Abstract:There is a growing concern that the mental health of recent generations of youth is deteriorating, yet the etiology of these secular changes is not fully understood. We aimed to review the evidence on trends in mental health problems among young people in Norway. Seven large-scale repeated cross-sectional studies were included in this study, comprising 35 cross-sectional data collections between 1992 and 2019, with a total sample of 776,606 young people. Our study found a clear increase in mental health problems among young females in Norway over the past few decades, while the trends were less marked for males. The proportion of individuals scoring above the problematic symptom score threshold increased on average by 11.2% (range 2.2% to 21.9%) for females and 5.2% (range − 0.9% to 11.1%) for males, based on data from the individual studies. The results from a meta-regression analysis showed that across all surveys, mean symptom scores increased by 17% (95% CI 12 to 21%) among females and 5% (95% CI 1 to 9%) among males from 1992 to 2019. Overall, mental health problems have increased continually since the early 1990s among young people, especially among young females. The cause of these secular changes remains unknown but likely reflect the interplay of several factors at the individual and societal level. What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to explore the long - term trends of Norwegian adolescents' mental health problems. Specifically, the research aims to comprehensively analyze the changes in Norwegian adolescents' mental health problems over the past few decades, with particular attention to the growth trend of female adolescents' mental health problems. The study evaluates the changing trends of Norwegian adolescents' mental health problems between 1992 and 2019 and explores gender differences by aggregating and analyzing data from seven large - scale repeated cross - sectional surveys. ### Main research questions: 1. **What are the long - term trends of Norwegian adolescents' mental health problems?** - The research explores the changing trends of Norwegian adolescents' mental health problems between 1992 and 2019 by analyzing data from multiple repeated cross - sectional surveys. 2. **How are gender differences manifested in the trends of mental health problems?** - The research pays special attention to whether the mental health problems of female adolescents increase more significantly than those of male adolescents. 3. **What are the potential causes of these trends?** - Although the research does not directly explore the causes, it points out that these trends may reflect the interaction of various factors at the individual and social levels. ### Research background: - In recent years, the proportion of adolescents reporting mental health problems has increased in high - income countries, especially among female adolescents. - Norway is one of the Nordic countries with the most significant increase in adolescents' mental health problems. - Through systematic review and meta - analysis methods, the research aims to better understand these long - term changing trends and their potential impacts. ### Research methods: - **Data sources**: The research included seven large - scale repeated cross - sectional surveys, including a total of 35 cross - sectional data collections, with a total sample size of 776,606 adolescents. - **Analysis methods**: Linear regression and logistic regression were used to analyze data from individual surveys, and then the results were aggregated through multi - level meta - regression analysis. ### Main findings: - **Overall trend**: The mental health problems of Norwegian adolescents have been continuously increasing over the past few decades, especially among female adolescents. - **Gender differences**: The increase in mental health problems among female adolescents is more obvious. From 1992 to 2019, it increased by an average of 17%, while among male adolescents, it increased by 5%. - **Specific data**: Among female adolescents, the proportion exceeding the problem symptom score threshold (≥2) increased by an average of 11.2%, while among male adolescents, it increased by 5.2%. ### Conclusions: - The research shows that the mental health problems of Norwegian adolescents have increased significantly over the past few decades, especially among female adolescents. These trends reflect the interaction of various factors at the social and individual levels, and further research is needed to clarify the specific causes. ### Significance: - Understanding these long - term trends is of great significance for public health, education, healthcare services and policy - making. - The research results provide a scientific basis for formulating targeted intervention measures, which is helpful for improving the mental health status of adolescents.
