Abstract:In 1993, just about a century after the epoch of Classical Invariant Theory and almost 30 years after Mumford's seminal book on Geometric Invariant Theory, Bernd Sturmfels approached the subject from a new, algorithmic perspective in his book on Algorithms in Invariant Theory. This article aims to highlight some of the developments that followed the book. Inspired by Bernd's style of teaching mathematics, the goal is neither comprehensiveness nor maximal generality, but to emphasize the main ideas and to convey the beauty of the subject. The article is intended as an invitation to invariant theory, and in particular to Bernd's work and the ideas inspired by it.

The motivations and applications of this work stem from problems in differential geometry and relativistic field theory. The key feature in our theory is that we allow for non-transverse symmetry group actions, which are very common in applications.

Abstract:In connection with the 150th anniversary of F. Klein’s Erlangen program in geometry and the 100th anniversary of the birth of C. Yang, the main creator, non-Abelian gauge fields are discovered, the far and near sources of the standard in the physics of fundamental models of interactions are concluded. A distant source is the Erlangen program and its subsequent introduction of reaction to relative and classical physics. This material discusses the phenomenon of “inconceivable effectiveness of mathematics in special sciences” (J. Wigner), which becomes clearer on the basis of the “relay model” of the interaction between mathematics and physics proposed by D. Hilbert. The approximation of the Erlangen observation, which is applied to Noether's observations on the connection between meetings and meetings, is considered, as well as the application of the Erlangen observation to the history of physics. It is shown how the extension of this domain to local gauge domains is carried out by C. Yang and R. Millsakoch theories of non-Abelian field gauges (1954), which became a near source on the way to the standard and completed model in 1973-1974.

Abstract:In this letter we outline some reasons for considering a quantum field theory symmetric under quantum groups and we sketch some results obtained with collaborators in the k-Poincare framework. We deal with this latter as a toy model towards an effective and low-energy theory of quantum gravity, the new physically relevant effects of which are Planck-scale suppressed.

Abstract: We study free scalar field theory on a graph, which gives rise to a modified version of discrete Green's function on a graph studied in \cite{CY}. We show that this gives rise to a graph invariant, which is closely related to the 2-dim Weisfeiler-Lehman algorithm for graph isomorphism testing. We complement this invariant by another type of graph invariants, coming from viewing graphs as quadratic forms over the integers. We explain that the combination of these two ideas give rise to an interesting approach to the graph isomorphism problem.

Abstract:Non-relativistic quantum field theory is a framework that describes systems where the velocities are much smaller than the speed of light. A large class of those obey Schrödinger invariance, which is the equivalent of the conformal symmetry in the relativistic world. In this review, we pedagogically introduce the main theoretical tools used to study non-relativistic physics: null reduction and limits, where c is the speed of light. We present a historical overview of non-relativistic wave equations, Jackiw–Pi vortices, the Aharonov–Bohm scattering, and the trace anomaly for a Schrödinger scalar. We then review modern developments, including fermions at unitarity, the quantum Hall effect, off-shell actions, and a systematic classification of the trace anomaly. The last part of this review is dedicated to current research topics. We define non-relativistic supersymmetry and a corresponding superspace to covariantly deal with quantum corrections. Finally, we define the Spin Matrix Theory limit of the AdS/CFT correspondence, which is a non-relativistic sector of the duality obtained via a decoupling limit, where a precise matching of the two sides can be achieved.

Abstract:Recent experimental results on slow light heighten interest in nonlinear Maxwell theories. We obtain Galilei covariant equations for electromagnetism by allowing special nonlinearities in the constitutive equations only, keeping Maxwell's equations unchanged. Combining these with linear or nonlinear Schroedinger equations, e.g. as proposed by Doebner and Goldin, yields a Galilean quantum electrodynamics.

Abstract:Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen's paper in 1935 is discussed in parallel with an EPR experiment on $K^0\bar{K}^0$ system in 1998, yielding a strong hint of distinction in both wave-function and operators between particle and antiparticle at the level of quantum mechanics (QM). Then it is proposed that the CPT invariance in particle physics leads naturally to a basic postulate that the (newly defined) space-time inversion (${\bf x}\to -{\bf x},t\to -t$) is equivalent to the transformation between particle and its antiparticle. The evolution of this postulate from nonrelativistic QM via relativistic QM till the quantum field theory is discussed in some detail. The Klein paradox for both Klein-Gordon equation and Dirac equation is also discussed. Keywords: CPT invariance, Antiparticle, Quantum mechanics, Quantum field theory

Abstract:We review the relationship between discrete groups of symmetries of Euclidean three-space, constructions in algebraic geometry around Kleinian singularities including versions of Hilbert and Quot schemes, and their relationship to finite-dimensional and affine Lie algebras via the McKay correspondence. We focus on combinatorial aspects, such as the enumeration of certain types of partition-like objects, reviewing in particular a recently developed root-of-unity-substitution calculus. While the most complete results are in type A, we also develop aspects of the theory in type D, and end with some questions about the exceptional type E cases.

Abstract:A basic principle of physics is the freedom to locally choose any unit system when describing physical quantities. Its implementation amounts to treating Weyl invariance as a fundamental symmetry of all physical theories. In this thesis, we study the consequences of this "unit invariance" principle and find that it is a unifying one. Unit invariance is achieved by introducing a gauge field called the scale, designed to measure how unit systems vary from point to point. In fact, by a uniform and simple Weyl invariant coupling of scale and matter fields, we unify massless, massive, and partially massless excitations. As a consequence, masses now dictate the response of physical quantities to changes of scale. This response is calibrated by certain "tractor Weyl weights". Reality of these weights yield Breitenlohner-Freedman stability bounds in anti de Sitter spaces. Another valuable outcome of our approach is a general mechanism for constructing conformally invariant theories. In particular, we provide direct derivations of the novel Weyl invariant Deser--Nepomechie vector and spin three-half theories as well as new higher spin generalizations thereof. To construct these theories, a "tractor calculus" coming from conformal geometry is employed, which keeps manifest Weyl invariance at all stages. In fact, our approach replaces the usual Riemannian geometry description of physics with a conformal geometry one. Within the same framework, we also give a description of fermionic and interacting supersymmetric theories which again unifies massless and massive excitations.

Abstract:We review in simple terms the covariant approaches to the canonical formulation of classical relativistic field theories (in particular gauge field theories and general relativity) and we discuss the relationships between these approaches as well as the relation with the standard (non-covariant) Hamiltonian formulation. Particular attention is paid to conservation laws (notably related to geometric symmetries) within the different approaches. Moreover, for each of these approaches, the impact of space-time boundaries is also addressed. To make the text accessible to a wider audience, we have included an outline of Poisson and symplectic geometry for both classical mechanics and field theory.

Abstract:Reviews in Mathematical Physics, Ahead of Print. The Langlands program is a vast mathematical projection linking number theory and geometry. In high-energy physics, a connection with mirror symmetry has been suggested in string theory, but it has been little studied in low-energy physics. In the framework of the Langlands program, we present a unified description of the integer and fractional quantum Hall effect and the duality found in the fractal nature of the energy spectrum of two-dimensional Bloch electrons, statistical physics, and quantum computation. The new unified view of existing dualism presented in this paper raises the entirely new question of how each theory of physics is connected as a piece of the Langlands program.

Exactly Solvable and Integrable Systems

Abstract:Some years ago Ruijsenaars and Schneider initiated the study of mechanical systems exhibiting an action of the Poincare algebra. The systems they discovered were far richer: their models were actually integrable and possessed a natural quantum version. We follow this early work finding and classifying mechanical systems with such an action. New solutions are found together with a new class of models exhibiting an action of the Galilean algebra. These are related to the functional identities underlying the various Hirzebruch genera. The quantum mechanics is also discussed.

Abstract:We study the classical and quantum "properties" of Galilean fermions in 3+1 dimensions. We have taken the case of massless Galilean fermions minimally coupled to the scalar field. At the classical level, the Lagrangian is obtained by null reducing the relativistic theory in one higher dimension. The resulting theory is found to be invariant under infinite Galilean conformal symmetries. Using Noether's procedure, we construct the corresponding infinite conserved charges. Path integral techniques are then employed to probe the quantum "properties" of the theory. The theory is found to be renormalizable. A novel feature of the theory is the emergence of mass scale at the first order of quantum correction. The conformal symmetry of the theory breaks at the quantum level. We confirm this by constructing the beta function of the theory.
