Abstract:Only one third of the world average can be found in the per capita farmland in China. Furthermore, a large number of high-quality cultivated land has been occupied and replaced by low-quality farmland with the continuous development of urbanization in recent years. The unsuitable or uncultivable distribution of farmland in areas（such as beaches and mountains）has posed a serious threat to the national security of farmland. Great challenges have also been put the national food security in the context of emergencies, such as epidemics and disasters. It is a high demand for the high level self-sufficiency in food production under a large population during this time. In this study, a new understanding was offered to protect the farmland system, in order to change the perception from the farmland system to the cultivatable land. The ecological niche model and geographic information system（GIS） were used to measure the scale size and spatial distribution of cultivatable land, current farmland, and construction land. Firstly, the amount of cultivatable land was sufficient with the outstanding difference in spatial distribution. The cultivatable land was sufficient in the east of Chinese Heihe-Tengchongn line, where the area was approximately 2.05 times that of the current farmland. Secondly, there was the uneven quality of current farmland, where the less current farmland was distributed in the highly cultivable areas. There was an outstanding location difference in cultivatable land quality. The cultivatable land showed a hierarchical level in different areas, where the quality gradually decreased from the southeast to the northwest of China. Thirdly, there was a spatial mismatch between the cultivatable land and the current farmland. About 16.83% of the current farmland was in the unsuitable area for cultivation. The current farmland was distributed in the uncultivable areas, where the low quality of farmland led to low production in the essential goal of farmland protection, due to the mismatch between the cultivatable land and current farmland. The proposal of cultivatable land was provided the direction for the transformation of farmland protection. The "grain-land" mismatch rate of farmland also reduced resource consumption and environmental pollution. The cultivatable land grading and zoning protection were carried out to appropriately adjust the layout of current and new farmland, in order to realize the fertile land for grain use and storage. At the same time, the protection of cultivatable land can greatly contribute to the cultivatable capacity of the land,in order to avoid the encroachment and squeezing of the cultivatable land, due to urbanization. The retention of enough land can be expected to fully meet the possible future farming needs. Therefore, sufficient cultivatable land can be provided in time for agricultural production.

Abstract:Arable land is one of the most important resources for agriculture.Quality of the arable land is an important basis for food security of the nation,and quality safety of agricultural produce.Based on the literature available,the status quo of the study on conception of and evaluation methods for arable land quality was generalized and summarized.It is held that arable land quality is a multi-level conception,containing four levels of connotations,i.e.soil quality,geographic quality,management quality and economic quality,and its evaluation indices include natural and socio-economic factors.On such a basis,changes in the arable land quality of China were analyzed.It was found that on the whole the arable land quality of the country is quite low.However,its fertility quality,management quality and economic quality are gradually turning good while its health quality and environmental quality are getting worse and the problems of arable land quality in some areas are very serious.In light of the situation of the country,proposals are brought forward for construction and management of the arable land quality in China.
Ensuring Food Security with Lower Environmental Costs under Intensive Agricultural Land Use Patterns: A Case Study from China.

Abstract:Rapid population growth and environmental deterioration make ensuring food security with lower environmental costs fundamental to realizing sustainable development in China and other developing countries. The conceptual framework used in this paper integrates the major consequences of intensive agricultural land use and the diverse objectives of policymakers and farmers. It also offers an operational approach, based on farmers' diverse performance in grain production and farmland productivity, to assess food production and environmental impacts under foci-differentiated scenarios. Using data from farmer household surveys, soil surveys, land use images, and statistical yearbooks, this approach was tested using a regional case in China. The results indicate that, among all farmer types, the medium-scale farmers had a better comprehensive performance for grain production for yield, fertilizer and pesticide inputs, labor productivity, and sustainability. Therefore, grain yields can be increased and environmental costs reduced simultaneously through the use of policy instruments that encourage the transformation of trapped farmers into medium-scale farmers and balancing the proportion of single and double cropped rice. In addition, and in order to reduce grain losses caused by natural disasters and to prevent environmental degradation, robust policy measures should be developed to avoid the currently predominant cropping patterns that erode biodiversity.

Abstract:Arable land is the natural resource of food production, plays a key role in safe guarding people's livelihood, maintaining social stability, and ecological balance. In the context of the great challenge of rapid loss of arable land and rapid growth of food demand due to rapid socio-economic development, scientific forecasting of arable land demand and supply, can clarify the conservation pressure of regional arable land, provide a reference for formulating effective arable land policies, and ensuring regional food security and sustainable development. Therefore, with the help of system dynamics model and Gray-Markov model, this study predicts and analyzes the balance of arable land supply and demand in China, and reached the following conclusions. (1) During the projection period, with the continuous development of living standards and agricultural technology, both per capita food demand and food production show an upward trend. However, the combined effects of changes in diet structure and grain yields on changes in arable land demand are smaller than those brought about by population changes. Therefore, the trend of arable land demand is similar to that of population change, and the arable land demand in China reaches a peak of 112.78 million hm2 in 2026. (2) The amount of arable land possession is always greater than the amount of arable land replenishment, and the arable land supply area shows a continuous decreasing trend, and the arable land supply in China is 127.16 million hm2 in 2035. (3) China's supply holdings are all able to meet the demand of China's arable land, but combined with existing studies, it is insufficient to meet the demand of crop rotation fallow between 2023 and 2030, which is not conducive to sustainable development. In the future, arable land protection policies should be comprehensively improved and strictly implemented to ensure national food security and achieve sustainable use of arable land.

Abstract:Grasping cropland abandonment patterns in China can help protect croplands, thereby ensuring the perpetuation of nationwide food security. However, the pattern of long-term cropland abandonment at the national scale remains limited. Here, we investigate the spatiotemporal patterns and drivers of cropland abandonment across China during 1990-2019 by integrating continuous long-term series of land cover, natural factors, and socioeconomic data. We find that the mean abandoned cropland area is 2.34 x 104 km2 per year. The spatial pattern of cropland and natural factors are prime drivers of cropland abandonment, but there is a substantial variation across agricultural regions. Further analysis suggests that annual food loss due to cropland abandonment is about 7.94 billion kilograms, which could feed 19.85 million people. These findings allow for a better understanding of the spatial heterogeneity and driving forces of cropland abandonment patterns, and inspire to govern global cropland abandonment and formulate relevant policies.

Abstract:Food security concerns the economy, people's livelihood and social stability of a country or region. Countries around the world always put food security on their high-priority political agenda. As the most populous developing country in the world, China produces one-fourth of the world's food and feeds one-fifth of the population. Therefore, China's food security has attracted global attention. However, systematic research on China's food security is still insufficient. This study systematically reviewed the key issues facing China's food (supply) security, identified the potential factors affecting the county's grain production, and put forward countermeasures to further ensure food security. Results show that over the past four decades, China's rural population decreased significantly, and cultivated land area decreased in the south and increased in the north, and grain output risen in volatility. China's food security is latent with regional, structural and technical crises, and further ensuring China's food security is faced with many challenges. Potential factors affecting China's food security include the rapid farmland conversion, the aging and weakening of farmers, the spatial mismatch of water-land resources and grain production, the periodicity and instability of climate change, and the unbalanced spatial coupling of population, land and grain (PLG) system. Differentiated and oriented response measures to resolve regional and structural issues should be adopted to further ensure China's food security.

Abstract:Land degradation is an important problem facing the world. China's attention and scientific research on land degradation started relatively late, and it is still in the process of understanding and deepening in many aspects. Important scientific issues such as the concept of land degradation, the causes and classification of degradation, the monitoring indicators and means of degradation, the evaluation system and the early warning mechanism are still in the early stage of discussion, and the academic circles at home and abroad are still in the stage of controversial exploration in many aspects, and no general consensus has been formed so far. Therefore, through the research and analysis of domestic and foreign literature, this paper summarized the meaning of land degradation, analyzed the current situation of land degradation research and the impact of land degradation on China's food security, in order to provide scientific basis for land degradation prevention and management, and provide decision-making basis for improving the quantity and quality of arable land in China and ensuring food security.

Abstract:Cultivated land is the most important natural resource for human survival and development. The quality of cultivated land is closely related to grain output, and whether it can guarantee stable food supply is directly related to national food security. Cultivated land quality evaluation is an effective tool for understanding and mastering cultivated land quality. However, few studies have applied bibliometrics to quantitatively and systematically analyze this field. We used VOSviewer 1.6.19 and CiteSpace 6.3.1 software to visually analyze and construct 2478 documents related to cultivated land quality evaluation retrieved from the Web of Science core collection database from 2000 to 2023. Results show that cultivated land quality evaluation is still a popular research field. The collaboration ability among authors is weak and the distribution of institutions and countries publishing in this field is very uneven. In addition, the relevant research has been published in a variety of journals such as agriculture, environment, ecology, and computer technology. The research content is becoming more and more interdisciplinary. Keywords such as "Soil quality", "Swat", "Remote sensing", "Heavy metals" and "Ecosystem services" have become hot topics in this field. In the future, it is necessary to further deepen the connotation of cultivated land quality, develop a long time series dynamic model of cultivated land quality evaluation and monitoring, and enhance the transformation of research results into practical applications.

Abstract:As the global food supply chain becomes increasingly unstable, food security is gaining importance in China. Nevertheless, factors such as water scarcity, limited land resources, and global climate change pose great challenges to increasing food production. Therefore, it is crucial to explore sustainable development models for food systems. In this paper, a multi-objective crop layout model considering crop rotation is constructed and solved using the INSGA2-DS algorithm. Various precipitation scenarios were established for climate change. Data analysis and optimization were conducted under different precipitation scenarios. Applied in the plain area of southwestern Shandong Province, the model can increase soybean yield by 6.78%, net carbon sequestration intensity by 0.04%, net benefit by 2.09%, and crop water productivity by 3.91% during a median flow year. Optimization tends to increase the total area planted with food crops during wet years and decrease it during dry years. The optimization model can enhance water productivity and carbon sequestration intensity of crops, as well as prevent unreasonable fluctuations in the area planted with food crops. This enables the benefits of water conservation and yield increase to be fully utilized, and reduces yield and economic losses due to dry years. The models help to rationally allocate soil and water resources, effectively respond to climate change risks, and provide robust decision support for regional food crop planning.

Abstract:Sustainable use and management of soil quality in Huang-Huai-Hai plain are critical to China's food security because it produces almost 35% of China's maize and 70% of wheat. Historically, soil quality of cropland was low due to salinization by topographic, hydrologic, and hydrogeologic conditions. Thus, a series of reclamation techniques for salt-affected soils were implemented. The widespread adoption of recommended techniques of soil reclamation improved soil quality. Consequently, soil organic carbon (SOC) was improved between the 1980s and 2010s, and SOC concentration is 12.34 g kg(-1) in Quzhou and 6.0-13.4 g kg(-1) in Yucheng. However, sustainable improvement in soil quality can also face major challenges of groundwater depletion, greenhouse gas emissions, excessive agricultural intensification, and the potential adverse effects on salt balance affected by increase in temperature. Strategies such as sustainable intensification, increase in SOC, and decrease in salt content must be the research priority for improving soil quality.

Abstract:There are large regional differences regarding the use of phosphorus (P) fertilizer in global crop production. Likewise, people's accesses to crop calories and exposure to water pollution differ largely among world regions. The use of P fertilizer is needed to meet agricultural requirement and solve these inequalities. We developed a multi-objective framework for optimizing P fertilizer use that considered water quality, food security and social equality. Different optimal objectives yield contrasting results for the geographical distribution of P fertilizer use, crop calorie production and social equality. Optimized P fertilizer use without recycling P management may pose a threat to global food security. Approximately 3 %-43 % of the current global crop calorie production may be decreased, and inequality in access to crop calories may also increase. Overall, although a multi-objective framework to optimize the use of P fertilizer reduces crop calorie yield, it can help intergenerational equality of P fertilizer use and improve water quality.
A New Grading System for Evaluating China's Cultivated Land Quality

Abstract:Cultivated land is crucial to food security, social and economic stability, environmental quality, and sustainable urban-rural development in China and around the world. However, most of the current grading systems for evaluating cultivated land quality in China tend to generate homogeneous results and inadequate spatial descriptions mainly due to the use of a composite index method that often fails to recognize the matching relationship between land use needs and the quality of cultivated land. The purpose of this study is to propose a new grading system for evaluating China's cultivated land quality that involves two index systems and a scoring and grading scheme. In the proposed system, cultivated land quality is redefined in terms of production capacity quality and environmental quality, and the minimum limiting factor method and the weighted linear model are coupled for factor scoring and grading. The new system is demonstrated by a case-study in Yimen Town, a loess plateau region in western China's Shaanxi Province. The results of this study clearly indicate that the new grading system is superior to the current system when compared using two methods: the spatial pattern comparison method and the crop performance validation method. The results are also favorable in terms of matching relationships between the subclasses of cultivated land quality versus soil types and landforms. The new grading system not only helps to better understand the cultivated land quality but also provides a clear direction for science-based remediation and amelioration of cultivated land.

Abstract:Quality is the core feature of cultivated land. In the face of deteriorating cultivated land quality and growing food demand, improving cultivated land quality is a top priority for guaranteeing the sustainable use of resources and national food security. Cultivated land quality in the new era can be considered in four dimensions: suitability, contiguity, resistance and ecological stress. Cultivated land suitability in China shows a decreasing trend from east to west, cultivated land contiguity is high in the north-east and low in the south-west. In terms of cultivated land resistance, the number of strongly and weakly resistant cropping fields is small and spatially clustered. Cultivated land with ecological stress is mainly located in the northern region. Based on the current situation of cultivated land quality and the strategic needs of national high-quality development, China's future goals for improving cultivated land quality include four aspects: promoting the sustainable use of resources,improving the economic benefits of farming, coping with extreme meteorological disasters and meeting the transition of the food system.Against the backdrop of a volatile international environment and high domestic demand for food, China should guarantee a safe supply of staples, a stable supply of animal feed and a moderate supply of high-nutrient food. In the future, China should create three major food production spaces: highstandard, low-to medium-yield, and marginal cultivated land. China urgently needs to construct three paths to implement the goal of improving cultivated land quality, namely the development of high-standard cultivated land with the core of spatial optimization, resilience enhancement and scale coupling,the transformation of low-to medium-yield cultivated land with the core of obstacle elimination, tenure adjustment, ecological sustainable, and the conservation development of marginal cultivated land with a focus on sustainable use.

Abstract:China's increasingly urbanized and wealthy population is driving a growing and changing demand for food, which might not be met without significant increase in agricultural productivity and sustainable use of natural resources. Given the past relationship between lack of access to affordable food and political instability, food security has to be given a high priority on national political agendas in the context of globalization. The drive for increased food production has had a significant impact on the environment, and the deterioration in ecosystem quality due to historic and current levels of pollution will potentially compromise the food production system in China. We discuss the grand challenges of not only producing more food but also producing it sustainably and without environmental degradation. In addressing these challenges, food production should be considered as part of an environmental system (soil, air, water, and biodiversity) and not independent from it. It is imperative that new ways of meeting the demand for food are developed while safeguarding the natural resources upon which food production is based. We present a holistic approach to both science and policy to ensure future food security while embracing the ambition of achieving environmental sustainability in China. It is a unique opportunity for China to be a role model as a new global player, especially for other emerging economies.
An integrated accounting system of quantity, quality and value for assessing cultivated land resource assets: A case study in Xinjiang, China

Abstract:Assessing cultivated land resource assets is a prerequisite for resource management and cultivated land protection. Existing methods on the physical quantity usually ignore the change in cultivated land quality and on the value quantity lack a unified standard framework. In this study, the calorific value was introduced to calculate the physical quantity and an integrated accounting system with quantity, quality and value was established based on the substitution market, income reduction, and equivalent factor methods. Taking 14 cities in Xinjiang as the study area, the physical and value quantities from 1990 to 2018 were calculated and analyzed to reveal the change characteristics of cultivated land resource assets. The results showed that: (1) the overall quality of cultivated land in Xinjiang improved with a fluctuating growth trend, and the cultivated land area and physical quantity increased by 58.89% and 64.54%, respectively; (2) from 1990 to 2018, a slow-to-fast increase in the total value of cultivated land was observed accompanied with a spatial distribution of "high in the northwest and low in the east". The proportion of social value grew fast, increasing from 64.02% to 83.55%, with an average annual growth rate of CNY 566.95 billion/yr; (3) during the study period, the value structure (social value: economic value: ecological value) of cultivated land resource assets in Xinjiang changed from 64.03:17.56:18.41 to 83.55:3.38:13.07. The social, economic, and ecological value of cultivated land per unit area increased by 11.74, 1.98, 5.94 times, respectively. The accounting system proposed in this study has the advantages of clear indicator meaning and good data availability, which is helpful to achieve cross-regional and cross-period comparison of cultivated land resource assets. These findings provide a reference for the scientific management and sustainable utilization of cultivated land resources in Xinjiang and similar oasis agricultural areas.

Abstract:Cultivated land plays a pivotal role in ensuring national food security, particularly in populous nations like China, where substantial investments are made to develop cultivated land as a counterbalance to construction-occupied areas. Consequently, long-term, effective monitoring of the utilization of newly cultivated land becomes imperative. This study introduces a comprehensive monitoring framework, designed for refined scales, that leverages remote sensing data. The framework focuses on the sustainable utilization of newly cultivated land, emphasizing utilization sustainability, productivity stability, and landscape integration. Its effectiveness was validated through a case study in Guangdong province, China. The results revealed satisfactory utilization sustainability and improved productivity stability of newly cultivated land in Guangdong, though landscape integration showed sub-optimal results. Furthermore, the comprehensive evaluation categorized the newly cultivated land into three levels and eight types. The study recommends enhancing the site selection process for newly cultivated land and improving the long-term monitoring, as well as incentive and constraint mechanisms, for their utilization. This study can provide a scientific reference to bolster the implementation of cultivated land protection policies, thereby contributing significantly to high-quality economic and social development.

Challenges Threatening Agricultural Sustainability in Central Asia: Status and Prospect

Abstract:Agriculture provides humanity with the most basic products to sustain life and raw materials for production, closely linking human society and nature together. The sustainable development of agriculture, an inevitable choice to maintain long-term social stability, steady economic growth, and ecological security, is the key to the coordinated development of the economy, society, and environment in developing Central Asia economies. We attempted to evaluate the trend of agricultural sustainability in Central Asia between 2002 and 2017 by adopting analytic hierarchy process and entropy weight method in this study. It was found that the overall sustainability level of regional agriculture is rising, which is mainly driven by economic progress, with social and ecological dimensions contributing much less. Accordingly, we advanced four suggestions: enhancing water productivity, optimizing planting techniques, improving agricultural cooperatives, and promoting digital land management to boost the agricultural sustainability of the region.
