Abstract:Paraquat (PQ) has high acute toxicity, even at low concentrations. For most people, the main pathway of exposure to PQ is through the diet. Therefore, the development of simple and efficient methods for PQ testing is critical for ensuring food safety. In this study, a new electrochemical detection strategy for paraquat is proposed based on the specific binding of PQ to its nucleic acid aptamer. Firstly, the Zn/Fe bimetallic ZIF derived nanoporous carbon (Zn/Fe-ZIF-NPC) and nickel hexacyanoferrate nanoparticles (NiHCF-NPs) were sequentially modified onto the glassy carbon electrode (GCE). NiHCF-NPs served as the signal probes, while Zn/Fe-ZIF-NPC facilitated electron transfer and effectively enhanced the sensing signal of NiHCF-NPs. Au nanoparticles (AuNPs) were then electrodeposited on the NiHCF-NPs/Zn/Fe-ZIF-NPC/GCE and then the thiolated aptamer was assembled on the AuNPs/NiHCF-NPs/Zn/Fe-ZIF-NPC/GCE via Au-S bonding. When incubated with PQ, the formation of PQ-aptamer complexes delayed the interfacial electron transport reaction of NiHCF-NPs, which caused a decrease in the current signals. As a result, simple and highly sensitive detection of PQ can be readily achieved by detecting the signal changes. A linear range was obtained from 0.001 to 100 mg/L with a detection limit as low as 0.34 μg/L. Due to the recognition specificity of the aptamer to its target molecule, the proposed method has excellent anti-interference ability. The prepared electrochemical aptasensor was successfully used for PQ assay in lettuce, cabbage and agriculture irrigation water samples with recoveries ranging from 96.20% to 104.02%, demonstrating the validity and practicality of the proposed method for PQ detection in real samples.

Abstract:Owing to their large specific surface, favorable electrical conductivity, and excellent electrocatalytic capabilities, two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides have received considerable attention in the field of biosensors. On the basis of these properties, we developed a portable and disposable enzyme-based biosensor for paraoxon detection using a metallic MoS2 nanosheets modified screen-printed electrode (SPE). The exfoliated ultrathin metallic MoS2 nanosheets can accelerate the electron transfer on electrode surface and contribute to the immobilization of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) via the cross-linking of glutaraldehyde. Electrodeposited gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) on SPE were used to immobilize MoS2 nanosheets through the interaction between Au atoms on AuNPs and S atoms on MoS2. Using acetylcholine as the substrate, AChE can catalyze the formation of electroactive thiocholine and further generate the redox current. In the presence of paraoxon, the activity of AChE can be inhibited, making the related electrochemical signals weaken. Under the optimized conditions, this electrochemical biosensor exhibited a favorable linear relationship with the concentration of paraoxon from 1.0 to 1000 μg L-1, with the detection limit of 0.013 μg L-1. Furthermore, this developed biosensor was successfully applied to detect paraoxon in pretreated apple and pakchoi samples, which can provide a reliable method for the rapid analysis of organophosphorus pesticides in agricultural products.

Abstract:An electrochemical sensor (carboxylatopillar[5]arene-coated nitrogen-doped carbon dots, namely CCDs) based on carboxylatopillar[5]arene (CP[5]) functionalized nitrogen-doped carbon dots (N-CDs) has been developed in a facile and economic manner. To improve the performance of this electrochemical sensor in pesticide detection, the optimal solution pH (pH 7) and loading amount of CCDs on the electrode (0.50 mg/mL) have been determined. By virtue of the good conductivity of NCDs and the molecular recognition property of CP[5], CCDs modified glassy carbon electrode, namely CCDs/GCE, shows excellent anti-interference capability, selectivity, stability, and reproducibility in the sensitive detection of paraquat. The peak currents are proportional to the paraquat concentration (from 0.1 μmol/L to 10 μmol/L) with a detection limit of 6.4 nmol/L (S/N = 3), indicating a great potential in pesticide detection. In comparison with the electrochemical sensors that require expensive metal nanoparticles and complex preparation processes, CCDs/GCE exhibits excellent detection capability of paraquat with lower cost and simpler preparation processes.

Abstract:The widespread occurrence of pesticides in surface water, groundwater, soil, and food has received increasing attention towards environmental safety. Paraquat (PQ) is world widely used as a rapid sterilant herbicide and is highly toxic to humans. A simple, rapid, sensitive, and on-site detection method for the water environment to detection of PQ is urgently required. Here, we prepared a zeolite imidazole skeleton-8 (ZIF-8) and para-sulfonylcalix[4]arene (pSC4) coated gold nanoparticles composite (pSC4-AuNPs@ZIF-8) by one-step method. An electrochemical biosensor assay for PQ was established based on pSC4-AuNPs@ZIF-8 modified glassy carbon electrode through host-guest recognition of PQ and pSC4. Under the optimal conditions, recoveries of targets determination results were 92.7%–103% (n = 3), respectively. The quantity PQ detection limit was found to be 0.49 pM. Therefore, the signal amplification strategy based on pSC4-AuNPs@ZIF-8 has potential value in detecting trace pollutants in the water environment.

Abstract:Paper-based sensors or paper-based analytical devices (PADs) have recently emerged as the cost-efficient, and portable, on-site detection tools for various biological and environmental analytes. However, paper-based sensors often suffer from poor selectivity. Here, a single-step paper-based flexible sensor platform has been developed for the on-site detection of paraquat (PQ) pesticide in real samples, utilizing chitosan and citrate-capped silver nanoparticles integrated with a flexible paper. The nanocomposite paper film was thoroughly characterized using UV-visible spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The composite paper platform demonstrated a color change with a reaction time within a few minutes (6-7 min) in the presence of PQ pesticide. The trace level PQ pesticide has been detected with a limit of detection (LOD) of 10 μM and a linear range (LR) of 10-100 μM. The sensor shows 3× more selective signal towards PQ pesticide compared to other similar pesticides. The relative standard deviation (RSD) was found to be 5% for repeatability, 4% for reproducibility, 2% for interference, and 3.5% for real sample analysis, indicating high precision sensing and within the WHO limit of RSD (20%). The present work will open up new avenues for the advancements in flexible paper sensors; cost-effective, portable, on-site sensors, and sustainable device development.

Abstract:The developing of sensor devices for portable and selective detection remains an emergent technology needed for monitoring water contamination. In this work, we developed a flexible and biodegradable sensor based on the polymer poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) mixed with graphite (g), creating (g-PBAT) for the simultaneous detection of paraquat (PQ) and carbofuran (CBF) pesticides. The g-PBAT was used as an electrode support and was modified with poly(allylamine hydrochloride) and carbon nitride dotes by Layer-by-Layer technique. The sensor's performance was evaluated through electrochemical methods using cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and differential pulse voltammetry. The results demonstrated good reproducibility and repeatability with RSD of 14% and 8.8%, respectively. The stability in terms of current signal peak increased by only 8.5% compared to the initial cycle. The limit of detection (LoD) and limit of quantification (LoQ) were 0.63 μM and 2.10 μM for PQ, respectively, with a sensitivity of 3.69E-5 ± 5.94E-7 A cm −2 M −1 , while the CBF had a LoD and LoQ of 7.14 μM and 23.8 μM, respectively, with a sensitivity of 2.51E-7 ± 2.09E-8 A cm −2 M −1 . Additionally, the recovery methodology for the real sample showed ranges from 89.3% to 105.0% for PQ, and 92.1% to 105.9% for CBF, indicating that the sensor exhibits good sensitivity and stable RSD, ranging from 4% to 7.5%.

Abstract:Paraquat (PQ) is a highly toxic herbicide that has been prohibited in almost 70 countries, but remains in use worldwide. Thus, routine on-site PQ monitoring is a key mechanism to ensure safety and efficiently enforce regulations. Herein, a label-free portable electrochemical aptasensor for the detection of PQ was developed by utilizing aptamer designed to specifically recognize PQ. The aptasensor employs square-wave voltammetry (SWV) to quantify PQ binding on the aptamer-functionalized electrode surface by tracking the downstream oxygen reduction reaction. It provided a detection range spanning from 0.01 to 100.0 μg mL − 1 PQ with a limit of detection (LOD) of 8.9 ng mL − 1 . Validation against spiked tap water, pomegranate juice, and orange juice revealed recovery rate performances of 75 %–130 %. The aptasensor demonstrates promising feasibility for PQ detection in real-world applications, offering remarkable portability and operational simplicity. Notably, it can operate without supplementary redox agents, requiring only sample incubation and subsequent washing steps.

Abstract:Paraquat (PQ) pollutions are ultra-toxic to human beings and hard to be decomposed in the environment, thus requiring an on-site detection strategy. Herein, we developed a robust and rapid PQ sensing strategy based on the surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) technique. A hybrid SERS substrate was prepared by grafting the Au@Ag core-shell nanoparticles (NPs) on the Au film over slightly etched nanoparticles (Au FOSEN). Hotspots were engineered at the junctions as indicated by the finite difference time domain calculation. SERS performance of the hybrid substrate was explored using p-ATP as the Raman probe. The hybrid substrate gives higher enhancement factor comparing to either the Au FOSEN substrate or the Au@Ag core-shell NPs, and exhibits excellent reproducibility, homogeneity and stability. The proposed SERS substrates were prepared in batches for the practical PQ sensing. The total analysis time for a single sample, including the pre-treatment and measurement, was less than 5min with a PQ detection limit of 10nM. Peak intensities of the SERS signal were plotted as a function of the PQ concentrations to calibrate the sensitivity by fitting the Hill's equation. The plotted calibration curve showed a good log-log linearity with the coefficient of determination of 0.98. The selectivity of the sensing proposal was based on the "finger print" Raman spectra of the analyte. The proposed substrate exhibited good recovery when it applied to real water samples, including lab tap water, bottled water, and commercially obtained apple juice and grape juice. This SERS-based PQ detection method is simple, rapid, sensitive and selective, which shows great potential in pesticide residue and additives abuse monitoring.

Abstract:A solution-based approach of chemical co-reduction of graphene oxide (GO) and HAuCl4 was used to prepare graphene/Au nanocomposite (GR/Au). The resulting hybrid material was characterized by scanning electron microscope and transmission electron microscope, which demonstrated that Au nanoparticles could been uniformly deposited on the GR sheets. Then, nanocomposite (GR/Au/ILs) of ionic liquids (ILs), GR and Au nanoparticles (NPs) were successfully prepared. Such a nanostructured composite greatly facilitated electron-transfer process and the sensing behavior for PQ detection, leading to remarkably improved sensitivity. The GR/Au/ILs modified glassy carbon electrode showed a broad linear range from 2.0 x 10(-9) mol L-1 to 1.0 x 10(-7) mol L-1, with a detection limit of 7.3 x 10(-10) mol L-1 (S/N = 3) for PQ, along with good reproducibility and stability. At the same time, this sensor could be applied to the determination of PQ in real samples with satisfactory results.

Abstract:3D nanocake-like Au-MXene and Au pallet (Au-MXene/AuP) nanocomposite-modified screen-printed carbon electrodes (SPCEs) were utilized to construct an ultrasensitive label-free electrochemical aptasensor through a self-assembly procedure for trace paraquat (PQ) residue detection. Benefiting from the excellent electrochemical (EC) performances (e.g., high conductivity and large surface area) of Au-MXene nanocomposites and AuP substrate, the developed Apt/Au-MXene/AuP/SPCE-based EC aptasensor displayed excellent specificity and anti-interference ability, good repeatability, and stability. A linear relationship between the log value of the change in current intensity [lg (ΔI)] and the log value of the concentration of PQ [lg (CPQ)] was obtained in the range 0.05-1000 ng/mL. The limit of detection was 0.028 ng/mL, and the sensitivity was 255.5 μA/(μM·cm2). Practical applications in malt and mint samples confirmed the accuracy of the EC aptasensor in complex matrices for PQ detection, providing a universal analytical tool for other trace pesticides in different food samples by simply replacing the corresponding aptamers.

Abstract:Paraquat (PQ) as a widely used herbicide has high toxicity. Therefore, it calls for development of sensitive analytic methods to monitor the residue of PQ in environment. In this work, a photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensing strategy via preparation of the photocathode of ITO/Au/Cu2O is proposed. The introduction of Au film in the PEC system significantly improves the photoelectric property of Cu2O, which may be attributed to the enhanced light utilization and the inhibited self-photoreduction of Cu2O. As expected, under the visible light illumination, the fabricated ITO/Au/Cu2O photocathode shows excellent sensitivity in determination of trace paraquat. The quantitative linear range is from 10-9 to 10-5 mol L-1 and the limit of detection (2.93 × 10-10 mol L-1) could be reached. For detection of real samples, the ITO/Au/Cu2O photocathode-based PEC sensor demonstrates interference-free, detection reproducibility and acceptable recoveries. This study highlights the heterostructure advantage of metal–semiconductor for promoting the PEC sensing application.

Abstract:In view of the lethal toxicity of paraquat (PQ) on human health, herein, a simple indicator displacement assay (IDA) based on an azo-modified calixarene host (azoCX[4]) and a fluorophore guest (p-DPD) were elaborately constructed for PQ detection in environmental water samples and plant surfaces. The fluorescent signal of p-DPD in the probe can be quenched by azoCX[4] through a photon-induced electron transfer process and recovered upon the addition of PQ within 10 s. The detection range of the p-DPD@azoCX[4] probe was calculated to be 0.35-8 μM in the Tris-HCl buffer solutions (pH = 7.4). Moreover, this probe exhibited excellent detection selectivity toward PQ over five herbicides (glyphosate, bispyribac, atrazine, ametryn, and bensulfuron methyl), together with anti-interference abilities in the presence of inorganic ions (K+, Na+, Zn2+, Ni2+, Li+, F-, Cl-, Br-, CO32-, HCO3-, and NO3-) and amino acids (Asp, Arg, Glu, Ala, and Cys). Particularly, the probe was successfully used to detect PQ in real water samples with acceptable accuracy and showed potential applications for on-site detection with paper-based test strips and on the leaf surface. We believe that this simplified IDA-based probe provided an effective detecting tool for PQ, and the design strategy would guide the further development of new IDA sensing systems.
Facile Synthesis of Glutathione-capped CdS Quantum Dots as a Fluorescence Sensor for Rapid Detection and Quantification of Paraquat

Abstract:This paper describes a convenient and rapid fluorescence sensor for determination of paraquat (PA) based on glutathione-capped CdS quantum dots (QDs). The methodology enabled the use of a simple synthesis procedure for water solubilization of CdS QDs via a fast route using glutathione as a capping agent within 15 min. The resulting water-soluble QDs exhibit a strong fluorescence emission at 536 nm with high and reproducible photostability. PA is an important class of electron acceptors for QDs. Thus, the fluorescence intensity of the glutathione-capped CdS QDs probe could be dramatically quenched by PA due to the electron transfer mechanism. The fluorescence intensity of the CdS QDs system was proportional to PA concentration in the range of 0.025 to 1.5 μg mL−1, with a detection limit of 0.01 μg mL−1. The time of analysis sample, including preparation of QDs and fluorescent measurement for PA, was only 20 min. Most of the potentially coexisting substances did not interfere with the PA-induced quenching effect except diquat. Furthermore, the analytical applicability of the proposed method was demonstrated by analyzing PA in water, rice and cabbage samples, and the recoveries were between 86 and 105% which satisfied the requirement of detection for PA. These results showed that the proposed method was simple in design and fast in operation, and could be used as a sensitive tool for detecting PA in environmental and agricultural samples.

Abstract:<span>This study aimed to develop an aptasensor for paraquat detection by gold nanoparticles. The specific aptamer for paraquat was selected by using the SELEX process via capillary electrophoresis. Sixty-three aptamer candidates were amplified by asymmetric PCR and screened for paraquat binding using gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). Aggregation of AuNPs was specifically induced by desorption of paraquat binding aptamers from the surface of AuNPs as a result of aptamer–target interaction leading to the color change from red to purple. Aptamer 77F with the following sequence: 5′-AGGCTTACACCTGAAAAGCGGCTTAATTTACACTACTGTAT-3′ was selected as a highly specific aptamer for paraquat. The detection limit of paraquat was 0.267 µg/mL by colorimetry and 1.573 µg/mL by the quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) technique. This aptamer showed specificity for paraquat by colorimetry. Dimethyl phophite, diethyl phophite and O,O diethyl thiophosphate potassium salt did not react by colorimetry but, exhibited a weak nonspecific reaction by QCM. This is first time that an aptasensor was used for detection of paraquat based on QCM. However, the aptasensor based on the colorimetric method simply uses a generation of a signal that can be detected by the naked eye. This technique is rapid, low cost easy to use and suitable for on-site detection of herbicide residue.</span>

The modified electrode was fabricated by drop casting of the GO-AuNPs, followed by electropolymerization of 3-aminobenzoic acid to achieve SPCE/GO-AuNPs/P3ABA. The morphology and microstructural characteristics of the modified electrodes were revealed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) for each step of modification. The composite GO-AuNPs can provide high surface area and enhance electroconductivity of the electrode. In addition, the presence of negatively charged P3ABA notably improved PQ adsorption and electron transfer rate, which stimulate redox reaction on the modified electrode, thus improving the sensitivity of PQ analysis. The SPCE/GO-AuNPs/P3ABA offered a wide linear range of PQ determination (10-9-10-4 mol/L) and low limit of detection (LOD) of 0.45 × 10-9 mol/L or 0.116 µg/L, which is far below international safety regulations. The modified electrode showed minimum interference effect with percent recovery ranging from 96.5% to 116.1% after addition of other herbicides, pesticides, metal ions, and additives. The stability of the SPCE/GO-AuNPs/P3ABA was evaluated, and the results indicated negligible changes in the detection signal over 9 weeks. Moreover, this modified electrode was successfully implemented for PQ analysis in both natural and tapped water with high accuracy.

Abstract:Herein, we demonstrate a sensitive and rapid electrochemical method for the detection of paraquat (PQ) using a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) modified with vertically ordered mesoporous silica films (VMSF) and a nanocarbon composite. The three-dimensional graphene-carbon nanotube (3DG-CNT) nanocarbon composite has a 3D network structure, a large electroactive area and oxygen-containing groups, promoting electron transfer between PQ and the underlying electrode and providing a suitable microenvironment for the stable growth of VMSF. This VMSF/3DG-CNT nanocomposite film could be prepared on the GCE’s surface by a two-step electrochemical method with good controllability and convenience. Owing to the synergistic effect of the electrocatalytic ability of 3DG-CNT and the electrostatically enriched capacity of VMSF, the proposed VMSF/3DG-CNT/GCE has superior analytical sensitivity compared with the bare GCE. Furthermore, VMSF has excellent anti-fouling ability that makes the fabricated sensor exhibit satisfactory performance for direct analysis of PQ in environmental water samples.

Abstract:An electrochemical device using copper-based metalorganic franmeworks (MOF) associated with reduced graphene oxide to improve the charge transfer, stability, and adherence of the structures on the surface of the electrodes was developed. The syntheses of these materials were confirmed using scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared and Raman spectroscopy. For the first time, this type of sensor was applied to a systematic study to understand the action mechanism of MOFs and reduced graphene oxide in the electrochemical detection of paraquat pesticide. Under optimized conditions, paraquat was detected in standard solutions by differential pulse voltammetry (− 0.8 to − 0.3 V vs Ag/AgCl), achieving a linear response range between 0.30 and 5.00 μmol L −1 . The limits of detection and quantification were 50.0 nmol L −1 and 150.0 nmol L −1 , respectively. We assessed the accuracy of the proposed device to determine paraquat in water and human blood serum samples by recovery study, obtaining recovery values ranging from 98 to 104%. Furthermore, the selectivity of the proposed electrode for paraquat detection was evaluated against various interferences, demonstrating their promising application in environmental analysis.

Abstract:Boron/nitrogen-co-doped carbon (BCN) nanosheets decorated with Fe2O3 nanocrystals (Fe2O3–BCN) were cast on a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) and applied as an electrochemical sensor to effectively detect paraquat (PQ), a toxic herbicide, in aqueous environments. A linear experiment performed using square wave voltammetry (SWV) under optimized experimental conditions produced a decent linear relationship and a low detection limit (LOD) of 2.74 nmol/L (S/N = 3). Repeatability, reproducibility, stability, and interference experiments confirmed that the Fe2O3–BCN/GCE system exhibited decent electrochemical sensing performance for PQ molecules. Notably, the designed sensor showed high selectivity and a decent linear relationship with PQ concentration in natural water samples. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study on the preparation of Fe2O3–BCN nanosheets for PQ detection. The proposed sensor can be employed as an effective alternative tool for distinguishing and processing PQ.
