Abstract:Nanoconfinement entropic effects on chemical equilibrium involving a small number of molecules, which we term NCECE, are revealed by two widely diverse types of reactions. Employing statistical-mechanical principles, we show how the NCECE effect stabilizes nucleotide dimerization observed within self-assembled molecular cages. Furthermore, the effect provides the basis for dimerization even under an aqueous environment inside the nanocage. Likewise, the NCECE effect is pertinent to a longstanding issue in astrochemistry, namely the extra deuteration commonly observed for molecules reacting on interstellar dust grain surfaces. The origin of the NCECE effect is elucidated by means of the probability distributions of the reaction extent and related variations in the reactant-product mixing entropy. Theoretical modelling beyond our previous preliminary work highlights the role of the nanospace size in addition to that of the nanosystem size, namely the limited amount of molecules in the reaction mixture. Furthermore, the NCECE effect can depend also on the reaction mechanism, and on deviations from stoichiometry. The NCECE effect, leading to enhanced, greatly variable equilibrium "constants", constitutes a unique physical-chemical phenomenon, distinguished from the usual thermodynamical properties of macroscopically large systems. Being significant particularly for weakly exothermic reactions, the effects should stabilize products in other closed nanoscale structures, and thus can have notable implications for the growing nanotechnological utilization of chemical syntheses conducted within confined nanoreactors.
Proposal for a Quantum Delayed-Choice Experiment with Massive Mechanical Resonators.

Abstract:We present and analyze an experimentally-feasible implementation of a macroscopic quantum delayed-choice experiment to test a quantum wave-particle superposition on massive mechanical resonators. In our approach, the electronic spin of a single nitrogen-vacancy impurity is employed to control the coherent coupling between the mechanical modes of two carbon nanotubes. We demonstrate that a mechanical phonon can be in a coherent superposition of wave and particle, thus exhibiting both behaviors at the same time. Furthermore, we discuss the mechanical noise tolerable in our proposal and predict a critical temperature below which the morphing between wave and particle states can be effectively observed in the presence of environment-induced fluctuations.
Approach to Equilibrium in Nano-Scale Systems at Finite Temperature

Abstract:We study the time evolution of the reduced density matrix of a system of spin-1/2 particles interacting with an environment of spin-1/2 particles. The initial state of the composite system is taken to be a product state of a pure state of the system and a pure state of the environment. The latter pure state is prepared such that it represents the environment at a given finite temperature in the canonical ensemble. The state of the composite system evolves according to the time-dependent Schrodinger equation, the interaction creating entanglement between the system and the environment. It is shown that independent of the strength of the interaction and the initial temperature of the environment, all the eigenvalues of the reduced density matrix converge to their stationary values, implying that also the entropy of the system relaxes to a stationary value. We demonstrate that the difference between the canonical density matrix and the reduced density matrix in the stationary state increases as the initial temperature of the environment decreases. As our numerical simulations are necessarily restricted to a modest number of spin-1/2 particles (<36), but do not rely on time-averaging of observables nor on the assumption that the coupling between system and environment is weak, they suggest that the stationary state of the system directly follows from the time evolution of a pure state of the composite system, even if the size of the latter cannot be regarded as being close to the thermodynamic limit.
Adsorption under nanoconfinement: a theoretical-computational study revealing significant enhancement beyond the Langmuirian levels

Abstract:The principal goal of this work is to predict characteristics unique to equilibrated adsorption of a small number of molecules on atomic sites located inside a closed nanoscale space. Compared to the thermodynamic limit of macroscopic systems, significantly enlarged adsorbate coverage under nanoconfinement constitutes a major finding of the modeling. Concomitantly, nanoconfined adsorbates are expected to exhibit extra thermal stability against desorption. These effects on adsorption are explored using canonical partition-functions as well as an original relationship between coverage variations and the Langmuir constant, both in the frameworks of the ideal gas and lattice-gas models. With reported DFT adsorption-energies as input, adsorption isotherms are derived numerically for H2 on Ti-doped graphene-like nanostructures. Remarkable deviations from the classical Langmuir isotherm are predicted for the first time, namely, system-size dependent enhanced H2 adsorbate coverage. The effects are computed also for CO2 inside MOF single-molecule traps, including their relationships to adsorption-energy, specific-heat and to coverage fluctuations. According to preliminary modeling, nanoconfinement effects are anticipated also for adsorption in nanopores undergoing molecular exchange with the external environment, and for impurity segregation in nanoparticle and nanocrystalline solids. The entropic origin of the nanoconfinement effect on equilibrium adsorption (NCEEA) is demonstrated analogously to the nanoconfinement effect on equilibrated chemical reactions studied by us previously. Besides unraveling some basic theoretical issues in physical nanochemistry, this study is expected to be pertinent to nanotechnological applications, such as gas storage and separation in nanoporous materials and other solid adsorbents.

Jorge Hirsch drew attention to the contradiction of the Meissner effect with Faraday's law and the law of angular momentum conservation. This article draws attention to the fact that the angular momentum can change without any force only due to quantization in both microscopic and macroscopic quantum phenomena. But if in the first case this change cannot exceed the Planck constant, then in the second case this change is macroscopic due to a violation of the correspondence principle. To explain the violation of the correspondence principle, Lev Landau postulated in 1941 that microscopic particles in superfluid helium and superconductor cannot move separately. Quantization can change not only the angular momentum, but also the kinetic energy of a superconducting condensate on a macroscopic amount. For this reason, the Meissner effect and other macroscopic quantum phenomena contradict the second law of thermodynamics. The reluctance of physicists to admit the violation of the second law of thermodynamics provoked a false understanding of the phenomenon of superconductivity and obvious contradictions in books on superconductivity. Abstract:A confined system of noninteracting electrons, subject to the combined effect of a time-dependent potential and different external chemical potentials, is considered. The current flowing through such a system is obtained by using the adiabatic approximation in an iterative manner. A formula is derived for the charge pumped through an unbiased system (all external chemical potentials are kept at the same value); it reproduces the Brouwer formula for a two-terminal nanostructure. The formalism presented yields the effect of the chemical-potential bias on the pumped charge on one hand, and the modification of the Landauer formula (which gives the current in response to a constant chemical-potential difference) brought about by the modulating potential on the other. Corrections to the adiabatic approximation are derived and discussed.

Abstract:Chemical reactions inside cells are typically subject to the effects both of the cell's confining surfaces and of the viscoelastic behavior of its contents. In this paper, we show how the outcome of one particular reaction of relevance to cellular biochemistry - the diffusion-limited cyclization of long chain polymers - is influenced by such confinement and crowding effects. More specifically, starting from the Rouse model of polymer dynamics, and invoking the Wilemski-Fixman approximation, we determine the scaling relationship between the mean closure time t_{c} of a flexible chain (no excluded volume or hydrodynamic interactions) and the length N of its contour under the following separate conditions: (a) confinement of the chain to a sphere of radius D, and (b) modulation of its dynamics by colored Gaussian noise. Among other results, we find that in case (a) when D is much smaller than the size of the chain, t_{c}\simND^{2}, and that in case (b), t_{c}\simN^{2/(2-2H)}, H being a number between 1/2 and 1 that characterizes the decay of the noise correlations. H is not known à priori, but values of about 0.7 have been used in the successful characterization of protein conformational dynamics. At this value of H (selected for purposes of illustration), t_{c}\simN^3.4, the high scaling exponent reflecting the slow relaxation of the chain in a viscoelastic medium.

Abstract:Machines operating at the atomic level are of fundamental interests for information manipulation and communication. However, preparation of thermodynamically stable states and regulation of transitions between them at a low energy cost are challenging. We report that, by enforcing nanoconfinement and surface gating, one can control the configurations and dynamics of ions for computational tasks. The layered structures of water confined in nanochannels render the spatial and temporal correlation between ions, offering a number of distinct states with paired configurations. Free energy barriers for transitions between them are on the order of kBT, allowing modulation through external fields or surface charges at a low energy cost. Ionic switches, rectifiers, and logical gates are constructed following the physical rules elucidated at the molecular level, opening an avenue toward artificial nanofluidic functionalities such as efficient ionic machinery by configuring the ionic pairs and controlled mass/charge transport by tuning the strength of correlation.

Abstract:An atom attached to a micrometer-scale wire that is vibrating at a frequency of 100 MHz and with displacement amplitude 1 nm experiences an acceleration magnitude 10^9 ms^-2, approaching the surface gravity of a neutron star. As one application of such extreme non-inertial forces in a mesoscopic setting, we consider a model two-path atom interferometer with one path consisting of the 100 MHz vibrating wire atom guide. The vibrating wire guide serves as a non-inertial reference frame and induces an in principle measurable phase shift in the wave function of an atom traversing the wire frame. We furthermore consider the effect on the two-path atom wave interference when the vibrating wire is modeled as a quantum object, hence functioning as a quantum non-inertial reference frame. We outline a possible realization of the vibrating wire, atom interferometer using a superfluid helium quantum interference setup.

Abstract:Nano-NMR spectroscopy with nitrogen-vacancy centers holds the potential to provide high resolution spectra of minute samples. This is likely to have important implications for chemistry, medicine and pharmaceutical engineering. One of the main hurdles facing the technology is that diffusion of unpolarized liquid samples broadens the spectral lines thus limiting resolution. Experiments in the field are therefore impeded by the efforts involved in achieving high polarization of the sample which is a challenging endeavor. Here we examine a scenario where the liquid is confined to a small volume. We show that the confinement 'counteracts' the effect of diffusion, thus overcoming a major obstacle to the resolving abilities of the NV-NMR spectrometer.

Abstract:We are looking at an aggregation of matter into granules. Diffusion plays a pivotal role here. When going down to the nanometer scale (the so-called nanoscale quantum-size effect limit), quantum mechanics, and the Heisenberg uncertainty relation, may take over the role of classical diffusion, as viewed typically in the mesoscopic/stochastic limit. A d-dimensional entropy-production aggregation of the granules-involving matter in the granule-size space is considered in terms of a (sub)diffusive realization. It turns out that when taking a full d-dimensional pathway of the aggregation toward the nanoscale, one is capable of disclosing a Heisenberg-type (diffusional) relation, setting up an upper uncertainty bound for the (sub)diffusive, very slow granules-including environment that, within the granule-size analogy invoked, matches the quantum limit of h/2πμ (μ—average mass of a granule; h—the Planck's constant) for the diffusion coefficient of the aggregation, first proposed by Fürth in 1933 and qualitatively foreseen by Schrödinger some years before, with both in the context of a diffusing particle. The classical quantum passage uncovered here, also termed insightfully as the quantum-size effect (as borrowed from the quantum dots' parlance), works properly for the three-dimensional (d = 3) case, making use of a substantial physical fact that the (nano)granules interact readily via their surfaces with the also-granular surroundings in which they are immersed. This natural observation is embodied in the basic averaging construction of the diffusion coefficient of the entropy-productive (nano)aggregation of interest.

Abstract:A nanoscale object evidenced in a nonclassical state of its center of mass will hugely extend the boundaries of quantum mechanics. To obtain a practical scheme for the same, we exploit a hitherto unexplored coupled system: an atom and a nanoparticle coupled by an optical field. We show how to control the center of mass of a large ∼500 -nm nanoparticle using the internal state of the atom so as to create, as well as detect, nonclassical motional states of the nanoparticle. Specifically, we consider a setup based on a silica nanoparticle coupled to a cesium atom and discuss a protocol for preparing and verifying a Schrödinger-cat state of the nanoparticle that does not require cooling to the motional ground state. Dynamics and Bloch oscillations of mobile impurities in one-dimensional quantum liquids

Abstract:We study dynamics of a mobile impurity moving in a one-dimensional quantum liquid. Such an impurity induces a strong non-linear depletion of the liquid around it. The dispersion relation of the combined object, called depleton, is a periodic function of its momentum with the period 2\pi n, where n is the mean density of the liquid. In the adiabatic approximation a constant external force acting on the impurity leads to the Bloch oscillations of the impurity around a fixed position. Dynamically such oscillations are accompanied by the radiation of energy in the form of phonons. The ensuing energy loss results in the uniform drift of the oscillation center. We derive exact results for the radiation-induced mobility as well as the thermal friction force in terms of the equilibrium dispersion relation of the dressed impurity (depleton). These results show that there is a wide range of external forces where the (drifted) Bloch oscillations exist and may be observed experimentally.

Abstract:Understanding the influence of vibrational motion of the atoms on electronic transitions in molecules constitutes a cornerstone of quantum physics, as epitomized by the Franck-Condon principle of spectroscopy. Recent advances in building molecular-electronics devices and nanoelectromechanical systems open a new arena for studying the interaction between mechanical and electronic degrees of freedom in transport at the single-molecule level. The tunneling of electrons through molecules or suspended quantum dots has been shown to excite vibrational modes, or vibrons. Beyond this effect, theory predicts that strong electron-vibron coupling dramatically suppresses the current flow at low biases, a collective behaviour known as Franck-Condon blockade. Here we show measurements on quantum dots formed in suspended single-wall carbon nanotubes revealing a remarkably large electron-vibron coupling and, due to the high quality and unprecedented tunability of our samples, admit a quantitative analysis of vibron-mediated electronic transport in the regime of strong electron-vibron coupling. This allows us to unambiguously demonstrate the Franck-Condon blockade in a suspended nanostructure. The large observed electron-vibron coupling could ultimately be a key ingredient for the detection of quantized mechanical motion. It also emphasizes the unique potential for nanoelectromechanical device applications based on suspended graphene sheets and carbon nanotubes.

Abstract:Abstract Chemical reactions generically require that particles come into contact. In practice, reaction is often imperfect and can necessitate multiple random encounters between reactants. In confined geometries, despite notable recent advances, there is to date no general analytical treatment of such imperfect transport-limited reaction kinetics. Here, we determine the kinetics of imperfect reactions in confining domains for any diffusive or anomalously diffusive Markovian transport process, and for different models of imperfect reactivity. We show that the full distribution of reaction times is obtained in the large confining volume limit from the knowledge of the mean reaction time only, which we determine explicitly. This distribution for imperfect reactions is found to be identical to that of perfect reactions upon an appropriate rescaling of parameters, which highlights the robustness of our results. Strikingly, this holds true even in the regime of low reactivity where the mean reaction time is independent of the transport process, and can lead to large fluctuations of the reaction time - even in simple reaction schemes. We illustrate our results for normal diffusion in domains of generic shape, and for anomalous diffusion in complex environments, where our predictions are confirmed by numerical simulations.

Perpetual motion and driven dynamics of a mobile impurity in a quantum fluid

Abstract:We study the dynamics of a mobile impurity in a quantum fluid at zero temperature. Two related settings are considered. In the first setting the impurity is injected in the fluid with some initial velocity ${\mathbf v}_0$, and we are interested in its velocity at infinite time, ${\mathbf v}_\infty$. We derive a rigorous upper bound on $|{\mathbf v}_0-{\mathbf v}_\infty|$ for initial velocities smaller than the generalized critical velocity. In the limit of vanishing impurity-fluid coupling this bound amounts to ${\mathbf v}_\infty={\mathbf v}_0$ which can be regarded as a rigorous proof of the Landau criterion of superfluidity. In the case of a finite coupling the velocity of the impurity can drop, but not to zero; the bound quantifies the maximal possible drop. In the second setting a small constant force is exerted upon the impurity. We argue that two distinct dynamical regimes exist -- backscattering oscillations of the impurity velocity and saturation of the velocity without oscillations. For fluids with $v_{c {\rm L}}=v_s$ (where $v_{c {\rm L}}$ and $v_s$ are the Landau critical velocity and sound velocity, respectively) the latter regime is realized. For fluids with $v_{c {\rm L}} < v_s$ both regimes are possible. Which regime is realized in this case depends on the mass of the impurity, a nonequilibrium quantum phase transition occurring at some critical mass. Our results are equally valid in one, two and three dimensions.

Abstract:In this Letter, we present a simple mechanism that explains the recent experimental observation of the breakdown of the Nernst-Einstein (NE) relation for an ion moving in a carbon nanotube of subnanometer diameter. We argue that the friction acting on the ion is largely independent of the ion velocity, i.e., dry friction, and demonstrate, based on the Langevin equation for a particle subject to both dry and viscous friction, that the NE relation is violated when dry friction dominates. We predict that the ratio of the diffusion constant to the mobility of the ion is a few orders of magnitude smaller than the value predicted by the NE relation, in quantitative agreement with experiment. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevLett.132.194001 © 2024 American Physical Society

Abstract:Highly efficient chemical reactions are vital for the development of green growth and sustaining industrial society, yet achieving effective flow reactions under mild conditions remains challenging. In a recent research article published in Matter, Pang and colleagues 1 achieved a nanoconfined superfluid-based chemical reaction with ∼100% conversion and reaction time of less than 29 s at 22°C using multilayer aminated graphene oxide nanoconfined membranes. These findings highlight the potential for nanoconfined membranes to revolutionize the field of chemical synthesis.
