Abstract:Stratigraphic correlation is considered to be the solving of chronological problems using sequences of geologic events. This paper reviews 5 assumptions made for correlation using fossils. Paleontological events (endpoints of ranges of taxa observed in geologic sections) can be arranged to form an ordinal time scale common to all sections studied by adopting either a probabilistic or a deterministic approach. The latter maximizes the relative range of a taxon in time whereas the former estimates the average range. To establish simultaneity of two distant events would require a continuous and equal-interval time scale. Because paleontological scales are not of this type, a formalized use of the relation “later” is suggested for stratigraphic correlation by means of ordinal scales.
