nonlinear level. We also give a general prescription to construct multi-metric solutions describing black holes endowed with massive graviton hair, which may constitute the end state of the instability in the proportional branch. We utilise a tractable example model involving 3 metrics to see how this works in practice, and determine the asymptotic form of its corresponding hairy solutions at infinity, where one can clearly see the individual contributions from each of the graviton mass modes.

Abstract:The ratios $\sqrt{8/9}=2\sqrt{2}/3\approx 0.9428$ and $\sqrt{3}/2 \approx 0.866$ appear in various contexts of black hole physics, as values of the charge-to-mass ratio $Q/M$ or the rotation parameter $a/M$ for Reissner-Nordström and Kerr black holes, respectively. In this work, in the Reissner-Nordström case, I relate these ratios with the quantization of the horizon area, or equivalently of the entropy. Furthermore, these ratios are related to a century-old work of Kasner, in which he conjectured that certain sequences arising from complex analysis may have a quantum interpretation. These numbers also appear in the case of Kerr black holes, but the explanation is not as straightforward. The Kasner ratio may also be relevant for understanding the random matrix and random graph approaches to black hole physics, such as fast scrambling of quantum information, via a bound related to Ramanujan graph. Intriguingly, some other pure mathematical problems in complex analysis, notably complex interpolation in the unit disk, appear to share some mathematical expressions with the black hole problem and thus also involve the Kasner ratio.

Abstract:Black holes play a pivotal role in the foundations of physics, but there is an alarming discrepancy between what is considered to be a black hole in observational astronomy and theoretical studies. Despite claims to the contrary, we argue that identifying the observed astrophysical black hole candidates as genuine black holes is not justified based on the currently available observational data, and elaborate on the necessary evidence required to support such a remarkable claim. In addition, we investigate whether the predictions of semiclassical gravity are equally compatible with competing theoretical models, and find that semiclassical arguments favor horizonless configurations.

These solutions can be interpreted as maximally entangled states of two black holes that form a complex EPR pair. We suggest that similar bridges might be present for more general entangled states. In the case of entangled black holes one can formulate versions of the AMPS(S) paradoxes and resolve them. This suggests possible resolutions of the firewall paradoxes for more general situations. Black Hole Horizons and their Mechanics

Abstract:Black holes are often characterized by event horizons, following the literature that laid the mathematical foundations of the subject in the 1970s. However black hole event horizons have two fundamental conceptual limitations. First, they are defined only in space-times that admit a future conformal boundary. Second, they are teleological; their formation and growth is not determined by local physics but depends on what could happen in the distant future. Therefore, event horizons have not played much of a role in the recent theoretical advances that were sparked by discoveries of the LIGO-virgo collaborations. This article focuses on quasi-local horizons that have been used instead. Laws governing them -- mechanics of quasi-local horizons -- generalize those that were first found using event horizons. These results, obtained over the last two decades or so, have provided much insight into dynamical predictions of general relativity in the fully nonlinear regime. The article summarizes the deep and multi-faceted interplay between geometry and physics that has emerged. Conceptually, quasi-local horizons also play a key role in the discussion of the quantum evaporation of black holes. However, due to space limitations, this application is only briefly discussed in Section 6.

Abstract:Quantum error correction has given us a natural language for the emergence of spacetime, but the black hole interior poses a challenge for this framework: at late times the apparent number of interior degrees of freedom in effective field theory can vastly exceed the true number of fundamental degrees of freedom, so there can be no isometric (i.e. inner-product preserving) encoding of the former into the latter. In this paper we explain how quantum error correction nonetheless can be used to explain the emergence of the black hole interior, via the idea of "non-isometric codes protected by computational complexity". We show that many previous ideas, such as the existence of a large number of "null states", a breakdown of effective field theory for operations of exponential complexity, the quantum extremal surface calculation of the Page curve, post-selection, "state-dependent/state-specific" operator reconstruction, and the "simple entropy" approach to complexity coarse-graining, all fit naturally into this framework, and we illustrate all of these phenomena simultaneously in a soluble model.

Abstract:In the early days of Black Hole Thermodynamics, Bekenstein calculated the mass dispersion of a macroscopic black hole that results from the stochasticity of the thermal radiation it emits -- it turned out to be negative for black holes massive than $M \stackrel{>}{\sim} 10^{30}g$. He named it the {\it "mass width paradox"}. Here we revisit his early calculation, in an axiomatic approach with a set of more economical assumptions and reach similar conclusions. We argue that the mass paradox results from considering a black hole as a classical system, without an inner quantum structure. As a matter of fact, when we take into account the discreteness of the area levels and assume identical probability transition between contiguous quantum states \cite{bekenstein}, the paradox disappears. In the process we obtain the probability of finding a black-hole in some area eigenstate for a given averaged area. As a by-product, the quantum scenario also points towards a possible solution of the black hole information conundrum.

Abstract:This letter provides evidence of complexity-volume and complexity-action conjectures by examining the structure of a black hole, which comprises a horizon linked to the singularity through a wormhole. In this situation, the shape of the black hole's geometry resembles that of Gabriel's horn. In essence, our results indicate that the information paradox is merely the painter's paradox.

Abstract:The black hole information paradox and the black hole entropy are currently extensively researched. The consensus about the solution of the information paradox is not yet reached, and it is not yet clear what can we learn about quantum gravity from these and the related research. It seems that the apparently irreducible paradoxes force us to give up on at least one well-established principle or another. Since we are talking about a choice between the principle of equivalence from general relativity and some essential principles from quantum theory, both being the most reliable theories we have, it is recommended to proceed with caution and search more conservative solutions. These paradoxes are revisited here, as well as the black hole complementarity and the firewall proposals, with an emphasis on the less obvious assumptions. Some arguments from the literature are reviewed, and new counterarguments are presented. Some less considered less radical possibilities are discussed, and a conservative solution, which is more consistent with both the principle of equivalence from general relativity and the unitarity from quantum theory, is discussed.
