Abstract:The water occurrences play a significant role in shaping CWS (Coal-water slurry) performances which is vital for both gasification and combustion. This paper compares CWS prepared by lignite with traditional fuel CWS made of bituminous coal. The compositions and freedom degrees of water in CWSs were investigated by thermogravimetry analysis and LF-NMR (Low Field Nuclear Magnetic Resonance) analysis. The effects of water occurrences on viscosity, rheology, and stability of CWSs were discussed. The water occurrence had and key effect on CWS performances. Up to 20.63 wt% bound water in lignite CWS impaired the maximum loading. The content and the freedom degree of bulk water in bituminous CWS were higher so bituminous CWS was more flowable but also more unstable. When CWS was sheared, the bulk water adhered to lignite surface would be released, thus lignite CWS was pseudo-plastic. While bituminous CWS was dilatant-plastic because shearing dispersed the coal particles in bituminous CWS, engaging more bulk water to wet the exposed coal surface a fill the new gaps between the particles.
