Abstract:Business literature identifies trust as a key factor in promoting electronic interfirm cooperation (EIC). We believe, however, that such findings cannot be generalized to all forms of trust nor to all types of EIC. Specifically, we propose that a high presence of a certain form of trust called social trust may actually impede EIC when it is supported by proprietary-standard interorganizational systems (proprietary-IOS). Instead, the presence of high social trust will encourage companies to adopt EIC supported by open-standard IOS (open-IOS).

Abstract:This study examines the role of social trust in financial inclusion around the world, using financial inclusion measures from Global Findex database and measure of trust from the World Values Survey. After controlling for individual characteristics, and country level differences in institutions and financial markets, social trust remains as a significant and positive determinant for various aspects of financial inclusion. Trust is further found to supplement for weak formal institution and lower level of education. The role of limited form of trust is also examined in the study.

Abstract:State-controlled listed firms in China receive preferential treatment when borrowing from commercial banks; in contrast, private controlled firms rely on informal finance and on trade credit. We argue for and find evidence that private firms located in higher social trust regions use more trade credit from suppliers, extend more trade credit to customers, and collect receivables and pay payables more quickly. These findings are enhanced for firms located in provinces with weak protection of property rights. Our results are robust to different measures of social trust, legal environment, and endogeneity. Overall, our results show that social trust helps private firms overcome institutional difficulties in financing their activities.

Abstract:Recent research has demonstrated the important role of social trust in economic growth. As a form of informal institution, social trust and formal institution are inextricable and intrinsically related. This article aims to investigate the relationship between social trust and institution, and their combined effects on economic growth. In an empirical investigation of cross-provincial data in the period 2001-2009 in China, our estimates suggest that the increase in social trust significantly promotes economic growth. The improvement of formal institution is also beneficial to economic growth. The effect of social trust on economic growth depends on the institution level, and this effect weakens with institutional strength.

Abstract:Social trust helps to reduce information asymmetry and agency conflicts between insiders and investors, and thus alleviates the pressure on firms to pay cash dividends. Consistent with this view, we find that Chinese firms in low-trust regions make higher dividend payouts than those in high-trust regions. The negative effect of trust is more pronounced in firms with lower information transparency and weaker corporate governance. We additionally find a lower market reaction to dividend announcements for firms in high-trust areas, and moreover that the role of social trust is more important for firms that are lacking in political connections and located in areas with weak institutions. Our results are robust to alternative measures of social trust and dividends and the use of the instrumental variable approach to alleviate endogeneity concerns. Overall, the findings highlight the important role of social trust in corporate governance and corporate dividend policy, along with its ability to substitute for formal institutions.

Abstract:Combining rich and novel datasets from China, we investigate how city-level cultural fractionalization affects social trust and the efficiency of financial intermediation. Using an instrumental variable approach, we find that cultural fractionalization significantly lowers the efficiency of financial intermediation. Further individual-level and firm-level evidence supports the social capital channel, showing that the level of social trust is lower in cities with larger cultural fractionalization. Our theoretical and empirical analyses both suggest that social trust rooted in local cultures plays a monitoring role in the financing process, which helps reduce the efficiency loss arising from moral hazard and information asymmetry.
Social Trust and Open Innovation in an Informal Economy: The Emergence of Shenzhen Mobile Phone Industry

Abstract:This study examines how social trust facilitates firms’ collaborative efficiency in an informal economy. We extend the open innovation theory to explain the straightforward role of social trust in the Shenzhen mobile phone industry. This single case study yields two principal findings. First, social trust fosters the efficient integration of value chains for mobile phone development. Four types of informal entrepreneurs with high social trust built on homogenous sanctioned ethnic groups (i.e., Fujian, Hunan, Chaoshan, and Wenzhou) collaboratively conform to the chip vendors, independent design houses, integrators, manufacturers and channel retailers in the Shenzhen mobile phone industry. These four groups of informal entrepreneurs achieve ethnic legitimacy by organizing the value chains with mobile feature phones built on Shenzhen mobile phone modes. Second, social trust among the four sanctioned ethnic groups is a critical determinant for shortening the time-to-market of new products and catalyzes product specialization to effectively respond to market needs in the Shenzhen mobile phone industry. Finally, we discuss the implications of our findings for research on social trust and open innovation in informal institutions.

Abstract:Social trust is the result and reflection of repeated games between individuals. Is social trust capable of optimizing enterprises' financing modes? The following results are obtained. (1) The greater the regional social trust level, the lower the cost of equity. (2) Social trust plays a larger role in lowering the cost of equity in state-owned enterprises and enterprises located in regions with strong rule of law. By improving accounting information quality, social trust can reduce investor information risk, thus lowering equity costs.

Abstract:A growing number of studies in the past two decades suggest that social trust matters for financing. However, a few recent studies also indicate that social trust may result in systemic biases and opportunistic behavior. First, we show that trust is important for several types of entrepreneurial financing. Second, our results reveal that trust plays an essential role in start-up financing in places with low access to information, low disclosures, and weaker legal protection. However, in countries with stronger legal protections, the effect of trust is either insignificant or negative. Hence, trust takes on the role of a substitute and may not necessarily bring benefits when strong formal institutions are present.

Abstract:This paper aims to understand the determinants of inter-personal trust.Social interaction, place identity and norms are regarded as three important influencing factors which have different impacts on different kinds of inter-personal trust.The analyses of Shanghai survey data indicate that social interaction and trust in neighbors,place identity and trust in Shanghainese,norms and trust in strangers have positive relations.In addition,participating in associations has significant relations with trust in Shanghainese and strangers.This research highlights the importance of differentiating different types of trust and examining their determinants respectively.

Abstract:This paper delves into the role of political rights in shaping financial inclusion. Despite the acknowledged significance of political institutions in influencing financial systems, there remains limited understanding of the economic origins of the impact of political institutions on financial inclusion. Utilizing data from the 2021 Global Findex database, the study finds that weak political rights significantly reduce the likelihood of individuals possessing financial accounts and using digital financial services. Robustness tests employing an instrumental variable and the difference-in-differences framework confirm that inadequate political rights have a detrimental effect on financial inclusion. By exploring the reasons for financial exclusion and moderating factors, this study provides supportive evidence for the mechanisms of eroded social trust and political rent-seeking as the key constraints that hinder inclusiveness in providing mainstream financial products and services.

Abstract:Facilitating land transfers and contract standardization is crucial for optimizing farmland use and achieving high-quality agricultural development following the round of confirmation, registration, and certification of contracted rural land management rights by the government. Social trust is crucial for cracking the growth dilemma of land transfer, and the impact of farmers' trust on land transfer may also change after the round of land titling. This study aims to examine the impact of social trust on farm households' land transfer decisions and the formalization of land transfer contracts within the context of the new round of land titling in China, using models such as IV-Probit, Heckprobit, and conditional mixed process (CMP), with survey data from 2600 Chinese farmers in 2020–2021. The results show that increased social trust significantly enhances both land transfer and contract formalization, and these results remain robust after addressing potential endogeneity. Further analysis reveals that while interpersonal trust promotes land transfer, institutional trust plays a more pivotal role in the formalization of contracts. The results underscore the importance of strengthening grassroots governance to foster institutional trust, enhance institutional reliability, and support the regulated growth of the land transfer market.

Abstract:Based mainly on a Hong Kong-wide survey carried out in March-April 2021, while also drawing on a round of stakeholder interviews from July 2020 to December 2021, the article interprets the linked phenomena of trust and the smart city in the specific context of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. In the main body of the article, four angles are used to understand facets of trust-smart city relations, centred on characteristic trust, trust and technology, the role of intermediaries, and trust in government. The main findings of the survey centre around the data trust paradox (of high support for technology in a low-trust environment), the social impact of trust and mistrust (strongly correlated with age and political affiliation), and trust in the smart city as a weathervane of trust in government. Factors such as a digitally literate population, a decades-long investment in technology, and a substantial record of delivery provide solid reasons to believe that a strategic-technical narrative on the smart city might succeed where others have failed to convince.

Trust Premium: Evidence from the Second-Hand Housing Market in China

Abstract:Trust, as an important social capital and informal institution, has profoundly affected transaction behaviors in Chinese second-hand housing market. Based on the second-hand housing transactions of 17 cities from Lianjia database, this paper matches the birthplaces of traders with CESS2000 to measure the trust degree for each transaction, and then investigates the impact of trust degree on the bargaining power during the negotiations. The empirical results show that there is a significant positive relationship between trust degree and negotiation rate, and trust premium is more captured by buyers. Moreover, ‘youth capital’ emphasizes the impact of trust and local advantage has a substitution effect of trust. Furthermore, the impact of trust exists the gender difference, and is more significant for male traders than female traders. Our paper provides empirical evidence on the trust premium in housing transactions and supports the establishment of social credit system. The governments can reduce transaction friction and transaction costs by establishing an adequate formal institution, such as the personal credit database.

Abstract:Social trust is an important issue in the study of social capital. The level of social trust is closely related to social stability and social harmony. This paper studies the dynamic evolution of social trust during the transforming period in Chinese society by using the data of 12 nationwide questionnaire surveys from 1990 to 2010. The results of the study show that compared with other countries, the stock of social trust maintains at a high level in Chinese society. Furthermore, this paper also analyzes the reasons for the high stock of social trust. It concludes that older people offer more trust to society than younger ones, and those with higher education level offer more trust to society than those with lower education level.
Social Trust and Bank Loan Financing: Evidence from China

Abstract:Using a sample of non‐state‐owned enterprises (NSOEs) in China, we investigate the impact of social trust on firms' access to bank loan financing. We find that privately controlled firms in trust‐intensive regions are more likely to obtain loans from banks than those in regions with a lower level of social trust. The positive effect of trust on access to bank loans is more pronounced for firms that have no political connections, firms that are located in regions with poor legal environments, and firms that hire less reputable auditors. We also examine the channels through which social trust promotes bank finance. The results show that firms in trust‐intensive regions have a lower likelihood of default and higher financial reporting quality. Finally, we find that loans to NSOEs in trust‐intensive regions are associated with fewer collateral requirements, longer maturity, and lower interest rate spread. Overall, these findings suggest that social trust alleviates lenders' concerns regarding moral hazard and plays an important role when NSOEs raise capital from the bank loan market.
Perching Birds or Scattered Streams: a Study of How Trust Affects Civic Engagement among University Students in Contemporary China

Abstract:This article explores how trust affects the nature and characteristics of civic engagement among university students in contemporary China. We draw upon empirical evidence from in-depth individual interviews involving 68 students born between 1993 and 1999. Four different types of civic activities, including associational membership with the Chinese Communist Party as well as self-organised town-fellowship associations, volunteering and digital activism, are analysed in relation to bridging, bonding and/or obligatory relationships. Generalised trust amongst university students seems to be low, but they do exhibit unquestioned trust in the State. The organisations with which they associate either are top-down through the Communist Party, which is ideologically narrow and socially distant among the members, or promote geographical origin-based bonding rather than bridging relationships. Our findings add new depth to our understanding of the relationships between the dominant modalities of trust and the typical form of civic participation in Chinese universities. We also highlight the effects of increasing meritocratic competition and stress on performativity on the civic attitudes and behaviour of students. We argue that the hybrid of neoliberal individualism and Confucianism seems to be a perfect match to reconcile the absence of civic traditions and to validate civic consciousness among university youth.
