Abstract:Salinity is a brutal threat to sustainability of crop production and exhibits injurious effect on major plant processes including protein synthesis, cell division and photosynthetic activity. Germination and early growth of plants are most susceptible to salinity effect in comparison to other growth stages. In this context, the seed emergence and early vegetative growth of flowers needs to be tested properly. The pot based study was conducted in Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with three replicates at Sindh Agriculture University Tandojam. The goal of this investigation was to explore the performance of petunia plants to salt stress environment at early growth stage. Two petunia varieties (V1= Prism blue, V2= Hala lop petunia rose) were evaluated against six levels of salt stress (T1 = Canal irrigation water [Control], T2 = 3 dS m-1, T3 = 5 dS m-1, T4 = 7 dS m-1, T5 = 9 dS m-1, T6 = 11 dS m-1).The results showed that there was an inverse effect of salt stress on all the traits examined and with each increased level of salinity in irrigation water; the values of petunia plant traits were significantly decreased. The petunia grown in pots given only canal water (control) revealed better performance for germination and growth attributes. It was further noted that that salt stress up to 3 dS m-1 level was generally tolerated by petunia. Among petunia varieties, Hala lop petunia rose performance was better and showed relative tolerance to salt stress over Prism blue, but in most cases the differences were insignificant (P>0.05).
Morpho-Physiological and Transcriptome Changes in Tomato Anthers of Different Developmental Stages under Drought Stress.

Abstract:Drought limits the growth and productivity of plants. Reproductive development is sensitive to drought but the underlying physiological and molecular mechanisms remain unclear in tomatoes. Here, we investigated the effect of drought on tomato floral development using morpho-physiological and transcriptome analyses. Drought-induced male sterility through abnormal anther development includes pollen abortion, inadequate pollen starch accumulation and anther indehiscence which caused floral bud and opened flower abortions and reduced fruit set/yield. Under drought stress (DS), pollen mother cell to meiotic (PMC-MEI) anthers survived whereas tetrad to vacuolated uninucleate microspore (TED-VUM) anthers aborted. PMC-MEI anthers had lower ABA increase, reduced IAA and elevated sugar contents under DS relative to well-watered tomato plants. However, TED-VUM anthers had higher ABA increase and IAA levels, and lower accumulation of soluble sugars, indicating abnormal carbohydrate and hormone metabolisms when exposed to drought-stress conditions. Moreover, RNA-Seq analysis identified altogether >15,000 differentially expressed genes that were assigned to multiple pathways, suggesting that tomato anthers utilize complicated mechanisms to cope with drought. In particular, we found that tapetum development and ABA homeostasis genes were drought-induced while sugar utilization and IAA metabolic genes were drought-repressed in PMC-MEI anthers. Our results suggest an important role of phytohormones metabolisms in anther development under DS and provide novel insight into the molecular mechanism underlying drought resistance in tomatoes.
Effects of Maternal Environment on Seed Germination and Seedling Vigor of Petunia × hybrida under Different Abiotic Stresses

Abstract:Seed germination and seedling vigor can be affected by environmental cues experienced by the mother plant. However, information about how the maternal environment affects seed quality is scarce in ornamental plants. This study aimed to investigate the effects of two different maternal environments on the seed germination and seedling vigor of Petunia × hybrida under a variety of abiotic stresses. Petunia mother plants were grown in either a greenhouse during the summer months or an indoor controlled-temperature-and-light environment. Collected seeds were subjected to external stressors, including polyethylene glycol (PEG), sodium chloride (NaCl), high temperature, and abscisic acid (ABA), to determine seed germination percentage and seedling vigor. Results indicated that seeds harvested from the mother plants grown in a controlled environment germinated better than seeds harvested from the mother plants grown in the greenhouse when suboptimal germination conditions were applied. Additionally, the seedlings from the controlled maternal environment performed better in both ABA and salinity stress tests than the greenhouse seedlings. Interestingly, the greenhouse seedlings displayed less reactive oxygen species (ROS) damage and lower electrolyte leakage than the controlled environment seedlings under dehydration stress. The difference in germination and seedling vigor of seeds from the two different maternal environments might be due to the epigenetic memory inherited from the mother plants. This study highlighted the strong impact of the maternal environment on seed germination and seedling vigor in Petunia and may assist in high-quality seed production in ornamental plants.

Abstract:Ethylene plays a critical signaling role in the abiotic stress tolerance mechanism. However, the role of ethylene in regulating abiotic stress tolerance in petunia has not been well-investigated, and the underlying molecular mechanism by which ethylene regulates abiotic stress tolerance is still unknown. Therefore, we examined the involvement of ethylene in salt and drought stress tolerance of petunia using the petunia wild type cv. “Merage Rose” and the ethylene biosynthesis genes ( PhACO1 and PhACO3 )-edited mutants ( phaco1 and phaco3 ). Here, we discovered that editing Ph ACO 1 and PhACO3 reduced ethylene production in the mutants, and mutants were more sensitive to salt and drought stress than the wild type (WT). This was proven by the better outcomes of plant growth and physiological parameters and ion homeostasis in WT over the mutants. Molecular analysis revealed that the expression levels of the genes associated with antioxidant, proline synthesis, ABA synthesis and signaling, and ethylene signaling differed significantly between the WT and mutants, indicating the role of ethylene in the transcriptional regulation of the genes associated with abiotic stress tolerance. This study highlights the involvement of ethylene in abiotic stress adaptation and provides a physiological and molecular understanding of the role of ethylene in abiotic stress response in petunia. Furthermore, the finding alerts researchers to consider the negative effects of ethylene reduction on abiotic stress tolerance when editing the ethylene biosynthesis genes to improve the postharvest quality of horticultural crops.

Abstract:Drought dramatically affects plant growth and crop yield, but previous studies primarily examined responses to drought during vegetative development. Here, to study responses to drought during reproductive development, we grew Arabidopsis thaliana plants with limited water, under conditions that allowed the plants to initiate and complete reproduction. Drought treatment from just after the onset of flowering to seed maturation caused an early arrest of floral development and sterility. After acclimation, plants showed reduced fertility that persisted throughout reproductive development. Floral defects included abnormal anther development, lower pollen viability, reduced filament elongation, ovule abortion, and failure of flowers to open. Drought also caused differential expression of 4153 genes, including flowering time genes FLOWERING LOCUS T, SUPPRESSOR OF OVEREXPRESSION OF CO1, and LEAFY, genes regulating anther and pistil development, and stress-related transcription factors. Mutant phenotypes of hypersensitivity to drought and fewer differentially expressed genes suggest that DEHYDRATION RESPONSE ELEMENT B1A may have an important function in drought response in flowers. A more severe filament elongation defect under drought in myb21 plants demonstrated that appropriate stamen development requires MYB DOMAIN PROTEIN 21 under drought conditions. Our study reveals a regulatory cascade in reproductive responses and acclimation under drought.
Physiological Responses of Rhododendron ovatum to Drought Stress during Its Seed Germination Stage

Abstract:In order to study the physiological and biochemical response mechanism of Rhododendron ova?tum to drought stress during its seed germination stage,the dynamics of germination rate,antioxidant enzyme activities,organic osmoregulation substances,malondialdehyde ( MDA) and relative permeability of cell mem?brane were analyzed under drought stress simulated by polyethylene glycol (PEG) ?6000.The results showed that germination rate of R.ovatum was significantly decreased and inhibited when PEG stress concentration was≥15%.At 5%-20% PEG stress concentration,SOD and CAT activities were increased when PEG was≤15%but decreased when PEG was> 15%,POD activity was continuously increased with the increase of drought stress degree.In comparison with no stress (CK) and light drought stress,the contents of proline,soluble sugar and MDA and relative permeability of cell membrane increased significantly. The results indicated that seed germination of R.ovatum was tolerant to drought in some degree under light water stress.The seed germination of R.ovatum was inhibited by moderate water stress (15% PEG),but the seeds could adapt to drought stress by changing their own physiological conditions.

Abstract:Premise of the Study: Impatiens is a commonly seen garden flower, renowned for its strong adaptability and long history of cultivation. However, seldom has any research touched on its physiological resistance mechanism. In this experiment, the impatiens is selected from those which experienced aerospace mutation and thereafter 12 years of cultivation and breeding. Therefore, it is superior to the non-mutagenized impatiens in terms of drought resistance and demonstrates tremendous differences from the normal impatiens in physiology, which intrigues scholars to search for the underlying reasons . Methods: By reference to Impatiens balsamina L,this experiment uses mutagenized impatiens seeds, processed by PEG-6000 in different solution concentration, to measure the germination rate of impatiens, its relative enzymatic activity and expression differences between gene SoS2 and gene RD29b in the drought lower reaches. Key results: Under simulated drought stress, there is no distinct difference between the mutagenized impatiens and the normal impatiens in terms of germination rate. But by measuring the root tillers and the length, the relative enzymatic activity, MDA, and the expression differences between gene SoS2 and gene RD29b in the drought lower reaches, it is verified that the mutagenized impatiens has more advantages than the normal impatiens, and it Can further cultivate become drought resistance varieties impatiens. Conclusions: In this experiment,which is a positive mutation, the mutagenized impatiens improves drought resistance through radiative mutation. The so obtained impatiens is more pleasing in sight in terms of color and shape and has higher application value in garden virescence.

Abstract:Effects of low phosphorus(P) stress on iron(Fe),manganese(Mn),calcium(Ca) and magnesium(Mg) uptake in watermelon seedlings of seven cultivars were studied in this paper by the method of plant solution culture.It has been demonstrated that low P stress can affect the Fe,Mn,Ca and Mg uptake in the seven watermelon cultivars.Low P stress can reduce Fe uptake of watermelon,but the effects of low P stress on Mn,Ca and Mg uptake were different among cultivars.There were significant and positive correlation between Ca and Mg uptake under low P stress.The differences of Fe,Mn,Ca and Mg content among the seven cultivars were studied with the relative content of elements as screening parameters.Our results showed that Zaojia and Zaochunhongyu were identified as the Fe high efficient uptake genotypes,Zaojia was identified as the Mn high efficient uptake genotype,Lifang was identified as the Ca and Mg high efficient uptake genotype under low P stress.
Overexpression of acdS in petunia reduces ethylene production and improves tolerance to heat stress

Abstract:We observed that overexpression of acdS, isolated from plant growth‐promoting bacteria, in petunia reduced heat stress‐induced ethylene production, resulting in lower ROS levels, which alleviated the deleterious effects of ethylene on plant growth and improved heat stress tolerance. Petunia hybrida, widely grown as a bedding plant, has reduced growth and flower quality at temperatures above 30 °C (heat stress), primarily due to heat stress‐induced ethylene (ET) production. The gene acdS encodes the 1‐aminocyclopropane‐1‐carboxylate (ACC) deaminase (ACCD) enzyme, which is known for its role in reducing ET production by breaking down the ET precursor, ACC, in plant tissues. This study investigated the impact of heat stress on both 'Mirage Rose' WT petunia and its acdS‐overexpressing transgenic lines. Heat stress‐induced growth inhibition was observed in WT plants but not in transgenic plants. The increased stress tolerance of transgenic plants over WT plants was associated with lower ET production, ROS accumulation, higher SPAD values, water content, and relative water content. Furthermore, higher sensitivity of the WT to heat stress than the transgenic plants was confirmed by analysing ET signalling genes, heat shock transcription factor genes, and antioxidant‐ and proline‐related genes, more strongly induced in WT than in transgenic plants. Overall, this study suggests the potential application of acdS overexpression in other floriculture plants as a viable strategy for developing heat stress‐tolerant varieties. This approach holds promise for advancing the floricultural industry by overcoming challenges related to heat‐induced growth inhibition and loss of flower quality.

Genome-Wide Analysis of UGT Genes in Petunia and Identification of PhUGT51 Involved in the Regulation of Salt Resistance

Abstract:UDP-glycosyltransferase (UGT) plays an essential role in regulating the synthesis of hormones and secondary metabolites in plants. In this study, 129 members of the Petunia UGT family were identified and classified into 16 groups (A-P) based on phylogenetic analysis. The same subgroups have conserved motif compositions and intron/exon arrangement. In the promoters of the Petunia UGT genes, several cis-elements associated with plant hormones, growth and development, and abiotic stress have been discovered. Their expression profiles in five tissues were revealed by tissue expression based on RNA-seq data. Subcellular localization analysis showed that PhUGT51 was located in the nucleus and cell membrane. Salt stress caused an increase in the expression level of PhUGT51, but the expression level remained stable with the growth over time. In addition, the overexpression of PhUGT51 caused a significant increase in salt resistance. Our study systematically analyses the UGT gene family in Petunia for the first time and provides some valuable clues for the further functional studies of UGT genes.
A Differential Phytohormone Profile in the Aerial Part and Roots as a Response to Water Stress Underlying Morphophysiological and Biochemical Changes in Two Inbred Sunflower Lines at Early Growth Stage

Abstract:Water stress is a primary abiotic stress that produces several morphological, physiological, biochemical and molecular alterations, which affect crop productivity. The aim of the present study was to evaluate and compare morphophysiological and biochemical characteristics and the hormone profiles of two sunflower inbred lines (C803 and R461-4) in response to moderate water stress at the early vegetative growth (V2) stage. Sunflower seedlings of C803 and R461-4 inbred lines obtained in pots filled with sand moistened to 60% field capacity were watered with (1) Hoagland's solution (control) or (2) mannitol 400 mM (moderate water stress) to field capacity on the fourth day after sowing. At V2, the seedlings were harvested and sectioned into the aerial part and roots. The parameters recorded for the analyses included the aerial part and root length, fresh and dry weight, leaf area and expansion rate, stomatal conductance, osmotic potential, phytohormones and total soluble carbohydrates. Among these parameters, the leaf area and stomatal conductance were the most affected by water stress. Abscisic acid and salicylic acid showed significant increases in the aerial part of water-stressed seedlings, while abscisic acid was the most abundant phytohormone in the roots. In addition, 28-Homocastasterone was the brassinosteroid with higher levels in both lines. This is the first report of teasterone in the sunflower. Finally, total soluble carbohydrates increased upon stressful conditions. Altogether, the water stress led to different parameter alterations dependent on the inbred line and its different sensitivity to water stress.

Abstract:The response of plants to drought stress includes reduced transpiration as stomates close in response to increased abscisic acid (ABA) concentrations. Constitutive overexpression of 9-cis-epoxycarotenoid dioxygenase (NCED), a key enzyme in ABA biosynthesis, increases drought resistance, but causes negative pleiotropic effects on plant growth and development. We overexpressed the tomato NCED (LeNCED1) in petunia plants under the control of a stress-inducible promoter, rd29A. Under water stress, the transgenic plants had increased transcripts of NCED mRNA, elevated leaf ABA concentrations, increased concentrations of proline, and a significant increase in drought resistance. The transgenic plants also displayed the expected decreases in stomatal conductance, transpiration, and photosynthesis. After 14 days without water, the control plants were dead, but the transgenic plants, though wilted, recovered fully when re-watered. Well-watered transgenic plants grew like non-transformed control plants and there was no effect of the transgene on seed dormancy.

Abstract:Yellow horn grows in northern China and has a high tolerance to drought and poor soil. Improving photosynthetic efficiency and increasing plant growth and yield under drought conditions have become important research content for researchers worldwide. Our study goal is to provide comprehensive information on photosynthesis and some candidate genes breeding of yellow horn under drought stress. In this study, seedlings' stomatal conductance, chlorophyll content, and fluorescence parameters decreased under drought stress, but non-photochemical quenching increased. The leaf microstructure showed that stomata underwent a process from opening to closing, guard cells from complete to dry, and surrounding leaf cells from smooth to severe shrinkage. The chloroplast ultrastructure showed that the changes of starch granules were different under different drought stress, while plastoglobules increased and expanded continuously. In addition, we found some differentially expressed genes related to photosystem, electron transport component, oxidative phosphate ATPase, stomatal closure, and chloroplast ultrastructure. These results laid a foundation for further genetic improvement and deficit resistance breeding of yellow horn under drought stress.

Transcriptomic Analysis of Petunia hybrida in Response to Salt Stress Using High Throughput RNA Sequencing

Abstract:Salinity and drought stress are the primary cause of crop losses worldwide. In sodic saline soils sodium chloride (NaCl) disrupts normal plant growth and development. The complex interactions of plant systems with abiotic stress have made RNA sequencing a more holistic and appealing approach to study transcriptome level responses in a single cell and/or tissue. In this work, we determined the Petunia transcriptome response to NaCl stress by sequencing leaf samples and assembling 196 million Illumina reads with Trinity software. Using our reference transcriptome we identified more than 7,000 genes that were differentially expressed within 24 h of acute NaCl stress. The proposed transcriptome can also be used as an excellent tool for biological and bioinformatics in the absence of an available Petunia genome and it is available at the SOL Genomics Network (SGN) http://solgenomics.net. Genes related to regulation of reactive oxygen species, transport, and signal transductions as well as novel and undescribed transcripts were among those differentially expressed in response to salt stress. The candidate genes identified in this study can be applied as markers for breeding or to genetically engineer plants to enhance salt tolerance. Gene Ontology analyses indicated that most of the NaCl damage happened at 24 h inducing genotoxicity, affecting transport and organelles due to the high concentration of Na+ ions. Finally, we report a modification to the library preparation protocol whereby cDNA samples were bar-coded with non-HPLC purified primers, without affecting the quality and quantity of the RNA-seq data. The methodological improvement presented here could substantially reduce the cost of sample preparation for future high-throughput RNA sequencing experiments.

Abstract:SUMMARYHeat waves occurring during droughts, can have a devastating impact on yield, especially if they happen during the flowering and seed set stages of the crop cycle. Global warming and climate change are driving an alarming increase in the frequency and intensity of combined drought and heat stress episodes, critically threatening global food security.Because high temperature is detrimental to reproductive processes, essential for plant yield, we measured the inner temperature, transpiration, sepal stomatal aperture, hormone levels, and transcriptomic response of closed soybean flowers, developing on plants subjected to a combination of drought and heat stress.Here, we report that during a combination of drought and heat stress soybean plants prioritize transpiration through flowers over transpiration through leaves by opening their flower stomata, while keeping their leaf stomata closed. This acclimation strategy, termed 'differential transpiration', lowers flower inner temperature by about 2‐3°C, protecting reproductive processes at the expense of vegetative tissues.Manipulating stomatal regulation, stomatal size and/or stomatal density of flowers could serve as a viable strategy to enhance the yield of different crops and mitigate some of the current and future impacts of global warming and climate change on agriculture.

Phytohormones and related genes function as physiological and molecular switches regulating water stress response in the sunflower

Abstract:Water deficit stress reduces crop yield in field crops, including sunflowers, at any growth stage. In response, most plants activate hormonal and gene expression patterns to mitigate damage. In this study, we evaluated changes in the physiological and gene transcription levels of two sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) inbred lines -one sensitive (B59 line) and one water stress-tolerant (B71)-in response to water stress, by using mannitol to simulate water deficit conditions, which provides moderate stress in both sunflower lines. The analyses of the accumulation of various phytohormones under this stress revealed that Jasmonic acid (JA) significantly increased in the shoots of both lines. Similarly, Salicylic acid (SA) increased in the shoots of both lines, although it also accumulated in B71 roots. In addition, Abscisic acid (ABA) and Indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) showed a considerable increase in the B59 shoots. Regarding the JA and SA pathways, the WRKY70 transcription levels were higher in the shoots of both lines and the roots of B71. The B59 line showed overtranscription of a gene related to the ABA pathway (XERICO) and genes associated with IAA (ARF9 and ARF16 genes). The B71 line, on the other hand, simultaneously triggered the JA, SA and ABA hormonal pathways in response to this stress condition. The ABA and JA hormonal pathways activated different TFs, such as RD20, RD22, RD26, ANAC19 and ANAC29, through MYC2. Both the JA and SA hormonal pathways activated the WRKY70 transcription factor. Altogether, each line triggered the hormonal and transcriptional pathways in response to water stress, although at varying intensities. The results suggest that the hormonal pathways of JA, SA, IAA and ABA, along with their primary associated genes, are activated in response to water deficit at the early growth stage in sunflower seedlings, which mitigates damage. Transcriptome, carbohydrate, and phytohormone analysis of Petunia hybrida reveals a complex disturbance of plant functional integrity under mild chilling stress

Abstract:Cultivation of chilling-tolerant ornamental crops at lower temperature could reduce the energy demands of heated greenhouses. To provide a better understanding of how sub-optimal temperatures (12°C vs. 16°C) affect growth of the sensitive Petunia hybrida cultivar 'SweetSunshine Williams', the transcriptome, carbohydrate metabolism, and phytohormone homeostasis were monitored in aerial plant parts over 4 weeks by use of a microarray, enzymatic assays and GC-MS/MS. The data revealed three consecutive phases of chilling response. The first days were marked by a strong accumulation of sugars, particularly in source leaves, preferential up-regulation of genes in the same tissue and down-regulation of several genes in the shoot apex, especially those involved in the abiotic stress response. The midterm phase featured a partial normalization of carbohydrate levels and gene expression. After 3 weeks of chilling exposure, a new stabilized balance was established. Reduced hexose levels in the shoot apex, reduced ratios of sugar levels between the apex and source leaves and a higher apical sucrose/hexose ratio, associated with decreased activity and expression of cell wall invertase, indicate that prolonged chilling induced sugar accumulation in source leaves at the expense of reduced sugar transport to and reduced sucrose utilization in the shoot. This was associated with reduced levels of indole-3-acetic acid and abscisic acid in the apex and high numbers of differentially, particularly up-regulated genes, especially in the source leaves, including those regulating histones, ethylene action, transcription factors, and a jasmonate-ZIM-domain protein. Transcripts of one Jumonji C domain containing protein and one expansin accumulated in source leaves throughout the chilling period. The results reveal a dynamic and complex disturbance of plant function in response to mild chilling, opening new perspectives for the comparative analysis of differently tolerant cultivars.

Abstract:Drought is the most critical climatic factor instigating severe threats to crop production worldwide. As stress ameliorants, exogenous sodium nitroprusside (SNP) or spermidine (Spd) supply has positive responses in alleviating the drought adversities in crops, however, reports regarding their combined effects is still elusive. Here, the protective role of SNP and Spd to confer drought resistance in sunflower ( Helianthus annuus L.) through up-regulation of physiological and metabolic processes was investigated. Plants were foliar sprayed with individual or combined SNP (100 μM) or Spd (100 μM). Drought was induced by keeping the soil at 100% (normal) and 60% (drought stress) field capacity levels. Drought exposure caused a marked decline in relative water content (RWC), excised leaf water retention (ELWR), net photosynthesis ( P N ), transpiration rate ( E ), stomatal conductance ( gs ), and sub-stomatal conductance ( Ci ) with substantial increase in catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and peroxidase (POX). SNP plus Spd exhibited a considerable increase in CAT, SOD, and POX activities under drought, and helped the plants to retain optimum water status and gas exchange attributes. Similarly, hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) and malondialdehyde (MDA) contents were increased significantly to drought; however, a notable decline was recorded in drought prone plants treated with exogenous SNP plus Spd. Moreover, addition of SNP plus Spd under drought caused a remarkable increase in chlorophyll a (Chl a ), chlorophyll b (Chl b ), chlorophyll total (Chl t ), carotenoids (Car), and growth traits like shoot length (SL), root length (RL), shoot fresh weight (SFW), shoot dry weight (SDW), root dry weight (RDW). Combined SNP and Spd application could potentially alleviate the drought-induced damages in sunflower through increased water status (8–10%), antioxidant enzymes (17–28%), chlorophyll pigments (14–21%), and growth performance (12–22%) under drought stress.

Abstract:Our study addresses the effects of reduced water availability on the vegetative and reproductive traits of a buzz‐pollinated plant species belonging to the family Solanaceae. The overall attractiveness of the flowers was reduced in plant individuals exposed to drought treatments, which could directly affect plant–pollinator interactions. While drought is known to affect crop yields negatively, there is limited knowledge of the strategies used by animal‐pollinated plants to cope with such conditions. In this study, we simulated low and moderate drought conditions in a greenhouse experiment and examined the vegetative and reproductive traits of a buzz‐pollinated species (Solanum lycopersicum). Our findings indicate that individuals exposed to both drought conditions decreased in height and bore fewer leaves but increased in the ratio of root length to dry mass. The number of flowers produced per day and the overall flower production were higher in plants under control conditions. We found no differences in the onset of flowering between the treatments, but the plants exposed to low drought showed peak flowering earlier. Among the morphometric traits, flower height, floral diameter, petal length, and petal width were significantly lower in both drought conditions. Individuals in the moderate‐drought treatment displayed greater variation in reproductive traits than those in the low‐drought treatment. Overall, drought stress negatively impacted the aboveground vegetative growth and the reproductive efforts of plants.
