Abstract:This paper investigates the synchronization problem over heterogeneous dynamical networks, in which nonidentical dynamical systems coexist. By introducing a virtual target, synchronization with an error level, called quasi-synchronization, is analyzed in asymmetric and symmetric networks, respectively. Some sufficient quasi-synchronization conditions are presented and explicit expressions of error levels are derived to estimate the synchronization error. Finally, two networks with six different Chua's circuits are provided to verify the theoretical results.

Abstract:This paper discusses quasi-synchronization problem in an array of heterogeneous partially coupled dynamical networks. At first, based on the Lyapunov stability theorem and the comparison principle, sufficient quasi-synchronization criteria are presented such that the proposed heterogeneous partially coupled dynamical networks with heterogeneous impulses can be synchronized within a nonzero error bound. Then, by taking a specific matrix function, we obtain some lower-dimensional inequalities, which are easy to be verified. Moreover, we propose the design method of controllers under a given error bound and study the optimization problem for the error bound. Finally, a numerical example is provided to illustrate the efficiency of the obtained results.

Abstract:This article focuses on quasi-synchronization of fuzzy heterogeneous complex networks. An aperiodically intermittent control strategy based on discrete-time state observations (aperiodically intermittent discrete-time state observations control for short) is designed. Different from intermittent control strategies referred in existing literatures, the control duration of the control strategy used in this article is based on discrete-time state observations, which makes the control used in this article somewhat less demanding and more effective. Under the aperiodically intermittent discrete-time state observations control strategy, a valid approach combining Lyapunov method with graph theory is proposed in this article. Throughout this article, a theorem and a corollary to the quasi-synchronization criterion of fuzzy heterogeneous complex networks are established. The results show that when the control gain is larger, the convergence domain is smaller. Finally, an illustrative example is presented and the simulation of this example shows the feasibility and validness of the obtained results.

Abstract:The paper studies synchronization via pinning control on heterogeneous dynamical networks. A sufficient criterion for ensuring synchronization of the heterogeneous complex network is given. By introducing a virtual synchronization target and designing a pinning controller, the paper proves that the heterogeneous dynamical networks can reach quasi-synchronization, which contains the case of synchronization with the virtual synchronization target. Some simulations are given to illustrate the theoretical result.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the synchronization problem for a class of Markovian jump complex heterogeneous networks with partly unknown transition rates and time-varying delay. Based on the concept of quasi-synchronization, a novel stochastic Lyapunov functional is constructed to solve the problem. Then sufficient quasi-synchronization conditions are presented, and explicit expressions of error levels are proposed to estimate the synchronization error. Finally, numerical examples are provided to demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed theoretic result.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with carrying out synchronization between two completely different complex dynamical networks, which is called generalized outer synchronization. Our objective is to develop a control scheme so as to achieve this generalized outer synchronization. The derived result is built upon Barbalat's Lemma. It is shown that when two complex dynamical networks to be synchronized have different topologies and diverse node dynamics, the designed controller is a nonlinear one. In particular, when two complex dynamical networks have the same topological structures or identical dynamics, the designed controller can be simplified, sometimes to a linear controller. Computer simulations are presented to show that generalized outer synchronization can be quickly realized under the designed controller.

Abstract:In this paper, the synchronization problem of complex networks with linearly diffusively coupled nonidentical nodes is investigated. Starting with the boundedness condition of network trajectories, we introduce an invariant set such that it contains all limit points of ultimately synchronous trajectories. Then, we develop a decomposition technique for the heterogeneous network. With this decomposition, the synchronization of the network can be investigated by the convergence of one decomposed network and the synchronization of the other decomposed homogeneous-like network. Moreover, for a particular case that the invariant set is a linear subspace, conditional synchronization analysis is provided to reduce the coupling complexity between the two decomposed networks. It is noted that our decomposition technique is quite simple yet general: by this technique, the synchronization of various heterogeneous complex networks can be transformed into the stability of nonlinear systems and synchronization of homogeneous-like complex networks. Finally, we present several numerical examples to demonstrate the effectiveness of the theoretical results. In particular, we use an example to show that our theoretical procedure is also feasible for some heterogeneous networks with a general invariant submanifold instead of linear subspace.

Abstract:This article addresses the bounded synchronization of heterogeneous complex dynamical networks. Different from most existing criteria which deal with only global bounded synchronization, a general theorem is established for analyzing both the local and global bounded synchronization of a class of heterogeneous networks in a unified approach. By developing a joint-diagonalization-like technique, several easy-to-use bounded synchronization criteria with low-dimensional linear matrix inequalities are derived based on the general theorem. Particularly, an estimate of the synchronization error and the admissible initial values are given. Examples are provided to verify the theoretical results.

Abstract:This article proposes a distributed error estimation approach to investigate the quasi-synchronization problem of heterogeneous dynamical networks with static and adaptive coupling laws under a directed communication topology. By introducing a pining control strategy, a novel class of distributed error estimation algorithms is proposed for solving the quasi-synchronization problem of heterogeneous dynamical networks with a static coupling law by exploring the local information among the neighboring nodes. By removing the assumption that the smallest real part of the nonzero eigenvalues of the Laplacian matrix associated with the communication graph must be known, we also address the case of the quasi-synchronization of heterogeneous dynamical networks with nonidentical nonlinear dynamics and an adaptive coupling law. It is proved, in the sense of Lyapunov function, that the distributed error estimation for the quasi-synchronization problem of heterogeneous dynamical networks with static and adaptive coupling laws will be achieved with a bounded synchronization error level. Finally, two examples are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approaches.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the synchronization of heterogeneous agents interacting over a dynamical network, where the edge dynamics are heterogeneous, modeling the nonuniform communication environment between the agents. Novel synchronization conditions are obtained from a phasic perspective by utilizing a newly formulated small phase theorem. These conditions have lower conservatism compared to gain-based conditions and generalize positive real and negative imaginary type conditions. They scale well with the size of the network and reveal the trade-off between the phases of node dynamics and edge dynamics.

Abstract:In this paper, a class of multi-cluster complex networks is discussed. Complete synchronization of such networks is analysed in detail. It is explored how the synchronization depends on the intra coupling matrices, the inter coupling matrices and the corresponding coupling strengths. The approach proposed also applies to more general networks composed of multi-cluster networks, too.

Abstract:In this paper, the quasi-synchronization of stochastic heterogeneous complex networks are investigated. By combining periodic sampling and event-triggered control (E-TC), static and dynamic periodic E-TC are designed, respectively. Different from continuous E-TC used in existing literatures, Zeno behavior can be naturally eliminated. By applying the Lyapunov method and graph theory, the sufficient conditions are established to guarantee the quasi-synchronization of heterogeneous complex networks. An example of single-link robot arm system is presented to show the effectiveness of proposed PE-TC strategy.

Abstract:Abstract Synchronization is a ubiquitous phenomenon in nature. Over the last two decades, the synchronization of complex networks receives an increasing attention. This paper aims at developing a new pinning synchronization approach for complex networks by using the heterogeneous information of different nodes cooperatively. Heterogeneous information means the different observation of the reference signal. In detail, different from the traditional pinning control idea, this paper utilizes different feedback gains to cope with the corresponding personalized observations of a specific static reference signal for each node to realize network synchronization. Based on our proposed method, this paper obtains three fundamental pinning synchronization theorems with necessary and sufficient conditions for undirected connected networks, strongly connected networks, and networks with a spanning tree, respectively. Following the above theorems, this paper also designs the feedback gains and coupling strength for networks to achieve synchronization. Finally, the numerical simulations are given to validate the proposed approach.

Abstract:Abstract Synchronization in classes of continuous-time dynamical networks with different topologies is investigated. A synchronization-optimal algorithm based on the synchronization criterion is proposed so as to get the appropriate topology such that complex network has the optimal synchronizability. It has been argued that heterogeneity suppresses synchronization in unweighted networks. However, it is shown in this work that synchronizability of Type I networks is independent of heterogeneity in the degree distribution, while synchronizability of Type II networks is dependent of both heterogeneity and scale of networks. It is presented the more heterogeneous and larger scale, the poorer synchronizability of Type II networks.

Abstract:The model of complex dynamical networks with partial information transmission is introduced. Unlike existing complex network models, the information transmission between the nodes is assumed to have an imperfect physical condition — only partial information can be transmitted. Furthermore, for varying connections, the partly transmitted information can be completely distinct. This communication constraint makes the network harder to achieve synchronization. To reflect a more practical situation, we consider the complex networks with two typical kinds of inner coupling matrix: diagonal matrix and lower triangle matrix. By using an efficient decomposition method, some synchronization criteria are then derived for the complex networks with partial information transmission. Finally, a complex network with chaotic dynamics is constructed as an example to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed results.

Abstract:This paper investigates generalized synchronization of three typical classes of complex dynamical networks: scale-free networks, small-world networks, and interpolating networks. The proposed synchronization strategy is to adjust adaptively a node’s coupling strength based on the node’s local generalized synchronization information. By taking the auxiliary-system approach and using the Lyapunov function method, we prove that for any given initial coupling strengths, the generalized synchronization can take place in complex networks consisting of nonidentical dynamical systems. It is demonstrated that the coupling strengths are affected by topologies of the networks. Furthermore, it is found that there are hierarchical features in the processes of generalized synchronization in scale-free networks because of their highly heterogeneous distributions of connection degree. Finally, we discuss in detail how a network’s degree of heterogeneity affects its generalization synchronization behavior.

Abstract:Synchronization in complex networks with time dependent coupling and stochastically switching coupling structure is discussed. A novel approach investigating synchronization based on the scramblingness property of the coupling matrix is proposed. Some sufficient condition for a network with general time-varying coupling structure to reach complete synchronization is provided. Based on the general theorem, networks with stochastically switching coupling structures is investigated. In particular, two kinds of stochastic switching coupling networks are addressed: (a) independent and identically distributed switching processes and (b) Markov jump processes. In both cases, some sufficient condition for almost sure synchronization of the networks is given. Also, numerical simulations are provided to illustrate the theoretical results.
