Abstract:In this work, a novel formaldehyde sensor was constructed based on nanoporous, flower-like, Pb-containing Pd–Au nanoparticles deposited on the cathode in a double-cabin galvanic cell (DCGC) with a Cu plate as the anode, a multiwalled carbon nanotube-modified glassy carbon electrode as the cathode, a 0.1 M HClO4 aqueous solution as the anolyte, and a 3.0 mM PdCl2 + 1.0 mM HAuCl4 + 5.0 mM Pb(ClO4)2 + 0.1 M HClO4 aqueous solution as the catholyte, respectively. Electrochemical studies reveal that the stripping of bulk Cu can induce underpotential deposition (UPD) of Pb during the galvanic replacement reaction (GRR) process, which affects the composition and morphology of Pb-containing Pd–Au nanoparticles. The electrocatalytic activity of Pb-containing nanoparticles toward formaldehyde oxidation was examined in an alkaline solution, and the experimental results showed that formaldehyde mainly caused direct oxidation on the surface of Pb-containing Pd–Au nanoparticles while inhibiting the formation of CO poison to a large degree. The proposed formaldehyde sensor exhibits a linear amperometric response to formaldehyde concentrations from 0.01 mM to 5.0 mM, with a sensitivity of 666 μA mM−1 cm−2, a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.89 μM at triple signal-to-noise, rapid response, high anti-interference ability, and good repeatability.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to develop an efficient, sensitive and highly selective non - enzymatic formaldehyde sensor to achieve rapid and accurate detection of trace formaldehyde in the environment. Specifically, the paper aims to improve the performance of the formaldehyde electrochemical sensor by designing and preparing a new type of electrochemical sensing element - nanoporous, flower - like, lead - containing palladium - gold (Pb - Pd - Au) nanoparticles synthesized by a double - compartment galvanic cell. ### Main problems and challenges 1. **Hazards of formaldehyde and detection requirements** - Formaldehyde is a harmful chemical substance widely used in industrial processes, such as in the manufacture of building materials, detergents, soaps, cosmetics, etc. - The residue of formaldehyde in the environment poses a serious threat to human health. In particular, long - term exposure may lead to chronic poisoning, and the International Agency for Research on Cancer has classified it as a human carcinogen. - Therefore, it is very important to develop rapid and highly sensitive methods to monitor the trace formaldehyde concentration in potentially polluted areas. 2. **Limitations of existing detection methods** - Currently, commonly used formaldehyde detection methods such as spectrophotometry, gas chromatography and high - performance liquid chromatography have problems such as high cost, long time - consumption and complex operation, which limit their application in real - time monitoring. - Electrochemical sensors have attracted much attention because of their low cost, simple operation, high sensitivity and on - site detection advantages. However, existing non - enzymatic electrochemical formaldehyde sensors still face two main problems: - **Low sensitivity**: Slow formaldehyde electro - oxidation kinetics due to interface poisoning. - **Low selectivity**: Oxidation of formaldehyde and other electroactive substances interferes with each other within the same potential range. 3. **Requirement for improving sensor performance** - Improve the catalytic performance of electrode materials, especially enhance electro - catalytic activity through the synergistic effect of multi - component metal nanoparticles. - Control the morphology of nanoparticles to further optimize their catalytic efficiency. ### Paper solution The paper proposes a new type of non - enzymatic formaldehyde sensor based on nanoporous, flower - like, lead - containing palladium - gold (Pb - Pd - Au) nanoparticles synthesized by a double - compartment galvanic cell (DCGC). These nanoparticles exhibit significant catalytic activity for formaldehyde electro - oxidation and can effectively inhibit the formation of CO poisons, thus helping to construct a high - performance formaldehyde sensor. ### Experimental results - **Morphology and composition characterization**: SEM images show that lead - containing Pd - Au nanoparticles form a nanoporous flower - like structure with a diameter of 70 - 500 nm, and EDS analysis shows that these nanoparticles contain Pd, Au and Pb elements. - **Electrochemical behavior**: CV experiments show that lead - containing Pd - Au nanoparticles exhibit excellent electro - catalytic performance for the direct oxidation of formaldehyde in alkaline solution and can inhibit the formation of CO poisons. - **Sensor performance**: The developed formaldehyde sensor exhibits a linear response to formaldehyde concentrations from 0.01 mM to 5.0 mM, with a sensitivity of 666 µA mM⁻¹cm⁻², a detection limit of 0.89 µM (at a signal - to - noise ratio of three), and has a rapid response, high anti - interference ability and good repeatability. In conclusion, through innovative material design and synthesis methods, this paper has successfully solved the key problems of non - enzymatic formaldehyde sensors in terms of sensitivity and selectivity, providing an effective solution for practical applications.
