Abstract:KEYWORDS: With great interest we read the paper by De Vries et al. ( Citation 2024 ) on personality assessment in nursing home residents with Korsakoff's syndrome. We applaud the attention for maladaptive personality characteristics in this patient population. However, assessing these in individuals with severe mental illness, cognitive disorders and somatic co-morbidity is extremely challenging. De Vries et al. ( Citation 2024 ) administered a short and long version of the self-report Dutch Personality Inventory (Barelds et al., Citation 2014 ) in a sample of 30 alcoholic Korsakoff patients. Moreover, informants (e.g., child, partner) of a subsample of 22 patients completed an informant-based personality questionnaire (the Hetero-Anamnestic Personality inventory; HAP, Barendse et al., Citation 2013 ) aimed to measure premorbid personality traits. Professional caregivers completed an observation-based variant (the HAP-t) to assess current personality characteristics in this subsample. A comparison of pre-morbid and current personality traits would then provide insight into changes in personality over time.
